I wished PowerpuffGhurl was able to watch to give his (her?) musical critique. You won't find it in this post. Bwahahahahahaha!!!

For those who love choral music who either snubbed the acgc farewell concerts or were unavoidably detained and could not watch, nag-lost kayo, exclamation point (!), exclamation point (!). I was fortunate enough to watch both shows this probably being my last chance to watch this ACGC batch live as I'm leaving the country...

Take the back seat to the Zambo, the black and white barong, and the Men With Long Tapis costumes (na last year lang ginamit). Winner!!! Ganda ng black costumes ng mga males with the matching stole (ewan ko kung yun yung tawag don --- mukhang smaller version ng ginagamit ng pari. hehehehehehe... as if banal... chika lang!). Yung girlies, with their ateneo blue and gold, panalo. Plus the Gran Prix Europeen quasi-pastel (?) motif. Basta. Winner!

Winner soloist yung sa Ave Regina Coelorum (go Jonel!!). Pero the stand out talaga for the all-male section was Robin Estrada's piece de resitance! Ted-em. Grabe na... Akala ko at first may pagkatunog Awit yung isang part, but no!!! Biglang bwelo. The use of the "percussions" (the bamboo, and kubing) were magnificent. Nag-lost yung mga hindi naka-watch nung Friday. Ted-em was definitely a masterpiece in itself. Grabe na si Robin... The mixed choir na: definitely miles better than your last concert (recital?) You're still my winner pokpok girly!!! j/k!!! ;). At bakit biglang nagwala si Chris Ong? Gitna pa naman?! Hahahahaha! :D

Saturday night: Totally brilliant... ever!!! Medyo hindi ko lang trip yung Lied im Freien --- yung kanta itself not the way the men sang it. The men were absolutely germanic in their interpretation, nagulat nga ako eh! Galing! Sobra. Pero the piece itself (which is, i believe, a required one?) I don't like much. The Pamulinawen was able to make us in the audience smile with its Filipino character (a testament most obvious that Filipinos truly empathize more when their own songs are sung). So too was Pamugun (winner Deepa Scream!!!). I've always loved the way the Glee Club sings Pamugun (especially with Ate Rina and Papo moments!), and that night was no exception! Yet there was something different about the interpretation that night. Something more magical about it if i may say so myself.

I totally loved the power and depth of Libera me. And I cannot dance!! Oh my God!!! I loved it better than Musicians Wrestle Everywhere (na ginamit sa Tolosa?). Grabe, my friends were right: matutulala ka lang sa I cannot dance... Speechless... Flawless... Caturog was once more Auiee's that night, and she still stuns the audience into reminiscent (yearning) silence. Tanong: bakit nga hindi kinanta ang Nonot???

I will probably never be able to watch another live performance of my favorite ACGC. Hindi ko alam kung kailan ako babalik, or kung bumalik man ako, obviously iba na yung character -- aalis na yung iba "moving on", Professor Navarro will be turning in the baton to a different conductor as he pursues his doctorate sa Michigan. But this probably was the brightest I have ever seen the Glee Club in, full of hope for their journey to come. (Last year's homecoming concert was magnificent and electric as well, though.) That being the case, I loved every second of it. I just hope and pray that the Glee Club remains humble in their victories and magnanimous in their defeats (kung mayroon man).

Eniweys (grabe sobrang non-cohesive ng post koh!) Sa Thursday na kayo aalis, di ba? GOOD LUCK SOBRA!!! Pagdadasal ko kayo sa Australia kasama ng aking Tasmanian Devil/Sydney Beach Boy Chorale!!! :D :D :D Mabuhay kayo!

Sandali lang, musicians have been using the word "harang" since time immemorial. Does anybody know where it came from? Etymology ba. It's really been bothering me :bonkself: Oo really talaga. :rotfl:

WINNER! Panalo grabe. shiyempre lahat sila nagbo-board na ng eroplano patungong Europa as I am writing this pero baka sakali lang mabasa nila before June 1 para malaman nilang may isa pa silang fan dito. (GO JONEL!!!!)

PAhaBoL: natutuwa talaga ako na nagiging magkaibigan mga tao sa iba't-ibang choirs, maging up man o ust o admu o dlsu ... eh kung basketball ang pinag-uusapan nagpatayan na sana tayo sa internet :evil_lol: (kung pwede man yon)! someone said nga nung concert ng acgc which was attended by members of several choirs, hanggang dito lang naman yung competition sa pilipinas pero pag may lalabas sa bansa, all out support! the victory of a single choir is a victory for the whole country :lily:
anyway shucks naloloka ako trying to figure out who everyone subscribing to this thread is. si choirmaster, obvious naman eh. kilala ko yata si sopranina,si indiegirl, pero the others ...shucks! ***** di ko lang talaga kayo kilala at all. (johnvianney...daming clues pero di ko pa magets). as for me, di niyo talaga ako kilala. di naman ako sikat eh. :insane:
sige!kapayapaan! (is it just me or has the number of smilies quadrupled in the past month?!?!)

Are you Jeff Lat? Pag nagkukuwento kasi friend ko about her fond memories of your choir eh naririnig ko pangalan mo... Anyway, i can testify na magaling talaga ang San Beda High School glee club pero di na ako nakakapanood lately. When we were in high school, parang sa amin nun, you had it made talaga (oo no! i-kumpara mo naman sa aming all-female choir). :)

Hi!

Boccelli...

From what I know, the Tapiola Children's Choir does not join any choral competitions, Europe man o hindi. This is because their main vision is to promote musical excellence through cross-cultural ambassadorship. Thay specialize in singing contemporary works na especially commissioned to them. Most of these works come from Ukraine, Estonia, Russia, Germany, Bulgaria, Japan and of course ang kanilang native country, Finland.

The Philippine Madrigal Singers
Gran Premio Kutxa 1996 (Tolosa)
1997 GRAND PRIX EUROPEEN DU CHANT CHORAL (Tours)- WINNER!

University of Sto. Tomas Singers
Gran Premio Citta di Gorizia 1998 (Gorizia)
1999 GRAND PRIX EUROPEEN DU CHANT CHORAL (Varna)- FINALIST

Ateneo de Manila College Glee Club
Grand Prix de la Ville de Tours 2000 (Tours)
2001 GRAND PRIX EUROPEEN DU CHANT CHORAL (Debrecen)- ??????

So paano yan? GO UPSA!!!!

Nga pala Boccelli, walang website ang Debrecen therefore walang website ang Grand Prix 2001.

PLS TAKE NOTE OF THE GENERAL IMPRESSION OF EUROPEAN CHORAL MUSIC AUTHORITIES ABOUT FILIPINO CHOIRS!!! GO PHILIPPINES!

"you were able to communicate the german piece very well. i know of a choir
who speaks german very well but they were not able to communicate the meaning
to the audience.

"it was not a surprise for your choir to sing at such a high level, philippine
choirs are known all over the world for that. but i was amayed at the level
you sang brahms (vineta), i know of only about 3 or 4 choirs in germany
who could sing at almost that level. that's why for me your performance
was a miracle. i'm coming with you now to hear you sing more miracles at
the mass.
ever since your performance yesterday i was your number 1 fan."

Wener Pfaff
Choir studio conductor ng Marktoberdorf Competitions
He is also the conductor of studio vocale karlsruhe and is one of the worlds foremost authorities in romantic music (well opinion niya iyon sayang di
siya judge, di nanalo ang vineta.)

Yun lang po!!!

Hello... Kamusta ka na?

Aba, umariba na naman ang ACGC. I just received my copy of their cd recordings (2cd) na may autograph pa ni Joel & Choirmother. I am sure it's so much fun. Kaya't magsosolo flight na lang ako next year at magiikot on my own! LOL. Kalowka!

We would not have made it without you. They sang perfectly! But no, umarya at umariba pa rin ang Pinoy tsarm, ika nga!

Wala silang bukang bibig kundi yung Brahms namin na kinanta in competition. MA! I also think it was good. Ang ibig sabihin lang mothers, ay binili ko yung CD, pero in the meantime winala ng Emirates ang bagahe ko! Tingnan natin, baka lumabas tomorrow.

Yun lang. Daming trabahong naiwan, with PCC's programmes in Singapore and Taipei, and my repertoire for Singapore, and my repertoire for the World Youth Choir in December, plus San Miguel of course. Kalowka!

P.S. DINA SUMISING: Kumusta ka na? We miss you!

CHOIRMOTHER!!!

Nagbalik-ka-hirang ka na ba sa Pilipinas???? Does this mean na buong GC eh bumalik and then may they fly back for the Grand Prix or ikaw lang???

Aba!!!

I am sure sobrang fun nung celebration ek and I could actually picture you with that beermug... BUTCH NA BUTCH!!! LOL. Reminds me of the World Youth Choir when they were there in Manila nung 1998. Sobrang fun din non, diba??? Lalo na nung party ek sa CCP at wala akong kiber na nakipaglampuchingan sa lobby with that Swedish soloist. Kalowka!

Again, CONGRATS, CHOIRLOWLA and the ACGC.... Ikaw ba ang magcoconduct for the European Grand Prix????

LOL.

DINA SUMISING:

Lost talaga ang beauty mo mother. Glee Club continues with the tour; I think nasa Cologne or Paris na sila ngayon... at ang beauty ko lang ang umuwi ditrels sa Pinas. Joel is leaving for Paris on Thursday to join the group. BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!

At merong isang Korean student na sinundan ang Ateneo Glee Club magmula last year pa! matooks! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Eventually, nilibre niya ako ng isa pang beer. Pangalan niya'y Martin something-or-other. MA!

Ako? Settle down na naman, work to death... gusto kong pumunta ng America, pero takot ako sa visa (this after a gazillion Schengen visas to Europe).

I hope Joel, Aying and Jay were able to arrive there safely. Okay naman kami dito. We had dinner in Kublai's last week. Get together nang mga naiwan: Dada, Daphine, Faye, Stella, Alex, Jay, and Mags. The day after that, Eunice, Alex, Stella and I had a serious talk with Joel regarding transitional problems. They also got their tickets during that meeting.

We just finished org presentations and it was so tiring. As usual walang tulugan the night before. It was fun naman...hay naku! ang intro ng beloved Euniche! 2 minutes and 20 seconds lang ang alloted per session. Almost 60 batches siguro yun!

Aloha! from the land of the pineapples and active volcanoes...magandang umaga!

Lauridsen was good, kanino mo naman nakuha ang news? *** kasi eh di nanood.

yup, we're here na sa hawaii, grabe po ang jet lag, after lang nung concert namin nung 23 eh nun palang kami nag impake, kaya la talaga 2log b4 umalis. anyway, - the O Magnun seem to be easy at the first glance but the interpretation and the phrasing-phasing really counts...plus the grandioso climatic alleluia-mysterium part is, easy to learn (the notes) but oh my, staggering in full is not. the pianissimo, well...sana pinanuod mo - anyway, mag re release naman yata kami nang live recording nung send off concert namin.

One week kami dito sa honolulu, then fly kami sa L.A. for 4 days - baka nga manuod si Morten Lauridsen sa concert namin eh - hehe, mangarap ba!? taga dun kasi siya dba? pero may possibility daw...

Stabat Mater was "created" by J.Barkauskas...at total weird-kaloko-pamatay piece na siyang kumain ng mahaba habang araw na rehearsal. U should have come talaga...narinig mo sana ang mala-pababang jet from the sky. at serena ng bumbero...

Anyway, mag i stay kami sa Mexico for the World Choral Festival for 9 days, di ko lang alam kung anong date..anyway c u nalang next time...gud day!

Dina Sumising:

Ako kasi, medyo busy with San Miguel Master Chorale. Siyanga pala, na-move ang inaugural concert ng SMMC to December of this year.

Ma'm OA is celebrating her 73rd birthday this Wednesday, kung saan ang simbahan ng della Strada ay pupunuin ng choirs for the 7 p.m. mass. All Madz affair itetch.

Oo nga pala, Philippine Chamber Choir will have a concert sa Philamlife on August 9, Thursday at 7:30. This is our farewell concert before departing on August 13 for Singapore for the Asia South Pacific Symposium on Choral Music. Ang lowla mo ay may seminar on rehearsal techniques, tapos may I conduct the Symposium choir chuva. Sa mga nagbabasa sa PEx, tickets are 300 and 200 pesoseses. Title ng concert ay Made in the Philippines, kasi lahat ng kanta, although Philippine at Asian, ay gawa sa Pilipinas. Di va vong?

Ayos. Sige pare, tulog na ko. Marami pa akong kamachohang gagawin bukas. CHENKEEEE!!!

Hi Everyone,

I would just like to extend my sincerest apologies to the members of the Philippine Madrigal Singers for an earlier comment I posted regarding their July 14 performance. I do feel that my posted comment was highly unprofessional and definitely uncalled for. I am sorry for that immature action. I don't really expect to gain forgiveness, I just pray that you accept my apologies. Once again, I'm sorry.

Well.. ang nasagap ko na gossip nung Sunday regarding who won the grand prix is the children's choir who won sa Bela Bartok Competition(Debercen). So parang may bias na rin siguro kahit papaano kasi mas kilala na sila nung audience and all that hoola baloo...

I'm sure you guys made us proud just by being there and representing our country... sana other choirs will also follow....

I've been hearing such great things about them... ano na ang ginagawa nila ngayon?

Yun lang po.. ingat sa lahat!!!

Aug 6, 2001, 04:02 PM
M_Lover...
si Alfred Samonte kasi ang Production Supervisor ngayon ng Madz... he's a Tenor 1 of the current batch at nasa second quartet(left) ng semi circle(in other words, yung nagsosolo ng Circle of Life). Actually yung book seemed like a collage of different experiences by different Madz Alumni and those who are still with the group. Nakakatuwa yung mga stories. Very interesting talaga yung book.

August Concert Month-

August 10 - Ateneo de Manila College Glee Club
UP (don't know which theater)

August 11 - Ateneo de Manila College Glee Club
Philamlife Auditorium

August 18 - De La Salle Univeristy Chorale
Philamlife Auditorium

Please support all the Philippine choral groups...

side note:

JV... hey... nakauwa ka na pala... sarap naman... anyways, naalala ko na yung face mo from the 89 batch na napanood ko sa CCP Library... :) i'm glad nagustohan mo yung mga files na nilagay ko sa cd... kasi nasayangan naman ako sa cd space kung di ko lagyan ng other songs... sige... i want to hear the choirs you joined... hey... sobrang hirap bang sumali sa chanticleer... parang dream choir ko ata yun... parang ang galing kasi eh... sige... update me kung ano na ang nangyayari sayo jan... nga pala... watch out for the upcoming CD ng Chorale... mala Life Shaped by Music.. pero di ganun ka comprehensive ang selections... siguro from the Chorale's 95 - 99 batch lang... :)

M_Lover... hey... its good na nalaman mo na kung sino si Alfred... actually, if I'm not mistaken bass ata siya sa dati niyang choir tapos ngayon Tenor 1 na... oh diba... ibang klase... actually yung tunog ni alfred sobrang compliments the other voices of the group.. kasi kung hindi ganun tumunog ang isang member malalaman mo naman na parang iba na yung kabuoang tunog ng group.

What a good showing for UST... I congratulate them... I believe the festival ended a couple of weeks ago. Anyways... what a great season this is/will be...

Aptly started by the Madz with a successful concert last July 29, then followed by the Ateneo College Glee Club this Aug 10 and 11, and then the De La Salle University Chorale this Aug 18 and soon the UST Singers on the third week of August.... fabulous fabulous...

QUESTION: I wonder who the La Salle Glee Club and UST Chorale is in the list of the nominees for AWIT Awards best choral group. Good luck to all the nominees:

Kundirana, Ateneo Glee Club, UP Singing Ambassadors, La Salle Glee Club?, UST Chorale?, and the Malaybalay Children's Choir

And he truly deserves to be there, I might add :)

shulien,

hey there... actually the UPSA competed sa 2nd Brahms Competition in Wernigrode where the DLSU Chorale competed nung 1999(2 silvers, Category Winner in Folkloric). Maganda ang showing the UPSA coz they won the Category Prize for the A1 Category - Mixed Choir with Compulsary Piece(chose one from the Drei Gessange list of Brahms... I believe they used Vineta) I believe they also received a Special Prize for their performance of Eli by Bardos(Competition piece nung 1995 Cantonigros), they also won the Category Prize for the Folkloric Category. This made gave them the priviledge of competing for the Grand Prix of that Competition which they sadly lost.

Heniway, pag nagka career ka jan balitaan mo akich ha... sayang nga yung beadies... oh well... sige... kita kits na lang tayo when i go back there... saya ng Decadence.. i heard... good luck sa mga chuva dun... pictures ha!!! Sayang, Zack, you missed UPCC's concert last week sa UP. They dedicated it to the freshmen. Abelardo Hall was full. See you all on Saturday. (Bring handkerchiefs, just in case.)

yup UPSA won awards in the J. Brahms competition in Germany. They also won first prize in a competition in slovakia, won first prize in the folkloric category in cantonigros, spain and 5th place in the mixed choir category.

In case you don't know, the PWU chorale is also on tour under Robert Delgado. I believe they also competed with UPSA in cantonigros and won 3rd place in the mixed choir category.;) :)

Thanks Boccelli...

Yes I'm looking forward to the Chorale concert this Saturday. The repertoire is indeed interesting...may Lauridsen!

Uy lam mo, diba gusto mo yung O Magnum Mysterium ni Lauridsen? Do you have a piece? I was able to get one, baka gusto mo just tell me.

Grabe, within the past month I was able to watch UST Singers (yung farewell), Philippine Chamber Choir (farewell concert last thurs), and of course yung ACGC. Ang galing lahat!!! Tapos sa Saturday Chorale naman.

Galing talaga ni Choirmother. Totoo nga yung sinabi ni Prof Joel Navarro na you're the best choral mind in the country today. :) I've watched the PCC quite a few times na at lagi akong naiimpress...sana maulit yung Zadok the Priest...

Please ACGC, tell me where I can get your CD (bago maubos ulit pera ko...)

Hiya PExer peeps!

Thanks for those who watched our concerts last Friday and Saturday. We really appreciate your support that you've been giving our choir, and that of others, too.

Email me if anybody likes to buy the latest CD we did in Europe.

Ang dami ko pang kwento but I'm still tamad to write it down :)

Will post our whole adventure in Europe soon

Monteverdi: my good friend is really nuts over Eric Ericsson and his various ensembles. He bought a whole ton (and I'm not exaggerating!) of Ericsson recordings while we were in Europe. Perhaps you'd like to get in touch with him :)

Sino sya? What's he's email? send mo na lang sa kin.

Is he your bass section head? The one Joel said is "a voracious collector of choral cds?"...what's his name?

Uy saan ako makabili ng bagong CD?

MONTEVERDI:

ERIC ERICSON handles the ERIC ERICSON CHAMBER CHOIR and for some time handled the SWEDISH RADIO CHOIR. From the little I know of the SWEDISH RADIO CHOIR and thru one of its former members/soloists (Choirmother, do I write more??? LOL), pabago-bago ng conductor itong SWEDISH RADIO CHOIR. One time the choir worked under TONI KALJUSTE for Rachmaninoff's Vespers na hindi feel ni Choirmother ang interpreteyshen.

I don't know who handles the present group of the Swedish Radio Choir but during their most recent North American tour earlier this year, the SWEDISH RADIO CHOIR joined forces with THE ERIC ERICSON CHAMBER CHOIR and napanood ko nga ang kanilang performance dito sa NYC. Nalowka ako sa tunog dahil totoo nga ang description ni Choirmother about their sound when I inquired about it 3 years ago - rich texture and over sa pagkaprecise ang mga notes at kalowka ang repertoire nila..... 20th century chuva.... And for their encore eh narinig ko rin ang authentic interpreteyshen of Och Jung Frun.....

Also, I remember asking Choirmother 3 years ago kung sikat itong SWEDISH RADIO CHOIR na ito dahil nga itong aking nakilalang friend (ek!) eh part of the group. Sila lang naman ang pinakamagaling na professional choir sa buong mundo!"..... and choirmother talked about watching the group in concert where he was literally covering his ears dahil nga sa sobrang gandang sound na narinig nya. Well, choirmother, I agree. Pero now, I wonder how the Swedish Radio Choir compares with the PCC and the SMC na hinahandle mo. O, diba???? Charing.

MONTEVERDI, The Swedish Radio Choir's latest CD is entitled Psalm of Repentance by Schnittke. Isa pang nakakalokang CD na puro dissonant chords ek na parang magugunaw na ang mundo or lalabas and devil ek. Since wala akong piyesa eh hindi ko matake (kahit pa soloista dun yung aking swedish frieind) so I gave my copy to Choirmother.

Hope this helps. If you got any specific question, eh post mo rito and I can call my Swedish friend and personally ask him. Come to think about it, I haven't spoken to that guy in a few months. Time to stay in touch.

Hapi singing to ol....

Congratulations La Salle for a nice concert last saturday! Sana madami pa kayong anniv. na dumating!!!

Same with the Ateneo sa UP-Chapel last Aug. 10 (ten nga ba?). I really agree with what Sir Joel said...Good luck to your new conductor!

Good luck sa grupo and sana mas maging active kayo ngayong year nato!

Anyway, I can't wait for the concert of the UST Singers, sana sa mas malaking venue ha! maganda sana dun sa Museum nyo pero medyo maliit dahil sa dami ng tao. I hope that we can all watch the new batch of this choir kasi iba talaga, with 3 months training daw (accdg. to the host nung farewell nila) and 3/4 daw ng members eh bago, kakabaliw! Congrats for being chosen as the best choir in the festival that you've just joined.

I heard na the Arezzo competition is one of the most prestigious and difficult competitions in the world. And they got the Grand Prize pa! Tama ba ako?

If ever they win in the European Grand Prix next year (another achievement that Filipinos can be proud of), UPSA could only be the 2nd Filipino choir after the Madz to snag the top choral award of the world....! They now have a shot at being called the BEST, so good luck to the group!

Here is my (personal) list of the TOP UNIVERSITY CHOIRS in the Philippines (regardless of batch or time):

1. Philippine Madrigal Singers - Still the only Philippine choir to bag the most prestigious choral award in the world-- the European Grand Prix. The most 'original' and 'classy' choir I've ever heard and seen. Here's hoping the Madz's new conductor would be able to equal (if not surpass) the triumphs of the group under National Artist Andrea Veneracion.

2. (All tied for 2nd place)

UST Singers - Their meteoric rise to the creme de la creme of the choral community is amazing. Their detail to tone and musical timing is magical.

Ateneo de Manila College Glee Club - An A1 conductor (Joel Navarro), their determination to succeed, and their faith in God's power are their strengths. They have also shown themselves to be true survivors in the industry (they wouldn't be the oldest choir in the Philippines for nothing...!).

UP Singing Ambassadors - The most underrated choir among the best. Hey, these guys are total performers--they not only sing well (and boy, do they sing with HEART) but they also dance well (just watch their rendition of folk dances of the Philippines, a feast for the eyes!). Their latest triumphs in Europe only prove that they have what it takes to stay on TOP. Kudos for making the world sit up, watch and listen again to our unique but undeniably infecting music!

3. UP Concert Chorus - Considered to be one of the sturdiest vanguards of Philippine choral music. Also one of the most well-travelled. Their brand of choral music may somewhat be seen as traditional in some aspects (think broadway medleys, think piano accompaniment, think "A Chorus Line" type of choreography) but on the whole, their style is what makes them what they are--a CLASSIC! (The late great Rey Paguio would have been proud.)

De La Salle Chorale, while not on my list YET, is slowly inching their way up to the top spots with the other great choirs. Their 1995 success in the international arena ( I think that tour was still their best yet) has shown how promising they are. What they need is focus and consistency to gain my vote.

To the other aspiring university choirs: I hope that the success of these venerable choirs would be your inspiration to strive for excellence in the choral field. Work hard, have faith in yourselves and in God, keep humble (this is a necessity), and learn, learn, LEARN in life! I'm sure you'll also do our country proud someday.

Grabe na itich!!! sus my got!!!
ang galing ng ust singers kagabi...i really like the first part - and the second part is so relaxing and so pleasing to the eye! ang galing ng mga pakulo nyo ha!
with matching walk ala miss universe sa back ng auditorium while singing - ganda ng entrance ha! hindi ba kayo nahirapang kumanta while walking with grace? haha!
and with Tita Gloria Diaz este Tita President Gloria Arroyo there - it was a very complete concert for them, dba?
i saw her nga when she was leaving and she was very happy and so awed - and thankful sa citation nyo na best choir sa Mexico. no doubt about it.
grabe ang stabat at o magnum ni lauridsen...i never imagined na ganun ang tunog nyo with 3 months of training and a month of touring and 3/4's yata eh puro fresh-new-hired...juice ko!!! pano pa kaya pag 1 year ang preparation nyo?

Grabe na to!!!

With matching intriga pa on the side. CHARITY!!!!:) :D :)

O sya sya sya...si Letty Ramos sya, baka mabuking pa kung cynthia alexanders aketch. E mano naman ngayon di ba??!?! E wiz naman ako sa pagka-known sa choral-chuva-dimension...isa lamang akong hamak na mang-aawit.;)

Mga muthrels!

Tingnan natin kung makapasok na ang aking message na ititch... kasi naman for the longest time e wa ako enter... parang nagha-hang na hindi ko maintindihan.

San Miguel PHilharmonic and San miguel Master Chorale just finished a 3-day recording session at Philamlife... Cayabyab to death... Misa 2000 and Te Deum... to die for ang sound!

Bumalik na ang Singing Ambassadors from their highly successful tour around Europe! Congrats sa inyong lahat! Galing-galing n'yo naman! :beam:

Anyways, I heard from a reliable source na may homecoming concert sila this late October, at sa CCP Main Theater pa daw! Bongga! Sikat sila, ha! Totoo ba 'to?

as much as i dont want to react but, ganda naman ng reaction mo zion! i have seen all the top choirs in the country, though im not from ust, but in fairness to them, they have the most distinct sound plus the tangible consitency of quality and good vocal capabilities for individual members, clean singing will always be with them. the madz will always be remembered for their heart-speaking language of singing and the infamous chair that made them disctict to others. these 2 groups wouldn't be cut out of the list i bet you.

we really can not say who is the best or who's better, but we can really see who's doing good and who's doing a mess...who's feeling magaling and who's humble.

i can hand pick a few chosen choir in the land, whom i can really say at par with that of the europe's. though some are still budding and has the potential, they still need a lot of sweat,
tears and years to be equal with the known choirs. but one thing for sure, filipinos are great singers. needless to say, has the monopoly of great groups in asia.

i will always have a respect to the madz and ust singers, plus the ateneo (recently) for a very neat sound and clean singing.

congrats to the singing ambassadors from up! and goodluck on ur egp next year! t'was a nice refreshing show last night, t'was very upsa!

to the people who watched the UPSA concert, pa lagay naman ng list ng songs na kinanta nila sa concert nung friday... I wasn't able to watch it as well kasi may practice ako...

fujitsu;

i think what zion meant by his post was why does the other guy think UST is the best, could he compare the sound with the other groups? yun lang.... :)

I miss hearing the UST Singers... *sigh*... obviously my heart still goes out for the Chorale and Madz... pero nakakamiss lang talaga yung USTe... I wish they come up with a concert soon...

to Choirmaster:
if ever you get a chance to read this, i have been hearing different choirs lately and it seems like nagkakaroon ng pagbabago sa tunog ng mga groups. parang may transformation na naman. hindi ko ma explain kung ano... i just feel and notice the difference. not saying that its not good, its just.... hmmm... different and intriguing. whatcha think?

yeah boccelli, i know what zion meant, but for me, his post was kind of offensive to the ust people. i notice while im scanning thorugh the pages of this topic, sila lang yata at ang madz, ang hindi nagrerespond dito. kaya medyo delikado yung statement ni zion na baka ma-mis-understood.

i realy like those two choirs, they know the value of humilty and professionalism.

as i have said, hindi natin masasabi kung sino ang magaling, makikita lang natin kung sino ang nag-fi-feeling magaling na chaka naman, and kung sino ang tahimik at "let-my/our-achievements-say-it" ang drama. i prefer the latter, because an overhyped-group is irritating as i have seen in here.

fujutsu, i never meant anything when i said that "infamous remark" except maybe that for one to be credible in saying that a certain choir is the best, he should have at least a CONSIDERABLE amount of comparison with other choirs. in short, magkaroon naman ng basehan ang statements mo and listen to the others before you give your verdict. for all you know, you might be missing a lot. may ipapakita rin namang galing ang iba and i know it. i never even expected that my simple remark would create such SPIRITED reactions from others (happy halloween!!! :D )

anyways, narinig ko naman and UST at bilib din naman ako sa kanila. dapat nga magsaya tayo at talaga namang madami tayong magagaling na choirs that really made us proud to be Noypis. andyan ang madz, ateneo, upsa, la salle, at siyempre uste rin.

so to all my musical brods out there, PEACE. :)

P.S.

It has been a while since I last visited the thread. I'm amazed that it still keeps on growing. Keep it coming, guys.

To my friend who has missed UPSA's homecoming concert at the CCP, here is my (hopefully...) objective, impartial observations on the group:

1. The sacred and international songs they sang were very European sounding--clean, refined, and flowing. They're musical skills have impressively developed in such a short time and evolved into a higher level of choral singing. No wonder they are the toast of Europe this year. Ed (their conductor) has done a good job in training his singers to be well-focused and disciplined musicians.

2. The latter part of the concert was more visual as it featured the group's knack for dancing. While their medley of Filipino folkdances was colorful and visually delightful, it still lacked the energy that professional dancers would be known for. The women were pretty and spritely but the men need more attention to "terpsichorian details." Their "Kalesa" was infectious but the men's rendition of "maglalatik" is negligible.

Generally, UPSA's homecoming concert is, quoting their conductor Ed Manguiat's closing remark, "...not perfect but it comes from the heart." Such humility is admirable.

Indeed, the group is undergoing a transformation of sorts: becoming more mature, stronger, and more potent singers. And yet, UPSA still has that enigmatic kind vulnerability that quite endears them to their audience.

I watched the concert. I was entertained and was touched.

Again, congratulations to the group.

Someone just commented a few postings back that choirs in the country are changing their sound...

Indeed! Well, not just here but in other places as well. Some famous choirs, like in their newer recordings, have gone a long way from their recordings just 20 years ago! (RIAS Kammerchor for example...comparing their Bach recordings...)

If you have heard that black Madz cd (A life shaped by music), you would also notice that their sound has evolved from the very rich, vibrato laden sound circa 1970s to the refined, "straighter," purer toned ensemble that won the EGP in 97. Albeit, the lines and unique phrasing/charisma hasn't really changed at all! (I like the Madz in Tolosa 1996, that was really special!)

UST 1995 sounds quite differerent from the UST of 2001, notwithstanding the change in members. It all reflects the new learnings, techniques, experiences of our conductors. Especially with UST. The performance of Chua-ay for the 1995 Tolosa competition was WAY KNOCK OUT as compared to when they recorded it back in 1993. So proud to hear all the applause...the audience must have been spell binded to hear that performance!

ACGC...ah! Now here's a choir that has really worked hard! All their efforts have really produced a special sound. I just wish that more of their competition cds be heard (Marktoberdorf, Tolosa, etc). I have to close my mouth whenever I listen to their competitions performances....

I guess, reading my postings from almost a year ago, I guess I know must say a true fan cannot pick a favorite choir, local or foreign. You can never know what a particular group will teach/show you...

To a budding choral fan, my unsolicited advice: Dont close your mind...just listen and listen and listen. No one will stop you from criticizing a certain choir, sound, interpretation, conductor or performance. Have favorites, but never ever let that prevent you from listening to new choirs or new repertoire! Be sure that you enjoy the music!

Hahaha...eto na naman ako nagruruminate...bored eh...and almost unemployed (again!).

Im gonna start naming my "must listen and get a copy list" of choral cd recordings...wala lang, this will be ongoing. para maiba rin atmosphere ng thread na ito...share din kayo...

1. MADZ 1989 CD...

This is a prized cd...rare among non madz members. Has the GLORIA of Cayabyab, TINIG NG LUPA by Federizon, PRAYER OF ST FRANCIS Not by Allan Pote, ELI! ELI! of Bardos, ITALIAN SALAD, and other Gems. The quissential Filipino choir at its best! The sheer virtuosity, force, heart...everything that is NOT FROM THE EUROPEAN SCHOOL of choral performance (well not entirely :) ). Basta! Im running out of superlatives...so just take my word for it. If you dont have it, borrow at all cost!

2. MADZ Christmas CD (circa 1987-89?)

Not the yellow cd released by BMG, this one is for me a lot better kasi very loose and "rustic" ang pagkanta. As in again, quissentially Filipino sound...lalo na yung PASKO NA NAMAN at NOCHE BUENA. The ROMMEL PET is amazing, not perfect, but who cares? ITS AN AMAZING CD. Not commercially available na, but at all cost, try to listen to it.

3. RIAS Kammerchor Poulenc motets

THE EUROPEAN PROFESSIONAL CHOIR. Difficult repertoire but sung with much panache yet very tight and secured intonation and attacks. Choirmasters everywhere will indeed envy the dead on attacks of this choir's sopranos...those B flats! (I read that somewhere, sorry, pero totoo talaga). CDs are still available in tower...get this kahit di nyo pa dig yung songs...it's a great thing!

The Netherlands Chamber Choir under Eric Ericson is also fine. But its another story...I'l continue na lang in my next post...

Grabe, Cris...if you read all this im sure sabihin mo ang daldal ko talaga! Hehehehe :D

Goodluck to all!

anyone here who can post informations regarding the PWU Choir? as i know, robert is here, if he happen to read this..could you post anything about your group...(this choir is really promising)

UPSA with their acquired confidence (beacuse of arrezo) and a little more training will complement their natural "european" thingie sound that will definitely help them in the coming EGP in Debrecen, i think. Pero i heard from my friends (residing in gorizia) that EGP daw will be at Arrezo, if that is the case, its an advantage for our UPSA.

sino naman kaya ang kukuha ng spotlight next year? would it be a rigodon of the more-famous choirs or will it be the year of a new-in-the-circle choir!?

Somehow, I dont know...im kinda losing faith in choir competions, especially as a benchmark for choral performances. There just seems to be damn so many intangibles that really skews the real meaning and beauty of choral singing...

Sometimes even, a mediocre choir will win a major prize and the results can be disadvantageous....either nagiging sobrang feeling at walang bukang bibig kundi nanalo sa ganito or much worst, they stop improving na....

im not saying this with a particular group in mind...I heard a recording of certain "famous" filipino choir...much praised here in the pages of PEx...but i cant believe their competion performance in Europe just a few years back...they won several accolades in this particular competition...anyhow, if you had the chance to hear that disc, you'd be laughing out loud. German diction between sections were butchered...i.e. yung german ng soprano vastly different sa german ng basses...yup may puso ang kanta. pero ma heart attack naman yung listener kasi lahat ng piyesa ginawang sobrang bilis, especially yung ethnic set, para maging exciting...and that federizon tinig ng lupa...for crying out loud, the soprano at the end...what the hell was she doing? I swear walang ganun sa piyesa??? I felt they had to take her to the hospital after the performance...it was unbelievable!

They'll email me and say "so what?? we won best (mixed) choir in that competition!"...see?? competitions can vastly mislead even the best choirs into false beliefs...

Flame me for being honest...I just cant take it!

I'm a fan of this choir and I listen well to all their concerts. I dont agree with all their interpretations as much as I applaud all the wonderful things they bring to their music making. But that CD was plain Friday the 13th!

And some really good choirs can lose in competitions that they really deserve to win...especially heart breaking when we follow the rules and our european adversaries dont...and we still lose... ah such is the dynamics of any competitive event....

In sum: WINNING IN COMPETITIONS IS NOT THE BEST BENCHMARK OF EXCELLENCE IN CHORAL SINGING. Bad choirs win and good choirs lose...for the dumbest of reasons....

I feel very much like a witch! Forgive me for my now! Ngayon lang araw na ito talaga! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Very true! No matter what judges tell you, competitions, not just choral ones are prone to bias/prejudice. All the more if the participants and the judges belong to the same circle or company (u know what I mean). Actually, same with auditions. But that's just how it is. And most of the time, the praises if you do get them, are just chika, to feed our egotism. All artists have this in one form or another I believe; otherwise, you're not a true artist. Wag magdeny! However, the upside to competitions is that it developes character. :D :D :D

I feel very much like a witch! Forgive me for my now! Ngayon lang araw na ito talaga! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

And you sound like a witch, really! Hahaha! Pero seriously kapatid, if you lose faith in choir competitions, you'd just be negating, like, the efforts of some choirs who REALLY DESERVED their winnings. I personally believe that ALL competitions have a certain level of bias. Simply because the judges are HUMANS and not some kind of invented measuring instruments. Siyempre, dear, its very difficult to quantify excellent singing. Sure, may standards. Pero choral singing demands much more than technical excellence. It demands HEART. EMOTIONS. And the ability to move listeners; in the case of competitions, the judges. Kaya nga food for da soul, dibala? Kung yung soul nga mahirap i-prove, yung pagkain pa kaya nya (corny ko talaga!)? :p

Also, what is being judged in choral competitions is the PARTICULAR PERFORMANCE of the competing choir DURING the contest proper and NOT the ability of the choir to be consistent with their singing throughout their choral life. Di ba kaya nga may kasabihan tayo na one is only as good as his LAST performance?

I also know this for a fact kasi napagdaanan ko rin yan. And if only for this, we should appreciate their efforts. Por Ejemplo, pag wagi ang Madrigal Singing Action Singers Glee Club Chorale, di naman sila kikilalanin abroad by their name.

YOU BRING HONOR TO THE FILIPINO and for that i'm grateful. Whether established ang contest or not. THANK YOU MADZ, ACGC, UST SINGERS, UPSA, CC, DE LA SALLE, PWU, at kung sino pa diyan na na-forget ko. REGARDLESS OF THE CRITICISMS, BILIB AKO SA GALING NYONG LAHAT. I know how it is to compete, to win, and to be criticized. Been there, done that.

To Monteverdi, peace, man. You are a living example that freedom of expression still exists in this country. Mabuhay ka kapatid. :)

monteverdi,

you can not keep out bias judging in competitions and others, same is true on what you have just posted...really biased.(dont be surprised if you'd get some bad reactions) interpretations are in the conductors hand, that's why we have a term re-interpretations. if you feel that you dont like one's inter (or i should say) re-interpretation, then that's your feeling, not everyones'.

choral singing is a relative term. the relativity of it stretches towards the longest, weirdest, best possible idea you'd ever think of in this discipline. so YOU CAN NOT really assume some things or deny some things.

i do not agree with the idea of ' bad choir win competitions, good choir doesn't.'

i just agree with the fact that there's a group, who made a mess on their concert, and it happened to be thier special one. a group who is trying to fit-in the winning-choir's circle but just end up trailing at the end of the tail of some new-budding group. that's a fact. tsk tsk! bumping.

i do not agree with the idea of ' bad choir win competitions, good choir doesn't.'

i just agree with the fact that there's a group, who made a mess on their concert, and it happened to be thier special one. a group who is trying to fit-in the winning-choir's circle but just end up trailing at the end of the tail of some new-budding group. that's a fact. tsk tsk! bumping.

first of all, i want say i appreciate your comments. its a discussion forum talaga! :)

Interpretation is an age old debate. Especially in music, maraming disagreements on tempo, tone, mood, etc.ect. Some famous conductors, choral and orchestral, became famous for their inter- or reinterpretation of classical works....

My point is minsan naman talaga, out of good taste yung pagkanta sa work. It really would disappoint the composer especially if his intentions (which are written down in the score) are not followed. If he wanted a certain passage to be sung by an octet, eh di dapat solo octet, not the ripieno of 30 singers! diba? And really, my post concerned my views which I am sharing with all of you guys, and I'm ready to accept the fact na most of you wont agree (there are posts here na di rin ako agree). Its really my own opinion. And, if such is the case...I cannot help but really be biased, because at the opposite end of my spectrum is someone who totally disagrees with my points. Well, the good thing is may space din dito for their views which all of us can read...

Anyhow, some of our choirs are 'misguided' kasi it seems iba nga ang understanding ng conductors nila sa mga works na kinakanta nila. OK yun on one hand kasi it promotes artistry, resourcefulness, creativity, and just plain breaths new life into the repertoire. But the downside is that in the pursuit of something new and something that would make his choir standout, maraming dinadagdag sa score ang conductor (or omittions of a composer's instructions). Have you heard this famous choir that added animal sounds to Federizon's Tinig ng Lupa? (Competition yun ha!) Or this choir that executed an accelerando in the fugue part of this Brahms work, na sa score wala namang ganun?? Baket? What was the purpose of that? The discerning listener tuloy can't appreciate the beauty of the counterpoint kasi ang labo na sa sobrang bilis, it became soupy. Or yung group na naglalagay ng obliggato sa mga kanta nila (dirait on??). I mean, Im a conductor too, and somehow I feel the need to give the composer some measure of respect and I wont 'rework' his composition to make my choir will stand out. I hope you also consider my point.

Im the first one to be really excited pag maganda ang interpretation ng director. There are choir conductors who have a feel for shading and dynamics...na in their hands gumaganda at lumalabas talaga ang meaning ng text...sadly, the hits are less than the misses.

Others naman, like me, think ok lang kasi Bach naman was inspired in one part by the French and all their famous dance tunes during that time...see?? Even famous conductors are subject to criticism... I say art is really a RELATIVE thing...and I agree with you on that!

Well, that's all...peace Fujitsu...just write down your reply. Have no time na to edit my thoughts, much more to reply to the other posts...to Zion and M_lover...next time.

P.S.

Pahabol lang since I am on the issue. Sana tigilan na ng mag arrangers dyan ang pag-a-adapt ng choral works na may accompaniment (especially orchestral) into a cappella. Lagi na lang biktima si John Rutter! Hindi a cappella ang Magnificat niya! at please...meron ng a cappella na 'The Lord Bless and Keep You', yung kay Lutkin...bakit yung kay Rutter, merong accompaniment, ginawan ng a cappella arrangement...please! stop the insanity....hahahaha

Monteverdi, agree ako sa yo na some works are better left alone as they are. Tinig ng Lupa na may animal sounds?!?! Totoo ba itich? Over yung kumanta nun, ha?!?

May alam din akong VERY WELL PRAISED CHOIR here at Pex.

I have their 1995 or 1996 tape at ang ilay gandangan nila, SOBRA SA BILIS! Ang ending tuloy, parang ni-rape ang mga sopranos while they shout their final notes.

TARGET POINT: THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A PERFECT CHOIR.

Yun lang po mga kapatid. (Bato-bato sa langit...) :teehee:

To Monteverdi it may concern chuvalis,

Hoy Monteverdi, a.k.a Boy Abunda, magtago ka na BAKLA, I’ve been trying to research for your identity, now I know kung sino ka, alam mo lola, buking ka na. Masyado kang maganda at sufer peeling!

Tanong? Ano ba muna ang boses mo ha Inday Garutay? Maganda ba? Maganda ka ba? Ya right, you’re such a witch to the tenth power. Ang daming nananahimik sa amin but you’re way down below the belt.

Ano ba munang ipinagmamalaki mo, yang sang tambak mong CD collections? Bakit, ganyan ka ba kumanta, is that how your choir sings? May choir ka ba? Ano naman ang sound ng choir mo? Can you apply everything you know about choral music?

Sasabihin mo na winning in the competitions abroad is not a benchmark that a particular choir is excellent. Sino ka ba? Ang galing naman ng opinion mo, dinaig mo pa si Werner Pfaff, Andrea Veneracion, Joel Navarro, Eric Ericsson, Gary Graden, Jerry Jordan, Vaclovas Augustinus, Fidel Calalang, Stojan Kuret, Oscar Boada, Gene Brooks, Jonathan Velasco, Lim Yau, Vytaustas Miskinis, Ed Manguiat, Ingemar Mansson, Nestor Zadoff, Elizabeth Ramsey, Matutina, Tya Pusit, Bella Flores etc. etc. etc., echetherah!

Why the heck do you think these choirs under these conductors have to compete? Of course you wouldn’t know why ‘cos you don’t belong to any of those that compete abroad.

You see, we all are striving to be excellent in our own humble ways, to become real artists pero kung may isang kagaya mo in any of these choirs, tama nga lang na nandyan ka sa grupo mo ngayon.

Get real mama! You want perfection? Sige, show us that your group sings perfectly. Show us that you sing perfectly as well.

Bato-bato chuvalis.

Mabuhay ang Ateneo Glee Club, Philippine Madrigal Singers, UP Singing Ambassadors and UST Singers for a job well done.

Hahahahahhahaha, do I sound like a witch? Baka gawin mong 10 counts kundi ipakukulong kita! Kamusta na nga pala ang show mong The BUZZZZZZ!

Keep singing mga kafathid!

BOW!

Yours truly,

Nora Aunor

HI ZION:

HMMMM... I only know of one choir that has a recording from 95 but I'm not sure we are talking about the same choir :) I wouldn't think so coz the choir I know with the recordings of Ili Ili and Ilay Gandangan used those songs in almost all of their competitions in Europe in 1995 for the Folkloric Category. I know that in all the Folkloric Categories they participated in, they ended up being First. So I don't think we are talking about the same group.

Another thing, if we are thinking of the same group, it would be weird to actually mistake their Ilay Gandangan in the recording(LIVE) since their conductor arranged that Ethnic piece which gives their interpretation all the more credible don't you think. I actually have never hear Ilay Gandangan performed any better than this conductor's group can. You should listen to the World Symposium on Choral Music 1999 CD where this choir hit the pinnacle of the Ilay Gandangan piece.. adding a variation to the piece as specified by the arranger(their conductor).

Ili Ili on the other hand can be interpreted differently in this case. I heard their interpretation and it actually made me feel sad. It evoked not a simple lullabye but a dramatic lullabye... images of a mother singing to her "dead" child came into mind as i listened to the groups interpretation. So you see, its all about taste. Just because the piece was started with the descant in pp doesn't mean it can't be altered(i just don't know if it was clearly specified in the piece that the obligato part is suppose to be pianissimo)

No pissed just stating a point. :D

montiverdi, what can you say about a choir who sang a famous 'oyayi' (which was arranged by g.hernandez for acapella singing) and sang it with a grandioso PIANO accompaniment when in fact that it must be sung in piano mode!? baka na mis-interpret nila na pag [p gagamitan ng piano! baka naman himatayin ang pinapatulog na bata! chakalin!

i believe about the saying 'choir is as good as their last performance', and i got to saw this group during their last over-hyped concert and it was a pure chakalin show.

I would've wished you hadn't excluded other notable choirs who kicked a*s in Europe i.e. Himig Singers ng Davao, De La Salle University Chorale and the PWU Chorale who I heard got 3rd Place in the Mixed Category in Cantonigros this year. Correct me if I'm wrong, did they beat the UPSA in this Category? or did UPSA fail to join or chose not to join the Mixed Choir Category(which I find highly unlikely)...

I actually noticed one thing when I saw the winnings of the UPSA this year. It seemed like they were after another group by joining the competitions the other group joined as well(in 1995 - Cantonigros [where it was spread that UPSA sadly lost to the other] and 1999 - the J. Brahms Competition). I just find that a bit too coincidental knowing that UPSA and the other group has something to .. er... resolve.

Yeah and I've watched that concert too. My friends and I just can't help it and we were really laughing when this certain choir sang this "oyayi" in a GRANDIOSO MODE. But in fairness, the last song was good. Oh well...

I wonder if this was the show/concert that also featured a fabulous arrangement of a Prince of Egypt tune.... (hint hint).. because as far as i can remember that got me to my feet. Was this the show that showcased an awesome interpretation of Shenandoah and a very soothing Dirait On... ???

to North_Halsted... thanks for what seems like defending the Chorale pero ok lang sila (im not part of the choir anymore)... they know where they stand... the group is NOT composed by a bunch of amateurs...

*sigh*.... :(

my gosh, yes, i saw a very soothing-clean sound of the UST Singers when they sang Shenandoah, and the very beautiful- tranquil interpretation of the Ateneo Glee Club of Dirait-on.

these 2 great choirs sang that famous OYAYI of Hernandez and they gave different but very good RE-interpretations, BUT they never inculcated a PIANO accompaniment (with a grandioso mode) into a quiet lullaby for babies.

ironically, some choirs out there still have guts to re-interpret something and dared to sing some songs (that the more-capable-elite choirs have sung) but never gave justice to the songs. comparing can not be cut out.

in anyway, UPSA has the spotlight now, don't spoil their glorious moments right now coz they deserve it. don't go back to the past
to remember those infamous [i]duelo[/b] but be jelous of what they have proven! har har! cause they have just proven they are more worth it...

mediocrity is greening.

Competitions are fate driven and luck determined. For instances where Philippine choirs have placed well in competitions it definitely shows how well the batch of that group is at the time they competed. I commend UPSA for their winnings this year, no doubt about it. I wasn't spoiling their glorious moments, just getting info and getting opinions.

I can't be jealous because I am not part of a choir. So that leaves jealousy out of the picture. I just believe, however, that until a Filipino group reaches the pinnacle of success that the Philippine Madrigal Singers has reached they are still part of the pool of aspirants(even if they have been qualified to compete at the EGP).

I can't believe what this thread has degenerated into again...

Anyway, it's just sad that there are still choristers out there who bring other choirs down instead of raising all Filipino choirs.

I am a member of the DLSU Chorale, and of course it hurts to read such comments... but I always look forward to hearing comments about not just our own performances but on others as well, so that we can all learn. I just wish they're said more constructively.

Anyway, in defense to the "oyayi" issue, it was sung in a grandioso mode because it was meant that way by the arranger. If I am not mistaken, I think he wanted it to be a sort of tribute to his mother, not really an interpretation of a mother putting a child to sleep (I agree that such a grandioso interpretation would have sent the baby crying all night).

And another thing, I didn't find anything wrong with what Monteverdi said (that supposedly ignited this whole tirade of negative comments all over again) to warrant such a negative reaction. I don't think he was generalizing when he said that "bad choirs win and good choirs lose"... Of course that's not always the case, siguro may exceptions lang. Naaalala ko tuloy yung case ng ACGC when they lost in this year's grand prix. I absolutely loved their sound, and I was almost sure they were going to win, pero instead a children's choir won daw. I asked one of them if they were really really good... hindi naman daw, tapos over time pa sila. Baka it just so happened that the choir was Hungarian, and the Grand Prix was held in Debrecen.

Personally, I never tried "inserting" our choir into the so-called "winners circle". I guess what some of us was trying to do was to make people stop belittling our own achievements. True, we may have never won a Grand Prix or such, unlike the others, but it doesn't mean that other people can just push us around. I respect the other choirs' achievements, and I am totally proud of them, and I still wish all Filipino choirs continuous excellence in the craft, with or without competitions.

Yaiks! What happened to this thread? Hmm. . . Anyway, here's my personal outlook...

Choirs may perhaps be said to exist to enhance the supremacy or degree of sung music, let the strengths and weaknesses of individual singers to be melded into an acceptable homogenous sound, present an idiosyncratic harmonic or tonal character that cannot be provided by solo voices and provide a vehicle for singers that allows them to produce pleasant music as a cluster. But, NOT all these objectives are at hand in every choir or in every choral performance. However, they all contribute to the importance of choirs as musical entities. Some of us may have difficulty accepting with the interpretations done by some of the finest Philippine choral groups. Why? This is because all these misapprehensions, that some of us have, take place from the actuality that people will, and for all time, insist upon looking in choral music for something that is not there. I think the most imperative thing for us is to be acquainted with what the choral group has something for us, what the piece expresses, and what the composer had in mind when he composed it. And as ThË Zëá|öT, I’m at this juncture to be contented about choral music for the grounds that it has an entity of its own apart from anything that it may advocate to some things.

Kudos to ALL great Philippine choirs who have won and represented and who will be representing our country in any global competition. May you serve as stimulating groups to others to achieve their reverie.

Of course there are other Philippine choirs other than those four that i've mentioned in my first post. Anjan ang Himig Singers from Davao. I've seen them in 1990 and 1993 when they won sa NAMCYA. I was so proud of them when they made it sa Cantonigros a few years ago sa Europe. They're really good. PWU is also making raves in Europe this year. What happened nga pala sa Tolosa nila? UP Concert Chorus, well they have proven their worth for almost 40 years, mabuhay kayo! And of course, the DLSU who has consistently won top prizes in Europe, well, what do you expect, they're under the "King of Competitions"! Let's all watch out and support for other choirs who are just in our midst waiting for their turn to make it big, they're world class too in evey sense of the word; like the Pansol Choir, Chorus Paulinus, PNU Chorale, Montserrat Choir (San Beda High School Glee Club Alumni), choirs from Bacolod and Iloilo, at marami pang iba. Hay nakuna matata, PEACE to ALL and keep singing!

Nagulat naman ako sa reactions...long live democracy and freedom of speech!

To those who gave very personal (i.e unfair) comments...you are entitled to those...

There are two people who use the monteverdi log-in. One is the real witch...

I didnt say competitions invalidates the efforts of our choirs. In fairness to all the conductors and choraliers out there, of course, all yours fans and supporters laud your efforts...

Maam Veneracion once said that she wanted to join competitions in Europe to see if her group (the Madz) was progressing in the right direction...

take that quote and think about it.

Ano pa ba??

The quote "Bad choirs win and good choirs lose" ekk...that came from one very famous english conductor...may ari rin siya ng collegium records...i cant remember the interview...goldberg magazine....

This forum does not degenerate into anything. In defense naman, when I discuss or point out things, I always strive to be OBJECTIVE and not personal/below the belt. I never name groups or conductors because I am not in the habit of insulting others. One famous conductor I know, I tell him straight all my comments, especially what I dislike, and he really appreciates them. Sport lang...everyone wants to improve their craft and they highly value objective criticism.

People who have read the pex in its 30+ page history would see that i've always been high praises and supportive of all our choirs. Some newcomers seem to take me out of context...well, ok lang...

Just point out your views and let everyone read. I dont post here just to support my favorite choir (meron ba?) and to put down another...im not paid advertisement...just expressing MY views as a fan...

otherwise...

On one side, I'm happy that the thread is evolving into a more dynamic, FREER venue where birds of the same feather (choir-lovers all!) could exchange views without worrying about "choral discrimination" (you know, parang MADZ singers as better critics than the others, pero EXAMPLE lang ito!).

I believe everybody HAS A POINT THAT IS WORTHY TO BE HEARD, regardless of race, class, or creed (and school!). And I thank everybody in this thread for actively participating in the fora, whether volatile or not. You see, I also LEARN from what others have to say. And for that, THANK YOU.

So sorry if I ever "hurt" some pipol with that one particular remark I made about a certain choir's taped performance. I still stand by what I said (because I think I wrote it without stating it as a fact but as my own opinion). Although it made me realize that writing blind items (as a significant number of us in this thread have been doing for as long as I can remember) is greatly at risk of being misunderstood. Siguro mas cute dapat ang pagkasabi ko next time, hehe. North_Halsted, I think we're not thinking about the same choir, and Genius 101, it's not yours I'm talking about. ChinoR, yes, I believe in the greatness of the "best" choirs in our country. But that doesn't mean that I don't have to "comment" on them anymore. Alam mo tita, sa bawat papuri, may kasamang "comment." dibala, wala ngang perfect choir?

But even if you ever "discover" the choir I was talking about, I believe it wouldn't make them less of a choir than they think they are. Mine is just my opinion and it is, well, an OPINION. Some might agree with me and some won't. But this is precisely the BEAUTY of this thread: its HONESTY and its FREEDOM. And I stand by the sincerity of all others who bravely expressed their points here.

Siguro lang, some pipol here want more DIPLOMACY and TACT in this thread, and I FULLY RESPECT THEM.

Nevertheless, for all that's been said and done, I still love this exciting, and thought-provoking thread and ALL who participate in it! The advertisers, the critics, the "teachers", the "students", the "warriors", and "the peacemakers". Mabuhay tayong lahat!

Darkness cannot exist without Light. And life won't be life as we know it if we only hear the good, safe stuff.

PEACE MGA KAPATID! :)

Nora Aunor

When I read your post...sabi ko wag ko na lang pansinin...sabagay medyo emotional ka nga nung time na sinulat mo ito...

pero funny talaga eh! hahaha!

1. Im not the one who looks like Boy Abunda...iba yun! Im not from IMUS! Your description totally doesnt fit me.

2. BAKLA?? please...you really have the wrong person. hahaha. No offense to my gay friends, but these guy/girl/? totally got it wrong eh...

3. You're obviously a greenhorn to these discussions noh? I dont have a tambak of cds. Kasi, if you were reading all the past pages, I mentioned nasunog sila lahat...kasi witch nga ako eh... hahaha! Besides, kung may natira...binigay ko na.

4. Hiniram kung kanino-nino? May masama ba dun? I'm so generous to all who approach me to borrow cds...Eh I've lost so many cds nga kc pinaharam ko at di na ibinabalik...

5. YOUTH CHOIR? what YOUTH CHOIR are you saying?? In Imus? Eh taga Metro Manila ako!

6. Marcus Creed...not Markus Creed. Get your facts straight. Besides, he's not the conductor of RIAS KAMMERCHOR na. He stepped down early this year. Why use that as your login name?

7. I dont remember borrowing anything from anyone here in PEx...much less backbite somebody...

8. Magaling? As fujistsu said...it's a relative term...

Wag kang mapikon ha! I know peace naman eh. Syempre Im also entitled to refute your comments. You have the wrong person talaga.

Peace :)

ps...dont get angry at the "wrong guy"...he is not the owner of the Monteverdi login...ok? Besides, dont get angry! We are just in here to share our views...peace ulit :)

montiverdi, what can you say about a choir who sang a famous 'oyayi' (which was arranged by g.hernandez for acapella singing) and sang it with a grandioso PIANO accompaniment when in fact that it must be sung in piano mode!? baka na mis-interpret nila na pag [p gagamitan ng piano! baka naman himatayin ang pinapatulog na bata! chakalin!

i believe about the saying 'choir is as good as their last performance', and i got to saw this group during their last over-hyped concert and it was a pure chakalin show.

you started it all, now you suffer.

what can i say? hmmm...

Yung kinanta nila, hindi arrangement ni hernandez. I guess it was written down in the program notes kung sino arranger. I know the arrangement and talagang intended with piano accompaniment yon....and was a tribute to the arranger's mother (as stated before).

as for your other opinions...well, ok!

ok? :)
