As for myself, you can find me still teaching at the AILM, and conducting the Ateneo Chamber Singers and the Philippine Chamber Choir. Next project is the Bamboo Organ Festival, with Martin's Mass for double choir, Bach's Cantata 104, Charpentier's Te Deum, and other pieces. Sana panoorin ninyo kami!

I'll be judging sa Genting Highlands International Choral Festival sa Malaysia. Any of you guys joining?

saan ka ba nag-aral at wala ka bang philosophy units... di ka ba tinuruan mag argue correctly??? as in alam mo naman siguro yung ad hominem...pero sobrang wala ka namang alam sa musika o sa pinagsusulat mo rito kaya hanggang "magpatangkad ka naman" lang kaya mong hiritin...

contradicting.... sabi mo, "para mapapanood mo ng husto ang mga concerts.".... tapos magagalit ka sa critiques/comments ko. eh bat mo ako binibigyan ng masyadong pansin kung sa palagay mo di ko naman napapanood ng maayos ang mga concerts na ito.... you follow?? right, i guess not... its not my fault, bird brain...

personally i don't find anything wrong with monteverdi's orginal message which you have been labeling as manifestation of his "pagmamarunong." i don't know monteverdi at all, but i think his comments are quite constructive even though at times they may be put bluntly, but what's the best way of telling criticisms other than that, anyway never have i heard him speak wrongly (in the political sense) of any choir.

ibongadarna, i would have to say that you are hindering the dissemination of valid opinions that philippine choirs may take to help them grow as good musical institutions and furthermore improve this beautiful choral tradition we have in our country.

Sa mga manonood ng concert ng Uste, pwede bang harangin nyo si monteverdida pag nanood ito at baka puro pagmamagaling na naman ang pairalin nito pagkatapos manood. ikaw nga ang magsulat. for a change. actually just go to the concert and watch. remember what you hear and then make a critique then have the honesty and guts to write it here. wag lang yung positive ha... madali lang sabihin yung mag "ang galing nyo," "ang lakas ng dating nyo," or "bilib ako sa inyo," im sure alam na nila yun.... tulungan mo sila be specific with your comments ok? we'll see naman kung gaano ka keen ang art appreciation senses mo....

this is a serious request from me pare. just watch and tell us all what you think. this way we'll have a real idea kung ikaw may alam at may k kang mang okray ng mang ookray...

Sarap talaga nitong may mga kagaya nitong pumapatol! Kakampi sigurado ito ni monteverdida. Anyways, talagang ganun. Ang purpose ko lang naman eh mang-asar ng mga taong kagaya ni Monteverdida. I remember one world class artist (correct me if i'm wrong but i think it was Cecile Licad), she said: I know i am good so don't tell me anymore that, tell me what was wrong with my performance and i'll work on with that.

True artists listen to criticisms more than they do to praises. While words of encouragement mean so much to good choirs, words for improvement are more important for any artist to flourish in their craft, no matter how painful they are.

The Municipal Government of Imus and the Imus Bankers Association cordially invite you to partake in the Paskuhan sa Imus Choral Festival, open to all school, church and community based choral groups. This will be on December 17, 2003, at 7PM in the Imus Covered Court.

This year’s Festival is two-fold; groups may either choose to participate in the COMPETITION, or participate in the choral presentation only.

For Groups participating in the competition:
*All groups will perform the contest piece Diwa ng Pasko AND one song of their choice, either in English or Pilipino – a copy of which shall be attached to the group’s confirmation sheet.
*The contest piece Diwa ng Pasko shall be performed a capella. Only un-pitched instruments such as tambourines, castanets and drums will be allowed.
*The group’s chosen song can be performed a capella or with keyboard or guitar accompaniment. CD and cassette tape or any other recorded accompaniment is not allowed.
*The group shall consist of 12-20 members, excluding the conductor and accompanist.
*Choreography or choralography and wearing of choir uniform or costumes are encouraged.

Hi guys! I was able to watch the performance of the dlsu chorale at philam last December 3 and I was impressed. They were few but ang ganda ng execution ng mga songs. Anim lang yata ang lalaki nila pero very effective ang sound. Ang galing, congrats!

Yes! napanood ko din silang lahat....Uste, Dlsu at abg Upsa kagabi. They were all good with different styles. Binabati ko kayong lahat.

Nasan na kaya si Monteverdida? Sang-ayon sa aking source eh nagtuturo daw pala ito ng choir sa isang Aglipayan Church sa pasay. Aba, anong oras kaya ito at ng mapanood ko. Kaya lang eh baka di ako papasukin doon dahil di ako Aglipay.

Ito ay sa San Isidro Parish Church sa may 1830 Taft Ave Pasay City malapit ito sa may la salle, papuntang buendia...

Well Again congrats sa mga nagperform sa Philam lalo na ang DLSU chorale, UPSA and UST... napanood ko lang ang UST at UPSA. Ganda nung pagkakanta nang pasko pasko medley ng UST ang galing nila... I hope may mga free concert pa rin this christmas.

Anyway may performance ang PPO with UE Chorale ata and AILM ng MISSA Tango... Grabe maganda itong work na ito I hope you watch this people...

the UST singers is good.. very good... they have proven themselves too but watching their concert through the years made me realized that they have been trying to give their audience a new taste of an old repertoire... they sang songs that have been sang by the madz before with a new twist that might be beautiful or not... they sang tinig ng lupa, gabaq-an, mamayug akun, and many many more to name a few that were premiered by the madz way back the old times...and the interpretation was completely changed...the choir of the world title was won in 1995 pa... fewer prizes were achieved after that batch which i think is the "best ust singers batch that could have bested the madz if that batch is still today's batch"

the ateneo glee club was good during the time of joel navarro but when this genius left , the sound became different and some of the members left too..sayang naman...

some of the alumni of the ACGC joined the ateneo chamber singers .. the ACS is good.. very good also ..they specialize in sacred music i think... they sound like europeans... bago lang sila and i think they need not to prove themselves in joining competitions...

the UE chorale has changed a lot... the sound, the performance... it has achieved a lot too... more power .... be ready for this choir will soon emerge as one of the philippine's competiting choirs...their good

the PNU chorale sounds different .. they have their own repertoire and has become a NAMCYA suki... they also need press releases...

the SAN BEDA college chorale might be the best all-male choir in the philippines... they have a massive sound... the sound is so rich ...

HIRAYA and the MONTSERRAT SINGERS are all-male choirs that have their own unique sound.. but unlike san beda, these two choirs haven't proved anything around the world..but in fairness, they also have a good sound...

DLSU chorale was also good before.... they have won several competitions before...dlsu chorale's female section was also good...

UPCC specialzes in choreographed numbers that only them i think can do.. but sometimes, too much choroegraphy leads to the sacrifice of the quality of sound which i think is much needed to judge a choir...

UPSA... haven't heard this group that much....but as far as i heard them last time , it was okay but the sound was so typical..

these are the choirs that i've been hearing through the years... i did not choose which choir was the best beacuse there really is NO best ...i would like to hail their conductors (Carpio, Calalang, Velasco, Delarmente, Modelo, Abeleda, Delgado, Manguiat, Aracama, De Veyra, Navarro, Africa)--> u have proven your group ...

I want to impart and share some informarions for you. Alam mo ba kung sino ang mga choirs na nakapasok sa EGP? Well, you may get some notions how they sing and how their respective conductors train their respective members. Medyo kulang ata ang alam mo. Well, maybe you're not exposed to what a European sound is. Pumunta kang abroad and ask some organizers and the people from the choral community there, they'll have at least 3 Philippine choirs who really marked their spots in the choral community. One them might not ring a bell for you but they did great during the EGP. They worked hard for it. Ingat and Be productive always.

I would just like to congratulate the UST Singers for giving us one of the best and most memorable choral concerts we have seen in our life. Crap exaggeration, it was really superb! From the seemingly very difficult repertoire, to the indiviual soloists, to the dashing and super bravura finale, the audience were still in awe as we depart from the theatre! I was seated near Ms. Julie Yap Daza, and I saw her in tears and full astonishment as the programme progresses last sunday. Now, I can only say that you're still the choir that everybody envies! I have been a choral fan since time immemorial, but I have never seen any choir to perform with such bravura! Songs were very well delivered to the listeners as we can only do so much but savour the precious moments we still have as we all watch you perform.

Congratulations Professor Fidel Calalang Jr., the genius young maestro that still maintains the consistency of your group as one of the better ones! UST Singers is the only choir I know that since I saw them few years back, their sound and excellence is still the same in contrast with the inevitable exit and change of members. For that, you'll always be my most admired and favorite choir!

Kudos to the UST Singers!

Hay nakuh! Eto ka naman bruha!!!! Ke Independent church yan o aglipay eh paraho din yon. Atsaka anong sabi mo? Sasapakin mo ako at ilalagay sa Tabernakulo? eh ano naman ngayon comment mo? that choir is a functional liturgical choir. its as if kumakanta kami ng 20th century contest piece ano? to judge it will be like stupid... cause its a service group not a performing group...

pero sige, comment mo kami. baka may matutunan ako sa iyong unique insight.

Hay nakuh!!!!!!!!! Sa wakas eh nadinig ko din ang iyong choir. Sa totoo lang, kahit functional liturgical, service group o performing man eh dapat pinapaganda ang mo ang iyong choir. Gusto na sana kitang hambalusin noon dahil naiinis ako sa ginawa mo sa mga taong iyong tinuturuan. Napaka inosente ng mga girls na handle mo sana lang ay pagsikapan mo namang pagandahin para sa inyong serbisyo.

Sabi mo bistado akong bobo pero ikaw ang "bobo" dahil wala kang alam tungkol sa choir. Hindi ko pinipintasan ang pagkanta ng mga girls mo dahil nagsisilbi sila. Pero ikaw ang may kasalanan, "Ikaw"!

Kaya mga dear Pexers, itong monteverdidang ito na napaka-unong pintasero ay kayo na ang humatol at inaanyayahan ko kayong pakinggan ang kanilang kanta sa San Isidro Church, Pasay City tuwing 7:00pm ng linggo. Kayo na sana ang humatol kung may karapatan pa ba itong mamintas sa mga choral groups dito sa pex. Please, please panoorin niyo at pakinggan.

Hay nakuh monteverdida, kahit ako'y isang bakla eh meron akong negosyo at sabi nga ni Adobong-panis eh di kagaya mo na "rumarampa".

Anyways, noong una eh nasa likod ako ng simbahan pero lumapit ako ng kaunti para lang makita kita. Hindi ka kasi makita sa malayo eh! Sabi ko naman sayo eh magsuot ka ng sapatos na mataas ang takong para nakikita ka ng tao o nakakapanood ka ng di nagliliyad pag maraming tao.

Basta't ang masasabi ko lang eh "wala kang alam tungkol sa choir" at ang alam mo lang eh mamintas. Natatandaan mo ba ang payo ko sayo? Magsuot ka na lang ng shades at doon ka sa bukana ng simbahan at tiyak na maraming magbibigay sa iyo.

well chuch choir, ang tagal-tagal ko na sa music life as conducto ng church choir pero I see to it na di naman maging way kami para magulo ang misa. The music itself is one of the main highlight sa liturgy, infact sa States and Europe eh they get musicians na may degree sa sacred music, well part doon sa powers ng mga ito ay ang choral conducting and repertoire.
Sana lang marealize niya na pagalingin niya muna ang sarili niya, wag muna ang choir niya bago siya manlait ng iba! Well magagalit yan lam mo kug bakit? Di naman daw siya nanglalait kundi nagcocomment lang, well evryone ay may right magcomment but not on his ways na siya mismo di niya magawa.
Sana yung manga taong nagcocoment eh effective conductors din hindi lang yung puro talino pero pag nagturo di magets nang myembro!

I always believe in this kasabihan, Its the conductor not the members...

From what I got from Monteverdi's post... the AJ stands for Alejandro basing it on the phrase:

"wag ka nga mag-aangas alejandro"

If this Alejandro dude is a conductor or musician, one of the more familiar Alejandro's I know is that Consolacion fella. Yes, Alejandro Consolacion. Don't know it that's PeterWarlock but it seems like it.

If that is true, those words by Monteverdi were pretty strong. Such a shame that accusations and allegations such as these could arise. If they are true, shame shame.

Just wanted to share with you the news na nanalo ang Novo Concertante sa 21st Century International Choral Festival held at Genting Highlands, Malaysia. Matindi ang labanan, magaling ang Victoria Junior College at ang National University of Singapore. Sobra sa pagkalinis kumanta. But my fellow judges voted Novo Concertante the winner for the Grand Prize, as well as first prize for the folksong category.

I'm really proud of you, Arwin, and the Novo Concertante. I'm also happy that I was there when you won. Mabuhay kayo!

And yes, I read this thread everyday. Hmmmm....

What a turn of events it has been over the weekend. Quite interesting.

I hope the revelation that has been presented will serve as a lesson to all that even friends can cause a lot of hurt towards each and everyone of us. That people who we think are sincere would actually stab us in the back. That people whom we trust can be totally distrustful. May these people have a blessed Christmas and that their New Year be filled with repentance.

In my personal view, all the people in the choral community .....conductors, assistant conductors, choir members, has every right to get extremely mad with this Alejandro Consolacion! He has "fooled" so many of them. He's a HYPOCRITE and a USER who exalt himself at other's expense.

To my good friends, be careful with this guy. HE'S LIKE A DEVIL DRESSED IN WHITE ROBE and will lure you with fine words and praises.

To all of the conductors and choir members I wish you the best in the years to come. To you AJ, not even repentance can bring back the trust you once had sa mga taong naplastic mo. unfortunately dinagdagan nya pa ang paninira niya. ironically, he did this one week after he apologised to me....anong klase yun???? napaka plastic...napaka OROCAN!

Hay nakuh Monteverdi, sa palagay mo kaya eh may mukha pang magtanggol ang ipokritong iyan? Aba, sobra naman ang KAPAL NG MUKHA niyan pag nagsulat pa dito sa pex. At sa palagay mo ba may tao pang magtitiwala at maniniwala dito. Siguro mga UNGGOY na lang pwedeng magtiwala dito!!!

oh i forgot to add, peter warlock is not gay...you should see his girlfriend na maganda. saw her in one of our concerts. ang alam ko nga kursunada ito ni monteverdi dati at muntik niya niligawan...kaso ayaw sa kanya nung girl...maybe that's one of the reasons why monteversi is so insecure of peeter warlock

If this is true indeed, the girl should think a thousand times whether to continue with it or end up the relationship as early as possible. Any news sa ating mga choirs? I wonder what's in store for the choral scene this coming year. Sana mas maraming new choirs ang umusbong and may the more established choirs in our country continue to flourish and hone their music. Excited na ko for the year 2004!:)

Basta kami ni Monteverdi eh bati na dahil nalaman kong hindi naman pala siya likas na musikero at hobby lang niya ito at nagsisilbi pa siya sa simbahan. By the way, pasensiya na mga amiga at wala akong time pumunta sa simbahang kinakantahan ng Hipocritong Baklang ito at may dumating akong mga bisita. Pero wag kayong mag-alala at makikilatis ko din ang sinasabing mongoloid na ito. Pag nakita ko ang hitsura nito eh at least makikilala ko ito pag nanood ako ng konsiyerto na nadun siya. Pag nakita ko siya sa kahit anong konsiyerto ay paligid lang ng singit niya ang walang kurot.

Aba Monteverdi, magtanggol ka! Mabuti pang isiwalat mo na ang kabuuan ng pagkatao nito dahil magkaibigan pala kayo dati at siguradong nagsasabihan kayo ng mga lihim.

Itayo mo ang iyong bandera Monteverdi at marami kaming nasa likuran mo.

Basta hinyayin na lang ninyo at sasabihin ko sa pex pag nakita ko na sa personal ang Alejandrong ito.

Well, I do believe that the real issue is hypocricy and whether bakla or hindi si AJ is immaterial. Kasi wala namang diperensiya kung sino ang bakla o hindi eh. Si Ibongadarna nga (no offense) eh inaamin nyang bakla siya so anong diperensya. What we're talking about here is the sincerity and itegrity of the person involve like Alejandro Consolacion.

Kung ako ang tatanungin ninyo, okey lang kung bakla siya pero ang hindi okey eh yong pagiging hipokrito niya na sinasabi ni monteverdi at ang mga choir na plinastic ng taong ito. Iyon para sa akin ang siyang masama sa taong ito.

Sometimes we cant blame a person for what he has become. We have yet to trace back the kind of environment where he grew up. The kind of parents that he has and most especially the up bringing. Dito minsan nagkakatalo sa nagiging pagkatao ng isang tao.

3. Hindi ko ako nagalit sa kanya because of he posted my schedule. I was just surprised, syempre alam ko ookrayin ako ni Ibongadarana (at that time dahil kami ang may away). Ang di ko maintindihan bakit si AJ, na aking kaibigan, ang gumawa nun. I warned him and talked to him about why he did it. inubos ko pa load ko. Nag sorry siya....tapos after one week nagsulat siya again, this time he said something na magaling lang ako manlait ng choir. He didnt mention siya rin ganun....na sobrang manglait ng choir....

...Oo pareho kaming kritiko ng choir...pero at least I strive not to be plastic with people who dislike me...I dont smile at them to make friends...

...if ever, try picking apart my particular comment and see if its valid or not...kung mali ako, eh di mali. pero at least walang personalan...its just what i think about your choir/performance... i dont use words for personal agendas... kahit mga kaibigan ko ang nasa choir na ito...eh kung flat sila...may magagawa ba tayo dun?

kung criticism lang sa choir ko ay sobra since 1999 puno kami niyan. mula sa ibang choir sa simbahan, sa mga pari, sa mga parishioners, sa mga AP at CWL, sa mga dating kaibigan tulad ni AJ, kahit mga magulang ko...they all have words for what we do...

...but one thing lang, we took it in stride and we're now better than what we were 5 years back...because of CRITICISM...

to be fair..balanced naman...may mga good words din na siyang nakakataba ng puso. ang importante ay ang attitude towards criticism. We always try to see if its CRITICISM or pure INSULT. eh if its the latter, we just ignore it...

bat mo nasabing di pwedeng pintasan ang choir ko? ah oo nga, hindi mo ko kilala...hehehe...

The issue is Hypocricy and that's what PeterWarlock aka Alejandro Consolacion is. That shouldn't be tolerated at all kung naiintindihan mo ang issue.

We speak of hypocrisy as if we have never been a hypocrite at any point in our lives. I'm not saying that hypocrisy should be tolerated but I believe that it's not something that warrants all the brouhaha that we're now giving to this alejandro dude. Maybe the kaplastican that monteverdi is accusing peter warlock of is merely an exchange of opinion and insight between friends after a concert, which we all do. Ikaw ba naman kung hindi mo kaclose ang choir na kumanta sa concert bibigyan mo na sila ng blow by blow commentary about their performance? I think not.

When we congratulate a choir after a performance even if we did not think the performance was outstanding, is that considered hypocrisy or simply a show of courtesy?

When we choose the words that we use in givng our criticisms on a choir's performance so as to be constructive and not to offend, is that hypocrisy? I don't think so.

The truth of the matter is that we are all guilty of what monteverdi is accusing peter warlock of. In one way or another, we edit our statements for the sake of not being rude to others. If that is being hypocritical, then I guess it's all right to be one.

I think yung kaplastican at pagiging ipokrito na sinasabi ni monteverding gawain ni peter warlock is not really that. I think it's simply the open exchange of opinion between "friends". kaya lang siyempre pinasama ni monteverdi ang dating.Siyempre galit siya kay peter warlock e...his words were those of an angry and bitter man.

to everyone, pwede let's move on to the next topic. tama na itong diskusyon about this monteverdi vs peter warlock. nakakasawa na. pinapasikat lang natin itong dalawang ito. binibigyan natin sila ng publicity which they don't really deserve

To you PeterWarlock, I would suggest, if you may allow me na never ka munang magpakita sa kahit anong concerts at maraming mainit sayo ngayon. Stay cool ka muna for about mga six months because you can never tell. Masyadong mainit sayo ngayon ang mga tao. Piece of advice lang ito and for your own safety. I hope you don't mind.

Please don't get me wrong. I'm just giving PeterWarlock a warning and it is up to him to follow it or not. There's nothing wrong with it di ba. Wag kang magagalit ha, kilala kita kung papano ka mang-asar pero di tayo talo at di tayo magka-away.

Pare-pareho tayong galit sa hipokrito pero wag naman sanang umabot sa magkasakitan na physically. I'm going to the concert now at sakaling makita natin siya doon eh hayaan na lang natin. Dito na lang sa pex nyo siya birahin pero di na tama ang salitang bugbugan pa.

i just watched the Madrigal Singer's Anniversary concert, and what else can i say but "BRAVO!!!". It was nostalgic to see Prof. Veneracion and the old members of the Madz sing again. walang kakupas-kupas ang magic. And the new batch!What an improvement. Ang kapal na ng sound niyo. Maganda. Congratulations to all of you.

Yes, Yes! It was a good performance. I was one of those seated infront and it was nice to see OA once again. Dun sa nagtanong sa akin kagabi kung nakita ko daw ba si alejandro consolacion dun kagabi eh sorry at nasa harapan ako. Kung nandun man siya, he might be hiding probably somewhere at the back at nagmamadaling umalis when it was almost over.

iba na pala ang topic dito. i thought it was still kung SINO ANG PINAKAMAGALING NA UNIVERSITY CHORALE? i never thought i'd say this, but i understand why monteverdi is in war mode here... with what ive read sa thread, he's not the only one using the thread for his personal reasons because i saw sa earlier part ng thread that Peter Warlock also used the thread to SEVERELY criticize one member of the DLSU Choral Group - and i dont think his criticism came with any hint of being constructive.

anyway, ex-seminarian, curious lang ako who you are because i know most of the girls from the DLSU Chorale 99 batch and i know their boyfriends also. this would mean that we would be acquaintances if not friends.

and if someone should be accused of trying to court all the girls in the chorale, i dont think jay should be taking all the "credit" because it is alejandro who has done more courting... si cris, raymin, reynabel, etc.

I dont think AJ is the victim here.

I had to be away and I must admit it was sort of "not me" when I joined in this thread, I was justgetting' "in" even if I'm indeed voizlez, I must admit, I'm in a corporate world and was never a musician simply because I don't have the voice.. my life partner na lang ang talagang kamundo ninyo, but of course she just sings and would love chikas from me but is not really into this, trip ko lang ****... pero I have promised her that I will not divulge more information with regard to her choir ( tho' i've admitted that she with the world's finest...UP***************) anyway, Just can't help but laugh about the comment on AJ that he is not gay, naman!.. please.. whoever you are, concern ka lang siguro, my comment is not based on my gf's but my personal pang huhusga, HE'S indeed GAY.. lahat naman yata ng guys me posibilidad eh, sige sama ninyo na ako.

for 50 pages this has been, for the most part, a really intelligent and insighful discussion on our choirs. ive done my best to give my fair share of honest critiques to the choirs ive heard during the past four years...

ive made a lot of friends na talagang maraming naituro sa akin at sa aking hobby/hilig/passion which is choral music. syempre may nakaaway din kasi not everyone can agree to one thing...

but thru it all...those of us who who have been together since page 1 (ako pala page 4)...have constantly read these pages for one thing: FILIPINO CHOIRS...

im sorry because sa away namin ni peterwarlock nasira ito.... i hope this would end na. maraming nakikisakay sa away. sa totoo lang...gaya nga ng nabanggit ko... things are already set in motion that would hopefully patch-up these deep set wounds....

forgive me for all this. forgive everyone who has used these board as a venue for personal differences and agendas. lets move on....

what more appropriate time than at the brink of a new year diba... :)

Alam mo, yung mga friends ko sa iba't ibang choirs ay naguusap na at nagplaplano kung papaano ka ipapahiya o kung papaanong pagganti ang gagawin sayo na mga pagkakataon na makikita ka sa mga choral events, kaya humanda ka, seryoso ito. Hintayin mo na din na isang araw may sasampal sa iyo na conductor o may magtataray sayo na mga miyembro hanggang sa ikaw ay mapahiya ng sobra!

Sukdulan na ito Jay - kilala ka na ng lahat ng tao! Napakakapal ng mukha mo at napaka laki na ng ulo mo EH WALA KA NAMANG MAPAPAGMALAKI kahit isa. Yung choir mo boses P**E ang tunog! Sana'y bang kumanta ang mga miyembro mo o sanay ka ba talagang magturo?

the discussion at hand is actually very subjective. as most people would say that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", judging who the BEST UNIVERSITY CHOIR IS really depends on the listener/audience.

I used to watch University Choirs back when i was in college but due to my demanding work schedule, I couldnt watch anymore. However, with my short University Chorale experience, I got to see that most of these choirs were really good.

For someone without music background, I wouldnt say that my opinion really mattered but since were given the freedom to express our thoughts here, I would.

The Philippine Madrigal Singers are really good. I got to watch them one time in CCP. I think this was way back. Im not quite sure if they still have that Soprano named Jane but I think shes really good. They make sure that they dont just sing the song but also express every emotion in the song. Im not so sure about what the others say that the singing is actually "madumi" because for most of the people watching their concerts (non-music people), their singing serves as an inspiration.

I didnt get to watch the UST Singers that often. I think the time that I watched them was when they had a singing contest and they performed a few songs. They are really good. Their choir is very powerful and their conductor/pianist did really well in training them. I like one tenor specifically who had this brilliant voice. Im not sure about his name - weng i think. He was very good.

For the Ateneo College Glee Club (I hope i got the name right), I think their Sopranos were their major asset. There was one time i got to watch and one soprano really stood out (not in a bad sense). Her voice was very sweet yet powerful. She sang "et misericordia" and i think another lullaby.

For the La Salle Choir, I got to watch one concert in CCP where they only sang 4 or 5 songs. For people without professional voice traning, I would say that they are really good. I also like their light songs - very entertaining. They are also pleasing to the eye since they dont have that much body movement when they sing and they never fail to smile. I think their pianist at this time was that Alehandro guy. He's good. However, i think the choir should instruct him not to move his head & body so much while he's playing because it gets so distracting for those who are watching.

I also got to watch the UP Singing Ambassadors. All the while, i though that they were they same as te UP Madrigals but I think the Madrigals dropped the UP name and stuck to "Philippine". This group is very good. I also got to watch one performance in CCP and they had i think half the choir onstage and half off the stage. They were singing a song that i think required two choirs.

I didnt get the chance to see other University Choirs but with what I've read in this thread, seeing that the life of University Choirs are anything but dull, i think ill take some time off to watch them. I think choir music is very relaxing and entertaining. :)

Guys, nabalitaan n'yo ba yung HIMIG NG KORO choral competition just last December? I think 2nd year na nila ng pag-stage ng contest and the prizes, so I've heard, were very big. I mean P100,000 for the first prize. Grabe 'no?

Anyway, I got the chance to watch it at the AFP Theater last December, and it was very entertaining and revealing. Mostly, mga lesser known choirs ang sumali, with the exception of Arezzo winner UE CHORALE!

Yes folks! Sumali sila (to think na nanalo na sila sa mga international choral competitions) and narrowly won over the 2nd prize winner Kammerchor Manila (church choir ata from EDSA Shrine). Third place is Bangkal Chorale, na ngayon ko lang narinig.

UE sang an ethnic war song and an upbeat Christmas ditty na masang-masa ang dating. Although I liked their ethnic song, I think that the best Christmas song sung during the contest was the Filipino "Gloria" song of Kammerchor Manila. Revelation itong group na 'to because for a church choir, they sounded VERY good! Too bad, sila lang ang choir na walang choreo sa contest, or else, they might have had a chance for a first place finish. San Beda Chorale, last year's grand prize, sang a pop song during an intermission.

Any info on Kammerchor, pexers? It's nice to realize that choral excellence is never anymore an exclusive trait of the more established university choirs. This means SUPER TALENTED PALA TAYONG MGA PINOY!

With this small piece of good news, I wish everyone a happy, peaceful, loving (especially to the more aggressive pexers we've come to know in our previous thread...) and musical new year to ALL!

Kammerchor Manila is made up daw of some UST Singers alumni and friends (im not sure)...this lang according to someone I know. Last year sila ang champion sa Christmas Choral Competition sa Filinvest Festival Mall, where they also sang Manoling Francisco's Gloria (originally from Bukas Palad). Impressive talaga ang performance nila, eto galing from one of the judges ng competition, who also happens to be a prominent university choir conductor. I hope to see Kammerchor soon kasi marami ngang nagsasabi magaling sila.

Nanood din ang byuti ko and you were right. Kammerchor is good (with some rough edges na pwede pang hasain, like the girls' sections, hehihe...). Type ko ang "Gloria" nila, pero my dear Montiverdi, i think kay Mr. Norman Agatep ata yung version na kinanta ng KM. Pero, agree ako sa yo na impressive nga sila for a church choir. Nag-tour daw ang mga hitad sa Europe last year.

Speaking of church choirs, nasaan ang the other good church choir which is Chorus Paulinus, na nag 2nd place sa isang wedding song choral contest last year din? i think...miss ko na sila...

yes, ateneo chamber singers is an offshoot of the acgc touring batch of 2000 and 2001 (yung nag egp). nagsitandaan na kasi yung mga tao kaya di na bagay sa college hehe. it is housed under the ateneo alumni affairs office, while the acgc, obviously, under the office of student affairs ng loyola schools of the ateneo, for more info about the two choirs visit www.ateneochambersingers.com and www.ateneogleeclub.com

for PCC naman si choirmaster ang makakapag describe dito accurately kasi siya and founder nito. they are known to perform mostly music of the 20th century.

Speaking of free concerts, it's time again for the Annual AILM Choral Conductors' Workshop, at alam niyo naman na every night ay nagpeperform ang ating mga paboritong choral groups!

Last night, we had the pleasure of listening to PNU Chorale and Mandaluyong Children's Chorus. Ang galing nila pareho! PNU is a revelation to me, after not hearing it for so many years, sa totoo lang. And the MCC are improving with every performance that they do. Ang galing na ng mga bata!

Tonight (Tuesday) we will have the UE Chorale. Wednesday night is Madz, Thursday naman ang San Beda College Chorale ni Robert at Imusicapella ni Tristan. Friday night is Manila Chamber Singers ni Joel Aquino. Concerts are open to the public, sa St. Andrew's Chapel sa tabi ng AILM, at 7pm. Ang saya!

It's was really nice to hear the madz again and gumanda yung tunog nila from the last time i heard them. I really love their rendition of the songs and after a long while contrasts ulit ang pinaririnig nila sa audience (RE: high and low notes). Galeng!

Very entertaining yung female chorus for their version of Papa ka ba ni DJ Alvaro! Sobrang galing sa pakwela, sana yung male section may bago ring pakulo kasi luma na yung sa "Ilalim ng pung saging" ba yun?

Ganda rin ng Daemon Irrepit Callidus, basing sa mga mp3s na narinig ko ng various choirs na kumanta na nun. =)

Eniweis, hope they continue their good job and may they soar to greater heights once more! GO MADZ, YOU TRULY ARE THE BEST!!!:)

i need to mention din *** 'Gamelan' by R. Murray Schafer- a Canadian composer (?) but of course special mention *** world premiere ng 'CORDERO DE DIOS' by Jerry Dadap, Jr.- intense *** piece as i sensed it, though medyo passive *** pakikinig ko 'coz i arrived late. Commendable din *** girl beside Mr Carpio for her solo in 'Summertime'; and yes Ms Olynne brought the house down with her slick moves in 'Papa ka ba'.

There were obvious slips in intonation on some parts but overall, they have really, really improved compared to the last time i heard them late last year in St Scholastica's.

hehehe, aabsent ako sa work to catch their farewell concert.

Mga kaibigan, nagustuhan niyo ba ang mga concerts sa AILM? Ipagdasal natin na sana masustentuhan ito by being held on a regular basis, during the choral conductors' workshop every year. Pero magiging successful lang ito kung pupunta kayo at manonood, hindi lang sa Madz kundi pati na rin sa mga ibang choirs na nagpeperform gabi-gabi. We had a very good audience size this year. Please support the AILM Choral Conductors Workshop every year by sending delegates to the workshops and watching the concerts every night during the workshop week.

Tapos, during the workshop, many people have suggested for a choral summit, as in, isang pagkalaki-laking meeting, para maayos na ulit ang ating organisasyon at nang makahita naman tayo ng datung sa mga kinauukulan. It's high time we are united ekk!

For those interested, the San Beda College Chorale will have a farewell concert on JUNE 13, Sunday from 4:00PM to be held at the Abbey of our Lady of Montserratt, San Beda College, Mendiola Manila. This is in preparation to the Daegu International Choir Festival to be held in Daegu, South Korea.

Repertoire will include new arrangements of its conductor, Robert Delgado (actually most songs are either transcribed or arranged for TTBB)

Tickets are P150 (P100 for students and choir members) and can be bought at the gate of San Beda before concert starts.

The amiable all-male Bedan voices

After various invitational and festival performances and coming from every competition as the victor, San Beda College Chorale is poised to further live up to their image and reputation as the Philippines' recognized all-male school-based choral group.

Thirty-nine years after it was incepted by Right Reverend Fr. Abbot Bernardo Ma. Lopez, OSB, in 1965, the San Beda College Chorale ceaselessly commits to strengthen the cultural development of the students through exposure to music from the classics to the modern. The resident choir of the school's College of Arts and Sciences, which is considered as a socio-cultural organization, also gives its students various opportunities to participate in choral competitions within and outside the college.

Today, it has achieved its status as one of the best and multi-awarded young male choirs of the country.

In 2000, the group embarked on its first ever European and North American Tour, where they participated in various goodwill concerts, festivals and competitions. They participated in the 2nd International Choir Festival in Sopron, Hungary; 2000 Choir Olympics in Linz, Austria and the 5 Lyra Music and Dance Olympics in Budapest, Hungary. They also staged concerts in Germany, Italy, Vatican City, France, Monaco, USA and Canada.

In 2002, the group bagged the Olympic Gold Champion in the Young Male Category of the year’s Choir Olympics held in Busan, Korea, under the direction of noted arranger/conductor/trainer Robert Delgado. They went on to win first places in the National Music Competition for the Young Artists (NAMCYA) and the 1st Himig ng Koro Competition.

In May to July 2003, the SBCC have successfully embarked on its 2003 European Tour. In this tour, the group battled it out in various choral competitions, participated in numerous festivals and again, provided goodwill concerts to Filipino communities with a repertory of songs that was surely enjoyed by both Filipinos and foreigners.

The group has likewise participated in the 6th International Chortage Festival Bad Ischl, Austria where it won two Gold Diplomas in the Folklore and Free Program Category; represented the Philippines in the Levanto International Choral Festival in Levanto, Italy and performed concerts in major key cities in Germany, France, Austria, Norway and Italy.

In September, the group participated in the 2003 Philippine International Choral Festival, together with the best foreign and local choirs held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines and various churches in Laguna. It also took part in the 2003 NAMCYA Festival held also at the CCP and various towns in Bulacan.

After receiving all the aforementioned nods from some prestigious national and international competitions, the chorale will be participating in the upcoming 2004 Daegu International Choir Festival in Daegu, South Korea this June 15 to 22, 2004.

The participation of the Philippines in this festival will forge inter-cultural relationship with Korea and will affirm the high level of choral standards and culture that the country has obtained.

The Philippines is known internationally for its excellence in music; especially in choir singing. Among the vast lists of outstanding choirs in the country, the San Beda College Chorale has been chosen to represent the country in the said festival.

“This makes the San Beda College Chorale to be the first male choir to perform in Korea,” says Delgado.

The forthcoming festival in Daegu promotes freedom from international barriers through choir singing. “It will also be an event where countries can share and understand other unique and rich cultures,” informs Delgado. China, Taiwan, Cuba, Netherlands, Yugoslavia and the United States will participate on this momentous event. The San Beda College was invited to represent our country.

The Chorale has been preparing for this occasion by rehearsing almost every night to be able to get the hearts of other countries. “There have been a lot of negative and depressing current events that is happening to the Philippines and this is one way for us Filipinos to win the good perception of other countries,” Delgado relates. “Amidst all the problems in the Philippines at the current time, this will be a good reason for the Philippines to still smile and feel good about ourselves,” he continues.
In line with its preparation, the chorale is going to have their farewell concert on June 13 at the Abbey of Our Lady of Monserrat in San Beda College, Mendiola, Manila at 4 pm. Tickets will be sold at P150.

Come September up to May 2005, the San Beda College Chorale once again embark on its European World Tour, covering cities such as Germany, Austria, France, Italy, Spain, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Great Britain, Belgium, Netherlands and the Czech Republic. They will also visit Mediterranean countries such as Malta and Greece.

The Ateneo de Manila College Glee Club just came home from a 2-month long U.S. Tour spanning 7 states. It was very well-received and acclaimed. They will have their U.S. Tour Homecoming Concert on 27 June 2004 Ateneo Grade School Chapel 7PM. Admission is Free! They will perform the rep they performed in the States, which includes sacred songs, spirituals, folksongs, broadway, south american, etc. See you all guys there! Pax!

Niways, my sbc choir just arrived from Korea and will be leaving again sometime in august. We plan to go to the states sometime in July - september 2005. My ex-president will go ahead of time (this Augsut2004) to organize the itinerary and other necessary requirements. I hope he could be in touched with you and other impressarios, concert organizers, san beda alumni assoc. so that he could arrange the tour effectively.

On the other hand, the Madz alumni are rehearsing for a performance this August. Check out the singers: LuchieR, AnnieN, TutisM, JennyI, PatS, PazV, RonnieJ, MonetS, jhong, JojoV, moi, EmmanM and RonZ. And it's really refreshing to sing again after 10 years.

After 7 years of hibernation (since winning the European Grand Prize in Tours, France 1997), Madz pioneers its way to the TOP once more as being the first Philippine choir to participate in the Habaneras competition in Torrevieja, SPAIN. And to win FIRST in both categories POLIFONIA and HABANERAS totalling 19,000 Euros (almost $23,000) Correct me if I am wrong. This is also the first victory of its new choirmaster, Mark Carpio in the international choral competition scene. So may this serve as an inspiration in the coming years..as now there will be a mecca of Philippine Choirs trying to duplicate the feat and success of the Madz once more. MABUHAY MADZ and MARK C. Praise God for He has always been our stronghold in every concert and in every competition!!! :) We thank Him for Mark and we thank Him for Maam OA, Alfred and Peachie who went to torrevieja to help and support us. We would also like to thank all our friends who prayed for us.I would also like to share to you the inspiration that the filipino community in Valencia gave us. The program starts at 11 and ends at 2am and its a 2 hour drive from Valencia to Torrevieja but the said community went to see us the day before we competed,the day of the competition, the awards night and the prix de public night. They dint just drive there but they also prepared adobo for us, merienda, and melon juice. People from the Orfeon University Choir of Valencia also went to see and support us. Sorry, If I seem to be too serious or what but I guess I just wanna share to you what support could really do,especially when it comes from the ¨MOST IMPORTANT KINAUUKULANS!!!¨:) Share ko lang tong fave prayer ko by someone in the group: It was YOU who made joshua fit for the battle of jericho,It was you who Delivered Daniel and It was you gave victory to David against Goliath So we must not doubt that It will be YOU who will deliver us to win in this competition...its not verbatim but gusto ko lang ishare kasi im not sure if he writes here or not. La lang! Emote lang coz were all very happy and very thankful and I think I should also share that to you!!!!! The whole Torrevieja thingie lasted 8 days. Competion proper alone took 6 days. Four choirs performed each night, each doing 1 required habanera, 2 habaneras of their choice, and 2 "polyphonic" pieces of their choice - in other words, kahit ano. Day seven was the awarding ceremony, and the last day was the Gala concert for the Public Prize.

Observations in Torrevieja: The Latvian choir (representative of Tolosa for the Grand Prix this year) was technically the most impressive of them all. They were a bunch of teenagers who were perhaps the most technically precise: secure balance, accute intonation. Same thing could also be said of the Lithuanian choir. However, one could sense that the Eastern European choirs were out of their element with the habaneras, while in their choice polyphony pieces, both were at their scariest.

But surprisingly, the choir that literally give me the most sleepless, anxiety-filled nights before the awarding ceremonies was the Entrevoces, the 16-member Cuban group. They had both a good grasp of the technical aspect, as well as the "puso" factor which I had hoped only the Madz could do. Of all the choirs I watched who did "A tu lado," they were the one who actually tugged at my heart with their intrepretion, even if they took a few rythmic liberties for the sake of agogics. In the Gala concert, they gave an equally impressive showing. I loved their "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," with their soprano soaring up to a sucure high C (i think), as well as their Cuban piece, this time with their soprano going up to a high D (that I'm sure because I checked with a tuning fork). Truly a choir to look out for in future competitions!

I'd like to add my own personal thanks as well: Thank you Ma'am OA for being there with us. It has always been a pleasure for me whenever we those informative talks, as I learn a lot from your reminiscing and recollections of the past: ang di maruning tumingin sa pinanggalinga, di makakariting sa paroroonan. Truly, you are the undisputed doyenne of Philippine choral music - may your tribe increase!

Mark, your patience and persistence with the group has reaped it's divedends beyond our wildest expectations. Your wisdom has guided and molded us, both as choristers and as human beings as well. Without any hesitation, I proudly say it has been an honor and pleasure to sing under you. Here's to more years of making music together!

To my closest friends, both in the Madz and outside, thanks for keeping me sane these past 2 1/2 months. I wouldn't have survived without you guys. And to the rest of the gang, thanks for all the music-making we have made. Despite of all the (mostly)ups and (occasional) downs, I could say it was a wonderful tour, full of learning, both in music and in life-lessons, too. As Jane said, it is just the beginning - and I say, let it rock!

And to the Good Lord above, whom I know keeps watch over me - my cup runneth over. ´Nuff said!

Please join us in congratulating our very own DLSU Chorale who won the grand prize in the Folkloric Category of the Bela Bartok 21st International Choir Competition in Hungary last July 27-Aug 1, 2004. They bested 10 participating choirs from all over the world. They sung Katakataka, a traditional love song, Idemdem Mallida, an ethnic planting song, and Mr. Delarmente's famous and undefeated Dumbele, a rain chant from the Itneg people. They were awarded a diploma for this feat. Thank you very much for your prayers.

I watched the concert yesterday! first time to watch 'em live! ayos talaga! nakakaaliw yung sinabayan nila yung video nung entrance nila during the competition

nabasa ko dun sa program na may 5-year ban that was imposed on Madz to join international competitions because it is a requirement for any European Grand Prix grand prize winner? as in bawal talaga kahit anong compet other than the grand prix?

congrats to Madz on their first international competition after the hiatus, and also their first victory. Congrats to Mark Carpio! panalo agad on his first competition

^^ tama bang may 5-year baN? Im not sure, ang alam ko pag di ka sumipot sa EGP ganun (correct me if I'm wrong).. And how can you compete sa EGP without getting the grandrize in at least one of the 6 competitions...

Anyways, congrats to the MADZ!!! Watched your concert kagabi :) Galing galing ... especially yung WATERNIGHT!! WOW talaga... Next sa list ko after that yung Ave Maria.. Ofcourse, very amused pa rin ako sa "PAPA" song, kahit ilang beses ko na siyang napanood that you sang it...

It was nice for Mark (first-name basis na ba kami hahah) to actually include other Philippine choirs, in general, in his speech... to make a better world

e_coli... pareho tayo ng ranking sa songs.

Ang laki ng ginanda ng Water Night nila. I think when the sop 1s would hit the high notes na straight tone lang, it made the chord more solid and mas ma-impact. Ganda! Ang intense pa ng tira nila. I was closing my eyes the entire time and just enjoyed it. :D

Yung Ave Maria naman gusto ko talaga siya eversince. I've heard the same batch sing it better than last night (Sunday) pero maganda pa rin yung Sunday. Siguro ngarag na sila from tour. Generally I thought the entire concert was pretty good. I liked the effect din nung pag enter nila na in-synch with the video.

Nagustuhan ko yung third na habanera nila. Ang astig ng dating. At infur ang Gamelan, palinis ng palinis. :) Sana kantahin na rin nila yung Arvo Part na Magnificat! :) Excited na ako.

ang grand concert (ay...wedding pala) ni anna abeleda ay sa sept. 11 na! maloka kayo sa repertoire...narinig ko, bongga daw ang ka2nugan ng mga choirs!!! syempre ksma daw and madz at u.e. at ang mga choirs na iba na tinu2ruan ni ms. a! conductor si master jojo v.!

PLEASE, can you have a repeat performance of your acclaimed CCP homecoming concert? I'm sure marami pa ang gustong makarinig ng winning sound nyo. Kahit sa Abelardo Hall lang ng UP College of Music, ok na kami. PAKIUSAP PO! :*)

The Ateneo Chamber Singers, led by world acclaimed conductor, juror, and clinician, Jonathan Velasco will be having their 3rd major performance for the year on October 2, Saturday, 630 PM, at the Church of the Gesú, in the Ateneo de Manila University campus. The concert entitled "Pagsamba" will feature Philippine premiere performances of several works from all over the world. A short discussion will be given by the choirmaster regarding the social, historical, cultural and other related background of the works at the start of the program. For a short glimpse of what will be in store for that night, here is the repertoire:

isa pa..may chismis na ang ust singers ay hindi na daw 22loy sa tolosa? ganu ka 22o itez? anyway, wait na ako sa homecoming nila!!!

homecoming din ng ue chorale, manila chamber singers, mandaluyong children's chorus, mary the queen, san beda...etc. ? kelan?
