CHOIRMASTER & HARANGKING:
Kamusta ang Vespers performance ninyo? Maganda ba?
At next month eh mgkikita na naman kami sa New Orleans for the Mardi Gras. :)
May naborrow akong cd sa NY Public Library, parang chorale works of students of Messiaen. Feel mo ba yan? Irerecord ko for you kung feel mo.
O, syaron cuneta. Unya ulit.

HELLO BOCCELLI:
Are you in Chicago right now?
Also, I don't know which Virgin Records you were referring to in one of your posts but the Virgin Records here in Manhattan (the one in Times Square, I think yun ang pinakamalaki, hindi ba?) eh okay lang ang chorale selection. Come to think about it, hindi ko naman pala alam ang mga chorale cds na hinahanap ninyo.
When I was checking the CD stores here in NYC kasi, I was always looking for a CD recording of the Swedish Radio Choir because according to CHOIRMASTER, they are the best Prefessional Choir in the world (may isa pang reason kung bakit Swedish Radio choir lang ang hanap ko pero napakaraan na yun so hindi na dapat banggitin... CHINKY, ikanga ni HARANGKING). But since may PCC na, baka second na lang ang Swedish Radio Choir. CHARING!!!!
O, Zsa-zsa padilla, till next thread.

Hey Dina Sumising
I was part of the De La Salle University Chorale since 95-99 so kasama ako nung nagtour sila nung 99.
Anyhooo, yes i was talking about that Virgin Records.. yung nagmumura ang sign nila!
By the way... ANG GALING NG PCC!!!!! Grabe daw sa galing!!!
To put it in the words of a friend of mine who watched.. the PCC sounds like the Best European Choir(eastern man o western) with a Filipino flare... BIBO Ever!!!
CONGRATULATIONS TO CHOIRMADER!!!
Favor naman Dina oh.. can you get me a couple of beads from Mardi Gras....
please.. pretty please with matching cresc. na obligato!
FOR THE SUPREME DIVAS AND DIVOS of Philippine Choral Music,
GALING TALAGA!!!

Kaloka...
MONTEVERDI: At last, nagkita na rin tayo... may utang pa yata ako sa yong Xmas gift...
Went to TOWER Records FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER... sa Glorietta ekk... buyola ng Robert Shaw ekk na with the Barber Agnus Dei and Arvo Part Magnificat... haven't listened to it yet.

Charito Solis!!!
You know what? I haven't heard you guys perform but I remember JohnnyBeBad telling me before na maganda raw ang tunog ninyo. Gegetch ako ng bonggang beads for you.

DINA SUMISING: Rent a recording outfit?!
Siguro gusto kong ibalik yung era ng live performances, yung tipong you just have to be there to witness it, no recordings, just the magic of the music for that time only, no repeats (as in recording of the event). Masyado na tayong nawiwili sa Cd ekk, we don't take the effort anymore to go to live performances. It doesn't capture any of the magic the Madz have during the actual performance... yung connecshyen nila sa audience, yung feeling mo na kumakanta sila para sa yo lang, very personal ang dating. Wala yan sa CD, ang mapapansin mo lang ay lahat ng technical faults: intonation, balance, interpretation, recording level, audience noise (or absence of it, as in studio recording), vibrato faults, etc...
Binky will leave us, goes na rin siya sa U.S., to work.

I could've given a longer and more extravagant review ekk.
Dina Sumising... hi. salamat at magkakaroon na rin ako ng N'Awlins beadies!!... if you want to listen to a couple of recordings and performances by the DLSU Chorale, i posted two songs sa Yahoo Briefcase ko. Download mo yung Mamayog Akun(Version 2) and Singet Dem Herrn ein Neues Leid. Yung Mamayog Batch 95 tapos yung Singet Batch 99. Alam kong mahirap icompare kasi magkaibang klase ng kanta pero para sa iyo I'll post a recording na classical ng Batch 95.
here's the link: http://briefcase.yahoo.com/chiuman98
sana mapakinggan mo.
SOPRANINA: hey you... hindi ko pa rin na ge-getcha ang CDs na sabi mong maba-buy ko from you... :( send mo na lang ako ng MP3 ng mga songs kahit isa lang.. yung pinaka favorite mo... please... im dying to hear new songs!!!
Have good week guys, gals and gels...

To Choirmaster
It was nice to finally meet you...i've seen you in concert ilang beses na pero never had the chance to approach you. Nung Saturday nga sobrang harassed na ako cuz I thought I was late, hindi ko kasi alam kung saan ang San Beda...mag-isa lang akong pumunta doon. Did you know that several members of the Chorale were there, nandun kami sa harap! opposite your minidisc!
I was telling everyone (na malas at hindi nakapanood) yesterday that I've had about 3 or 4 recordings ng Rachmaninoff Vespers, pero di ko talaga siya ma fully appreciate...hindi ko alam kung boring talaga yung work o di ko type ang interpretation (kahit yung Russian choirs). But last Saturday evening, opening chords pa lang nung first canticle (Priiditye, Poklonimsia) nakilabot na ako...ang ganda po ng tunog!!!
I guess yon na nga siguro yung sinasabi mo na "live" experience...that connection with an audience. For most of the concert, I was closing my eyes or just plain staring up at the vaulted frescoes of the chapel, relishing the sound of your choir...ahhh!
There are still so many things to highlight...pero yung surprised talaga ako is the shadings...yung pag handle ng dynamics. Parang...well, napaka Filipino! I didn't get to hear the ending of the Nynye Otpushtayeshi though...
Well, tama na yung ekek...look forward na lang ako sa Zadok the Priest! Hehe, favorite ko sa Monteverdi Choir yan :) Nga pala, dumating ba yung Russian Ambassador? I also met Dave the Welsh guy...he's a nice chap! hehehe :)
At ano yung Christmas gift? malapit na mag valentines ah! hahaha

There's a song there called Farmer Song its sung by this vivocious Chorus from Korea, too bad wala akong recording ng group singing a classical piece kasi ang galing ng mga hitad!.. bibo tumira ng lines and pinong pino kahit na walong milyon ang dami nila.. hehehe
pero they really are good.. even though may solo ang song i noticed na hindi sumusobra ang tira ng mga soloista and pino yung tira ng soprano!
kakawindang lang!..
hey do i give you my email so you can contact me pag nakuha mo na ako ng Beadies... :)
Choirmaster... alam mo, sobrang dami sanang gustong lumapit sayo from Chorale kaya lang ang dami na daw masyadong lumapit kaya di na sila nakasingit and you looked too tired daw. Pero they were soooooooooooooooooobrang impressed...
http://www.chicagochoralartists.org
please tell me kung ok yung tunog nila.
Sa inyong lahat.. have a great weekend..

Nalowka ako sa iyong mga thoughts on recorded performances. You got a point pero meron pa ring mga fans na nakakapagrecord ng inyong performances kahit pa sa walkman lang at meron pa ring legacy na maiiwan kahit sa chakang recording. At paano naman kaming hindi makakapanood? Sorry na lang ba???? Para yatang hindi makatarungan yun!
About the recording outfit, wala ka bang friendita who does this kind of stuff para freemity or sponsored?
Hennyway, CONGRATS uli at pakisabi kay BINKY na hello from me at saan ba syang parte ng US mababase? At salamat ng advance sa recording. hehehe.

Hey! Nice meeting you...thanks for the real group sampler. Magaling sila at inventive! I like them! You should listen to take 6 kasi their harmony is jazzier...as in polychords, quartal chord shapes...mga voicings na AMaj9 flat5th add13! hehehe :) Basta magaling rin sila and you'll enjoy their sound! Buy their live album! Jazz Gospel yung repertoire nila...they arrange afro-american spirituals in the jazz vein...sayang, if i didnt lose my cds i would have lent them to you.
BTW, did you like the Renaissance collection? Galing nung disc no. 2, yung mga motets noh?
I loved the King's College Rach Vespers. Everyone's been telling me it's too Anglican and English. Pero ****! Ang ganda ng tunog! (Pero wala silang sinabi sa PCC nung Sabado, hahaha!...Viva Jojo und der Philippinische Kammerchor! Danke für die Musik! Ich bin aufgeregt über Ihrem folgenden konzert!)
See yah this weekend!

Actually,
Hmmmmm.. kelan mo siya na-download, kasi I posted the songs that the organizers chose to include in the WSCM CD(double). They were Dungdunguen Canto and Ilay Gandangan. For the 95 Batch, there were 21 singers, for our Batch(99) there were 19 singers.
As in... tipong, finaflat namin yung mga notes kasi major imbey na kami at late na late na eh sing pa rin ng sing!!!.... ang OA nga eh.. kaka inis, i wish we understood na that recording was going to be there for life(as in recorded na ang pagkaimey namin)
Oh well... But the WSCM is a good indication of our sound pero I feel na the best sound ever na naproduce namin eh hindi na record...
Email ko would be f5117@hotmail.com
Would you know if it is possible ot put into MP3 songs that are in Tape?
DLSU CHORALE 99...
Pwedend paki convert into CD or MP3 yung Slovenia performances natin para naman marinig ko... please :)

Oh hello again unpleasant peasants (and fellow pleasant pheasants) of the land of CORALITA...(pangalan ng concert ng choir ko sa Martignacco, Italy...walang biro...ang baladge!!)
I'm Johann Sebastian BACK!!!
Labin-2 (as in Zwanzig?) na ang mga kapahinahan nitong kalandian na 'to? VONGGA!! Mabuhay ang mga utash!
Yes, the mood encompassing our country is sombre. Maraming kaguluhan sa bayan, but hey, we're still alive aren't we? Kaya let's just enjoy whatever we can still enjoy.
Welsh, as usual, lovely na naman ng Vespers and for the second time, I felt very Kremlinized. Pati yung weather na feel ko na naman sa San Beda Chapel...must be the vibratos, hehehe.
I think I saw some of you ppl (of De La Salle).
*** nga pala, naabutan ko ang oh-so-heavenly-operatic beauty ni PINKY MARQUEZ sa kanyang pag-awit ng the Light of a Million Mornings under the statue of Maria and in front of the jillions of ppl. Feel na feel namin ni SOPRANINA kanina ang kanyang mataray na voce, in its glorious pop-to-classical shifting. Pwede talaga siyang mag-Cio-Cio San o di kaya Norma or Isolde....CHARING...

Panahon ni Noel Bugarin... arranged a concert for them in Berlin, when I was a student there. My brother was in that batch, si Raphy Velasco. Happily married to Portia (DLSU Chorale din!) and they have one son, Paulo (future DLSU Chorale member!). Both work with BPI (ex-FEBTC) sa ITG.

buti ka pa, nakapag-EDSA. May I rehearse PCC tonight no, with the matching kalahati lang ng choir ang dumating. Kaloka. Yung iba may harang, yung iba nasa EDSA. Oh well, I couldn't postpone the rehearsal, kasi alam mo namang once a week lang ang beauty namin mag-rehearse.

I TRIED to learn German because of JS Bach.
About what? Sige email kita soon. Brokers and investors are sobrang optimistic!
I dont sing with any choir. I have my group na tinuturuan sa parish. SSA ensemble siya puro college.
Ok dun sa Goethe...raming books tungkol kay Bach! at pwedeng borrow CD (puro naxos!). Tambay kasi ako dun one time eh...

Hello everybody! I just want to invite you to watch the Auit Chamber Chamber Vocal Ensemble in concert on Feb 12, 2001 at the Aldaba Hall of UP Diliman at 7 pm. We will be singing songs by contemporary Filipino composers such as Chino Toledo, the conductor of the choir, Robin Estrada, Katz Trangco, Christine Muyco and other Asean composers. If you haven't heard of us yet, we are a relatively new choir that specializes on 20th century (and 21st century na rin) music by living composers. Ours is something new and interesting, so please watch naman if you can. Tickets are availabe at the entrance of the Aldaba Hall at a very cheap price of P30. Support us naman!

the PCC propagates..still along the classical path..pero itrils can be hip-hop, commercial, jazzy, blues name it
By the way, I am from the Bay Area, it is around this month
that we hold the CASA regional finals kumbaga..competition dito sa Bay Area, then sometime May, mag-lalaban
laban ang mga regional winners say from East Coast etc.etc..
so National Level na...then on November yung, SUMMIT ACAPPELLA ekk na kung saan sometime na-gue-guest doon ang REAL GROUP, SWINGLE SINGERS, ROCKAPELLA, etc etc...at may
mga workshops and seminars...

* Lidholm: Libera me for mixed chorus a cappella
* Schnittke: Concerto for Mixed Chorus (1984-85)

i´m indeed in europe but not in switzerland.
but what i was trying to say was, that i enjoyed the company of the members from the said chorale group. before, we still have contact with some members of UP madrigal and even with ma´am oa veneracion and even with prof. paguio before he passed away. we still get in touch with members of UPCC until now. although their not a chorale group, members of the former UP filipiniana and its head were very close to us ( they also had several performances in europe during that time). i still get a chance to see this people ( UP madz, UPCC and UP filipiniana dance troupe) once i take my vacation in manila. unforunately, i don´t get the chance to meet some from UST singers. i have no idea why?
no matter what honors or awards a filipino university chorale claims abroad, the most important thing is that their performance was to sing the filipino culture to the people and build bridges between our culture to theirs.

with marvelous engineering from DG-Archiv,
this CD is better than the Herrewhege release
from harmonia mundi.
check out n'yo din yung Haydn 'creation' ni

to believe na there are 120 players and
80 singers... ang clean ng sound, and not to
mention na si Emma Kirkby ang Gabriel...
Go na sa Tower records!!! one fair warning

Watched the concert of the well-renowned groups last night at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola (84th St. and Park Avenue). Haaaayaaayaay... Napapikit na lang ang beauty ko sa kakaemote or napatingin sa designs nung church in appreciation of the beautiful music I was hearing. BTW, it was conducted nga pala by ERIC ERICSON, himself. How I wish I had one of Johnvianney's (or yours) hightech recording gadgets at nang narecord ko nang mas maayos ang performance. Syempre, tape recorder lang ang dala ko.
They sang 3 encores at sobra akong natuwa when they brought the house down with Och Jung.... I finally heard the real thing!!! :)
Tomorrow, off I go to Avery Fisher Hall at the Lincoln Center to watch their performance of Verdi's Requiem. I haven't heard Verdi's Requiem yet but Johnvianney told me to think of Verdi's Ave Maria na kinanta natin sa Phil. Chinugi. Suddenly I realize that this will be another extraordinary piece of serious work.

Yung kinanta nilang Schnittke, yung Concerto for Choir, kinanta na yan nila HARANGKING sa World Youth Choir. Feel ko yatang gawin ditrels...
Last time kong napanood ng sabay ang dalawang choirs was 11 years ago, sa Stockholm, where they sang whatever, siyempre hindi ko na maremember, alam mo naman ang alzheimers ng mudrash mo... At one point may all-female part na clusters na weaving in and out of each voice, and the overtones were too great, some members of the audience were actually covering their ears, isa na ko doon! Kalowka talaga! They also gave the pitch with a casiotone, which i have tried copying during the performances of the rach vespers. Anyway, enjoy ka sana sa verdi requiem, especially yung fortissimo dun sa confutatis, with the matching offstage trumpets, na akala mo ay katapusan na ng mundo!
GOETHE:
Sorry, ich bitte auch um entschuldigung, i thought you were another person i know. ich war auch ein ehemalige mitglieder der Madrigal Singers, aber schon lange zeit her. i sang with them from 1981 to 1989. So sorry for my deutsch, i always have trouble writing in the language.

CHOIRMASTER:
Sobra na naman akong natuwa at bongga na naman ang performance (VERDI'S REQUIEM conducted by Austrian conductor MANFRED HONECK) na napanood ko last Sunday. Hinintay ko yung fortissimo dun sa confutatis, with the matching offstage trumpets, pero wala naman akong narinig dahil BASS SOLO po yung confutatis. So, I guess, ito siguro yung trumpets chuva na nakakagulantang. At NALOWKA din ako sa DIES IRAE... OVER SA PAGKABONGGACIOUS!!!
Yung german MEZZO SOPRANO naman (NADJA MICHAEL) eh nakakalowka dahil entrada in a sleeveless white gown pero bondat dahil JONTIS.
Yung Libera me for mixed chorus a cappella ni Ingvar Lidholm eh mataray din. As in!! This particular piece daw eh talagang created by Lidholm for the Swedish Radio Choir and completed in 1994. So, ayan!!!
Ano bang latest with PCC??? And buhay pa ba ang SINGERS HARMONICS??? Curious ang beauty ko. Paki hello to HARANGKING FROM MOI.

Anyway, yung BOCA na sinasabi mo, I have the impression na ang materially relevant ekk nito eh mga compiled recordings of Collegiate groups na nilalagay nila sa isang CD or casette..Actuallilet, may mga binili akong BOCA casettes for the year 1994 etc..Pero lack-luster lang ang mga ito compared sa mga heavy-percussive ekk ng ibang grupo..na hindi documented doon..

Mother,
May nasagap akong balita regarding the new professional choir chuva. My reliable source told me na isang company (isang Santo) ang magpapayola ng mga singers (PHP25K up) at kumpleto benefits pa raw just to sing 4 hours of music.
Ikaw po ba or yung iyong choirmaster nung kabataan mo? At paano na ang Phil. Chinigi? Machuchugi na ba bec. of this new group?

Panahon ni Noel Bugarin... arranged a concert for them in Berlin, when I was a student there. My brother was in that batch, si Raphy Velasco. Happily married to Portia (DLSU Chorale din!) and they have one son, Paulo (future DLSU Chorale member!). Both work with BPI (ex-FEBTC) sa ITG.
Kuya Raphy is a friend of mine (he'll kill me for calling him kuya!) . . . nagpang-abot kami sa chorale 93-94 and also did Mabuhay Pilipinas! twice in 93 . . . he's our best bass at that time . . . grabe ang boses niya, parang ikaw . . . actually, kumanta kami nun sa house nyo . . :)

FYI....
Luciano Pavarotti the great Italian tenor once said that the most beautiful student chorale he had ever heard was, the University of Santo Tomas Singers. It was the time when UST Singers got the title Choir of the World. And to think they are not music majors, unlike people from UP Madz, but i think the Madz, made a lot before than ATENEO glee club.MAs trip ko Madz and USTe kaysa sa AGC and DLSU?PNU, i saw them, they are a very promising chorale, maybe someday they can beat the three top chorales, namely USTSingers, PHilippine Madrigal SIngers, and ATENEO Glee Club. THey are the best!!! Wish u all to bring the GRAND PRIX AGAIN!!!!!

Magagaling silang lahat, at lahat sila ay panalo in their own right.
Ngayon, if you could only translate your fervor for your own university choral group by attending ALL of their concerts... while you're at it, attend na rin kayo ng IBANG university choral groups para may comparison diba?
Kung hanggang sigaw lang kayo ng Go Glee Club, o Animo La Salle, o Go USTE! o kung ano man diyan, tapos wa naman kayo watch, e CHAKA NINYO! MANOOD NA LANG KAYO NG MGA ROCK BANDS AT IHAMPAS NINYO ANG ULO NINYO SA LEAD GUITAR, AT MAGBASA NA LANG KAYO NG PULP MAGAZINE NG TOWER RECORDS!

CHOIRMASTER & HARANGKING:
Haaay.... Back to reality na ang drama ko and ni Johnvianney after a 1 week festivity sa New Orleans.
Email me at bacatan@yahoo.com
No work ako ngayon dahil may huge winter storm dito ngayon sa Northeast at meron ding storm sa Western side of the U.S. Haaay.... Chika kayo dyan ha!

Yes,korek na korek si ditcheng Dina sa kanyang observations about the whole Mardi Gras. Oh my gosh, pati ako naging lesboo na rin...cheering those model-like, sexy
girls and ladies...flashing their boobies..Siempre...I cant help but observe the testosteronic jubilations of the male species..Hayun in one dark corner..may I corner ang mga bagets na walang ka-mwang-mwang and entice them with my blinky beads (take note, ito ang high-tech beads with lights ekk na parang equivalent ng mga christmas parols na ginagawa sa Pampanga)

Hahaha!!! Susuko ba kayo?
O dahil yung isa may encore ng theme from Hercules, tapos bongga yung ending? Tapos, magchi-chikahan lahat ng audience from 8 to 9:45 p.m., kasi wala namang kumakanta, kasi wala namang makikinig sa first half ng concert mo e. Tapos, at 9:45, lalabas na ang choir, kasi PURO ENCORE LANG NAMAN ANG INAABANGAN NG MGA MABABABAW NA HINAYUPAK NA MGA TINAMAAN NG LINTIK NA YAN, YUNG MATATAWA SILA O DI KAYA MALAKAS YUNG CHORD SA DULO! 30 minutes of that, meron ka nang INSTANT STANDING OVATION! I admire the UST Singers, they're really good but I'd say it's a tie bet. UST and the ATENEO COLLEGE GLEE CLUB and the Madz. They're all really good in their own way...with their own flavor in music. The ACGC has won soooooo much prizes in the span of their 3-month tour last year. They're participating in the Euro Grand Prix this year (same as the one UST participated in but they won second--sayang! madz won this a long time ago..97 i think).
GO ACGC!!!! GRABE KAYO!

And take note! Two memebers of the Ateneo Glee Club are from UST- John Pamintuan(Asst.-Conductor-ACGC;Conductor-AHSGC;a graduate of B.S.Medtech from UST-former UST-Pharmacy Glee Club(PGC) Conductor;music student of Conservatory of Music of UST) and Daphine {i forgot her new surname}(Alto of ACGC-B.S.Biochemistry graduate of UST;Former UST-PGC choirmaster)-purely Thomasians!(they are considered as section leaders for basses and alto's,respectively at ACGC)-And take note of the fact that THEY are niether a graduate nor a faculty member of Ateneo. They've been pirated from UST-'cause of thier singing ability! So if Ateneo Glee Club won the World Championship- it's not a 100% effort of ateneans only- also from 2 Thomasians.
UST Singers parin!

Ano ba yan!! Sobra naman ang fighting spirit mo! No doubt John and Daphine have been valuable assets to the glee club (um..daphine wasn't a section head though..just to set the record straight..)but 2 UST Alumnis versus a bunch of Ateneans doesn't make the choir's triumphs UST's doesnt it?? It was a joint effort of EVERYONE representing and believing in the Atenean standard of excellence that has to be reached every time you carry the name of the ACGC.

So, what happened to Mr. John Pamintuan? Napa-log-in tuloy ang lola nyo.
Ang balita fresh from the land of Palawan, joinmity pala ang ate John sa HTC Chorale ng Puerto Princesa na fly na sa April patungong Greece, Germany, Italy, France and Spain sa tulong din ng tour manager ng Ateneo Glee Club? How true?
Diba mas masarap manalo kung you're all from the same school? it's like bringing the name of the Philippines pero may member kayo na German o kayay Espanyol chuva.
Nakakainggit ngayon ang mga choirs sa Manila unlike during our time. Ariba ang Madz, Ateneo at UST Singers! At least now, hindi na masasabi na there's only one school who has the monopoly of everything(especially choral music).
Nonetheless, good luck ACGC and more power to the Madz, UST Singers and to all the Philippine choirs! We're proud of you.

Oh.. so you were part of the ACGC before. Were you part of the batch during the early 80s? I heard they are one of the good batches of ACGC because of the competitions they won. Not saying that the other batches aren't good. :) Anyhoo, I know what you mean about getting so much from the crowd that's watching you perform. It really makes you give a good and unforgattable performance.
So is that why you call yourself Euns(eons) or does it stand for something else.. :)
p.s. boy do you write early .. unless of course you live in the US now or Europe. ;)

I hope next weekend we could go to Kilkenny or Killarney. There's also this Cliffs of Moehr that my friend was suggesting that I go to. So many things to do so little time and it would be much better to go out with close friends.

I totally agree with what someone posted WAY back about the Madz not even being in the same league as other university-based choral groups. They are after all, the PMS and not the UPMS. While it may be argued that choirs such as the DLSU Chorale, ACGC or UST Singers can compete with them musically at certain times, I think its whole legacy is pretty hard to equal.
We all know(well, most of us) that the Madz is the only Filipino choir which has won the European Gran Prix, and are well aware of its musical achievements internationally. Few, however, fail to recognize its important role right here at home. Madz et al, which is composed of choirs conducted by Madz members and alumni has in its roster quite a few of the up-and-coming university choirs (UPLB, UP Manila, UE, PWU)as well as countless church and company choirs. Madz, under Prof. Veneracion's leadership, has been quite instrumental in the growth of choral music locally as Et Al festivals provide venues for these 30 or so choirs to perform and encourage them to constantly go beyond themselves. Many Et Al choirs have even made names for themselves outside of Madz et al (Chorus Paulinus,Pansol Choir, etc...) and can hold their own against other choirs.
As far as repertoire goes, many choirs (not just Madz et al members) benefit from the choral arrangements of Madz members and alumni/ae such as Robert Delgado, Chris Borela, Annie Nepomuceno and Eudy Palaruan. No other Filipino choir can boast of such a rich collection of choral arrangements by its very own members. I will eat my left shoe if you can prove me wrong.
I could actually go on and talk about the Madz' choral clinics and outreach concerts all over the country but I think I've already made my point clear enough. To go just a little bit further though, Ma'am OA wasn't made National Artist for Music for nothing.
So if the PMS isn't the best university choir because it has surpassed that status, then who IS the best university choir?
Does it really matter?

Bocelli,
Magaling ang performance ng Chorale. Fortunately, considering the infamous Manila traffic, I was able to catch their opening number...that Pater Noster by...i forgot! Well, balanced na uli ang sound cuz you've got equal number of singers in each section (4 each).
Just to tell you frankly...tindig balahibo lang ang performance (at least that's my opinion). Nice tuning, aided by the nice natural acoustics of Trinity chapel (yun ang sabi ni choirmaster na katabi ko nanood...)
Siyempre...may oddities pa rin...but nonetheless, it was a remarkable performance. Maganda din yung performance ng By and by...
The two italian madrigals also came off well...Vezzosi and Quel augellin...

Nikolas something..

Grabe, sing din nila ang By and By... waaaaaaaaa... i miss that song... solo ko dati yun .. pero dahil sa kakayosi.. hayan.. di na pwedeng kumasa ang boses ko.. WAAAAAAAAAAA

BOCCELLI:
Wagi din on the second night ang UPSA at Ed Manguiat. May kinanta silang Feliciano na first time ko lang yata napakinggan... turns out na kinomisyon yata nila si Sir Kiko to do the work, Panalangin sa Bagong Milenyo...
So, I missed d whole show, pero balita ko hit din.
Wasn't able to watch Ateneo tonight also, kasi nagrehearse ang PCC, dahil kami naman bukas.
You missed a whole week of free concerts by the best of the best ekk!
JohnVianney:
Papahirapan pa namin sila sa second audition ekk on Monday and Tuesday, with the matching sightreading... mangatog kayo! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Peace to all. PCC pala tonight at AILM. Aircooon! But its the perfect meditation music especially this lenten season.
People, watch out for the ACGC! The magic is back (di naman nawala), and of course the fruits of hard labor and sacrifice.
Alang thrill.
This is harangking, signing OFF.......

Fortunately I was still able to catch the 2nd and 3rd parts.
ACGC's performance that night was just so impressive... parang lumulutang ang mga boses. Sopranina, bow kami sa yo! It was such an improvement from the last performance I watched (nung kasama niyo yung Madz - pero magaling na rin kayo nun :)). With the way you sang, for sure malaki ang chance niyo sa Grand Prix.
I honestly hope that you win this year (walang kaplastikan yon... unlike what some person has said). The whole DLSU Chorale is cheering for you!

Hey Bocelli. The first thing you must do is capture/extract or rip the audio from your tape by hooking your stereo to your pc. But first your soundcard should be top of the line and is capable of doing so. Me, I use a software called "creative recorder" for that. But any other sound editor software that can record will do, such as wavelab, cooledit, goldwave and the like. The file would be quite large because it's in .wav format. If you're satisfied with the quality of the sound, you can then directly burn it to cd, otherwise you can enhance/improve the sound quality (eliminate hiss, clicks and pops)to suit your taste by using the said program applications. If you wish to convert it to mp3, you can just "save as" mp3. Some like wavelab offer such conversions. Burning softwares can also do this. And these are availabe at your favorite pirated suking tindahan. There are cds sold that already include these softwares and more including score publishing softwares (finale and such). Punta ka sa Greenhills dami. :D

If the contents of your tape is one of a kind, I mean stuff that can't be found anywhere else; personal recordings baga, eh you're making the right decision to transfer it to cd to lengthen its life expectancy so to speak. I suggest you just download it from somewhere. Try chatting with other users from Napster or Audiognome and maybe you guys can make arrangements for you to get these recordings from them. (You'd be amazed at the variety of music some people collect. Some of them they share quite sparingly.) My brother does that and some of them send him mp3 cds of songs he requested of them. Some come from as far as Europe even. Sometimes, he tells them to upload it to his locker at "myplay.com". I don't really know how that works, but people can really be so kind and helpful they'd do the uploading for you. Try it. Kasi, unless super ganda pa ng condition ng tape mo, e medyo madugo ang cleaning-up na gagawin mo diyan, lalo na kung meticulous ka when it comes to quality. There would be hissing of course. Although bulag ka Boccelli, alam kong kaya mo yan.;) Not only will you have preserved your precious audio, but you can also revel in the satisfaction of having done it yourself. Finally, in short, 'yoko eh. :Dhe:Dhe:D

Oo nga pala I haven't made my vote pa on who I think is the best University choir. Sino nga kaya? Hmmmm... Well, ACGC has been pretty consistent lately, although obvious that if certain key people aren't there eh ewan din. Same case with the Madz. Actually, as with any other choir. But if we're talking about track record, eh Madz pa rin. Medyo mahirap i-top ang achievements of different batches through the years. Kaya lang lately very inconsistent. Minsan galing, as in! Minsan, eeh:boom: parang community choir. *****, if the ACGC would bag the Grand Prix this year eh medyo of the same league na rin sila. Kaya lang sino ba talaga conductor n'yo? Who gets the credit?:silly: Well, if the members aren't good..., the conductor can only do so much di ba?Competition is good. It keeps everybody on their toes. Pero syempre younger at mas vibrant(not associated with vibrato) ang ACGC. Madz? sige na nga puwede na rin. That's the benefit of being an outsider. You see and hear everybody as they are--without bias nor prejudice.:D Teka, may nagpopost pa ba dito? Nalaos na yata bago ko nadiscover. IMBYERNA

You should hear their sightreading part! Oh well, you can't have everything...
I started rehearsing na with Ateneo last Monday and Tuesday... tonight din and tomorrow night. Major overhaul interpretation-wise on some of the pieces. Metronome markings not followed, baka ma-chugi sa competisyen!

Oo nga nabasa ko yung "plastikan" comment na yan a few pages back. It's so sad to think that certain people have become so cynical they think everybody else is as insincere as they are:bop:. Sino yon? si harangjr. ba? Pare, reality check lang:). Not everybody thinks as you do. Your reality is not everybody else's. Some people did have a happy childhood:lol: you know, and when they say they wish you luck, they mean it, believe me. Although meron sigurong isa o dalawang plastik dyan, eh I think generalizing it is just too unfair:angry:. Naku, I would hate siguro to compliment you on anything. You will just think na nakikipagplastikan ako sayo. Sad no?:frown: Try keeping that frame of mind and soon you'll have no real friends. At Kung meron man, siguro nakikipagplastikan lang yun sayo. Next time, just say thank you ok? ACGC Good Luck sa Grand Prix! Win na kayo I'm sure!
Anyhow, I think this Professional Choir will be the ultimate choir at least dito sa 'tin. Well, since its professional, it's not within the ranks of the University choirs we're discussing here. Imagine? The conductor has the opportunity to pick out the best singers around? Well, at least from among those who auditioned. Galing siguro:inluv:. Tapos award-winning pa ang conductor:*) (choirmaster). Excited nako to watch the inaugural concert:D. Choirmaster, ano bang offering n'yo?

Kasi, your soundcard should have an input jack/port or what have you to capture sound. I don't know if built in laptop soundcards are capable of that. However, hooking your stereo to the microphone jack and recording would produce not so desirable results. Using that technique eh usually panget and labas. But you could try it anyway, haven't tried it yet. Moreover, your laptop should have considerable amount of diskspace because audio or .wav files occupy much space, at an average of 30MB per 3-minute song. Otherwise, it will crash. Your processor should also be quite fast to cope up with the real-time speed of the audio you are capturing.
Sayang, I don't think we've ever met. I'd do it for you for free kung close tayo.hehe:D Ano ba kasing laman n'yang mga tapes na 'yan?
However, to be sure and for utmost compatibility, buy a reliable brand like hewlett packard and the like.

Boccelli: Naku, medyo may sentimental value pala laman n'yan. Kelan ka pa ba sumali at medyo pre-digital pa ata? :lol:hehe. I'm sure magkakakilala rin tayo someday since you're into the chorale scene din pala. Hey, just an idea. Why not join a choir now and make new memories? Pick your choice Madz, ACGC.... Non-exclusive na naman sila eh.
Minette: Thanks for the welcome!:)

Yup.. medyo sentimental ang value niya to me. I would simply love to archive all those great performances on a cd.
I am part of a group naman eh pero hindi sobrang active. Its a group of former DLSU Chorale members. Masaya siya kasi wala masyadong pressure pero we still get to do what we want which is sing beautifully. Although wala nga lang si Sir Boy to conduct us, nandoon pa rin naman yung mga years of training that we got from Sir Boy so i would think we sound good pa rin. :)
yun lang po.. hihihihihi :D

CHOIRMASTER:
Talent in singing, quality of voice, yes, lalaban ang pinoy. Pero, sight-reading? Hmmm... ewan. But I am sure, meron ding mga megatalented in sight reading pero gift na yan, madir. It's either you have it or you don't. I remember sa Phil. LOL. Well, good luck po sa composition ng iyong new Professional Choir. I hope na pag-uwi ko dyan (kung kailan man ito) eh may performance kayo.
Choirlowla, as for the ACGS's "Major overhaul interpretation-wise on some of the pieces. Metronome markings not followed, At kung saan naman hindi naka-indicate, either masyadong mabilis or masyadong mabagal! kalowka":
MADIR, lahat yata ng choirs dyan sa Pilipinas (with the exception of course of the Philippine Chinugi Choir which is under your supervision), eh guilty of this. This is a common flaw. Mali-mali ang interpretesyen, hindi sinusundan ang mga metronome readings ek (kung alam ba nilang gamitin ang metronome in the first place ano!), ang mga gospel music eh tunog romantic pa rin, ang mga classical pieces eh tunog pop at kung ano-ano pang kacheapan. YES, NO DOUBT, minsan maganda ang tunog, malinis, maganda pakinggan. Pero, HELLO! MALI pa rin. Sorry sa mga natatamaan but this is true.
Buti na lang may PCC to get me going those days. Oh, well, those were the days.
GOOD LUCK CHOIRLOWLA SA EUROPEAN GRAND PRIX. This I have to hear. Hello!!! Nung panahon ko sa GC at even nung mga batch '83 to '89 (those who went to Europe for competisyens and festivals), eh mega-vibrats ang GC, somewhere in between MADZ and the Camerata Singers/Phil. Saringhimig of yore. Ewan ko ba, madir but in the old days eh I feel na parang required na magvibrato dahil mas mature daw ang tunog, mas maganda. Haaay naku!
O, ayan po ang napakahabang litanya. Mukha yatang magbabago na ako ng nick/handle/alias ditrels at I am thinking of joining a choir here in NYC na megaperform ng mga big pieces of BACH at kung ano-ano pa.

I'm sure they will be a big hit.
Ma-imagine mo ba aketch mader! BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!
Isa-isa nang tinatawagan ang mga nakapasa sa awdisyen... hindi ka pa ba natatawagan diyan? hehehe... ibig sabihin chugi ka, kasi dati kang member ng Philippine Chinugi... you must live up to your name, you know...
As for the sightreading ekk, it's the standards that are deteriorating. There must be something from way back na okay naman ang produkto (kami and batches before us) kaysa kinalikot ng kinalikot ang curriculum, hanggang makarating sa kinaroroonan ngayon - wala nang marunong bumasa. Bongga!

Anyway, I am very happy for you and the Glee Club. As in.

Hay naku... we await the day na ma-ban ang bibimpap sa mundo. As for the performances, medyo magulo ang scheduling kaya medyo kainis pero hindi naman masyado kasi they treated us well. Super lamig pala doon as in parang nakakasugat yung lamig lalo na nung gabi pagdating namin. :)

The original Company was a group of 12 alumni guys and gals from the '81 and '83 batches. They originally started yata as a harang group that sang at the old Italian Village restaurant (yata) alaong Quezon Ave. It slowly dwindled down to about half their number when they hit the music mainstream, but most of them still joined the ACGC in the '89 European tour. After they realesed their first album, Tom Callisterio left the group and was replaced by Reuben Laurente. Meus Bartoleme (the girl in the "Everlasting Love" duet), also left shortly after that, and was replaced by a succession of sopranos, the latest being Sweet Plantado <----- amazing gurhl, can do pop and classical really well :)
Any feedback, constructive or otherwise, is higly apprciated (cross my fingers! :P) heheheheheheh

gud day!
i've been following this thread since it was cited as one of the most famous topic here in pex. by the way,im a junior correspondent nga pala from a big network and we covered the gathering of Ched yesterday and the day before it at the Manila Midtown. what's the relation of that on what have forced me to comment in here?...it's becoz may isang very famous na choir ang kumanata sa culminating program ng ched yesterday - nabalita na sila dito na naghihingalo at nagkawatak watak na pero bat ganun, nagulat ako at nakakanta pa sila kahapon - isa pa sa nakakagulat, kakaiba tunog nila...parang hindi nanggaling sa crisis! i've been a follower of the choral music scene here in the country since my good ol'days sa up. nagulat ako dahil akala ko eh tuluyan ng mawawala ang choir na ito. in a way, natuwa din ako na bumalik na sila - the university presidents and officials there were 'wowed' because of their
unimaginable performance, iba talaga - i hope that the rehabilitation of this choir should be tuloy tuloy na...and to my favorite - MADZ - iba pa din kayo...anyway, yun palang ang chika ko.

Sandali lang, musicians have been using the word "harang" since time immemorial. Does anybody know where it came from? Etymology ba. It's really been bothering me :bonkself: Oo really talaga. :rotfl:

BWAHAHAHAHAHA... what a Saburdei...
Heto na ang hatol.... WINNER!
I wasn't too familiar with most of the songs in the repertoire... I didn't even get to see the "menu".
All i remembered were a few that really caught my attention.
Awit ni Solomon -> Amazing piece... very ... INTENSE! I commend the arranger/composer?
Libera Me(not sure if im right all i remembered was that it was the first or second song after the intermission that was Latin) but heniway... first time i've hear it... GALING!
I Cannot Dance, O Lord -> what a great piece! and just awesome performance of it.
Pamugun -> now I know what this song is... I have constantly heard about it but haven't really heard it.. at least I got to hear one of the best interpretations of it from one of the best choirs in the world. :)
Comments gathered from friends Saturday night during gimik:
...very close to Eastern European Choirs but with the Filipino edge!
Again.. CONGRATULATIONS to the Ateneo College Glee Club...
