AlPharazon
Mar 8, 2002, 06:25 PM
driven by wonder
they came from yonder
high hopes and gladdened hearts
wecoming ears and expectant eyes
settling down to hear the heavenly sounds.
the first group came
led by a colourful man
concerned more on bowing
instead of their singing
belaboured was their sound
harmony was hard-found
but impressive was their courage
in facing this challenge
so they found admiration
from al-pharazon.
the hall was now filled
by a group so much big
but the sound that they had
lack what was characterized
by the titles they gathered
in sorties from afar
they sang with all furor
hitting more and more
until the lines much-coveted
gone hidden and disappeared
for their power has overthrown
music we should have known
and the limelight they sought
eluded them in twisted knot.
hearing a song on crucifixion
excited al-pharazon
but it ended in dismay
when the pitch had gone astray
though their sound was whole
their singing lacked the soul
and such was the sad tale
of the group from far vale.
a group entered and sang
pure and clear was their sound
but their music was in question
by the likes of al-pharazon
for who would wish to understand
the sacrilege of religious strand
and mocking tribute to a band.
they sat in semi-circle
with sound that has inspired
many a listener in the olden days
their singing was pure
their music was sure
but one would sometimes wonder
why some voices seem to wander
in a plane a little higher
or simply in a space astray
but al-pharazon has always held
this benevolent groups in high esteem.
after all that was heard
after all that was said
al-pharazon concedes
that it was indeed
a beautiful night unabridged.
al-pharazon salutes you
and wish you well in what you do
for you have taught with your heart
what your kindred can still chart!
and al-pharazon shall lie in slumber
in the abyss of his realm
and awaken again
to hear your music from the heavens . . .

The Ateneo Chamber Singers will make their semi-debut performance Tuesday, April 2, at 7 p.m. The repertoire consists of the following pieces:
Ezekiel Saw de Wheel - W. Dawson
Schaffe in mir, Gott - J. Brahms
Denn er hat seinen Engeln - F.B. Medelssohn
The Lord is My Shepherd - J. Navarro
Libera me - L. Bardos
O vos omnes - P. Casals
Pretty heavy stuff, if you ask me!
The Philippine Madrigal Singers will also perform in the same AILM concert series on Saturday, April 6, also at 7 pm. The repertoire is as follows:
O magnum mysterium - J. Busto
O sacrum convivium - V. Myskinis
Daemon irrepit callidus - G. Orban
O nata lux - M. Lauridsen
Waternight - E. Whitacre
Hear My Prayer - M. Hogan
Joshua Fit de Battle of Jericho - arr. S. Barnett
Paru-parong Bukid - arr. R. Estrada
Kuai lo de chu huei - (can't read the Chinese writing!:D )
Soran Bushi - arr. A. Miyoshi
Clementine - arr. Sved Saaby
Hasta la Eternidad - arr. A. Abeleda
Summertime - arr. R. Williams
Circle of Life - arr. A. Abeleda
Let's support FILIPINO CHOIRS by watching these concerts! :)
P.S. I heard the Montserrat Male Choir (did I get the name right?) did a splendid job in the concert series last night. Buzz is that they have a truly impressive sound and excellent intonation. Kudos too to the Madaluyong Children's Chorus, which doesn't shirk from advocating 20th century pieces even if they're just, well, kids! I hope there would be more concert series like these in Manila :)
Short heres and theres:
a) I got to listen to bits and pieces of the SMMC's cd set of Ryan Cayabyab's works. I swear ya gotta hear Grace Nono in the Credo section of Misa 2000 <------ absolutely MIND-BLOWING!!! I also loved the Anima Christi, very vintage Cayabyab in my opinion. The Te Deum is also a must hear! More details to follow later....
b) The three counter-tenor concert at the CCP Little Theater was a most rewarding recital-concert indeed. For one, it was obviously well prepared musically: lovely awareness of tapered phrases, and the use of very stylish ornamentations (appoggiaturas, embellishments, etc.) on the da capo sections of the arias, plus an authentic take on musicological/performance practice in regards to the accompaniment. To sum it up: (in my friends words) "Ang sarap pakinggan!" Bravo indeed to Eudy, mark, and Chris! May we have more recitals like this!
c) Did anyone catch the farewell concert of the De La Salle Chorale? How was it? When are the farewell concerts of UPSA and UST? Please keep us posted with the details....

Yes The San Miguel Master Chorale gave a fantastic performance last April 4. Sana next concert niyo, kayo lang. Pero ano ba yung kacostuman? Mag-ala "all male" choir ba tayo? Hehe :D :D

Whew! It was a glorious week-long feast for choral enthusiasts last week. Monday was the joint concert of the Montserrat Male Choir and the Madaluyong Children's Chorus, Tuesday was the Ateneo Chamber Singers and the Ateneo Glee Club Alumni, Thursday was the San Miguel Master Chorale, Friday was the AILM Ensemble, Hiraya, and San Miguel Master Chorale (again!), Saturday was the Madz, and Sunday was the the UST Singers. As the saying goes, when it rains, it pours!
Of all the concerts, I only got to watch the AILM Ensemble (the former AILM Chorale) at Makati last Friday. It was a very interesting experience to say the least! Content-wise, it was a refreshing break from the Western music repertoire one usually encounters in concerts. They presented an all-Asian repertoire, encompassing vocal and instrumental music, as well as movement and dance. For me, it was an eye-opener of sorts. I never realized that there is a wealth of an hitherto untapped literature that I feel is very well suited for the Filipino choirs in general. It's a pity that few other choirs, if at all, perform these pieces. I was particularly enthralled with Fransisco Feliciano's composition "Silence My Soul" - it's fascinating how a simple piece on paper becomes profound when all it's elements are put together in a performance. Ideas, ideas for repertoire!
Who else watched these concerts? Any reviews?

If you take sa score, grabe isang page lang yan then instructions pero di mo alam on the middle part kung paano nadeveloped.

Dina Sumising is back! with such beauty, of course! Charing!
But I am now singing again here in NYC so I might have to change my nick or baka deadma na lang. There's a filipino group here in NYC/NJ called New York Consort, a group of around 20 singers, na merong mga 8-10 alumni of Madz. Pero, slightly majundrils na sila pero matataray pa rin (like the the Mazos Jerry and Linda, the Santayanas Edwin and Doyit and MJ Palencio, to name a few).
I also got my copy of the SMMC cd courtesy of your SMMC member Chai (ka-Chopa ek). Thank you, thank you!! And what a wondeful surprise at may mga dedicaysyen pa of course by you, Mr. C and most of the people na nakakantahan ko before dyan sa Pinas. Eh more than half pala ng SMMC eh kilala ko and nakakantahan ko before. Kalowka! Ang taray ng casting ng SMMC ha! I wonder how you were able to select those in the core group chuva. Nagulat ako when I found out na so and so people are not in the core group eh over sa pagkakataray ng mga boses at sightreading skills nung iba. Kalowka!
JOHNNYBBAD:
Nalowka naman ako when I heard from reliable sources na jumoin ka raw sa Madz. Talagang kinareer mo na ang chorale singing! Hope to see you here in June for the Madz US-Canada tour chuva.

Yep, after 8 1/2 years sa Ateneo, I finally took a great leap into the unknown. Tinapos ko lang ang mga Christmas commitments ng Ateneo Chamber Singers, tapos pagpasok ng new year, I joined na the Madz. Changes, changes! Glad to know your singing again. Kailan ka babalik kahit man lang for vacation?
Nota: The UST Singers did have a concert last Sunday. Since ang alis yata nila ay sa Monday, I guess that would've been their farewell concert, right? :D

Hi All...
hi Dina Sumising.. glad you are back...
i just heard a rumor that the Asian Youth Choir already released their letters of acceptance to the people who auditioned and made it to the group... :)
i'm just so happy that 5 members from the De La Salle University Chorale made the cut... who else got in ba?
I have heard earlier recordings of the AYC (Japan-based) and they sound like a very good choir... very clean phrasings... i haven't exactly seen them live but hopefully our these new members would really be a good addition to the group. GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU...
Bon Voyage to the DLSU Chorale... have fun the US and Canada... pasalubong namin... hehehehehehe
I'm sure mag pe-PEx pa rin kayo.. :)

Mudrash,
Heniwey, I'm glad na you got the CD na.
Nami-miss mo na ba ang 20th century music? Ikaw kasi, nandyan ka e. Halika rito, umuulan dito niyan.

Hi choirmuhrels....
Sobrang one of my faves ang Magnificat ni Part... What about yung Stabat Mater ni Penderecki? Yung mga nakakalowks rin na mga piyesa... Nakakatuwa pala yung mga Schaffer na pieces no? I didn't know Miniwanka is a children's choir piece pala... i heard a children's choir's recording of the song... galing galing.. mga tiyanak ang leyche...
Would it be ok to ask info from you regarding the Tapiola Children's Choir... bakit ang gagaling ng mga tiyanak na ito... hindi ko sila ma-keri..
:) Have a good day... di pa rin ako makapunta ng ortigas to get my cd from the office.... darn!!!

Aalis?
Tama ba ito:
DLSU Chorale - Umalis na - US?
UST SIngers - Umalis na - Europe, US
Madz - Aalis pa lang - US?
UPSA - Allis pa lang - for the EGP? Naku malapit na yun! hope preparations are going well!!!
What about the others po?
Example:
Madz - La Guerre
ACGC- Magnificat (Swayne) at Pamugun
UPSA - Eli, Eli
Dagdag naman po kayo. Constructive po ha!

ACGC: aside from Magnificat (though i'm not too sure it's really associated with them) and Pamugun (which i do believe is associated with ACGC), there's Rosas Pandan, Denn er, and Schaffe.
Boccelli
May 11, 2002, 01:38 AM
My opinion lang po...
Madz... La Guerre (from Tapestry ha... kaya lang parang mabilis... pero malamang it increases the difficulty of the piece pag mabilis yung interpretation... pero nakakaloka yung recording na yun... galing galing)
ACGC... hmmm... for me it would have to be Denn Herr hat seinen Engeln befohlen... they have got to be the epitome of the sound Mendelssohn was thinking about when he made the piece.. naks! :)
I also associate Go The Distance with them kasi it's THEIRS!! :)
UST... it would have to be El Guayaboso... hands down!... Miniwanka naman kasi, sila pa lang ata ang kumanta here sa Philippines so no point of comparison...
DLSU Chorale... as usual... Ilay Gandangan and Dumbele... sa conductor nila nanggaling eh so the essence of the pieces are generated and not corrupted... cheesy as it may sound... and I know how the "lolos and lolas of the choral world" don't like it, na-associate na sa group ang mga laugh-trip and "kabadingan" songs... but i know this is just for entertainment purposes and nothing more.

The Mandaluyong Children's Chorus will have a concert entitled "Angeli Domini" at the PCI Tower Bank 1 on June 2 (Sunday). Tickets are available for P150. It's one interesting choir to watch because they fearlessly tackle in their repertoire 20th-century music, and what's more, these are kids! Really amazing...:D

Songs "associated" (daw o!) with d' choirs:

Very Ensembles group ang dating namin dun kung nagkataon plus it's a Wednesday and all of us are working already. It would've been nice though. Good luck to the performing choirs.
News from DLSU Chorale in the US, they are already in New York City. They are supposed to have a concert over the weekend. I have yet to get information how their performance went. Post ko na lang.

UE Chorale is under Anna Abeleda, not Annie Nepomuceno.
And by the way, i just want to make a clarification, the Madz Et Al Marian Festival is not a show, nor a performance, it's an offering to mama mary. :)

Hiya guys!
A little plug:
Next week seems to be an intresting one. Two concerts are up for the grabs, the Marian et al on May 29, Wednesday, at the Della Strada Church (Katipunan), a free concert that which will feature the Madz and its affiliated choirs performing Marian-themed choral works, and the Mandaluyong Children's Chorus on June 2, Saturday, at the PCI Bank Tower 1.
I'll post the details soon.
Pyket: yep, the Madz will be there in New York around mid-June. Hope you can watch!

I'm looking fourward to the Marian concert of the Madz Et. Al. choirs. 20+ choirs are participating, right? That means andun ang UE, Kilyawan, Pansol (is this still in existence?), PWU, Mandaluyong Children's Choir, Ateneo Glee Club, Ateneo Chamber Singers at iba pa! Pakibalitaan naman kung sino pa yung iba! Grabe, kahit one song each, it's gona be worth being there! Sana maraming makapunta at makanood. I'm sure to be there and watch the show!
This concert may be a good indicator. I Hope for the best for all choirs!

Sorry, I forgot! Of course, one choir to complete the night on the 29th is the Madz itself! Goodluck to everyone!
Post kayo kung sinong choirs pa ang kasali and their song para ma-excite pa ang mga tao!

Bragi: Touslescabinet was just asking how you came across PinoyExchange, and if you understood what was written in these pages, since most of it are written in Filipino. He was also surprised how PinoyExchange has become "international" because of your post. But most importantly, he said that he knows you, too!

love the repertoire of the Mandaluyong Children's Chorus... :)
I see there's a Consolacion piece there as well... very interesting...
UPSA ... is the Grand Prix going to be held in Arezzo as well... that would be a good advantage for the group. Any news of their repertoire for the competition? and when is it going to be held again?
Madz... the usual outlet stores can be rumaged... but i really don't suggest doing ukay ukay in Chicago... it would still turn out to be expensive. I would usually shop along Michigan Ave and Old Orchard mall... just coz it's a really nice place to go... do have time to do the riverboat cruise... it's fun... sana walang pa lovey dovey huh... :P
DLSU-C... Off to Dallas are you guys?... (yikes.. master yoda speaking... blelch)... Do go to San Antonio if you have time to go out of Dallas... enjoy the rest of your tour...
Hope you guys had a chance to take a peak at the website I posted that had a video of the Chorale...

boccelli,
sobrang ngarag na kami nyang final concert nayan kasi isang bagsakan lang ang lahat ng mga competition for different categories NG isang araw. super patayan talaga. lipat kami ng lipat ng ibat ibang venues tapos we started singing as early as 11 am till 5 pm straight. then, announcement of winners ng 6 sa isang ice hockey stadium to accommodate 196 choirs (totalling 7,000 singers) na para kang nanunuod ng UAAP sa araneta. kaya malt-malatan na kami nung gabi na yan ng concert of winners.
eto nga pala yung mga kinanta namin for each categories:
F3 - Mixed Choir
Gabaq-An (Federizon)
Gloria (Cayabyab)
F3 Superior - Mixed Choir w/ compulsory piece (Ave Maria - Bruckner)
Elijah Rock (Hogan)
Miniwanka (Schaffer)
J1 - Spiritual, Jazz, Gospel Music
Let Me Fly
Seasons of Love (Larson arr.Calalang)
Toda Menina Baiana
Down by the riverside (Hogan)
J2 - Vocal Group (Spiritual, Jazz, Gospel)
Unusual Way (Yeston arr.Calalang)
The Prayer (Dawson arr.Calang)
Rock around the clock

Hey Enteng...
Interested akong marinig yung Bruckner niyo kasi nakanta yan ng 95 batch ng Chorale and I haven't heard other Filipino choirs sing that piece yet. Grabe saya sayahan kayo jan. :) Good luck sa Gorizia... mga diyosa nanaman kayo dun... I'm sure you guys wouldn't be forgotten by the town and the competition organizers as well.
Siya nga pala... kayo ba yung makakasama sa Tolosa this year?
You guys are at an advantage dahil you will be representing the Arezzo competition sa Grand Prix(sa Arezzo din)... kumbaga, home court advantage kayo.. Galingan niyo po... make us proud!
Hi to the DLSU Chorale... di ko sure kung magkikita kayo ng Madz sa West Coast. We miss you back here.
ACGC and ACS... any performances coming up?
choirmother... ano pong bago?

They were declared the National Choir of the Philippines by the Philippine government and by the NCAA. OK lang kayong mga taga-USTE???
In terms of international recognition wala nang makakatalo pa sa Madz. Yung "Choir of the World" title ninyo matagal nang na-achieve ng MADZ. In fact, The Madrigal Singers represented the WESTERN part of the world after beating 3 major international choral fests that covers the whole European, American and Latin-American regions. They were eventually able to beat the Eastern region thereby regarded as "THE CHAMPION OF CHAMPION CHOIRS IN THE WORLD!" Last year's International Choral Fest sa CCP, UST was NOT even invited by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCAA). The Philippines Madrigal Singers and the De La Salle University Chorale were the only two Philippine choral groups that were given the honor and prestige to grace the ocassion. In fairness to La Salle, hwag niyo silang mamaliitin kasi they were able to take Europe by storm last 1995 where they bagged gold medals and first prizes in the 8 or 10 international choir competitions that they joined. These were in Germany, Finland, Latvia, Slovenia, France, Austria, etc. Last year alone, they were champions in two international choral competition, including the prestigious Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Competition in Pontheim, Germany where they won gold medal for the Folkloric Category, Mixed Group Category, and the Public choice award for best choral group. They perform regularly at Paco Park in Manila and at Concert at the Park in Luneta.
BUT THERE IS NO DOUBT TO THE SUPERIORITY OF THE MADZ OVER ALL PHILIPPINE CHOIRS!!!

That was a pretty old message you commented on back there. I honestly don't want to raise another debate on this as I was part of the group you just lambasted, but what I can suggest is for you to check out the group first prior to downgrading their abilities. Who knows, you might actually enjoy their performance hence you can add them to the list of choirs you find pleasing to listen to. Other choir you should check out would be the San Miguel Master Chorale, Ateneo Chamber Singers, Ateneo College Glee Club, UP Singing Ambassadors, UP Concert Chorus, PNU Chorale, and many more. I don't know if you have listened to these choirs so perhaps it would be good to check them out as well. It would be a shame if you don't get to listen to the great music these groups produce. Enjoy!

ah basta kung choirs ang pinag-uusapan, nothing beats the filipino way of singing! i hope you'll all agree. maraming choir sa buong mundo pero hindi nila kayang lagyan ng lambing ang mga kantang isinasali nila sa competition. believe me. that's how philippine choirs stick out from the crowd. pero kung pag-aawayen tau, e syempre tangkilikin ang sariling atin. tga up ako *** lhat ng amen mgaleng. hehehehehe.
basta yun lang. songers from our country will fly in colors abroad. i guarantee you that.

Hey guys.
I wonder which Filipino groups will be at the Symposium in Minneapolis. Since you like to brag so much about all your choirs ("best in the World" and all) it should be VERY interesting to see some live in Minneapolis. Maybe I'll just quit that crappy World Youth Choir and apply to join one of those amazing Philipino choirs (-:
Anyway, I just came back from a little 3 day long trip around Iceland. I thought you guys might be interested in seeing some pics. Although both Iceland and the Philipines are islands, I'm quite sure they look very different. If anyone's interested, here (http://www.smaladrengirnir.com/page/bragi) it is. Goodluck to the UP SINGING AMBASSADORS as they compete for the choral world's top prize in Arezzo.
Whether they bring home the bacon or not, they have already proven their worth by just having been able to qualify for the prestigious EGP (as with UST, ACGC, and Madz, which won the prize in '97).
A toast to the superiority of Filipino choral music!

Just a little correction. The Philippines is NOT an island but an ARCHIPELAGO. Both terms have very different conceptual meanings. Thank you for sharing the wonderful pic. I am now inclined to know more about Iceland. Share on!

In behalf of my choirs, the San Miguel Master Chorale, the Philippine Chamber Choir and the Ateneo Chamber Singers, let me congratulate each and every one of you. We know of the now legendary care and attention that your conductor has lavished on every individual singer, and we are rightly proud of all your achievements as a choir. Pero siyempre, may naka-aangat sa iba, at ito ang mga super cute sa akin, in no particular order, ha!
My faves are MADZ, UE, LA SALLE, UPSA, at PNU!!! Touched talaga ako sa kanta nila! May connect sa audience ang dating nila! These choirs really know how to put a warm and sincere smile on the faces of the listeners. But, of course, may kanya-kanyang forte ang bawat choir. So ok din yung iba.
Side comment lang: turn-off lang ako sa rowdiness ng mga ibang "fans." ok lang magpakita ng support but you dont have to act like you're in a basketball game in Araneta or in a fans club meeting with Juday! I SWEAR they just gave those rowdy fans the stare! Nag-mukhang hard sell tuloy. Remember, freedom of expression is NOT an excuse for inappropriate behavior.
P.S. I think I'm starting to hear grunts from the "fans" already. oh well... :p
Apparently, I think you were talking here about those people who were cheering for the UST Singers at CCP. Why not check out this website: www.live.atlas.cz
I've read from the newspaper that there was only one Filipino among the crowd, the Philippine Ambassador. If you'll be able to watch the video, I think there's one thing in common at the CCP on the 27th of February and on the 8th of June at the Czech Republic! See for yourself and like me, you'll be proud, too.

Galing niyo USTe.

Ever since i have been a member of a choir, i always had the incling that the Mixed Choir Category (with Compulsary Piece) is the most prestigious category for a choir to win. The folkloric naman, for Filipino choirs, should always be a staple in their list of winnings. I would, however, yield to choirs from Mongolia or Ukraine for this but ... nah... I think Filipino Choirs should always win the Folkloric category.
Our strengths when it comes to the folkloric category:
- piece... wala na akong masasabi dito... marami nang piyesa ang nakapagpatunay na iba talaga ang mga composer at arranger na filipino when it comes to folkloric music... i can admit there are others that lack a little oomph pero still may dating na rin...
- interpretation... loss ang mga foreign choir pag ginagawa ng mga filipino choirs ang mga folkloric pieces with their own interpretations dahil nakaka baliw talaga...
- talent... yun na yun... hindi na kailangan i-elaborate pa ito... alam na nating lahat how talented we filipinos are

I FULLY AGREE with your insightful comments, Bocelli.
Anyway, congratulations to our representatives abroad--UST Singers and the UP Singing Ambassadors. You continue the Filipino's dominance in choral singing.
I think its about time we stop the crab mentality and just simply appreciate the efforts of EACH AND EVERY FILIPINO CHOIR who represent our country abroad. Whether they're first or not, they still are able to keep the fire burning and pave an easier way for future generations of choirs to maintain our status as a formidable force in the international choral arena.
Carry on!

Hi Guys...
Anyone here care to make a review of the concert last Mondy by the German choir and ACS? I heard it was really good. Make kwento naman! :) Thanks
I also heard that the De La Salle University Chorale will have their Homecoming Concert on August 16, malamang at Philamlife Theater. I hope you guys could watch. If anyone from the Chorale is here, would you care to share your repertoire for the concert so we'd know what to expect from the show. Thanks!

Tenk you at marunong kang sumagot ng tanong.

damn right. speaks well of the richness of our talent pool. enough said.

nah, this is just a discussion board. don't take it too seriously. we take pride in every filipino choir who had done well abroad - of course, our university inclination will always be there.

in a capsule, the kammerchor stuttgart rocked the house. the german choir sang frank martin' s mass for two four part choirs; edward elgar's four choral songs op 53 nr.1 and 2; sergie rachmaninoff's all night vigil op.37; and gustav mahler's ich bin der welt abhanden gekommen. all sacred songs sung exceptionally well. awesome. bravo.
not to be outdone were the ateneo chamber singers. the choir sang robin estrada's awit sa panginoon; fidel calalang jr's pater noster; and cipriano cayabyab's aba po santa mariang reyna. for a greenhorn, they're a pretty damn good choir. tip of cap to choirmeister jonathan velasco.
btw, acs will have their launching concert on august 18 at the ateneo de manila university. hope to see y'all there...o ayan, leo, free ad yan. ;)

This was held in Czech i think. COuld anyone provide info? I think this was on the Varsitarian.
I think the choral competition in Olomouc (where UST won five 1st prizes) is NOT the most prestigious choral competition in Europe, based on reputation.
The EUROPEAN GRAND PRIX (EGP) is widely recognized as the most pretigious, and so far, only one Filipino choir took home the bacon (although UST and ACGC has already qualified for the EGP in the recent past. UPSA is competing in the EGP this year).
To vie for the EGP, a choir has to REPRESENT one or more of the five more prestigious choral contests than Olomouc: Tours, Tolosa, Varna, Gorizia, and Arezzo. Aside from these top five, there are also Debrecen, Koors, and the highly regarded Neuchatel competion in Switzerland. FYI.
Yung lang.

hi zion..
i'm positive that the Debrecen in Hungary is also part of the EGP Choir Competitions group. Dun kasi nagcompete yung ACGC when they represented Tours for the EGP.
yun lang po. :)

Hi Bocelli,
OK naman yung German choir...Stuttgart Kammerchor...led by the very well known Frieder Bernius...
For me, di ako masyadong nabilib sa concert...I dont know... before i launch into this diatribe, gusto ko lang sabihin na this is my PERSONAL view of what i experienced last Monday...
Ok yung Martin mass, though there was (and for the most part of their entire concert, one of the few) shaky intonation in the opening of the Kyrie...the grace notes were'nt really articulated as much as I hoped...mahirap kasi mabago dahil masyado na akong na impress nung performance ng mass na ito ng Westminster Cathedral Choir (a view shared by a good friend and member of the ACS)...pero ganda ng interpretation at performance ng Gloria...kuha ni Herr Bernius ang lilt sa et resurrexit...
The disappointment was probably in the Elgar part songs...ewan, di ko masyado talaga type kasi muddled ang English enunciation nila...
The choir has an EXCELLENT bass singer(s). Basta everyone kept remarking how audible his low, low notes were.... (though the Bb in the nunc dimitiis of the rach vespers was still...uhm, nowhere to be heard)...he's really impressive...whoever that bass singer was...sya ba yung afro ang buhok? hehehe
Yung Rachmaninoff vespers...quite unidiomatic for the choir...pero novel pa rin ang touch ni Frieder...not as arresting as Jojo's interpretation with the PCC a few years back (those gliding pianissimos ala MADZ sa Priditye...wow! galing nun!). For a german choir, stuttgart sounds uhm a little small in sound... daig sila ng UST (meron bang tatalo sa kanila sa palakihan ng tunog/palakasan ng boses???). I guess the Rach vespers demanded a more robust and big momma sound, instead of a more pristine tone...magaling naman yung tenor soloist...AT NAKAKGULAT yung ginawa ni Frieder sa doxology --- nag cut time siya --- kaya parang naging madrigal yung movement... though its beyond me to question his interpretation, i felt that the vespers demands a really IMPERIAL and MAJESTIC reading...no need to tweak with the tempo's far from the wishes of Comrade Sergey Rachmaninoff...
Most choirs who perform this popular work fail to remember that the movements were based on the SLAVIC CHANTS. Kaya pag nawala yung devotional spirit, nagiging lightweigth yung dating ng interpretation...
Ich Bin?? Mas maganda sa CD. enough said.
Wonderful ang tone ng Stuttgart...sayang lang at halos wala silang kinantang Mendelssohn...they were for me the choir that gave the definitive DENN ER HAT SEINEN performance... wala ring bruckner or brahms (ay oo nga pala nag encore sila nung brahms na parang hymnal ang dating...)
OK yung ateneo chamber...bravo kay Robin at mukang winner yung bago niyang piyesa...may tatak na talaga si Ginoong Estrada...
Dilemma ko Boccelli, homecoming concert ng chorale at free concert nang san miguel ay parehas sa Aug 16...mag aaral na akong hatiin katawan ko, for i wouldnt want to miss both concerts...

The European Grand Prix for some may be the most prestigious competition in Europe but some choral authorities would point to the International Choral Competition in Marktoberdorf, Germany as being the most difficult in the European competitions. The latter is held every two years and is known to be the toughest competition in Germany and probably one of the toughest in the world. The EGP, although having two phases in order to join and win (which means it is difficult to be a part of it), is plagued with a lot of politics lately, thus smearing its well-established integrity, as some people would tend to believe. Of course, we are all proud
