I think bleaching it works, too.

have it dry cleaned. or wash it three times.

why would you buy 2nd hand clothes that you are not sure of its history.

Siguro nga sa mga namatay, then yung mga family nila eh itatapon na yung mga damit, then kukunin ng mga pinoy at dadalhin dito. :D

:glee:

Ukay junkie here. :D Some tips...

At the ukay:

1. Know the ukay's sked. Find out when they bring out new merchandise (usually on sweldo day). New items tend to be more expensive but it's when you'll find nice stuff -- when everyone hasn't had their go with the items yet.

2. Go with friends who know your style. Divide and conquer. :D Have your friends look for items you might like vice-versa. Make sure they aren't your size tho lest you end up slugging it out for an item.

3. If you have the time and the patience, go through the rack piece by piece. That's the only way to find the great buys.

4. Check your items carefully. Remember that the reason why they ended up there in first place (assuming that the previous owner is still alive) is because it might have damages. Look for holes, tears, etc. Check for stains too. Be sure you're able to tell which stains will wash out and which won't.

5. Check tags. One way to find out how much a garment has been used is if the tags are curled.

6. Haggle. Especially when buying a lot.

After buying before wearing:

1. Soak in boiling water and detergent overnight then wash as many times as you can with more soap. :D

2. Up to you if you want to use Lysol but I've refrained from doing so ever since I tried it once and the clothes smelled of Lysol afterwards. Ick!

5. Why would you wear clothes with tags & then resell it?

That's so cheap.

in all fairness to these ukay shops, maganda talaga minsan mga jackets/sweaters.
i haven't bought any yet but i can tell from my friends, who inevitably says they got it from baguio city.

mostly kasi may four seasons sa bansa nila so wen summer comes they wanna get rid of their winter clothes wen winter comes namn they wana get rid of their summer clothes..

pero ako i just buy skirts and sweaters kasi di yun direct contact sa skin diba:?:

amuyin mo muna maamoy mo naman yun eh mahirap na baka may BO yung may ari nun dati..lalo na sa armpit maamoy mo pa rin kaya ako hinihintay ko na *** yung sale pero i admit fun din sa ukay!:bounce:

clawed_out
Jul 18, 2005, 03:54 AM
ano daw yung hindi direct contact sa skin?!

nakakahilong spelling at logic ha.

i'm one ukay freak and yeah baguio is one great destination though medyo mahal na esp the ones in session road, the ones in bayanihan are way cheaper. i even got into this store which sells evrything at 3 for 100 from skirts, dresses, pants etc...scanning through each rack could be tedious it's best to know exactly what it is you want in terms of color, cloth and texture so you don't really have to look at each one. minsan mas madaling mabili kung nkahanger and nka dsplay na sya, one that catches the attention kaagad esp pag medyo tinatamad ka.

wash it several times na ***, these items have been treated/medicated **** *** you notice there's this funny, masakit sa ilong smell which is common to ukays.

the best thing about ukays are these are vintage clothes which you can't find at dept stores yet with really cheap prices. bonus pa if you get those branded and sturdy ones ;)

happy ukay!

where are the good ukay stores in the Metro Manila area?where do you people get those you mentioned?parang natetemp na ko to search through ukay stuffs.
and anyway,if you buy from malls, those clothes are also being tried on by a whole lot of different people also, esp. pag limited stock.
eeew, speaking of this, how do you try it on?(the ukay clothes)

i honestly haven't tried ukays in manila, i go to baguio also or the ones in the provinces. our ukays in iligan mostly came from the US while the ones in baguio are usually from korea and hongkong.

i try on a dress by wearing it over my clothes, just estimate na *** how well it would fit. i dnt try on the shirts, blouses and skirts na. estimate na *** ****.

great ukays in manila are found in cubao! para silang kabute na padami ng padami.. although i have 3 favorite shops where i get best buys.. best meaning d masyadong mahal pero maganda. :naughty:

1. 2 of them are located beside farmers mall - tatawid ka lang not to edsa ah, but to the right side of farmers when you are facing edsa

2. 2nd floor ng bldg beside jollibee along aurora blvd. may hansel na name dun somewhere.

parang 2months palang ako na open up sa ukay kc dati isip ko na ang ukay ay maghahalukay ka.. un pala hindi. naka hanger **** pala lahat. well so far dami ko na nabili kc dami talaga magaganda..unique buys. sobrang exciting kc ul never know *** ul find next. so far isang bad experience palang naman. nakabili ako ng blouse na nag cause sakin magka BO smell for a day! :mecry: meaning nun suot ko un blouse na un, after 5 hrs of wearing it, ****! may naaamoy nako! hahaha birahan ko ng goli and till now *** na inulit suot nun blouse na un kahit super gnda!

some of my best buys are branded. :D i had a dr martens boots for 200 bucks! i also had a versache blouse na worth 60 lang! hehehe dpa din ako nadadala noh. :bop:

hmm un mga nabibili ko naman 1x ko lang lalaban and regular laba lang no special treatment. which i guess is wrong lalo na after dat bad experience!

happy shopping!

:flower: yup , yup, yup ! kasi not like yung mga blouse na fitted as in nakadikit yung armpit nun dun mismo.. sweater they use it pero meron pa silang inner wear diba?

Went to an ukay-ukay last weekend, and I was able to buy a trench coat(kung yun nga tawag dun) na mukhang bago pa talaga, walang amoy, walang dumi, no damage whatsoever. Stretch maong yung material nya and it cost me P250 lang.

As for the bleaching tip, depende yun sa tela eh, kase not all materials pwedeng i-bleach, baka kalabasan niyan mag-mukhang dyed clothes yung mga damit nyo kase di pantay-pantay yung kulay :p basta make sure lang na lalabhan mong mabuti yung binili mo :)

95% of my clothes are ukay and i have been wearing them since i was a kid... my gosh that was still in the late 80s

aside from the fact it's cheap, i get to have a set of wardrobe na unique at alam mong wala kang katulad. i always get compliments sa mga clothes ko :D

anyway, share ko na lang kung ano ginagawa ko when i buy...

1. ukay-ukay doesn't necessarily mean na lahat ay 2nd hand o gamit na. i only buy the ones that are new (may tag pa), mga alam mong reject, the clothes that looks like it's been worn only once. no matter how cool the cut is, i don't buy it if it's already worn out, kupas, etc.

2. patience lang po. sometimes the good items are the ones in the boxes or hidden somewhere. you really have to make "hukay" :)

3. id rather shop alone para mas mabilis ako makaikot. pag may kasama kasi, matagal. nadevelop ko na rin ata yung talent na tumingin sa isang rack lang at malalaman ko na kung may okay without looking at the clothes one by one.

4. the clothes naman are treated na before makarating dito sa Pilipinas. na-disinfect na yang mga yan. i just soak the items overnight with a detergent. trust me, there's nothing to be praning about when you choose the ones that looks new pa naman. i've been wearing these clothes for more than 10 years and wala pa naman ako na experience na skin disease or something.

5. careful with the soaking coz sometimes there are clothes that fade easily or hahawa ng kulay. separate them accdg to color.

6. ask for discounts! pwede pang tawaran yan.

7. forget if the shirts reach 100 and above. mahal na yun. go to the stores that sell 80 shirts. yun naman ang presyo ng ukay talaga.

8. sa baguio, the bayanihan area ang okay kasi mura dun. stalls in session road and harrison are expensive. if you really want the cheaper ones, go to hilltop at around 5am. dun ang bagsakan ng mga ukay clothes. they go as low as 10-20pesos a shirt. yun nga lang, maghuhukay ka ;)

9. dito sa manila, di ako masyado bumibili pa. i just go to anonas. they have this bldg na 4 floors puro ukay at aircon pa yung stalls. gusto ko rin dun kasi mga taga-baguio mga nagbebenta. feeling ko im back home, hehe. pero you should go during weekends kasi that's when they make the prices low.

hope nakatulong ako. :D

i saw on Txttube recently (after midnight show ng GMA) where one of their hosts , Kathy did some challenges in the vintage ware area of Cubao, where Marikina Shoe Expo used to be. Nainggit ako sa dami ng mga vintage clothes and items. it seems like a real interesting place to go. inde *** clothes and shoes but also antique furniture, decors, toys. trip ko yung astroboy figure :D
to top it all, malapit pa sa bellinis, yung italian resto that serves authentic italian food ;)

magikot ka muna bago bumili kc it often happens to me na after i buy sumthing in one stall, i'd find it in another one with a cheaper price. well...that is kung **** mo tlagang makatipid. hehe and most importantly tumawad ka...kc *** iba, hndi na tumatawad, sayang din kahit 10 pesos puede mo pang i-spend un on other stuff.

i was so lucky to have lots of great ukay-ukay finds when i was in Baguio. was able to buy a multi-layered peasant skirt, a snakeskin skirt, some more skirts, several blouses, shoes, and a really nifty bag. tyagaan lang talaga. i tried on the clothes on top of what i was wearing to check if they fit me (kahit medyo dyahe) and haggled like crazy. :)

Alright... Here's an FR.

I went last Saturday at this 4 story bldg at Anonas. The place is okay. There is not much stuff in there. I don't if I went the wrong day but I was not able to find anything. I dont suggest going there again.

I have three favorites places:
Monumento
Pedro Gil
Galleria

Monumento --> To go there, ride lrt and get down at monumento station. Go down the mall and exit from there. Walk towards the end of the LRT. follow the path you will not cross any street. Afterwards, you will see the ukay stores:

Rating: This store has lots of stuff especially for women. Items mostly are used clothes but wearable. Price range is 80 - 110 pesos.

Pedro Gil --> To go there, get down Pedro Gil station. Walk towards Robinsons, you'll find it at the other side. They have lot's of good clothes, Its quite pricey. I found a van heusen long sleeves there for 150 pesos.

Galleria --> This one is infront of Robinson Galleria in ortigas, the clothes are pricey and there items with tags.

Not a regualr ukay shopper here but if i do, I shop at Quezon Avenue cor. EDSA, near 7/11. My routine goes like searching every rack thoroughly and then choosing clothes which are unique and funky. Usually pang gimik tops ***. I don't buy ukay clothes which can be bought in malls. Also, I go there during sales, usually a few days after the delivery. By that time kasi, it's 3 for 100 na. I don't like spending 80 and up bucks for ukay tops eh. :)

So far puro tops pa lang nabibili ko. :)

I dont suggest going there again. i agree. was there around three weeks ago and after scouring most of the shops, came home empty-handed. stuff there's not good at all. never going back there again.

Do you girls come across branded ukay ukay stuff? I tried looking for some at Baguio, but everything looked so worn out if you're patient enough, you'll find branded stuff in good condition. it also depends on which ukay you go to. the ones in baguio aren't that good although there's an ukay along session road which sorts its stuff na so that only the branded stuff which are in good condition are sold. trade off is that they jack up their prices sincei you don't have to make kalkal the racks anymore to find the branded pieces (i wanna kill myself for that conyo sentence. lol)
