Last wednesday, my hubby (who is an alumnus of Letran high school) deliriously asked me to watch the 2nd match between hasty rivals, Letran and PCU. I was pretty much vexed, considering what a bastketball numskull i am. Yet much to my chagrin, I found myself skipping latin aerobics classes and munching Combos in front of the television. Minutes after, I was in a frenzy, trying so hard to contain my proclivities for pointing a dirty finger (on tv, can you imagine?!) at the players of PCU. Thank god it was a smash! The Letran Knights really blew the Dolphins off with a spaking 20-point lead right before the last two minutes. I was very much elated and immediately texted my hubby, announcing the great news he was so frantic about. But despite that one brief moment of jubilation, I was disappointed. I have not seen my man so ecstatic and persistent on texting, until this reeling NCAA championship came in. It bothered me so much how overexcited he was about one frisky ballgame when he graduated ages ago! I had the instant desire to pulverize him! I put up this great argument that, "mabuti pa yung basketball, sinipag siyang kamustahin. samantalang ako, if i don't text, he wounldn't either." Yes it was a pretty much annoying thought. It was childish. It was nonsense. It was sickening.
But the realization dawned on me when he brought me to the deciding game yesterday. Araneta became a bedlam of thunderous cheers from both camps. It reminded me so much of "gladiator days" with the Roman empire, when the humongous stadium trembled with the roaring crowds. That's when it hit me. AS a keen observant at the Letran bleachers, I've seen how people danced and clapped in anticipation of victory. By the time I was carried away by the pandemonium, my hand already hurt from the rounds of applause I myself have rendered.
It was the school spirit that brought so many men and women together--my hubby included. It was a rekindling of the values of the school that has contributed to making him the man he is now. It was a part of him, an attachment that would never be forgotten as it is a reflection of himself, to me, to others, to the rest of the world.
I apologized for the credulous act. Now i know better. and from this day on, I know there would be more Letran championships to come. And i would be one among the many yelling for them...
