I saw the University of the Assumption President's Choir of San Fernando, Pampanga perform yesterday at paco park presents. they're not that good. hindi sila magblend at may problema ang mga soprano nila. ayaw kumabit ng mga boses nila. hindi ko lang alam kung dahil yon sa sound system.

I agree...talagang maraming blend problems....was talking with another prominent conductor over the phone while we were listening to their set....it seems MADZ trained/influenced yung conductor....they gleaned their entire repertoire from the madrigal singers....

pupunta ba sila sa choir olympics? hmmm...gud luk!

may balita isa daw sa madz nag tnt sa states....i hope its not true...masisira choirs natin sa us embassy niyan!

maraming salamat....

I will attached the performance of gloria 1 and 2 tomorrow.

Galingan niyo!!!

Salamat

ah, wag mong take personally yung comment ni peter warlock. actually may point naman sya kasi narinig ko yung md recording nung performances ng ayc...maganda naman at bilib ako generally lalo na sa intonation ng group na isang linggo lang nagkasama at nag rehearse. ang galing din kc mahusay ang mga conductors nila at naadapt nila yung tone nila sa requirement ng mga piyesang kinanta nila (e.g. tunog "russian" at makapal ang quality nila when they sang stravinsky's ave maria.)....may sabit talaga yung mga soloista sila pa nga nagsabi nun mismo sa akin eh.... wala tayong magagawa dun breaks of life yun eh....

he's part of a college choir...as official arranger and accompanist. what impression are you talking about? the guy cant sleep dahil ang dami niyang commission from the japanese and korean choirmasters/conductors na bumilib sa works niya when he sang with this year's ayc. actually kinanta nga yung composition niya dun...

This discussion incourage people na sabihin ang kanilang honest opinion.

Im no longer singing with any chorale group due of im enjoying doing other musical related career.

Well.... about the land of the rising sun, ganda ng impression nila sa akin, marami ngang nag eemail hanggang ngayon, commisioning me to do another chorale works.

By the way kasama ka ba namin sa Festival, bka ikaw yung soloista o kasama sa trio sorry ha!
Nagsasabi lang ako ng totoo, PALPAK!!!

Helllow there!

Napanoon ko sila last week and i really agree with your criticism

:) To anyone from the Madz, sino nga pala yung kasama niyong choir dun sa show... PCC, San Miguel or iba pang group? :)

Ahahahahaha!!!!

pero at least...just mind what he wants to convey...i guess with a little bit of effort, makukuha mo naman kung ano ang gusto niyang sabihin eh :D

O ayan peter warlock....sabi ko sayo edit mong mabuti yung sinusulat mo....

*PETER WARLOCK - (1894-1930) British composer. Born to a wealthy family in Wales. Although his family is into stock brokerage and art collecting, he decided to go into composition. He favored brooding, very depressing themes...he even took upon himself to write a book about another "dark" composer, the renassaince madrigalist Gesualdo. He eventually died of Gas poisoning...his death still a cause of mystery...siya ba ay namatay of nagpakamatay???

Kakatawa ka ha.... saang history of music book mo yan nabasa?
Galing nung soloista pang west side story.

Uy by the way peter warlock actually di niya totoong pangalan yun. he is know as Philip heseltine a music critic sa isang periodico sa london aroung 1920.

Peter Warlock famous composition is the Andante from the Capriol Suite.

I have always been diplomatic here and I really don't want to change that. See you all guys when things are better.

johnvianney... salamat sa pagbati. I got your greetings from our common friend. I hope you are doing well kung nasan ka man.

johnnybbad... whatcha up to? haven't seen you here much. busy i guess.

choirmaster... miss ko na ang mga posts niyo. pero alam ko naman kung bakit hindi na rin kayo nagpopost. i remember your statements from before. and also baka busy na busy kayo. more power sa lahat. :)

sa iba... keri lang lahat... wala naman magagawa ang mga tao dito kasi nga "speak you mind" ang ina-advocate ng pex. sana enjoy pa rin tayong lahat kahit na kakaiba or the usual ang mga nangyayari. :)

Bocelli: Oks naman. We've been (very!) busy since we arrived, so ngayon lang ako nakakapag-settle down ng kaunti. Madz homecomming is sometime first weekend of October - as for exactly when and where - I'll post as soon as we get the details.

Did anybody watch the concert of the choirs leaving for the Choir Olympics at the CCP last Saturday? Any comments, flaming or otherwise?

Yes...I may be one of the first to get this CD and I would say that
this is a Collector's Item especially for those who are fans of
American Contemporary Acappella. Our very own III OF A KIND, being Bay Area's Finalist has 2 cuts, ANAK and MAN in the Mirror, and the unique AUTRI (ala-Real Group) from New York, mostly singing their Russian Folk Tunes, and of course the National Champion, PERFECT GENTLEMEN Barbershop Quartet from Los Angeles..Baka pwede na rin kayong maka-order. Look up www.casa.org.

Alam mo naman, ako na lang yata ang nalalabing fan ng Saring Himig dito sa Pilipinas - and for that matter, ako na lang yata ang nakakaalala dito kung sino ang Saring Himig! :p May kaibigan akong pupunta dyan, at meron akong ipapadala for you - sana magustuhan mo :) O sya, yun lang muna in the meantime.

to anybody who watched the san mig concert, can u pls make a detailed account of what you've heard? thanks!

and to MONTEVERDI's call for a new forum, i really feel its about time that Filipino choral conductors, conducting students and choral music afficionados have a more 'USEFUL' space here in pinoyexchange owing to the fact that there are some of them (like me) who just resort to reading these pages and not keen on posting anything that might 'stir-up' the wrath of those who might not like it.

im not a conductor nor a singer of any of the aforementioned groups and i should say that philippine choral music DOES NOT revolve in their worlds...

medyo late na yata to ah! pero as far as i know the GC wont be performing sa PEN, i read sa newspaper na isang alumni choir ng lasalle ang kinuha ng PEN and the Ateneo Boys Choir!

may performance ang GC sa jan4, sa araneta! you should hear them! gumaganda na ang tunog nila! considering na malou hermo has only been handling the GC for about 3months! galing sobra! talented talaga ng mga ateneans!

Hi PolO...

Thanks for the information about the Glee Club. I did catch the show at the Pen. So that's a new group that performed. They sounded quite good. If they are indeed new, I think they will go a long way in the choir scene. It's always nice to hear fresh talents. I read from an article that they are alumni of a La Salle choir and that they also competed in Europe. I did notice that their choice of songs could be greatly improved. I do like their sound though. Refreshing. It's quite different from the other choirs I have heard here in the Philippines. Or even the one's I heard in the U.S. I wish they could capitalize on it just so they could find their group's niche. I can't wait to hear the Glee Club again. It's been too long. I'm glad you said that they are sounding better and better now. :) I hope to hear more of the other groups. I did notice that the Madrigal Singers have slightly changed their sound, it's very new to me. I like it. I wish choirs here would follow suit. It's good to know that the scene is evolving. :) I forgot the name of the group that performed at the Pen but I wish them all the luck and will try to support their group, as well as the GC, the Madrigal Singers and the rest. Keep me posted. :)

Hello Pexans! A certain government office in Quezon City is in search for a new conductor to handle their choir.

Interesting statement. Aren't there straight male conductors or musicians in the Philippines? From what I remember, the conductor of the La Salle Choir from Manila is straight, I believe even his assistant (the guy who does accompaniment for the group). So I believe it's false to assume that every conductor or musician in Manila, or the P.I. is gay (male or female).

A flowers grows"
"When you believe that somewhere in the darkest night,

Just saw the programme for the Brahms competition in Wernigrode, Germany. The group IMUSICAPELLA is the only Philippine choir joining. Based on the the programme, their repertoire looks ok. Hope they do well.

Hello Mareng Sylveria,

I guess your right! Look at what hapened to those choirs who participated in a competition in Europe recently. None of them even landed in the first place. Kung UST yon eh baka pakyaw na lahat ng first place in all categories. Kaya ang mga ibang choirs diyan eh pwede bang slow down muna kayo sa kayabangan:mad: Mag-aral muna kayong lahat kumanta.

yes...for this particular song (When You Believe theme song ng animated feature na Prince of Egypt), the arrangement should be suited for the UST Singers...

...but im not saying DLSU Chorale cant do justice to it...maganda naman yung pagkanta nila (especially nung marami pa male section nila)... besides, it was arranged with them in mind.

here's something for you to think
no offense to the UST Singers pero most of them are voice majors or students of the conservatory of music pero other choirs barely have one in their list of members pero nananalo sila sa competitions abroad now don't you think that's more admirable...

siguro with this one i must agree
understand the song and it will understand you. in return the song will touch the audience

I attended mass last sunday at bf homes and what a coincidence, guest choir noon sa 5 pm mass and dlsu chorale. At say mo ha, gusto ko ang kanilang style at blending even if they are few.

Well, maybe it has something to do with Nota's personal hygiene. Hi Everybody,

I'm not actually new in this thread. Pinalitan ko lang ang pangalan ko into "Loneranger" because my kabayo is here pala.......si "sylveria"!!!

One thing I noticed in this tread now is the very glaring fact that it became so cheap and irresponsible because of some "ill mannered" members who shouldn't be here at all. I don't want to mention their names anymore coz its already very obvious.

They are fantastic and worth our admirations.

After manalo after 3 years or 2 years balik ulit hanap na naman ng contest, maganda siya pero i think, hindi lang naman chorale competition ang buhay ng choir, I think filipino choirs now also have a right to venture as a concert choir performing and focusing on research works range from early reneissance and baroque toward contemporary period, commisioning new works to the filipino composer, my point is its time for us na to venture into another stage, to be proffesional choirs...

Siyanga pala peter warlock, kilala kita! He,he,he,he!!!

if i take it from your post, yun lang pala ang purpose ng choir na ito... to seek validation from a jury of international judges???? or baka ikaw lang...may insecurities ka??? are you speaking for the group or for yourself? baka pagalitan ka ni Fidel niyan at parang kulang sa reflection ang sinabi mo...

other countries with rich choral traditions have choirs, professional choirs, dedicated to research and preservation of performing styles. sadly in the philippines, SMMC lang ang ganun, at broad pa ang repertoire nila. in britain for instance, choirs specialize in specific areas like the tallis scholars
(renaissance), gabrielli consort (early baroque), monteverdi choir (baroque to 19th century), etc.

yun lang naman sinasabi ni peter warlock. its time for us to find new areas to concentrate...at di lang puro competition...

i didnt like your choir because it won the choir of the world or tours or gorizia or whatever...i like it because of all the things that makes it great...and not because of how many trophies it has amassed in its collection...

mukha kang trophy at competition siguro

siguro you have to read the post once again.
such aggressiveness will lead to things na hindi mo magugustuhan.

"Bata't kami sa USTE ay sasali ng sasali hanggang makuha naming lahat ng panalo sa mga competition."
hindi ka kaya pagalitan ni Sir Fidel sa sinasabi mo?
nakakahiya ka.
malungkot ang buhay mo siguro
yun lang ba ang aim mo?
ang manalo sa lahat ng competitions?
how pathetic.
as ambassadors of good will, i hope someone would agree, choirs are here to provide entertainment and inspiration to people. their aim is to touch people's lives and make them realize that even in this troublesome world we can still be happy and enjoy lots of simple things in life through songs syempre.
heheheh

Hello! Sorry ngayon lang ako nakapagbukas, well ang masasabi ko lang I dont have any names of chorale group na tinutukoy, Im talking to all chorale groups here in Pex, but please dont make me wrong di ako nangangaral, ang masasabi ko lang bago ako magsalita eh alam ko ang sinasabi ko!

With High Respect to the Madrigal Singers kaya sila nakilala not only on their competition but because of the choir legacy at syempere ang nagawa ni Mrs. Veneracion sa chorale scene dito sa pilipinas, I dont need to talk about that kasi I think alam na nating lahat yun, kayo UST I also admire your conductor, In fact I really love your arrangements and rendition of contemporary works...

Yung Pater Noster ni Sir. Fiel naniniwala ako legacy niyo na yan ng buong grupo, that is one of the most effective filipino motet ever written...

I guess some of our friends were in Arezzo, and the ff. were relayed to me..Wala pa kc nag-pu-publish..But maybe I could share at ***** medyo Debussy pa sila doon so here goes. Paki correct na lang kung may inaccuracy :
2003 GRAN PREMIO "Citta di Arezzo" - Ars Cantica Choir from Milan
1st Mixed Choir of Polyphony : Ars Cantica
2nd Mixed Choir - UE Chorale
3rd - Kodaly Iskola Aurin Leanykara, Hungary
4th - Imusicapella
5th - Landarbaso Abesbatza, Spain
6th - UPCC

Folklore Category - UPCC
Special Category (Contemporary) - UE Chorale

So it looks like the 3 Philippine Choirs made a victorious slam at this year's Arezzo's competition. Congratulations, and you have all made us proud again !!!

Congratulations to all the choirs who joined the Arezzo Competitions. Sige. More power and sana other potential filipino choirs will try again.

i agree with MJFPL. it's very easy kasi to say na member ako ng ganitong choir dito sa pex, whereas hindi naman. any member of pex can just easily use another name for whatever purpose. choirs are very vulnerable sa ganitong set up, particularly the UST Singers.

beware of impostors here s pex... you're choir maybe the next victim.

Hi to all... it's been a while.

I just couldn't wait to post after watching the Madz concert last Saturday. What can I say... it was one of the best experiences I've ever had watching the Madz. Sincere yun. Nakakatuwa talaga yung matangkad nilang alto... sobra niyang cool! :) I'm also impressed by the repertoire... tinodo nila yung Ave Maria Lauridsen... ang kapal nung tunog.. parang 40 *** members.... perfect! Nakakatuwa ring marinig ulit yung Ihin ng Hangin after 5 years. Sobrang ganda...

CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN!!!

RE International Choral Festival.

My review as an ordinary avid choir-fan.

The Choirs from Austria and Korea were so good. Opening and Closing concerts were awesome, nitely concerts were as fabulous and great.

Our local choirs were as talented and as good as that of their foreign counterparts. Personally, I love AILM Choir and Sen Beda Choir.

I was never a fan of UST Singers before, but after the event at CCP, I just realized that they really deserve a sincere and pure recognition and a special citation being one of the best choir our country has. I have seen all the concerts from the opening til the closing. I think this choir had the best repertoire.

At first, i was really bias towards this UST group (since I have my bet and my old-time favorite-group who's also a participant of the festival). I thought they're just hyped-up and too overrated, but when I attended their concert (the first that i have seen), they're just different. The sound, boldness, volume, they have it all.

And the closing concert when they sang the 'storm song', its just perfect. A level higher than any other choral group.

I admit now, im your fan.

its been a while since i posted. nonsense na kasi till you posted--hi boccelli! ;) yup! ust singers sang cloudburst on the closing night. impressive! sayang you werent able to see the live performance. im sure ccp would have a recording. The festival closed with a blast! di na nagsara ang curtain...with the audience and with the drums playing (ati-atihan), the choirs from the stage marched to the lobby. saya!!! congratulations to all participating choirs from the philippines :) after 5 years ulit...2008 na...nyarks! sana makasali pa..hehe. ciao! p.s. welcome home u.e. chorale! were proud of you!

Cool. I have the BYU Singers version of Cloudburst kasi. I really love that piece. Although it has Whitacre's typical clashy notes... it also has a Schaffer flare, almost "Miniwanka"-ish. Thunder galore towards the end. I'm guessing UST used their metal sheets to simulate the thunder sounds at the end of the song. :) Congratulations to all the choirs. :)

Congrats to UEC, Imusicapella, and UPCC for making the country proud in international competitions this year.

Just wanna share a little piece of good news myself about another choir who also made its international debut in Europe.
(I think the increasing number and the variety of Filipino choirs performing abroad shows just how dynamic and alive the choral community in our country really is).

Kammerchor Manila, one of the resident choirs of the EDSA Shrine, just arrived this week from its first European tour covering six countries in one month.

They did not enter any competition but joined the Voices of the World choral festival in Vienna where they sang at the gardens of the Schonbrunn Palace. They also held church concerts around Europe to the delight of its audiences and for the benefit of the UP-PGH Children's Ward. The choir is currently under the baton of Mr. Joven Valeras, an alumnus of the UST Singers and a graduate of the UST Conservatory of Music.

It was a humble goal they accomplished compared to the admirable conquests of more experienced choirs, but I think they also deserve our congratulations, pexers.

Congrats Kammerchor Manila for sharing your music to the world in your own small way. :)

Sorry to say.. I dunno why?!? MIND YOU PEOPLE: MABILIS at DOBLE ANG BALIK NG "KARMA", KUNG MINSAN NGA, HIGIT PA SA DOBLE... Whether GOOD or BAD, BABALIK AT BABALIK YAN SA INYO... Hello?!?!?! GOOD LUCK NA LANG SA MGA SUCCEEDING COMPETITIONS, PERRFORMANCES AND SINGING ENGAGEMENTS NA SASALIHAN NYONYO!!!Have a nice day!!! Ciao!!!

Congrats Kammerchor Manila. It's about time that we also appreciate the endeavors of up-and-coming choirs that focus also on service. Keep up the good work!

What time do you sing at EDSA Shrine?

Ive heard them sing during their farewell concert. Truly they are one of the best choirs our country should be proud of. It is commendable also that they are not affiliated to whatever college choirs that have sprouted nowadays. Also it is good to hear that their concert proceeds goes to a charitable cause.

Keep up the good work!!!

This thread certainly raised a lot of tensions between respective choirs. Though it is not definite whether or not these "careless contributors" come from these choirs, they obviously just want to exacerbate this preposterous hulabaloo of exchange of sharp words. Should we condone this? Its only here in the Philippines were there is an environment like this. I didnt witness the recently concluded festival but i know for sure it will again be an avenue of ridicule, lambast, of ceaseless and useless opinions. Let this thread be a uniting force for choral aficionados. After all in the end, we as Filipinos are more than proud of their achievements.

To all the Filipino Choirs, Keep up the good work!!!

My sentiments exactly. I was also there during their farewell concert and for a parish choir of their calibre, it was surprising indeed that they sounded like a university choir! In these times when competition among Philippine choirs becomes stiffer everyday, Kammerchor Manila offers us a refreshing change, an opportunity for us to go beyond all this bickering among choirs and search deep within ourselves if we are using our musical artistry for the good of others especially for the benefit of our less privileged brethren.

I believe Kammerchor Manila's time has come. If we are to effect change in our social set-up, why don't all choirs include more charitable efforts in their crusade, like what Kammerchor is doing? And maybe instead of dividing us, choral music can now serve as means for us to unite our voices and make a really big difference in a society in need of care.

Kammerchor Manila has shared its voice with the world. Let's form a greater chorus to echo their call to seek a greater purpose for choral music.

Over talaga sila. :p

Congratulations to all the choirs from the Philippines who did so well in their international endeavors. I am also proud of the Filipino choirs who took part in the International Choral Fest held a few weeks back. I heard it was a rousing success.

I had an opportunity to catch a concert over the weekend by the La Salle Choir in Manila. I was amazed at the sound. I wasn't sure of their numbers but all I know is that they weren't much compared to other choirs all over the Philippines. Suffice it to say that no matter how few the members were, their sound was just amazing. I know that there are a few trade offs to having a small group but that's acceptable. I never really went for volume anyway. A friend of mine would always educate me on how to appreciate choral groups and their performances.

There were songs that I really liked. Two folk songs that were arranged by the conductor himself (if I'm not mistaken). They were interesting arrangements. Sounded almost madrigal-like. Also, I can't say how much astounded I am with the group in their interpretation of madrigal songs. Precision at it's finest. Really something to emulate. I hope other choirs take note of how this group executes madrigal music. If I'm not mistaken (from all the choral lessons I have received from my friend), patterns of sounds with in this type of music is the soul of each piece. I believe the conductor really made a great effort in achieving this.

Although there was a particular song that the group had troubles with, I'm guessing it was something about the notes that they were supposed to sing the song in, it did not dampen my appreciation for their performance. Their encore was something else too. I'm just a bit curious since I've heard that song before and something was a tad different, not so sure if it was the choir or the accompaniment. Is it really supposed to be sung/played in that manner (what I mean is, did the group/pianist stick with the original arrangement?)

Anyways, again, congratulations to the choir from La Salle. Valiant effort. Very much impressed. Don't you worry, I'm capable of dropping your group's name to very important people especially when I fly back to the U.S. You'll hopefully hear from me... soon.

By the way, I was also able to see the dlsu chorale's concert last friday and I would definitely say that the group's sound was fantastic kahit na kakaunti lang sila. Their madrigals were beautifully executed with precision. I was also amazed with the group's rendition of mendelssohn's Den Er at yong Kyrie Eleison na sapalagay ko napaka simple lang na kanta pero ang ganda ng execution. Congrats!

Bakit walang Ryan Cayabyab na song kagabi dun sa concert ni Lea (kagabi ko lang napanood kasi I caught the television presentation of the concert)?? Totoo ba ang squabble na nabalitaan ko between Mr. C and Ms. Lea?

choirmaster
Sep 29, 2003, 11:56 AM
Inatras ni Mr. C ang LAHAT ng kanta niya from Lea's concert, on the first night! Nadinig niya sa General Rehearsal recording ang mocking laughter coming from the orchestra (MPO) immediately after Lea announced his name to introduce his music. Gerard S had to take out about 2 medleys and several other songs, plus the beginning of the overture, which began with "Kay ganda ng ating musika"! It turned out na after saying his name out loud over the mike, Lea, off-mike, turned to Benjie B, concertmaster ng MPO, and said, "O Benjie, best friend mo!" At which point the whole orchestra laughed. BIIIG MISTAKE. Mr C immediately texted Bobby Jacinto (director) and asked him to pull out immediately (as in the concert will be on in a few hours!) all Cayabyab songs. Balita ko nga nag-umpisa daw sila ng halos 1 1/2 hours late the first night.

Before I go ahead with my post, I would like for people to know that the reason I'm reacting to the previous "post-er" is because I understood the text in his or her's post.
====================================

And she doesnt like you either.

>>> And I'm presuming you're one of her pr staff or ms. salonga herself to actually put words in her mouth.

In the first place, does she know you?

>>> I believe Ms. Salonga can't know anyone... so Boccelli can be likely someone who she doesn't know. Given that she doesn't know Boccelli, should his opinions even matter to some like Ms. Salonga?

Who are you IN THE BUSINESS anyway?

>>> We can't be sure who Boccelli is in "The Biz" but we must never think that some one is so miniscule that they can't affect someone like Ms. Salonga. For all we know, Boccelli is someone who's into technology and can hack Ms. Salonga's files, and delete everything. Let's not act with superiority over those who buy records and watch concerts. You might be shocked if one day you'd find out that Boccelli is actually someone IN "The Biz".

Feeling!

>>> This statement doesn't come across to me. What does "Feeling!" mean? Anyway... Hope you get Boccelli's point. I don't know much Filipino but it seems to me that Boccelli might have said harsh words towards Ms. Salonga. Do you even think Ms. Salonga would bother to comment on those statements? I don't think so. And in case you think Boccelli isn't in "The Biz", I'd like you to know that some else is... *hint*!

uhhmm.... choirs are incomparable..they excel in their own repertoire..they have their own audience and they have their own unique sound...i will not pick the best choir because there is none...these choirs that i will mention has proven something and are best in their own style...these are THE filipino choirs..

the MADZ being the most acclaimed in the world for 40 years has proven much ... madz has become a part of the filipino culture and kahit anong sabihin nila, madz has always touched its own audience..from ringing fortissimos to pianissimos that are so reliefing and exciting.... the madz has created the philippines a brand of choral singing that up to now, is the model of filipino choral music. .. they won the european gran in 1997 prix that the ust singers tried to get but unfortunately lost...

the UST singers is good.. very good... they have proven themselves too but watching their concert through the years made me realized that they have been trying to give their audience a new taste of an old repertoire... they sang songs that have been sang by the madz before with a new twist that might be beautiful or not... they sang tinig ng lupa, gabaq-an, mamayug akun, and many many more to name a few that were premiered by the madz way back the old times...and the interpretation was completely changed...the choir of the world title was won in 1995 pa... fewer prizes were achieved after that batch which i think is the "best ust singers batch that could have bested the madz if that batch is still today's batch"

the ateneo glee club was good during the time of joel navarro but when this genius left , the sound became different and some of the members left too..sayang naman...

some of the alumni of the ACGC joined the ateneo chamber singers .. the ACS is good.. very good also ..they specialize in sacred music i think... they sound like europeans... bago lang sila and i think they need not to prove themselves in joining competitions...

the UE chorale has changed a lot... the sound, the performance... it has achieved a lot too... more power .... be ready for this choir will soon emerge as one of the philippine's competiting choirs...their good

the PNU chorale sounds different .. they have their own repertoire and has become a NAMCYA suki... they also need press releases...

the SAN BEDA college chorale might be the best all-male choir in the philippines... they have a massive sound... the sound is so rich ...

HIRAYA and the MONTSERRAT SINGERS are all-male choirs that have their own unique sound.. but unlike san beda, these two choirs haven't proved anything around the world..but in fairness, they also have a good sound...

DLSU chorale was also good before.... they have won several competitions before...dlsu chorale's female section was also good...

UPCC specialzes in choreographed numbers that only them i think can do.. but sometimes, too much choroegraphy leads to the sacrifice of the quality of sound which i think is much needed to judge a choir...

UPSA... haven't heard this group that much....but as far as i heard them last time , it was okay but the sound was so typical..

these are the choirs that i've been hearing through the years... i did not choose which choir was the best beacuse there really is NO best ...i would like to hail their conductors (Carpio, Calalang, Velasco, Delarmente, Modelo, Abeleda, Delgado, Manguiat, Aracama, De Veyra, Navarro, Africa)--> u have proven your group ...

This was indeed a very commendable impressions and analysis! Whoever you are, may God bless and reward you for being a peace maker in this tread by neutralizing some tensions, a product of harse comments and rotten ideas inflicted by unworthy persons who's only purpose was to destroy chorale groups. Thanks a lot!!!!!!!!!

i'd have to say that this is a very lovely, and quite extensive analysis of the choral milieu in the philippines. It is also very concise and honest. Kudos!!! :)

speaking of ACGC, the choir has been dormant in the choral scene for almost three years. Now, we can witness its rebirth with fresh new voices lead by their new and very able conductor, Ma. Lourdes Hermo. Please watch the glee club's comeback concert this friday (hehe plug ulit, ang kulit ko talaga).

speaking of ACS naman, they will be having a US concert tour from Oct 25 to Nov. 23. may mini send-off performance sila this tue 730 PM sa Ateneo High School Chapel.

Not saying that Sir Fidel's interpretation is not good... in fact, he has a very creative mind and alam natin na magaling talaga.

Pero pag kunyari yung work ni Sir Boy Delarmente (especially his folkloric pieces), iba pa rin pag yung choir niya yung kumakanta kasi he really strives to get the sound he wants for the arrangements.

So relative talaga yung kagalingan ng isang choir. It's all in the creativity, mastery of piece, and pure talent ng conductor... not the group itself. :)

I would just like to post some of the most memorable songs I have heard the different choirs from the Philippines sing:

Ateneo Glee Club
> Musicians Go Wrestle Everywhere
> Ted Em
> Sanctus (Cayabyab)

UST Singers
> Duerme Negrito
> O Vos Omnes
> Ikaw Lamang (with Marcia)
> Waway
> Denn Herr hat Seinen Engel Befohlen
> Miniwanka

DLSU Chorale -- sensya na
> Pater Noster - Cmizscky
> the back-to-back version of Dumbele and Ilay Gandangan
> Psalmus
> Singet Dem Herrn Ein Neus Lied
> Fire, Fire (Morley)
> Che Se tu seil chor Mio

Madz
> Che Se tu seil chor Mio ('89 batch)
> Gloria (Cayabyab with Edward Granadosin singing the solo)
> Pokpok Alimpakopok (89 Batch)

The undeniable edge that top Filipino Choirs have over the other choirs from all over the world would be style.

The mere fact that we evoke emotion from singing pieces just totally captivate judges.
Expression and intensity is another factor to consider.

But lately, I have been noticing the emergence of choirs from the other parts of southeast asia like from Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia. They too have been making waves abroad. I kinda feel that they probably have been observing us and get good pointers from us and end up using them come competition time! Oh well, I guess its ok.

What our mission should be now that these other choirs have gained on us is to keep on improving our craft.

I would love to see these songs sung by the following choirs:

UST Singers
> probably same as above
> Contre Qui Rose and La Rose Complete
> When David Heard

DLSU Chorale
> O Vos Omnes
> Duerme Negrito
> When David Heard
> other less common Lauridsen pieces

are you sure that your observation is also everyone's observation?

I love the UST singers, marami silang kinakanta na sila pa lang ang nakagagawa ng pinakamaganda at hindi pa magawa-gawa ng ibang choirs na kasing ganda ng pagkakagawa nila. but at the same time may mga kanta that the UST singers have interpreted pero hindi kasing ganda nang pagkakainterpret ng ibang choirs. I like UST singers' rendition of vituosic pieces, I can't remember them all, maraming marami. but honestly i don't like ust singers' rendition of early music especially madrigals ( i find their treatment too heavy for rennaissance and medieval music). there are some songs naman na napaka intimate kaya lang nawawala yung intimacy niya dahil masiyadong mabigat din gaya ng live recording nila ng magnum mysterium sa 2000 double CD nila. but the bottomline is, observations are based on the observer's taste and aesthetic sense. we must understand that our observations may not be the observation of others. I think each choir has their own song na natatangi ang interpretation.

labo ko no, bagong gising kasi

good day to all

i respect your opinion but i just don't think it is fair to generalize, i don't know how your encounter with some of the ACS members were, but i think it is impossible for all people to have the same personality and attitude even if they're together in any group. i also think that it is impossible for a person to encounter each and every member of a group personally long enough to make such a conclusion.

Hey monteverdi! It sounded as if you're a good and reliable critic. You praised one choir but at the same time belittled others. Are you a choir conductor or a mere "AMOYONG" in the choral scene here in the philippines?

I agree with Ibongadarna! what facts do you know about choral pieces that gave you the nerve and dared to say that most of the choirs ignored details?

Monteverdi

belittle?

please, i've heard this song performed by a korean choir and it sounded WRONG!!!! kasi naman korean nga sila diba? malay ba nila sa bisaya na accent. o ngayon, did i "belittle" this choir??? sinabi ko lang di nila alam yung kinanta nila...get a brain!

loneranger,

yep i know this piece. because of the madz (one of their competition pieces during the 97 choral olympics), this work was fairly performed by foreign choirs. poorly performed i might add.

yes i know iba-iba ang accent ng bisaya. i have roots in negros and in ilo-ilo. so i know what is bisaya accent and what is tagalog accent. scan your choral cd collection for filipino choirs performing this piece and check them if they sound tagalog or bisaya... ;-)

if you really mean properly performed by MANY choirs...how come I've heard only one choir perform the work completely...including the middle portion ("II?").....that should be ACGC.....(sa cantonigros ba?)

bakit Gabaq-an I and III? saan ang II? if y'all really know...you'l have an idea what im talking about. otherwise...please...

sige nga...lets talk about knowledge. what do you know? hirap kasi simple lang post ko ginagawan ng issue eh...

Monteverdi,

Hinga ng malalim, count to 10, then exhale. Now, slowly inhale and exhale. hehehe...

I remember you watching ACGC perform the whole Gabaq-an sa St. Andrew's Chapel sa AILM... nope that was for the competition sa Tolosa, Spain.

Some of the guests and jury remember the performance of UE Chorale sa Arezzo, at hanga sila. By the way, representative of Tolosa to the Grand Prix in Gorizia next year is Balsis Choir from Lithuania (or was that Latvia? I always interchange the two countries!) They won the Folklore. Hans Christoph Rademann's Dresdner Kammerchor won sa Polyphony. Ensemble Juri (all female) from Japan won both first prizes sa vocal ensemble (musica sacra y profana).

As for Gabaq-an, I think everybody knows naman na it's in Visayan. The tempos that I'm using now are the original tempos na ginawa ng Madz batch 81 and below... at kumakanta pa noon si Ruben Federizon with them. Interesting enough, yung napanood mong performance, the choralography was also the original one used by Madz batch 81. Gabaq-an as you know it now is not the original Gabaq-an that Ruben composed. I still have the original score ng Gabaq-an na may instrumental parts. The instrumentation of the present Gabaq-an is also done to accommodate (tama ba spelling nun?) the "karga-bility" on tour - so bamboo clapper (hindi bungkaka) at T'boli bells ang ginamit. As for the Visayan ekk ekk, kailangan ng konting pagbobola, dahil yung sulat ni Ruben, kung minsan hindi akma yung accent ng music sa accent ng letra. "Intawun" as a Visayan word has an accent on the second syllable, samantalang sa pagkasulat niya, bumabagsak sa first syllable yung accent.

Sa palagay ko (at sa palagay ko lang!) shino-shortcut ng aking mga conductor-colleagues ito nowadays kasi mas interesting (mas maingay?) ang parts one and three... dio mio, ang hirap ding i-memorize ang part two, through composed kasi ito, walang pattern! Pero ang ganda ng effect, parang random na hindi, tapos those short ejaculations from the men (hindi ejaculations, kundi ejaculations... hehehe...) ng Balaud, Batasan, guisumpa(q) sa tampalasan... Oo nga pala, the q at the end of Gaba(q) is not pronounced, it is Ruben's written instruction for a glottal stop, true to the right pronounciation of the word. Gui-gaba(q)-an means to be cursed. My father hails from Dipolog, so I can speak the language a little. Gamay ra...

Yon lang.

Ang mga recordings na umiikot ng Tapiola Children's Choir is under Erkki Pohjola as conductor. He's now retired, parang si OA. But he was there in Tolosa as guest. Barkada kaming pito na judges, and they're so friendly and very outgoing! Of course, with the matching interchange ng mga e-mail...
