For those who have read Harry Potter, what did you think of it? Did you like it?

Loved it! I've finished The Sorcerer's Stone and I just started The Chamber of Secrets. Like I mentioned in a previous post, Harry Potter's world is magical and the books chronicle it in a very witty and imaginative manner. It was fascinating to be introduced to this new world of wizards and witches and unicorns and ghosts. The sharp humor and spirited adventures make for an entertaining and engrossing read. Little Harry's bravery is inspiring---so much heart in a scrawny little child. His relationship with his muggle family is a caricature of sorts but then again, this is also children's literature, where no stepmother is kind.

I've read the first Harry Potter book and it's quite good. The humor is quite witty. It reminds me of that Roald Dahl book, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (which I highly recommend =Þ).

I liked The Sorcerer's Stone as well!! Although sometimes I couldn't help but wonder how 11-year olds could have so much wit and courage as Harry, Ron and Hermione... pero towards the end, natakot talaga ako, ha! For about ten minutes I had to keep the lights on before sleeping.

I've just finished reading Harry Potter. I loved being in Hogwarts...I was actually dreaming of going there myself (if there was such a place) that was how great the author did in carrying me away in her fantasy land. Harry Potter is a nice book not just for kids but those who'd want to be a kid once in a while. :)

I asked around in Powerbooks Alabang and the girl there told me that the paperback copies of the 2nd and 3rd of the series were due during the 1st week of April--and I went there on the 3rd week of April.

She probably meant the first week of May but it's not yet there :( I enjoyed the book but not so much that I'm willing to shell out P600+ for a hardback :)

i really enjoyed the harry potter series (all 3 books)! there's a 4th one that will be released this summer yata in the U.S. and you can pre-order your copies from the 'net (like amazon.com)

when i was a kid i also enjoyed books such as these: i remember reading "the lion the witch and the wardrobe", and also the enid blyton books (anyone remember those)? i particularly liked the fact that these books didn't treat the reader like a "kid" and instead trusted the reader to comprehend the story despite the vocabulary, plot twists, and issues involved. :)

well, i've read the 1st and 3rd book. the fourth book was just released yesterday and the orders were overwhelming. Harry Potter might be classified under children's literature but there's just something in it (probably the magic :) ) that makes me want to read on. Rowling's imagination is impressive. my favorite is the game called quidiche (spell check please). so does anybody here share this interest?

I've only read the first book but I'm hooked! I heard on FOX na 3.8 mil copies ang first printing nitong no.4:The Goblet of Fire, but they've already sold 3.5 mil+ already! There was also a review recently in the Inquirer. is it available locally already?

weye, the game is Quidditch, and that was brilliant of J.K. Rowling! It's like a hyper-combo version of football/basketball/et.al.

Rowling's style is similar to Roald Dahl, pero sa palagay ko mas magaling pa rin yung style ni Dahl.

The Goblet of Fire

This installment was probably the most intense of all four books perhaps because there was just so much conflict. The suspense was heart-stopping and came not only from the dark Lord's pursuit of Harry but also from the peculiar international competition. It was quite emotional when a rift developed between two main characters. But,despite all the drama, humorous lines were definitely not neglected; it'll still be able to draw a laugh or two out of you.

KamiyaKaoru
Jul 14, 2000, 02:30 PM
Also, Book 4 focuses on the 3 main characters growing up, experiencing typical adolescent problems added with a twist of magic....

The Harry Potter phenomena was also featured in the latest issues of TIME and Newsweek. There was an interview of JK Rowling there...

Gotta love Harry Potter. It's not your conventional fairy tale. I saw the (seemingly bottled blonde) J.K. Rowling on TV just this afternoon. As a promotional gimmick, she arrived at her book signing session in a marvelous old-fashioned train (like the one Harry Potter has to ride to go to the other realm).

hi :) sorry for the nick, i'm just really a HP fanatic. just wanted to share good (or maybe bad) news to all you guys... there's gonna be a Harry Potter movie and it's gonna come out November 2001. the casting isn't done yet, i think the auditions are still going on... and they prefer to have actors/actresses who aren't really known, or not known at all!

moreover, that kid from 6TH SENSE auditioned for the role of Harry and he was so good, so
they might make an exception :)

hope you guys like my news! http://www.pinoyexchange.com/girl.gif

I just picked up "Harry Potter and the Sorcerre's Stone" because I wanted to see what all the hype was about. I think I'm hooked already and I'm just barely on the sixth chapter! I had it in my hands as I walking up to campus today. Good thing the cars didn't crash into me as I was crossing the street. :D

Folks, isn't it interesting to note that Rowling was a struggling mother when she first started writing Harry Potter? (And on a napkin at some fast food joint, mind you!) Now her HP books are everywhere!

For those who don't want, or can't afford to, purchase the Potter series, why not borrow from the library? It's free! :D

leelayce: Harry Potter is categorized under children's books, yes. I think most adults find it as a good escape to some magical reverie. (I just found out that my new boss in on the second novel! http://www.pinoyexchange.com/lol.gif )It's a book that can help you unwind from the toil and troubles of the day and become Harry Potter himself, meeting wonderful people, going to magical places, and being special. I think we could all relate to the hero one way or another. He was a simple boy who lived with an aunt and uncle who didn't appreciate, and cousin who beat him up every chance he got. Then one magical day, on his birthday actually, he realizes that he's more special than anyone, including him, ever gave him credit for. The novels, I believe, are about his magical adventures. Pick it up some day when you get the chance. :)

Wow sikat na pala sa Pilipinas si Harry Potter! It's a good thing that it's picking up now here. I'm a real bookworm and I ordered the first 3 Harry Potter books at Barnes and Noble early this year out of curiosity cuz I kept reading about it online, and was hooked! Never thought a children's book could be this interesting. I still have to get the 4th one, but my favorite is the 3rd - The Prisoner of Azkaban. Yun 2nd - Chamber of Secrets - is kinda slow paced for me compared to the 1st and 3rd. JK Rowling indeed has a wonderful imagination and a good writer, for a plain housewife. The Harry Potter series will definitely be a classic, like those Dr. Seuss books!

I suggest you get the hardbound copy - the paper's nice and all, lalo na yun cover. It'll last you longer. And you can let your kid read it in the future, hehehe. Medyo mahal nga, pero it's definitely worth it. Pareho lang naman ang price nya sa US eh.

And for those who havent read it, do it chronologically para hindi nakakalito magbasa.

For those who read up to the 4th book, are you seeing a potential love triangle emerging? Harry-hermione-Ron.

fanfiction.net has quite a lot of HP fanfiction. There are H & H fans and there are H&R fans, oh boy.

Personally, I think Hermione just adores Harry and has a lot of respect for him. I think she's too unconventional a girl, to be just hoodwinked in a typical girl-boy relationship.

i just read the 4th book, but i still love the 3rd one! rowling just made a few subplots in the 4th. anyway, here's some news on the upcoming harry potter movie:

Daniel Radcliffe has been selected to play the title role in Warner Bros. Pictures' upcoming movie adaptation of ``Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone,'' the studio said on Monday. In addition, newcomers Emma Watson, 10, and Rupert Grint, 11, whose acting experience to date consists only of parts in school plays, will join the cast as Harry's two best friends at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry -- Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. Britain's Alan Rickman and Irish actor Richard Harris reportedly have been in talks to play the roles of Professor Snape and headmaster Dumbledore, respectively. Dame Maggie Smith has emerged in media reports in connection with Harry's art teacher, Professor McGonagall, and Scottish actor Robbie Coltrane as been linked to the role of Hagrid, the school's groundsman who befriends the young wizard.

Well, I've gone to amazon.com and I found out that on the british site amazon.co.uk, they've already got a paperback copy of the 3rd book. In the british site the paperback copy of teh 4th book is due on july 2001. The local bookstore should just get copies from UK then... for sake of some of the readers, eh?

I started reading the Harry Potter books almost 2 weeks ago, and I finished all 4 of them in less than a week! They were so good I couldn't put them down! :D Siempre bitin ako coz next year pa lalabas Book 5! http://www.pinoyexchange.com/crying.gif

More on the movie:

Here's a pic of Harry (Dan Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson)...

http://www.harrypotter.ws/movie/mdf102492.jpg

Hogwarts will probobly be shot at Gloucester Cathedral, and studio shoots will be in Leaversdon Studio in England (the same place where Star Wars: Episode One was filmed).

A pic of Gloucester Cathedral:

The rights to make Harry Potter into a movie were purchased by Warner Brothers for English producer David Heyman and Heyday Films. The movie will be directed by Chris Colombus and John Williams will be writing the score. Not bad... http://smilecwm.tripod.com/net5/wacky.gif

The movie (based on Book 1) is expected November 2001. Hope we won't be disappointed! http://smilecwm.tripod.com/net3/pinkie.gif

novalee, I think its cheaper here, compared to prices from Amazon.com,... lalo na may sale (20% off 'ata)ang Powerbooks and Goodwill Bookstore ngayon. Paperbacks for books 1 & 2 are already available.

I bought all 4 of the hardcover books right away coz I thought it would be worth it in the end. I was right! :D They're really nice books to keep so you won't be wasting your money. Plus Books 1 and 2 palang ang available here in paperback... :(

Books 1, 2 and 3 are PhP 659 (regular price) and Book 4 is PhP 859 (regular price). Powerbooks has an ongoing sale though, and you can get them at 20% off. :D

If you check out Amazon's website the books are around $12 (Books 1, 2 and 3) and around $15 (Book 4), but you'd have to add shipping charges pa. Plus they're here na so it's convenient to just get them here. :D No need to wait! :p

Yun nga lang Miracle, may kamahalan yung audio tapes... http://smilecwm.tripod.com/net5/IIworry.gif They're about PhP 1,300 on the average...at hindi available Book 4. (Actually I'm not even sure if they still have copies of the other books or last na ba yung nabili ko...) Pero I started Book 1 last night, and the guy is quite good! :D Hindi siya boring magbasa. May voices pa siya, and he really tries to say everything with feeling. I felt like a child being read to sleep! :p

I would prefer the audio CDs so I can listen to them not only in the car but even when I'm on the computer (and I'm sure they'll last longer) but they're more expensive than the tapes and they're not available here. http://www.pinoyexchange.com/crying.gif If you check Amazon, the tapes cost around $30-$35 while the CDs cost around $45-$55! Oh well... siguro pag-iisipan ko muna if I should order them in the future. Y'know...to keep as a collection... Heehee... HP addict ba? http://smilecwm.tripod.com/net5/wacky.gif

By the way, no wonder ang tagal i-download ng MP3... There are 6 tapes to a book! They're about 8-9 hours long! Book 3 has 7 tapes and is 12 hours long! Good luck sa sister mo... http://www.pinoyexchange.com/lol.gif

there's a very cool harry potter screen saver at the scholastic website www.scholastic.com (http://www.scholastic.com)

atsaka a friend sent me this sorting hat program...input some details about yourself to find out whether you're a pure blooded muggle / wizard or mixed and which house u belong (griffyndor, ravenclaw, hufflepuff, slytherin). pwede bang mag-attach ng file dito? pano?

ako, half-muggle half wizard pero taga griffyndor!

tsadi: correction! it's now the nimbus two thousand & one! :D

when i first heard about the harry potter craze, i didn't pay too much attention, passing it off as something akin to pokemon. but curiousity got the better of me, though sorcerer's stone didn't particularly impress me that much. then i read chamber of secrets. now, i'm a big fan. :)

I've just finished reading Harry Potter Book 3 - Prisoner of Azkaban. I can't wait to get my hands on Book 4 - Goblet of Fire.
Well, my sudden curiosity on why Harry Potter is so popular made me read the book. I admire J.K. Rowling on her choice of words and on how she graphically described the events that you already feel its intensity. Harry Potter is indeed a must read!

Kurama: i must agree, read Dragonlance while you're waiting for the next Harry Potter installment, or maybe some Madeleine L'Engle... J.K. Rowling's writing is much more tongue-in-cheek though, adding to the enjoyment...

well, the four Harry Potter books were all great reads, my favorite was the prisoner of azkaban. i admit i must have a girly crush on Sirius Black!

I once watched a Hollywood movie before that's a bit similar to Harry Potter. It's a school for young witches where they also learn spells and potions, how to fly, and they were each given cats to assist them in their flying.

The main character is a struggling student who cannot seem to cut it as a witch. She has friends and enemies also, like Harry Potter, and she has to test her ability by fighting off bad witches. I just can't remember the name of the movie, but I swear, it's almost the same as Harry Potter.

Holier than thou
Oct 5, 2000, 04:12 PM
I have read the first two books of Harry Potter: The sorcerer's stone and the chamber of secrets. The book 2 is scarier than the book 1 because the situation was so scary: There was this creature that killed one muggle-born student when she was in a bathroom. Hagrid was put to Azkhaban, Dumbledore was suspended by authorities, and the person responsible for the deaths of the students remains a mystery.

What really fascinates me about J.K. Rowling's style is her choice of words. Her writing style also makes the book suitable not only for children but also for adults!!!

I'm sure that everybody says that Harry Potter is only for kids. It is also for teenagers, adults, and even senior citizens!!!

That's J.K. Rowling's style.

for me, it's very unsatanic. maybe those saying things like that is really just jealous of the fame harry potter achieved, within & without the book. ;)

it doesn't teach anything remotely satanic anyway, and actually provides good lessons about life, consequences of your actions, true courage, priorities, real friendship, etc.. i esp. liked that part in chamber of secrets when dumbledore was making harry see that his fears about slytherin & riddle are unfounded & said, "it is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities." i tell you, it gave me a wonderful, warm feeling. :)

I've read books 1-4 and it's great!! Book 4 is very exciting because things start to really pick up(too bad harry and ron didnt ask hermoine out for the ball...uh oops spoiler ehehe). Books 3 is also nice. Book 2 is really funny and 1 is just as amazing.

The way the story twists and turns in all 4 books makes it really exciting and makes you want to read some more. Im looking forward to book 5. You might want to check out some harry potter sites on the net. They have a lot of rumors/stuff about the series and the remaing books. Snape to fall inlove? heh =)

Grabeh, I can't wait for the next Harry Potter pero it's going to be released pa on July 2001. Hay, pero you know what some parts of the books get kinda repetitive especially yung part na tuwing harry will have a duel with Voldemort Dumbledore will go and comfort and answer Harry's questions. Pero I guess kailangan din yun para may common thing among the books (after all they are sequels) ....I don't know if you guys are interested pero I have some rumors here about the things that will happen sa mga susunod na books.....

Rumors & Predictions
Remember, these are just rumors and predictions, not facts!

From Lauren

Hermione made Prefect, and then head girl, possibly?

Neville becomes a teacher at Hogwarts after graduation

Lupin is said to return in future books

We wont be seeing Harry's parents coming back to life

We will find more about Lily Potters background
A few predictions for Books Five, Six, and Seven:
1. Lord Voldemort will find a way to get to Harry at the Dursleys; this will happen before Harry is of age to use magic outside Hogwarts.
2. Fred and George will open their joke shop, conveniently located next door to the Leaky Cauldron.
3. Theyll make lots of money, but will be willing to share the wealth.
4. Ron and Hermione will become romantically involved.
5. Hagrid will serve as interim Headmaster to Hogwarts until Sirius Black can assume the post. This will infuriate Snape, who will leave to serve as Headmaster at Durmstrang.
6. Hagrid, broken-hearted to discover Maxime is an evil giantess, will ultimately fall in love with Winky the house elf.
7. Bill Weasley will take over Snapes post at Hogwarts.
8. Hermione will ultimately die at the hands of the Dark Lord.
9. Viktor Krum will be hired as the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, and will remain there until he is killed by Lord Voldemort. Which will leave the post open to Ron Weasley.
10. Cho and Harry will have a serious relationship, but she will become an Auror and leave him.

13. Ron will assume the post as the permanent Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, and faculty advisor to the Gryffindor House. It takes him awhile to accept that he will not be an Auror, but he was only accepted into the Auror program on probation and suffered a bad injury during training, after all.
14. McGonagall and Dumbledore will retire from Hogwarts and travel together.
15. Ron will end up marrying Fleur, who will replace Trelawney, once Trelawney is unmasked as a Dark Lord sympathizer.
16. Neville Longbottom will be hired to teach Herbology. Together with Bill Weasley, they will concoct a potion that releases Nevilles parents from their internal prisons.
17. Arthur Weasley will be rewarded for capturing the remaining Death Eaters by becoming head of the Ministry. This appointment will lead to his reorganizing the Ministry and opening a Muggle Artifacts Museum.
18. Young Crabbe and Goyle will have their souls sucked by dementors.
19. Draco Malfoy, having escaped from Azkaban, will ultimately replace Snape as Headmaster at Durmstrang under an assumed identity, thus providing a plot for an anniversary edition many years from now.
20. Harry will marry the long-suffering Ginny Weasley, and finally he will be an official member of his favorite family.
21. Ultimately, Harry will shun a career as an Auror and replace Sirius as Hogwarts Headmaster; he will fulfill Dumbledores dream of an open-door policy to exceptional Muggles, in the form of the Hermione Granger Memorial Scholarship. Sirius will remain in an ex-officio, advisory capacity

what's so great about harry potter books is that it just keeps getting better! grabe, sometimes, i can just say that i would love to study at hogwarts instead .. and i want to be a witch! hehe (kahit muggleborn lang). anyway, i'm still on book 4... rowling is good at picking the details from the previous books and giving more meaning to them. She's so good at creating a new world... i love the little things from the floo powder to the images moving in pictures to the spells to Quidditch!! gusto kong maglaro!!! i want a firebolt! hehehe! but the best part for me is when albus dumbledore talks to harry potter in the end.. tapos he explains to harry potter why things happened, etc. etc.
naalala ko ngayon.. what he said to harry.. in book 2, that "it's the choices we made that makes us who we are.." something like that.. tapos sa book 3 i really like what dumbledore said na since our actions are very complicated we odn't know the consequences until long after.. (it's like the moral of the story.. ) galing..! i luvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv harry potter!!!!!!

loyal pa rin ako kay ROALD DAHL. but this doesn't mean i don't enjoy harry potter. i actually love it.

medyo mabagal ako, finished book 1 in 2 days kasi i waited for the paperback. got the paperback eds of books 2 & 3, the UK versions that don't have the american ed's cute illustrations. got those from singapore kasi i was afraid matatagalang makarating ang paperback dito. i'm still reading book 2. honestly, i'm a little distracted by the not-so-cute cover of my copy. inggit ako dun sa US ed. but a friend visited me this morning and suggested that i sell my copies via e-bay kasi the UK editions daw are being auctioned at steep prices! hmmm. nice idea yata yon.

Some news updates...

BOOK 5 TITLE: During her appearance on the Today Show (10/20/00) JKR announced a possible title for Book 5 might be "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix". She says this is one of at least two (and possibly more) titles she is considering!

MORE JK ROWLING BOOKS! Reuters reports that J.K. Rowling agreed Monday to write two short books to raise money for Comic Relief, a charity for Third World causes. "Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them'' and "Quidditch Through The Ages'' are scheduled to be published in March 2001.

PLAYSTATION NEWS! Dakota tells us: "There will be a Harry Potter video game on the Playstation 2 system. It is going to come out in Spring 2001, and developers are considering making it so that you don't play Harry, but create a character (could be yourself), and put him through Hogwarts, facing some of the same kind of challenges Harry does, but not exactly the same. There are also talks of an interactive Quidditch game in the game, but it wouldn't be the central part of it. This is all in The Official U.S. Playstation Magazine."

Can I just say something? Warning... Sorry kung spoiler sa mga hindi pa nakakatapos ng Book 4. http://smilecwm.tripod.com/net5/iiworry.gif

I have a feeling Mrs. Figg (the lady who watches Harry when the Dursleys go off somewhere and leaves Harry behind) is a witch!

Kasi sa may ending ng Book 4, Professor Dumbledore asked Sirius Black to "alert Remus Lupin, Arabella Figg, Mundungus Fletcher -- the old crowd." I have a feeling that's the same person! Siguro she was supposed to help look out for Harry while he was growing up at the Dursleys. Remember her? The lady who loves cats? Actually, di kaya siya si Crookshanks?

Guess ko lang... :D

Wow I just saw the Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone - COLLECTOR'S EDITION at Amazon (it came out November 1, 2000)! A leather bound edition of the first book in the best-selling Harry Potter series with original art work from J.K. Rowling (includes a previously unpublished sketch of Harry by Rowling herself) and gold foil stamping. An opportunity to collect a beautiful version of a modern classic indeed! http://smilecwm.tripod.com/net7/biggthumpup.gif

Meron din Harry Potter Special! Collector's editions of the first three books - all 1st edition early printings! I think these are the British versions.

Sobra akong HP collector! I wanna buy!!! Kainis ang taas taas pa naman ng dollar ngayon! http://smilecwm.tripod.com/net7/bawling.gif

From the Harry Potter Network. For anyone who's interested... :D

[QUOTE]The Fifth Book

The title might be "Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix"!
It is supposed to be due November 2001 along with the movie.
Professor Lupin makes a return!
We will learn more about the background of Lily Potter!
Hermione will be made a Prefect. So what else is new?
Mrs. Figg may be a witch!

Joe, at the Literature board, said:

I have added my twenty cents on the Mrs. Figg theory. Yes, I am almost 100% sure Mrs. Figg is THE Arabella Figg Dumbledore mentions. Since Jo loves Latin, I decided to drag out my handy-dandy Latin book and look up "Arabella Figg". Then I came to these conclusions (and these definitions):

Arabella Figg means...
ara : refuge, protection.
bellator : [adj] courageous, brave, warlike.
bellator : fighting man, warrior.
bellatorius : warlike, martial, pugnacious.
infigo : to fix, fasten /to imprint, impress.

So ara(refuge)+bella(war)+infigo[fig](fix)=
...Fixed War Refuge?

...Maybe she fixes and runs a refuge for war victims, or a portable home for wizards up against Voldemort.

...Or...she repairs tents for the fighters! THAT'S why Mr. Weasley's tent smelled like cats! Because the person he borrowed it from still had his tent from when he fought Voldemort!

Sara also writes in to say:

In book one, Figg constantly showed Harry pictures of cats at her house. That was my first clue, but in the fourth book, it seems as if it has to be her. Voldemort, when speaking to the Death Eaters (P.657, American) he states, "Dumbledore invoked an ancient magic, to ensure the boy's protection as long as he is in his relations' care." Who was that acient magic, that witch he was talking about? Figg!!

There has been spectulation for awhile that Crookshanks is in fact an Animagus, and because Mrs. Figg likes cats so much, she might be Crookshanks!

Hindi pala ako nag-iisa sa guess ko about Mrs. Figg... http://smilecwm.tripod.com/net5/wacky.gif

The Rock
Nov 20, 2000, 09:28 AM
nikolai, you are one obsessed equestrienne.:D Well, can't say The Rock blames you. It took him a little over a week to finish all four Harry Potter books (book three and four borrowed from nang or Ines as you know her.;) )and they are indeed amazing. Although the first three are pretty light and almost superficial, SPOILER ALERT, the fourth ends quite dark. The way The Rock sees it, if we view all 7 Harry Potter books like a movie trilogy, "Goblet of Fire" is its "Empire Strikes Back". A bit darker, more evil, someone actually dying, etc. Maybe that's why The Rock likes the 4th book the best so far.

As for all of those rumors and theories regarding future editions, they're quite interesting and intriguing. It goes to show how completely devoted some Potter fans really are. Oh, and someone mentioned that screensaver from the scholastic website, right? Well The Rock got it and it's pretty cool. Too bad it only covered the first three books though.

And The Rock wants to make a demand on merchandisers involved with the Potter movies, make lost of Firebolts! The Rock doesn't know how they'll be operational, but just having a powerhouse broomstick would be cool.

If you smell what The Rock is cookin!

ADDITIONAL HARRY POTTER INFO
Here's a really cool site with a list of spells, charms,Hogwarts words and even the origin of the names of the characters, plus other Harry Potter trivia..
Here's a preview of what's in the website....
What`s in a name?
J.K. Rowling is a collector of stange names, (she has whole notebooks of them) but what do the names in the Harry Potter books really mean? Some of them are from saints, place-names, war memorials, gravestones, and more!
Author: Kate Cheney
Date: 6/9/00

Remember, a lot of these are just guesses, and could be totally different from what Ms. Rowling thought.

Albus Dumbledore: Dumbledore means bumblebee! J.K. Rowling says that it "seemed to suit the headmaster, because one of his passions is music and I imagined him walking around humming to himself." Norfolkman says that Albus means "white" (maybe as opposed the "Dark"), but is also used proverbially to indicate a triumphant general (from the white horse "equus albus" which he would ride in victory procession). Also, thanks to Betsy for telling us that Albus can mean wisdom...

Aragog: the giant spider in the woods, now here`s a complicated one: Arachnid is a spider, right? Well, Gog is the name of a legendary giant. Shorten Arachnid to Ara and add Gog, what do you get? Ara-Gog, Spider Giant. . . I think that`s stretching it a bit, but you never know ;)

Argus Filch: the nosy caretaker who all the students try to avoid, now here`s a good one: Argus was a creature in Greek Mythology who had a hundred eyes and was ever watchful (isn`t that perfect for him?) Also, "filch" means "to steal" or "purloin" in modern British English. Stephanie says she found out that "filch" means "dirty"

Beauxbaton: Beaux Baton means "Beautiful Stick" (or maybe wand!) in French!

Draco Malfoy: Thanks to Betsy for this one: Athenian lawgiver whose harsh legal code punished both trivial and serious crimes in Athens with death -- hence the continued use of the word draconian to describe repressive legal measures. Draco is also Latin for "dragon" (like in Hogwarts school motto, Draco Dormiens Nunquam Titillandus) - remember that a Dragon is also referred to as a "worm" or a "snake", says Norfolkman.

Malfoy is old/middle French for "Bad Faith" - modern French would have it as "mal foi".

Fleur Delacour: Fleur de la Cour means "Flower of the court" in French!

Gilderoy Lockhart: the self-centered idiot who teaches "Defense of the Dark Arts" , did you know that Gilderoy was also the name of a famous highwayman of ballad fame who was reputedly handsome(that part sounds like our guy) and Lockhart is an Austrailan town near Wagga Wagga (remember, "Compose a poem about my defeat of the Wagga Wagga Werewolf"?)

Hermes: Percy`s owl, Hermes is also the name of the speedy Greek messenger of the Gods!

Hermione: Ms. Rowling says that she wanted Hermione (Her-my-uh-nee) to have an odd name so that real-life little girls wouldn`t be teased because they were know-it-alls like Hermione and shared the name (You know the type, heck I`m a muted version of Hermione, myself)

Hogwarts: JK made Hogwarts up, and then found out that Gogwart is a flower... she says it made her "chortle" (Thanks, Robin)

Lord Voldemort: Voldemort could be derived from the little-known evil wizard named Voldermortist. In another language, Voldermortist means "Lord of Evil" or in the simple form of Voldemort means "Dark Lord". The legend is that Voldermortist once tried to destroy Merlin before the time of King Arthur, by bewitching good people, and simply bribing those who already were evil. Legend has it that Merlin destroyed Voldermortist by using a simple paralyzing charm (or should we say full body bind?), fed him to the many headed beast (sounds like our Fluffy) of the lake, the Lady of the Lake`s pet, freed the bewitched people, and destroyed the evil men. That was maybe twelve, thirteen years before Arthur (Isn`t that about how long it was from Voldemort`s destruction until Harry started Hogwarts?).

Also, Robin says that Vol De Mort is (in French) "Flight of Death"

New flash: Ms. Rowling says she made the name up!

Lucius Malfoy: Lucius might be connected to Lucifer, the devil. Thanks to both Suzanne and Betsy for submitting this one!

Minerva McGonagall: the strict transfiguration professor, Minerva is also the name of the Roman goddess of Wisdom. McGonagall was also the name of a "bad poet" in the words of Ms. Rowling

Mr. Mason: the Masons were visitors of Vernon Dursley and Mr. Mason was described as a "rich builder". Did you know that a mason is "a person whose work is building with stone, brick, etc."? Cool, huh?

Mrs. Norris: a character from one of Jane Austen`s books

Peeves: to peeve is to irritate or annoy, and a peeve is a particular grievance or source of aggravation (doesn`t that fit our favorite poltergeist?!)

Professor Sprout: herbology professor, in her class plants "sprout"

Remus Lupin: Remus is the name of the brother of the founder of Rome, nursed by a she-wolf and Lupin means wolf-like (A wolf is Canis Lupis)

Ron Weasley: Ron Weasley, in another language, is called "Running Weasel." Running Weasel was a warlord in the 6th Dynasty. He was a brilliant statigist, and he never lost a game of chess (hmm. . .wasn`t it Ron who defeated McGonagall`s giant chess game?) Unfortunately, he died when a rat that had been dyed yellow (Scabbers!!) by his soldiers for fun earlier that day (that sounds like Fred and George), knocked over a lamp in his palace, burning it to the ground, and killing Running Weasel.

Rubeus Hagrid: One of the early Greek gods was the giant of jewels, or in Greek, Hagrid Rubeus, with Hagrid meaning giant and Rubeus meaning rubul, or jewel. This god was said to be the kindest of the gods, but Hades framed him for the death of Perseus`s - the killer of Medusa - son. He was therefore banned from Olympus, but Zeus took pity on the poor giant and gave him a job as the keeper of any godly beasts on Olympus. (is that not Hagrid in a nutshell?)

Ms. Rowling says that if you were "Hagrid" in old English you were having a bad night. She says that Hagrid is a big drinker and often has his own bad nights.

Severus Snape: Sever can mean to cut off someones head. Sever-us, hmm, I wonder if there is a connection? Or maybe it`s because he`s so "Severe." Norfolkman says, in Latin, severus means stern, severe, harsh, serious, rigid, austere and grim! The Severus family in Rome was a Patrician ("pure-blood") family amongst whose notables were Lucius Septimus Severus (Emperor AD 193-211) and Aurelius Alexander Severus (Emperor, AD AD222-234).

Sirius Black: Sirius, also called the Dog Star, is the brightest star in the sky! Stephanie says Sirius can mean "father"

Tom Marvolo Riddle: this is the best one yet (and the most obvious) Tom Marvolo Riddle is an anagram for "I am Lord Voldemort"

The URL is http://www.fandom.com/harrypotter/.html

Anyway, I agree, they're great books.

I just have a question. My book one is called Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone while the back of my book 4 states that it was called Harry Potter and the Sorcerors's Stone. What is the title anyway?

I want to add another question, pero spoiler...Sige wag na lang. Anyone I can email regarding a question on Wormtail and Voldemort? Dapat yung nakabasa na ng Book 3 & 4.

Oh yeah, I heard that Book 5 & 6 will talk about Lily Potter but it is just a rumor. And there's going to be a book on Quidditch and spells.

Damn, now I'll have to wait till 2001 for Book 5. This adds to the list of books I am waiting for in 2001. :(

Albus [Albus Dumbledore] - "white" in Latin

Argus [Argus Filch] - Argus was a Greek God who had a hundred eyes, and was therefore always on the lookout, since he never closed more than half his eyes while he slept.

Bagman [Ludo Bagman] - someone who collects money from illegal activities

Beauxbatons - French for 'handsome wands'

Cho [Cho Chang] - Japanese name meaning "butterfly"

Crookshanks - an old-fashioned way of saying 'bent legs'

Dementor - a play on the word "demented", or crazy. Thus a Dementor is one who makes you demented.

diagonal [Diagon Ally] - from angle to angle (thus, Diagon Ally means Crooked Alley)

Dobby - a "dobby" is a very old English name for a benevolent elf who would anonymously perform household tasks in the night, like the elves and the shoemaker.

Draco [Draco Malfoy] - Latin for "dragon"; also a constellation

Dudley [Dudley Dursley] - a play on 'dud', or broing person

Dumbledore [Albus Dumbledore] - 'Dumbledore' is an old English name for a bumblebee; the French word 'dore' means 'golden'.

Dursley - a small town in Britain

Expecto Patronum - similar words in Latin for "release protector"

Fawkes - named after Guy Fawkes, a Catholic terrorist who, about 400 years ago, attempted to blow up the English Houses of Parliament with 36 barrels of gunpowder. Although he did this in retaliation for the vicious anti-Catholic policies of James I, his name has lived in infamy ever since. Every year on the anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot, children burn an effigy of him on a bonfire, chanting charming ditties like, "Guy, Guy, Guy, Stick him in the eye, put him in a bonfire, there let him die," and letting off fireworks. Fawkes is a phoenix and therefore roses from flame.

Filch [Argus Filch] - to 'filch' means to 'steal'

Firenze - the Italian word for the city of Florence. Florence is the final resting place of Galileo Galilei, arguably the greatest astronomer who ever lived (a link to the centaur's passion for the stars).

Fleur Delacour - translates to 'flower of the heart' from French

Flitwick - a town in Britain outside of London

Hermione [Hermione Granger] - means 'eloquence'. Hermione is the feminine form of Hermes, the winged messenger of the Gods. Hermes was also an intermediary between the Gods and Man, and was therefore the God of divine inspiration: of inventiveness, cleverness and imagination; also Hermione was the daughter of Helen of Troy.

kappa - a Chinese water demon

Ludo [Ludo Bagman] - 'ludo' is Latin for 'to play'

Lumos - similar to the Latin word for "lamp" or "light" (as in luminate or illuminate)

Lupin [Remus Lupin] - derived from the latin word "lupus" which means wolf; a lupin is also a type of flower, common in England, which is named after the Latin word for 'wolfish'.

magus [animagus] - Latin for 'wizard'

Malfoy - 'Mal foi' means 'bad faith' or 'bad trust' in French.

Maxime [Olympe Maxime] - a reference to her size; 'Maxime' is French for 'principle' and she is the headmistress, or 'principal,' of Beauxbatons

Minerva [Minerva McGonagall] - the goddess of academics in Roman mythology

Muggle: According to JK Rowling, she created the word muggle from the English word mug, or fool.

Narcissa [Narcissa Malfoy] - created from the Roman myth of Narcissus, who fell in love with himself (very vain)

Nox - Latin for "night"

Patronus - Latin for 'protector,' or 'defender,' but it is ultimately derived from the Latin word 'pater,' which means 'father.'

Peeves - 'peeved' is a slang word for 'irritated'

Penseive - a play on 'pensive' meaning "deep in thought". Also, the Latin word 'penser,' means 'think'.

Poppy [Poppy Pomfrey] - one of the oldest medicinal plants. The opium it contains has been used as a soporific and painkiller for thousands, perhaps tens of thousands of years.

Remus [Remus Lupin] - Remus and Romulus were twins abandoned as babies and suckled by a she-wolf. They would later become the two founders of Rome.

Rubeus [Rubeus Hagrid] - "red" in Latin

Salazar [Salazar Slytherin] - Antonio Salazar was the fascist dictator of Portugal for 36 years until his death in 1968. Though never officially an ethnic cleanser, he was a colonialist, who ruthlessly put down ethnic uprisings his his country's colonies in Africa. His name is perhaps used as a reference to the dictators past, such as Hitler, who believed in ethnic purity, just as Slytherin did.

Scabbers - a scab is a slang term for someone who does no work and who scrounges off others.

Severus [Severus Snape] - derived from "severe", meaning strict or stern

Sinistra [Prof. Sinistra]: a play on the word "sinister", meaning 'suggestive of evil or harm.' Also Latin for "left".

Sirius [Sirius Black] - "dog" in Latin, also a star of the constellation Canis Major that is the brightest star in the sky (also called the "Dog Star")

Skeeter [Rita Skeeter] - a skeeter is American slang for a mosquito (apt for a female bloodsucker like her). Also, 'little insects' (like mosquitos) in Italian is 'paparazzi'.

Snape - a small town in Britain

Sybil [Sybil Trelawney] - sybils were ancient prophetesses who foretold the future at the Oracle at Delphi.

Trelawney [Sybil Trelawney] - Trelawney is the hero of a Cornish poem called 'And Shall Trelawney Die?', perhaps a reference to her custom of telling one student a year he will die before its end.

Voldemort - a combination of French terms: vol meaning "flight", de meaning "of" and mort meaning "death, killing" in French and Latin. "Vol de mort" can also mean "Theft by death," implying Voldemort 'stole' Harry's family from him by killing his parents.

Hermione will die??? Gosh, i think i'm gonna be depressed... I know, I know, it's just a rumor... but still... :~(
Nice to know Ginny gets to marry Harry, haha! I love it when underdogs win! :D
Sigh! Still can't get over Hermione dying... :(
I'd like to see her married to Ron... what a wacky couple they'd make. :sweet:

Harry Potter is probably the most exciting book series I've ever read! Hanggang book 3 pa nga lang ako, so may mga bagay sa prediction list na di ko pa alam. Ano ba namang rumor yan, mamamatay si Hermione! Huwag naman. But I love the prediction that she and Ron will end up together, tapos Harry and Ginny! Nakakatuwa ang pares nila.

J. K. Rowling is irresistibly great! Like you, I can't wait for the movie.

It is 2001 and I wonder if Harry Potter is still HOT here in the Philippines! Are audio tapes available in our local stores regarding these books? If yes, please do inform me about it here in the thread!

I usually am good at figuring out the way the story ends (with authors who write in series or continuance) but the second book got me off track for a moment...Good thing my memory didn't fail me near the end! <lol>

J.K. has an odd way of putting the knots together...You never really know which one is real and which is just a knot-looking-lump!

Yes, indeed they are soooooo expensive (I've only read till Chamber of Secrets). I think I'm going to go write her an extremely remarkable letter about her books (after I've read all of course borrowing from pals) and perhaps she'll send me a complete set --- like my friend once received from a writer named Robert Munsch...

I wonder if it would be softbound (paperbacks) or hardbound. And should I have it signed? (Though I'm not that kind of a fan) But I think a picture with her daughter wouldn't be so bad either...

Oh gosh! I can't decide what she's supposed to give me! Help!

As usual, Rowling has written a fast-paced story full of surprises. Just when the traitor at Hogwarts seems obvious, it turns out to be someone else. When death strikes, it's a shock. Readers might think they know who's on what side and what they're after, but don't be too sure. Rowling is really good at turning smoking guns into red herrings....So, how long until book five?

I am referring to The Goblet of Fire

Sorry I haven't visited this thread in such a long time. Sayang I had an extra set of HP Audio Tapes for sale last month! Books 1 to 4. But then I gave them to my brother and nephews for Christmas nalang. :D

I do have the CD's... But they're more expensive than the tapes. http://smilecwm.tripod.com/net5/wacky.gif

________________________________
Harry Potter 5: The Order of The Phoenix

Harry Potter enters his 5th year at Hogwarts with more dread than daring. Lord Voldemort has risen again, and although the Dark Lord is not present, Harry feels his presence everyday. His scar hurts, his writing sometimes fails him, and his studies are more troubling than exciting. Hermione, now a prefect, offers to help him in any way she can. Ron, his best friend, joins in. Paranoia reigns.

The faculty also undergoes some major upheavals. There are now 2 Defense Against the Dark Arts teachers: Mad-Eye Moody and Professor Lupin. There are also 2 Potions teachers Professor Snape and a Hogwarts alumnus. There is a new teacher named Lysandra Leonessa, an all-Muggle who seems to be tied to Professor Lupin in some way.

Harry has a new pet as well: Snuffles, a black dog. Thus, nearly well protected, Harry is surrounded by teachers and fellow students. Dumbledore monitors him closely. The new faculty keep their wands near and never fail to check on him. Lupin and Leonessa are his nearest friends, but they both deal with each other uneasily. As though drawn by some dying sense of adventure, Harry interviews the normally cheerful Miss Leonessa.

Miss Leonessa does not reveal anything, but all that Harry has to do is to check his wizard album. He finds his parents surrounded by the new, once-young, faculty, along with Sirius Black and Lupin and, oh yes, Pettigrew. He knows that they are keeping a protective shield around him, but can that shield be broken? How was it penetrated? And why does Professor Lupin have his arm around Miss Leonessa? Does it have something to do with his collection of books of fiction written by Miss Leonessa, all of which he keeps from her?

Of course, Hermione declares in her you-idiot-haven’t-you-read-Hogwarts-A-History? tone, Professor Lupin and Miss Leonessa were in love! That of course, might just be the surface, because Harry notices that Dumbledore always calls the two teachers to his office. Hermione researches on Lupin and Leonessa, then finds that they were both Quidditch players: Lupin a beater for Gryffindor, Leonessa a chaser for Ravenclaw. Good research and suddenly Hermione’s last as she begins to fail and flounder in her exams and quizzes.

However, Hermione is not alone. All the prefects start failing and floundering. Miss Leonessa holds a review class, but to no avail. Professor Lupin tries to help and comfort her, but she casts him away, this time, cruelly. He, in his own frustration, trains the Gryffindor Quidditch team with more ferocity and less spirit. With some spark left in her, Hermione makes it rain one afternoon when Professor Lupin is zooming around the Quidditch field on his broomstick.

In her pity for Lupin, Lysandra Leonessa tends to his fever and is reunited with him. Professor Dumbledore, ever the all-seeing eye, thanks Hermione for her good idea.

Quidditch season arrives, and it is opened by an exciting exhibition game, Boys vs. Girls. On one side are Lupin, along with a selected group, and Harry as the seeker. On the other are McGonagall, Leonessa, selected girls, and the seeker Cho Chang. It is expected to be a game of wits, until Harry catches the Snitch and all brooms fail.

Chaos ensues. Only powerful Dark Magic can cause broomsticks to fall. Only powerful Dark Magic can cause the prefects and the top students of the school to fail. Someone has penetrated the protection of Hogwarts and is advancing fast. As soon as the new faculty is ready, and Lupin, Leonessa, and McGonagall are healed, they begin patrolling the grounds. Fortunately, all disasters seem to wane, and, by Christmas, despite all the students being forcefully kept at Hogwarts, everyone is happy.

One night, a scream rings through Hogwarts. Several students report that a hooded figure, shaking and clinging to Professor McGonagall, is led to Dumbledore’s office. Valentines’ has just passed with about a hundred arguments between Ron and Hermione and all the festivities are drowned by the ensuing paranoia.

Harry is called to the Headmaster’s office the next day, where he finds Professor Lupin and Miss Leonessa. Dumbledore orders them to tell Harry what has happened.

With both teachers contributing, Harry learns of the Order of the Phoenix, established just before he was born, and created to combat Lord Voldemort’s power. Made up of the closest of friends, including the Potters, Lupin, Leonessa, and Dumbledore, the Order of the Phoenix was once strong and unbendable. Lord Voldemort, as a once suave Tom Riddle, had tried to unite his powers with Lysandra, who is actually a powerful wizard skilled in the dark arts but who refuses to use them. Lysandra was able to harness the strength of the Order and defend herself. The Dark Powers, however, penetrated into the weakest of them Peter Pettigrew.

Because of Pettigrew, the order was broken. Even then, Lord Voldemort nearly died after trying to kill Harry. Despite the apparent triumph, Lysandra left the order in shame, thinking that Lupin and Dumbledore would disown her as one of their kind. Upon her return, both to Hogwarts and to the order, she vowed to both protect Harry and destroy Lord Voldemort. For reasons known only to Dumbledore and a Lupin now fiercely protective of his girl, Voldemort’s attack on Lysandra had nearly broken her. She and Lupin bid Harry to be careful, as she has dreamed of Lord Voldemort’s return.

(SPOILER WARNING!!!)

In a series of strange events, Harry encounters Draco Malfoy, who, at first despising him, now tries to kill him. He encounters Draco and a band of Slytherins one night in the Gryffindor common room. What follows is what appears to be a Wizard’s duel, promptly stopped by the re-formed Order of the Phoenix. The Slytherin students drop unconscious, Neville Longbottom among them, numbering himself among the exploited and contributing the Gryffindor password. Snape administers the Truth Potion to them all, but the students have been lost since the first day of school. Their minds have been conquered by their parents, but their natural childlikeness, though hidden, prevents complete conquest and even Harry’s death. Malfoy even tries to kill himself in a fit of Wizard anger, but Harry saves him. Their enmity does not end.

But this book does.

The Order of the Phoenix uncovers Voldemort’s plan: Weaken all the top Hogwarts students, cause enmity amongst them, then use their disunity to enter through the shield of the Order. Everything goes against him again, but everyone knows that this will not last long. The Order this remains as strong as ever, and its members protect Harry, knowing perhaps that, with all the boy’s power, Voldemort would want to get to him and purchase the power at the price of Harry’s life. All will end if this should happen, and, with dread mixed with his courage, Harry leaves Hogwarts for another vacation.
