better get branded ones... its more expensive but has better product support and warranty and higher resale value in case you plan to upgrade.

these DIY notebooks aka "BTO" are best alternative for a pricey branded notebooks. They are "whitebooks" that has no exact brand but are comparable to those branded since for some models, barebone units are basically the same. And that villman's viper series and pcexpress' Xmobile series are some best options for the BTO laptops. At a relatively cheaper price you can customize the specs according to your needs and even upgrade the parts in the near future.

Viper does not offer website support for drivers and bios.
IMHO, no use to have the latest features but old drivers... features will not be maximized. http://cooltoyzph.com/viewarticle.php?aid=4

I was expecting this FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) post again from CoolTOYZph. :rotflmao:

Right. Most resellers of whitebox computers have never had a need to provide their own website for support. Such drivers come from 3rd parties and vendors with good support will gladly tell you where to download them. Do not believe all these false propaganda coming from CoolTOYZph. They have their own business to protect. :)

It all boils down to trusting Villman as a vendor. If you do, go ahead and buy it.

@krakista,
Do not believe all these false propaganda coming from CoolTOYZph. They have their own business to protect.
1. You acknowledge Viper does not have website support why then label the post as false?
2. Selling Generic laptops would actually be good for business had we decided to carry them. Again, why label the post as Propaganda.

Please do educate us. Thank you :D

@krakista,

1. You acknowledge Viper does not have website support why then label the post as false?Where in my post did I say specifically Viper does not have website support? Assuming one does not have website support, much more important anyway is having in-store support.
2. Selling Generic laptops would actually be good for business had we decided to carry them. Again, why label the post as Propaganda.Take note of the word again in my post. View it from the context of all the past posts you have repeatedly made regarding the issue here in PEx and TipidPC. It wasn't posted once, twice but many times. It is propaganda.
Please do educate us. Thank you :DI hope you learned something today. You're welcome. :D

Most resellers of whitebox computers have never had a need to provide their own website for support - this one:D

Never was it mentioned that Villman does not have store support. Villman is actually one of the more admired companies when it comes to RMA and this we have mentioned in other posts.

On-line support is important because as a mobile computer user, with highlight on mobile, on-line support is the most accessible means of keeping a laptop up to date.

We welcome healthy debates as in this way we both learn.
Why call an opinion propoganda? The thread starter asked for opinion...

- this one:DI said most, not all.
Never was it mentioned that Villman does not have store support. Villman is actually one of the more admired companies when it comes to RMA and this we have mentioned in other posts.Having store support is a given. It's not such a big deal unless you're one of D'Chum's buddies. :D For many, especially those who are having laptops as desktop replacements, store support is enough.
On-line support is important because as a mobile computer user, with highlight on mobile, on-line support is the most accessible means of keeping a laptop up to date.Having online support is good. But not having it does not mean the end of the world for the mobile user. Actually, a lot of users have not found the need to update their BIOS and drivers so why stress it? If I needed an update, I wouldn't dare do it on the road. If I own a whitebox unit and really needed an update I could just ask my vendor to provide the URL for downloading it. It should be available in a component manufacturer's website. I don't see any problem.Selling Generic laptops would actually be good for business had we decided to carry them.So why not sell them? Maybe selling overpriced refurbished units is still the better business? Anyway, I can understand as there are certain parties that just don't like to see prices come down.We welcome healthy debates as in this way we both learn.
Why call an opinion propoganda? The thread starter asked for opinion...I've already answered your question. Anyway, your sidesteps and defensiveness reinforces further that it is propaganda.

@krakista, Margins are actually better with generic laptops.
One will only need to go to Glee Electronics and purchase a gleebook, slap on a sticker of your choice and sell under your name.
The Margins on the Hp NX6120 is only 1,500/unit at 42,500 whereas the margin on a generic laptop is usally 12%

Recently Blue-notes have also been offering open brand DIY that have been very tempting if only it had a complete website support by blue.

As a hobby shop, operated by fellow laptop users/enthusiasts we have not been been able to justify selling generic laptops because of the lack of on-line support and solutions for previously encountered problems. It is one of the advantages of being a hobby shop that we can select those that we are only comfortable to sell.

In the article http://cooltoyzph.com/viewarticle.php?aid=4 we listed a few examples of laptop bugs.
IBM THINKPAD G40
Symptom corrected by version 1TET87WW (1.05)
- (New) Adjust FAN control.

Symptoms corrected by version 1TET88WW (1.06)
- (New) Warning message does not appear when Password characters are overflow in BIOS Setup menu.
- (New) Update Micro Controller Unit(MCU).
- (Fix)No display problem at LCD close and open at extended display mode.

Symptom corrected by version 1TET99WW (1.14)
- (Fix) This BIOS update contains an Intel errata patch for the microprocessor firmware. It addresses a potential issue which might cause a system to exhibit erratic behavior such as a system hang, reboot, blue screen or Kernel Panic (Linux), and may also cause in-progress system operations (e.g. file, I/O) to fail. The possibility of this behavior is believed to be limited, but IBM strongly recommends that customers install this update as soon as possible to prevent the possibility of the issues listed above.

Without on-line support even the store support team will not have the resources to fix the laptop issues complained by the customer as those listed above. If my system has erratic behavior then it will not be efficient.

If you can share us your remedies on the issues/fixes noted on the IBM G40 model it would be helpful. We can not find a 3rd party fix as you posted previously.

If I own a whitebox unit and really needed an update I could just ask my vendor to provide the URL for downloading it
- From experience, Vendors will not release the name of the OEM because it will defeat their own brand.

Are you a current white book user, what whitebook brand do you use?
