With Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft all making a huge dive into the 128 bit console market, will Sega survive this?

yes they will... as much as i want to get my hands on the playstation 2 (they're friggin selling it for 30000 in greenhills!), crazy taxi has me hooked...and that's just one of the reasons...tony hawk looked fantastic on the playstation..what more on the dreamcast...although shen mue didn't sell as well as expected, i think it's still a benchmark for a different kind of gaming..a new genre so to speak..i'm sure sega will make sure the next one leaps and bounds better than the first one..i think there's no problem with what the dreamcast can do..they just need more support...can anyone say shinobi? sonic 2? nights? daytona 2? sega gt? i think sega's strength lies in the sequels it can produce...and they should take advantage of these...the dreamcast has an adavantage over microsoft, sony, and nintendo because it was released first...and by the time those new systems come out...its price would have decreased by then...

what i think sega should do:

1. for gosh sakes talk to namco, capcom, etc. and all those other companies that made all the good games on the playstation...look at soul calibur and re:codename veronica...

2. dvd?

3. make perfect arcade translations

The problem with Sega is that they just DON'T GET IT. Yeah, they released the Dreamcast early and it sold well in the U.S., but it stunk up the place in Japan. That's a bigger insult right there since Sega is always going to be a Japanese-owned company. with games like Soul Calibur, the Dreamcast has supposedly already maximized all of its power and capabilities. THIS EARLY IN THE PLATFORM'S LIFE, THEY'VE ALREADY DONE THIS? What do people have to look forward to in the future? With the PS2 releases of Gran Turismo 2000, Ridge Racer V, and Street Fighter EX3, they've only tapped into 1/10 of it's power.

Sega rocked the video gaming industry when it released its Genesis/Mega-Drive to compete with the Family Computer/Nintendo Entertainment System. Since then, they've fallen way short by releasing the disaster known as the Saturn, right on the heels of the original PlayStation. ALvs^ is correct when he/she mentions that Sega should talk more in depth with 3rd part developers. That's where the strength of Sony lies. at present, the PS2 is already killing Dreamcast in Japan, it's only a matter of time before it is completely wiped out in the U.S. If they don't do something radical soon, they might end up concentrating just on making games, not new gaming systems.

If you smell what The Rock is cookin!

In a word, NO! In the world game market, they already have a low single digit percentage share and that is bound to go even lower once the Playstation 2 comes out in the US.

Sad to say, but if they don't get more third-party support, i don't think SEGA will survive in the hardware business. If only they could've snagged Electronic Arts (NBA Live, Madden, The Sims [it would've been possible with the Dreamcast] and a million other games...), and more NAMCO support (tekken tag anyone?). I'm happy with my dreamcast, don't get me wrong, but I just can't see the possibility of a console surviving on 3 new games a month.

unmm...look again...sega just came up with a killer move..in the states at least..they're gonna offer a 200 dollar rebate, so more or less the dreamcast is free..even if it means subscribing for the internet service, people are still gonna get it anyway...

and yes, sega did launch early...but they did succeed at it...i don't agree that soul calibur already used up the full potential of the dreamcast...we all know the dreamcast can push up to at least 3 million polys..on the same note, u guys should go to this addy: http://www.dailyradar.com/features/game_feature_page_584_1.html<;---it's a comparison of dead or alive 2 for the playstation 2 and the dreamcast. they're even saying that the dreamcast version is graphically superior to the playstation 2..the only difference noticeable difference is that the ps2 version is deeper in terms of gameplay, well, it did come out later right?

let's remember that shen mue, super gt: homologation special, eternal arcadia,

it's still too early to tell whether sega can still succeed with the dreamcast, but if you ask me now, i think they're too prestigious a company to make the same mistakes that they made with the saturn.. i myself thought it was all hype when the dreamcast wasn't even available...but now that iv actually had the chance to own one, i'd say they're in pretty good shape...

*u guys should try crazy taxi...hello sleepless nights..

Sega's back is against the wall considering that they haven't signed up a number of the big name publishers like Electronic Arts. With Playstation 2 coming around, and the X-Box and the Dolphin looming just around the corner (okay, so maybe a few corners away), it would be very difficult for the Dreamcast to survive for more than two years.

The Dreamcast is sure fun right now but in order for any gaming console to survive, it needs to establish enough installed units, enough software developers, and enough buyers of these software (games) over the course of at least five years. These gaming companies win from the licensing fees they collect from each game sold. With the PC gaming market taking off, and the Playstation 2, Dolphin, and X-Box all arriving full force, expect to see the Dreamcast die pretty soon.

poor sega. now what? i've been reading rumors that microsoft just might take over scea. but what about sega of japan? is soj part of the bargain? it's been noted that the dreamcast is doing way better in the US than in japan, even with the online gaming of japan's dreamcast functional and with a couple of games under it's belt (in the U.S., it's only chu-chu rocket that you can play online, all the other games like sega rally don't have online multiplayer in the U.S. version). any insights on why this is so? japan has all the great games but how come it isn't doing as well as the U.S. market? before, the saturn did rather well in japan but completely flopped in the U.S. why the turn-around?

Sony PS2 sold 980,000 units on opening day weekend in Japan. Dreamcast has sold over 4.5million units worldwide since it's launch. This seems to be a great indicator, Sony selling 30%in 1 weekend of Dreamcast's entire installed user base. And this considering that Sony's lauch games were farily lacking. Only Ridge Racer V was a worthy title. Sega had the ultimate launch title cast, Soul Caliber being the juggernaut. Sony will have Tekken Tag, The Bouncer, and GT 2000 at the end of the month in Japan. This will probably set push PS2 sales further.
The dreamcast is a good machine. The launch strategy was good, and comes with a good compliment of games already. In terms of capability, Soul Calibur and Dead or Alive 2 will use up about 50% of the Dreamcast's capability. DOA2 looks better in the DC than PS2 as reported. But what was shown was not the final copy of the ps2 version. 1 thing going for the DC is that it is easier to program for. That's probably why the games there look better than the games of the PS2. But this is only temporary. PS2 games will look better. A shop in Virra Mall just recently got it's hands on Tekken Tag for the PS2. The demo left me breathless. Can't wait for the Bouncer.
Meanwhile, gotta save some money for new hardware. It looks like PS2 for now. But i'll wait until some enterprising Taiwanese chips the PS2. Let's hope that happens soon.

yeah i saw tekken tag also in virra mall... and i'm sure that i'm also gonna save up for a ps2...not because of tekken tag though, am waiting for games in the mode of metal gear solid...am also waiting for the english version of vagrant story and chrono cross..

ive actually gotten a chance to compare tekken tag for the ps2 and soul calibur, i could be mistaken but i think soul calibur looks better...

From 39,000 the week after launch, some stores now sell PS2s between 32,000 and 35,000. Don't even ask Gamestuff, ********* ang mga nandoon.

MURA NA YON it sells in singapore at about 1,700 dollars (x25)anyways sega still will survive cuz their SEGA-Dreamcast is a big hit in Australia, Singapore, and the States. Kaya lang naman sikat ang Playstation sa atin kasi mura ang pirated CDs

SEGA has been hinting since forever that they would close down their console manufacturing business even if the Dreamcast becomes a huge hit. I guess that in itself is an indication that SEGA won't be a big player in the console market forever. That's what happens to companies who get burned really bad. Its future lies in game developing especially when its Sega Sports division earned respect from everybody with NBA2K (my fave game on the DC right now... and yah... Crazy Taxi a really close second :) ) and especially NFL2K . The impossible scenario of seeing Sega games on the PS2 doesn't seem so impossible no more... which is a good thing.

By the way, issit just me? or is there someone right there who hates the X-Box already? They introduce it and show a music video? It didn't even look like an actual game, ferchrissakes!

And Nintendo's Dolphin? Hmmm... a high res Pokemon game? I hope Nintendo realizes that there actually are adult gamers (you know.. the people who actually have the cash?) around. I don't wanna knock on them too much 'coz Mario will always have a special place in my heart :D .... and yah... Pokemon Stadium looks hella fun... doh!

They're selling the PS2 at Alabang for 25,000 with 2 free games. Metal Gear Solid on a DVD game disc... I just heard a million mouths drool... I hope it comes out soon!

Well, the real score is - will they have continuous support from third-party companies (software companies)!

Let's put it this way, you have a new gaming console and the games have good graphics, enough number of games, blah, blah, blah....

BUT......after a year (when Dolphin & X-Box arrives), will the third-party companies still develop games for your console?
Putting Saturn as an example, it gained popularity because of the RPGs when it was launched. But when PS entered the scene and offered good quality of games, it overshadowed Saturn.
With the corporate relationship of third-party companies to Sony and Microsoft, i guess these two companies will have the edge on their new gaming consoles. :)

i think that it's gonna be really hard to bootleg DC n PS2 cd's coz they're not the usual format coz dvd ***...yeah, baka nga naging hit ang ps dito coz of the pirated games.

i agree that sega needs more 3rd party support. look at what it did for the ps abroad.

don't you think that maybe the ps2 selling so much was just a product of hype? i'm not saying yes, i'm not saying no. may bugs pa daw sya eh. we'll have to start judging around 6 months from now when games start pouring in. it's not so much the specs of the systems that's gonna save them but the games. sega had a superior system in the saturn but because of the games of the ps (and partly because it was easier to program for) the ps sold better.

now i heard the the DC is easier to program for...let's open this thread again 6 months later and let's see

kawawa talaga ang SEGA, wala sila sa tamang timing they always release their console too early, kaya lagi na lang nalalamangan sila sa specs, talo na naman sila sigurado sa sony sa sales whan time comes.

I got a free sega dreamcast for free from qool.com...I like it coz i can play with others on the net and it's very fast too...the only thing i don't like is that it doesn't have any dvds yet compared to ps2. But i don't think sega will lose.

I'm just gonna wait for qool.com to give ps2s for free by next month....if you want to learn more..click here http://www.qool.com/register?RefMemberName=huchiwawa

don't count sega out yet... look how well the dreamcast is doing in the states. What sega needs to do right now is to release quality dc-exclusive games. Even though the DC is inferior to the PS2, Xbox, or dolphin, i believe it can still succeed... (the genesis did well despite being less powerful than the SNES).
