I'm starting to get depressed over this.
Trying to start a diet and exercise routine is difficult. For me, before I got the motivation to diet, I pictured myself thin for many months. I guess it also helps when others say you've gained and you just want to get even by looking fit and trim when they see you again.
Here's my routine:
I used a teaspoon instead of a tablespoon when I ate AND I also used a platito instead of a plate. When I ate I would chew my food very slowly. Oh, don't starve yourself, eat six small meals during the day. Basic rule is, limit your intake that's white. White like sugar, salt, anything that's got flour in it. It's okay to eat the things you crave for but don't sit on your rear end and eat the whole bag. When I get the cravings I take out a few pieces (three to four) and nimble NOT gobble. Instead of satisfying the hunger learn to ease the cravings.
I must admit, it was hard to change my eating habits but I've learned to adapt.
THINK THIN!!! THINK HEALTHY! Good luck!

I forgot to mention, keep a food diary with you at all times. Jot down everything you put in your mouth. And I mean EVERYTHING! At the end of the day calculate how much calories you've consumed. You'll be amazed at what you've taken in.
Here's what one fitness trainer mailed me.
Boost the metabolism by eating reg.
meals throughout the day and with good calories -- less is not better -- WHAT
is more important -- and in enough for your body to finally dip into the fat.
Here's the deal -- with very little protein and carbs your body will use it
automatically as fuel -- and will NOT EVEN LOOK at the FAT for energy --
it'll just store the fat - use the good stuff. SO ~ to get your body outta
that eat a bit of each at each meal 5 -6 a day - don't ADD fat -- it'll come
with the rest.
Keep the fat at 20% - carbs at 40% protein at 40% --- it'll take about a
month for your body to realize your not going to starve it. Hungry is NOT a
good sign you need to eat -- it's too late -- your bodys into the muscle and
feeding off it already ok?
Well - that's all the lecture for now -- remember 1500 calories (I think for guys it's 2000 calories)-- start
counting the grams o.k. For each gram of protein = 4 calories - same for
carbs and fat is 1 gram to 9 calories --

I've been losing a lot of weight for the past weeks 'cause I can't seem to have an appetite. My mom thinks i might have an eating disorder. Care to enlighten me on that topic?

daggerlooks: It's a pretty far shot to say that you have an eating disorder just because you don't have an appetite. That's not a hallmark of an eating disorder. Most of the people who have eating disorders do have appetites, just that they choose not to eat. I'd suggest seeing your family doctor and having a thorough physical to see whether there is something physically wrong first before even delving with the psychological.

I went on Weight Watchers for a few months and lost an alright amount of weight. My hubby was on it the same time as me and he lost LOTS!!!! They say it's because he had way more to lose and I was closer to my ideal weight range anyway. Anyway the Weight Watchers program was basically a lifestyle modifying thing, watching what you ate, exercising, even prepping yourself mentally and the weekly meetings really helped to support you. I went to Manila for a month and just pigged out there and pretty much gained like half of what I lost hahahaha and I haven't had time to get back into the full Weigh Watchers program but I am still practicing my WW habits and have the right foods in my pantry and fridge so at least it's a start.
Too bad they don't have WW in Manila it's a really good system, no drugs, nothing is forced upon you, you go on your own pace and no mind-busting calorie counting, just a simple system for managing food in take. Also it helps ease you into exercising even if you've always been the sedentary type, a little at a time until you build up a regime. I lost about 1.75-2 lbs a week and although it doesn't sound like alot unlike those "Lose 10 lbs in 1 Week!" diet the loss was steady and pretty much consistent (pero obviously if you cheated we know the consquences, right? Hehehe).

ito, may question ako...
does xenical work?
i'm desperate to lose weight and i'm thinking of taking xenical...
please help!
Orlistat (Xenical) prevents absorption of roughly 30% of your total fat intake. It works, but it doesn't exactly promote healthy eating. If you don't establish the proper eating habits, you'll gain the weight right back as soon as you stop taking them.

I'm starting to get depressed over this.
Make it a lifestyle. :-) You don't need to go to a gym to exercise. You can do it anytime, anywhere. The more au natural, the better. :-)
How? Here are some tips:
Take the stairs as much as possible. I usually don't take the elevator; I take the stairs up to 5th floor, at most.
Walk as much as possible. If you have a car, park it far from your destination (that is, if you're not in a hurry). Here in the US, ang lalayo ng mga parking areas. In New York City, walking is as natural as eating American pie. :-) Kita mo 'yong mga nagtatrabaho sa Manhattan, lahat may baon na sneakers/walking shoes. High heels inside the office, paglabas.... ready to hit the streets na, for hours. :-) Very practical sila, eh. Tingnan mo si former JFK Jr., either he'd walk or rollerblade his way to his office. :-) Tayo, maski mangapit-bahay lang, naka tricycle or jeepney pa. lol
While queueing at the bus/jeepney station, movie theater, or wherever... do basic stretching. Screw the on-lookers. :-) Baka maconvert mo pa sila. :-)
If you're gonna stay glued to your seat for hours watching the tube, get your body working. Kung wala kang tread mill or what have you, sit on the floor and do some arm and leg stretching while watching your favorite sitcom. Take a hotbath afterward, before going to bed. Nakapag-calisthenics (p?) ka pa, napanood mo pa ang fave TV program, naka spa-like ka pa. Sigurado sarap ng tulog mo. :-)
Eat like a rabbit. :-) Beat binge-eating by munching baby carrots when hunger strikes you. Or try banana.
Baon palagi ng tubig. It fills you up, until you'ready to eat during regular meal time.
Doing regular household chores is a good work out, too. Malinis pa ang bahay n'yo, happy pa ang parents mo. See... all the good that you do for others really go back to you-- healthwise (physically and mentally/spiritually), that is.
I could go on and on, but you get my drift.
By the way, once you get your body 'moving' regularly, your body will look for it. Start small. Who knows later, you'll be motivated to do more-- like engaging in sports. Sports is the most natural and most enjoyable thing for me. I play tennis 2-3x a week. I join soccer scrimmage once in a while. Also softball, volleyball and many other ball games. And you know what-- I still eat anything I like. :-)
Good luck!

walk. yun lang mapapayo ko sa iyo.
kung ayaw mo pawisan, maglakad ka sa loob ng isang building. sa megamall, sa quad...
or, para hinde ka ma depress, be perfectly happy about yourself. there's more to a person than body weight, you know? i know it depressiong to look at one's body in front of the mirror (i get depressed all the time)
but if you learn to accept the fact that you wont be no marky mark unless you work off your butt, the depression will stop. eat right and you'll be on your way. good luck.

try herbalife...sometimes kasi it gets so frustrating na you keep on dieting and go to the gym every single day and after 2 weeks, parang halos walang diff...herbalife is like a food supplement with pills...but, the thing is, it's really safe na even pregnant women can take them...my friend took them and after a week, she lost 5 pounds na and she even cheated pa nga sometimes...she wasn't going to the gym pa that time or anything...she said na it regulates bowel movement and it's actually good for the skin pa and it can bring down your blood sugar and cholesterol...but, of course, it would be good din if you continued exercising pa rin and maintaining your diet even after taking it...if you're interested, try visiting http://www.herbalife.com...good luck! =)

..here's from someone who had been through Yoyo-diets:(. Dr. Ira, I hope you don't mind...
This is what I've learned: When you decide to loose weight, it's not a spontaneous thing. You have to be emotionally and mentally prepared. Doc Ira is correct, self-control and discipline are one of the qualities that have to be worked on.
Sadly, I don't finish what I have started. I would start to work out and eat right, then I would fall back to my regular routine. I now realize that it helps to help a 'partner' or a 'motivator' and that's what my Aunt did. Oh gosh she really deflated me back then hahahahaha!!!
It's very challenging to get up on my butt and start working out--especially during the first few days (although I feel so energetic afterwards). You know what I do? I put a benchmark: one week. Then if I was good enough to be consistent I'd make it two weeks and so on.. (but lately it only lasted 4 days). One hour of workout is not so bad. It's only one hour, heck if we could sit here and read pex post for more than that, what's an hour of work out right? (Wow I'm actually starting to motivate myself as well hehehehe). If I haven't been working out for a while, I start off slow and as the days progress, I intensify my workouts. Jogging is really really good.:) Interestingly, when I was enrolled in this aerobics class, I maybe heavier than my friends but I was more in shape than they were!! Exercise just does that, di ka agad napapagod or hinihingal:D and mas mabilis ang kilos mo. I eat a banana before working out (to replenish the sodium that we loose when we sweat) and drink lots and lots of water. I notice that I feel hungry after I work out (the first few times) that's why I also gulp down a couple of diet supplement/multivitamin so I won't feel as hungry. Doc Ira, it's the lactic acid by product in our muscles that makes us sore after the work out am I right? But proper stretching before working out can minimize the soreness, besides it's a 'feel good' kinda soreness:D
And here's what my aerobic instructor told me: Don't be discouraged if you can't find a signicant weight change. We are building muscles. Muscle and fat weighs just about the same but fat "occupies more space". So it could be that you're not loosing weight right away but you're loosing inches!!
Eating right: Well this doesn't mean that I'm gonna have to give up on my favorite foods. It's more like 'cutting the portion' or I'd resort to 'tikim tikim'. But again, I do it gradually, yokong mabigla (done that before and I suffered the consequences of having a weakened immune system--came down with pneumonia and I remember waking up and finding lots of hairs on my pillow:().
But you know what though? Loosing the weight is the easy part. Once you've reached your weight goal, MAINTAINING THAT WEIGHT IS THE CHALLENGING PART....
hmmmmm....I feel so motivated now:)
Come on get up!!!;)
