You know phathead, when I was starting "The God of Small Things" it was like a going on a gravelly road. I always got stumbled by her eccentirc English; sometimes I was turned off by a sense of contrivedness in the language. I am in the midpart now, getting used to the language and it is getting really intriguing. Hope to finish it soon. This is getting me long. But it is not unusual with me. I had the book with for two years now. Anyway, it doesn't bother me. A book is not really finished when you read the last page and closed it. It lives on. Forever. I think everybody should think of their books like that.

Phathead: I love James Clavell as well.
Have almost all his books: Taipan, Shogun, King Rat and Noble House. I think that he's brilliant!
Books I recently finished that may be worth your while:
1. Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things
Contrary to what people say, it's not
actually a difficult read. Have you tried
Salman Rushdie's The Ground Beneath Her
Feet? Now that's an experience where
you'll be lost in all the metaphors. He
was much better in Midnight's Children.
2. Pearl Buck's The Good Earth
I've been hearing so much about this book.
A lot of my friends read it for their
book report (jeez). Finally opened my
dusty copy and you know what? It's pure
magic. You'll be transported back to the
days of Old China with all their wonderful
culture and ways.
3. Falling Leaves by Adeline Yen Mah
Powerful, gripping - it moved me. But
since you're probably a guy and all, this
one runs the risk of being a "chick's
book"...
4. Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel
Garcia Marquez
This one is all about unrequited love.
Never have I read about old people
actually making love and its not really
all that disgusting (you know, loose flesh
and tired bones and all) but actually
quite beautiful and inspiring.
Besides Gabriel Garcia Marquez is always
a safe bet.
5. In Praise of the Stepmother by Mario
Vargas Llosa
Dig this premise: what if a little boy
age 5 or so actually had the scheming mind
of an adult?! Watch this little boy make
a go for his stepmother! Interesting,
surprising, a definite pleaser. On a side
note, the descriptions are so intricate -
down to Don Rigoberto's (the father)
strange and complicated bathing habits.
I found myself actually reading 5 whole
pages of how he meticulously cleaned his
ears!
Right now am reading Frank McCourt's Angela's Ashes which is all about childhood hell in Limerick,Ireland. Actually quite depressing but the prose is beautifully, elegantly written.
Any books I should check out?

On a personal note I'd say that I believe that GOD exists or that there's a Superior Being much greater than us.
I wouldn't know if you or people would agree with me so I would just like to quote what the author wrote in his book:
The code may be neither "right" or "wrong". It probably tells us what might happen, not what will happen.
But since we cannot let our world be destroyed, we cannot simply wait - we must assume that the warning in the Bible code is real.

it's quite refreshing to know that there are still people out there who enjoy reading books. i agree about erich segal - i love his books, although i was disappointed with "only love". "man, woman & child", and "doctors" are personal favorites.
i also highly recommend "the alchemist" and "the fifth mountain", both by paulo coelho. "a wrinkle in time" by madeleine l'engle is a must. so is any book by gabriel garcia marquez (especially "100 years of solitude").
"to kill a mockingbird" by harper lee is a good read. and nick bantock's "griffin & sabine" trilogy and "the venetian's wife" are creative and mind-boggling. "crime and punishment" by dostoevsky will definitely blow your mind.
anyway, now i've begun reading c.s. lewis' "the chronicles of narnia".

Hi, fly,
Einstein's Dreams is enchantment and delight. Every word rolls in the mouth, pure chocolate. Lightman pushes and pulls your notions of time and probability, shining an impossible light through the retina that bounces back and forth inside your skull until you have to stop looking at the page for fear of overdosing on beauty.
He tells of a place where time is birds, another where time is at its end, another where time does not move forward.
If you are a writer, Einstein's Dreams will either push you to write with all your heart, or make you despair of ever writing something as splendid and bold.
