The Center for Micro-Hydro Technology for Rural Electrification (CeMTRE) of the College of Engineering held its second Manufacturer’s Training-Workshop on Micro-hydro Turbine Fabrication on July 25-30 at the Ateneo de Davao University.

Designed to improve the fabrication and maintenance of cross and axial flow turbines used in micro-hydropower plants, the six-day workshop gathered current and prospective manufacturers of the said equipment. During the activity, participants were taught how to correctly construct the turbines to ensure maximum efficiency.

CeMTRE Project Leader Engr. Godofredo Salazar facilitated the event. Present during the training were CeMTRE Training and Networking Coordinator Dr. Manuel Belino, chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department; CeMTRE Demo Plant Coordinator Engr. Jose Hernandez; CeMTRE Design Engineer Engr. Isidro Marfori III; and CeMTRE field engineer Engr. Angelito Torres.

The CeMTRE is a three-year collaborative project of DLSU-Manila, Department of Energy (DOE), and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to accelerate micro-hydro power developments in the country. The Center was established in January 2003 and is set to complete its programs by December 2005.

It was in 1997 when the University first tapped micro hydro technology to bring a steady supply of electricity to remote provinces in the country particularly Abra. To date, the University has built two operating micro hydro power plants in the area and is set to build four more plants.
