!!calling all bookworms!!

i finally started reading again..(yey me!!)
and i need suggestions on good books to read.
i'm enjoying 'mystery/suspense' novels right
now but i'd also like to try other genre -
romance, maybe(not the 'fabio' on the cover
type) yung parang light romance na hindi
naman pang-teens.(if there is such)

so, read a book you can't put down lately??
let me know, k..

Try Diary of Bridget Jones, bing2x. They have it in Powerbooks. It's pretty light reading, very humorous, and has a lot of romance stuff. I think you'll like it.

try reading high fidelity by nick hornby. this book will teach you how to understand the male ego... and how we handle life, lovelife in particular. i hear they're turning this novel into a movie starring no less than mr. john cusack.

his second nove, entitled about a boy looks interesting too. weird lead character... but funny, nonetheless.

want light reading?
try the harry potter series. its really really entertaining. its really supposed to target the pre-adolescent market, but old people will find it really engaging. i literally couldn't put it down. and every person to whom i lent the book (i've only read the first one, but there are already 3 out, and a 4th one coming soon) says the same thing.
stress relief stuff. highly recommended for those who want to escape reality for a while.. :)

why don't you try RED DRAGON by Thomas Harris. Its the prequel to Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal. It's where Hannibal Lecter was first introduced.

Naku, I read fast! Used to finish those embarrassing pulp romance books in 2 hours. :)

May I also suggest Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt? It's an autobiography, but it's so funny and well-written you'll hate finishing it. It won the Pulitzer Prize, but it's very easy reading, and in some parts, you'll really be in stitches sa katatawa.

I've heard the same thing about those Harry Potter series. I haven't actually read one yet but it's definitely on my target list! What's the first one about?

Ira:
Gosh, all I have to say to that is "ditto". :P hehe... My mom got me hooked on those novels one summer and I read 3 or 4 everyday!

Good luck in reading those novels bing2x! :) (try reading "The Sun Also Rises" by Earnest Hemmingway, a little depressing and bitter, but it's actually really good.)

Chalk up another vote for "Harry Potter"! The book was actually very good, despite some rather inconsistent character development. (Did you know, by the way, that it finished second at some literary award competition to Nobel Prize winner Seamus Heaney? Man, that MUST mean it's good.)

If you decide that you do like that kind of storyline, bing2x, you might want to try (as a matter of fact, I demand you do ;)) "The Chronicles of Narnia" by C.S. Lewis. If you must have the kind of ephemereal mythological philosophical children's lit, I highly recommend it. Remember "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe"? It was taken from the second installment of the Chronicles.

sampaguita:
well.. as i've said, i think it targets the pre-adolescent age group, kaya the plot is really simple. its about a neglected orphan boy who discovers he's actually a wizard. he finds out when, on his 10th birthday, he receives an invitation to attend the finest school of wizardy and witchcraft around. there are 8 grades that he has to pass before he becomes a full fledged wizard, which accounts for the 8 books in the series.
its really very simple, but the writing style is soo engaging. the author is really good. reading is effortless talaga... and you end up so involved in the story... like turning the page is the same thing as actually opening the locked door in the forbidden wing of the wizard academy. :) galing... if you want review about it, you can find some in amazon.com, for all three books. i've only read the first one. exams are coming, so i'm saving the next two for summer reading.
i recommend it talaga if you want to relax. school is really tough for me, as in real pressure, and this was a perfect escape for me.. :) read it na! :)

hey bing2x, try catcher in the rye by J.D. salinger

rasec: what genre is this book?

btw, just an update on what i've finished reading;

'kiss the girls' by james patterson - 5 *'s !
it's so, so good..will have you guessing til the last page. i was quite disappointed with the movie version though.

'when the wind blows' by zachary alan fox - 3.5 *'s
another page turner but ending is not that good.
there was a mention of the philippines re:
rich americans sponsoring/adopting young p.i children
only to use them as sex partners.

'gone baby gone' by dennis lehane - 1 *
he got some rave reviews, but i did not like
his work.

'intensity' by dean koontz - 2.5 *'s

i also picked-up 2(so far) romance classics-
'wuthering heights' - emily bronte
'lady chatterly's lover - d.h. lawrence
i think i'm gonna take a break from my mysteries
and start wuthering heights for now.. :)

I've just finished reading Simon and the Oaks by Swedish author Marianne Fredriksson. It's a story set in Sweden of the late 30's to the early 50's. It's actually a nice read.

The book I can't put down for 5 years (& still going!) is Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert. Ang boring talaga, thrice ko na inuulet di ko pa rin matapos :P LOL :)

In connection with gracia's post, most of my friends loved Jude Deveraux's "Knight in Shining Armor" and "Eternity" but my all-time fave is "The Conquest" :) Adult romances with little historical twists! Also, Sidney Sheldon's 1st novel "Bloodline" isn't half-bad. :) At aba, si wAgKaNgMaKuLiT nagbabasa na ng mga ganyan?! Tsk tsk :P Hehehe ;)

I like all of Stephen King's books that I really don't care what people say when they criticize his works :P But I guess it's safe to suggest to start with "Different Seasons" which is a compilation of short stories. The more familiar ones made into good movies are "Stand By Me" and "The Shawshank Redemption". Also since "The Green Mile" is raking a lot of good movie reviews, you'd like to consider reading that too. Though, "Gerald's Game" and "It" really gave me the spooks! ;) Now, I'm still stuck with another of King's short story compilations called "Nightmare and Dreamscapes" :)

chez-o, papabasa ko sa kuya ko yung "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon" tapos sabihin ko sayo review nya, hehe :)

Mister Dean, try "The Screwtape Letters" by C.S. Lewis. It's about this devil (Screwtape) trying to teach his nephew (Wormwood) on how to tempt a human into sinning. ;)

rasec, "Catcher in the Rye" and "The Little Prince" are favorites of mine! :D I also read them when I was in high school, but they were both worth the time! :)

anybody know where i can get a good book about investments - short and long term basis?

Gilbey
Apr 3, 2000, 04:18 AM
ncie books..... gem instead of reading about investsments long or short - read about people.. they are more interesting to learn.

i like sci fi / fantasy because it usually deals with kingdoms and politics which are applicable in our day to day lives such as the office!
