koristaakono, if you want people to think that UPSA is hardselling itself like what UE did, it's a futile attempt. That's really cheap.
Don't underestimate the pexers' intelligence here.
haaay taga UE kasi! :bop:
i agree. Di kami mga bobito. I pity UE talaga. Nakakatawa na talaga ang mga pinaggagawa ng fans nila (or maybe they themselves did it, which is more pathetic) ...:rotflmao:
mag qualify muna kayo sa EGP, then perhaps, maihahanay ko na kayo sa BIG FOUR...:p
as for now, the whole choral community laughs at your press releases...:bop:

Congratulations to the UST Symphony Orchestra and the UST Singers for their successful concert last Jan. 24 at the CCP Main Theater.
Their rendition of Karl Jenkin's Requiem was amazing! World-class performance, indeed!
Kudos also to Prof. Jae-Joon Lee, the orchestra's guest conductor from Korea. :)

everytime I visit this forum, laging may naga-away. haha!
with all the drama of choir battles, sa tingin ko ay magaling ito for reality tv.
simulan natin sa mga GAME shows: singing bee or K! one representative per major choir, pagalingan kumanta bukod sa pagalingan sa lyrics.
tapos tuloy sa group games (ano bang group games on tv? family feud?).
:rotflmao:
tapos ang last battle ay mala-Pinoy dream academy, lahat ng choirs nasa isang house lang tapos every week nag pe perform at may tatanggalin na isa based on viewer votes. hehehe.
good tv? :naughty:

1.UP madz
2.UPSA and DLSU chorale
3.UST singers
I heard the UST singer's recording of 'Ilay Gandangan" and compared it to DLSU chorale's performance in lpep and I would say that DLSU chorale was better.
I also heard UST singer's recording of 'tagumpay nating lahat' and compared it to UP Madz video in youtube and Madz was certainly better.
..magaling rin and UPSA at DLSU chorale sa blending but their dynamcs is not that good. masyadong overpowering ang soprano at alto ng upsa while kulang naman sa dagundong ang base ng DLSU chorale
..masyadong dumadagundong ang base, which is a bad thing. nawawala na kasi *** tunog ng alto, di na masarap pakinggan

Who would even believe you that DLSU chorale is better than the UST singers? For crying out loud.
I even believe that the Ateneo Glee club and the UE singers are way better than dlsu chorale. I dare you list down all the international credentials that would level your school's chorale to that of UPSA :rotflmao:
We'd always stick for the choir enthusiasts that UST singers and the UP madz are the best in the country. par excellence.patawa ka naman

These videos from youtube remind me of the Philippine premiere of Karl Jenkins' Requiem for Chorus and Orchestra staged by the UST Synphony Orchestra and the UST Singers last Jan. 24, 2009 at the CCP Main Theater.
Sana may mag upload sa youtube nung concert last Jan. 24. :)

well, I guess its my bad that what I've downloaded from limewire is not an authentic UST Chorale version...
nevertheless, it was a point of comparison.....
besides, I alread sited out my opinions on why I believe DLSU chorale was a better chorale group.
I was a member of our high school's chorale, and our past time is to listen to professional singing groups(UP Madz, UPSA, UST Singers) to compare with our presentation. And I never did favor much with the UST Singers since their bases are so powerful that the blending was not that good.

hay naku.. let's consider this facts iamgreen, the recording you heard of ilay gandangan, was sung by the UST singers, hindi pa sila ganun kabihasa sa mga tour, first european tour nila nung nirecord nila yun, which is i am right was 1993.. (am i right sir enteng?), try comparing the sound of the 1995 batch, they won the choir of the world.. on the other hand, the dlsu batch you could have heard was the most successful batch it had produced (im not sure with that though), the other fact you have to consider, Sir Boy Delarmente was the one who arranged the piece, alam mo ang dapat tunog nun as arranger....
as a parting advice to you my brother, try watching these choirs live, not just through some old recordings.. ang madz, mahusay pa rin, parang hindi nahinga.. hehehe.. parang the whole song, walang breath marks...
ang UST, if you are looking for a powering group, you have to hear these guys, and you think your group has forte...
anyways, peace.. ciao...

well, one the first things that iamgreen should know and learn is difference between " its and it's " and " singer's, singers and singers' "; a quick review of possessive pronouns may help.

i agree. if you were to review the UEC "defenders'" posts, theirs were really personal and tinged with anger, for some reason. no humility whatsoever. such a pity. nawala lahat ng kinang ng UEC.
i just hope the members of the UEC would learn from ALL of this. better to keep a low profile than to fight dirty, even if the comments seemed unfair. that's CLASS, which is a trait of real world-class choirs...

UE Chorale profile
# The UE Chorale (UEC) is the Official Choir of the University of the East (UE). It was founded in June 1992 as the UE Glee Club comprised by students from the different colleges of the UE. UE Chorale sings at UE official functions, participates at the MADZ Et. Al., an annual festival hosted by the Philippine Madrigal Singers; performs at several Philippine government functions and other worthy projects.
# Ms Anna Tabita Abeleda-Piquero, a member of the Philippine Madrigal Singers, has been the UE Chorale conductress since June 1999. She instilled in the UE members discipline, a sense of commitment and love for work, gearing towards musical excellence for world-class performances.
# After six months of rigorous training, the UE Chorale won 2nd place in the 1st Concurso Coral de Ateneo (1999), 1st Place in the 28th National Music Competition for Young Artist (NAMCYA) in Regional Finals and Honorable Mention in the Nationals.
# In June 2003, the UE Chorale became an ambassador of goodwill beginning with a three-month long European Tour participating in international festivals in cities in Germany, Austria, and Italy. In its First European Tour, the UE Chorale made its mark as one of the best Choirs in the world by qualifying and winning in two of the most prominent competitions in Europe. In the prestigious 40th International Chorwettbewerb in Spittal, Austria, the UE Chorale was declared overall Second Place winner in the Polyphonic Art Song category of the International Choirs Competition, besting nine countries - Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Hungary, Norway, Russia, Sweden, USA, and Austria. Because of its individual charm and appeal, the UE Chorale won the coveted Publikumspreis being voted by the public as the best choir in the competition. Being the crowd favorite, the group was the only choir invited to the Office of the Mayor in Spittal an der Drau for a courtesy call.
# Joining the ranks of internationally-acclaimed Filipino choirs, the UE Chorale competed in the prestigious 51st Guido d' Arezzo Concurso Polifonico in Arezzo, Italy where they won First Prize in the Competizione Straordinaria category, First Prize in the Nino Antonelli Special Prize category for its rendering of contemporary compositions joined by other eighteen participants from all over the world, also winning the Second Prize in the Polyphonic Category. By winning in several categories, the UE Chorale became one of only two choirs that qualified to vie for the Citta di Arezzo Grand Prize.
# Locally, the UE Chorale was chosen as the Most Outstanding Chorale Group of 2003 by the Consumer's Choice Awards and was the Grand Prize winner in the 2003 Himig ng Koro Chorale Competition.
# In June to August 2004, the UE Chorale embarked on its second European Tour, visiting Italy and France and competed in an International Choral Competition in Gorizi, Italy. The UE Chorale won First Prize in one of the categories and the most coveted Publikumspreis Award.
# In November 2005, the UE Chorale was invited to visit different cities in South Korea, joined choral festivals and performed in a series of concerts together with National Artist for Music and founder of Philippine Madrigal Singers, Professor Andrea O. Veneracion.
# In 2006 & 2007, the UE Chorale was the back-to-back Grand Prix winner at Busan International Choral Festival and Competition, South Korea, winning one gold and one silver medal in 2006; one gold medal each for Pop and Classical music in 2007.

This is the video of UPSA's rendition of Aming Dasal, the Tagalog version of The Prayer during the UP: 100 Years of World Class Music concert. UPCC sings the Tong Song before this:

Finally! Nasa youtube na most of UPSA's repertoire in their Debrecen competition last year. This is a long overdue comment, but it seems they had a complete make-over in terms of repertoire... and the performances was just superb and breath taking..

The superb UST Singers/Binay presents concert/Vapni opens photo show
SUNDRY STROKES By Rosalinda L. Orosa Updated May 06, 2009 12:00 AM
Upon the invitation of UST Conservatory Dean and piano virtuoso Raul Sunico, I attended the UST Singers’ concert under the direction of conductor-pianist-arranger Fidel G. Calalang Jr. Winner of 45 international awards, including the title “Choir of the World” garnered in Wales, UK, the group is scheduled to leave May 7 on its 17th world tour to vie for further honors in the US and Mexico (brave souls!).
At the concert held in the residence of Guia Gomez, the choir rightly invoked God’s blessing, opening with “The Lord’s Prayer.” Followed a Bach motet, the native songs Mag Tanim Hindi Biro, Dandansoy and Waray Waray — all arranged by Calalang — Spanish love songs including Eres Tu, a Cuban love song, a spiritual, Broadway hits and a devastating, climactic medley consisting of excerpts from Bizet’s Carmen, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Strauss’ ‘The Beautiful Blue Danube,” among others.
Under the masterful direction of Calalang, the singers wholly justified their international awards. Totally disciplined, inspired and responsive to Calalang’s cueing, the choir cohesively conveyed the softest pianissimos swelling to tremendous fortissimos which nearly shattered the glass panes of the living room. With consistently clear diction and the subtlest, most sensitive nuances, the group differentiated styles, one from every other. Emotions ranged from sadness, surprise, gladness, disappointment, grief, to ecstatic joy.
Imaginative, clever and inventive, Calalang made his many arrangements arresting and fascinating. Whenever he played the piano to assist the singers — these sang throughout without scores! — his infectious zest, vigor and spirit were duly captured and expressed by them.
The soloists — a baritone, tenor and two sopranos — were outstanding.
How movement and dance added charm to the songs!
We nurture the hope that despite the rigors and stresses the singers will inevitably experience in the various competitions abroad, the richly gifted Calalang will lead them to garner top honors again, returning home as always as the country’s pride.
Concert sponsor was the Foundation for Filipino Artists headed by Jul Dizon, with Willie Soliven and Sessy Garcia among its members

Lee, UST Singers: Dynamic!/The Voice of Leadership
SUNDRY STROKES By Rosalinda L. Orosa Updated February 07, 2009 12:00 AM
The University of Sto. Tomas, which will mark its 400th year in 2011, had its conservatory, headed by Dean Raul Sunico, presenting a fascinating concert at the CCP main theater. Featured were the UST Symphony Orchestra under the eminent international Korean conductor Jae-Joon Lee and the world-acclaimed UST Singers under conductor Fidel Calalang Jr.
With Lee wielding the baton, the opening Egmont Overture by Beethoven crystallized the heroic fight of the Flemish army, led by Count Egmont, against the Spaniards as Goethe depicts in a play. The dramatic piece was given a sweeping riveting rendition, concluding with an electrifying performance by the brasses. An orchestra is only as good as its conductor, it has been observed. Under the remarkably dynamic Lee, the UST Symphony Orchestra, consisting predominantly of students with a sprinkling of alumni, outdid itself, demonstrating the strictest discipline in the solid, cohesive and expressive quality of its tones.
In the succeeding number, focus was on the UST Singers, the choral group which romped off, under Calalang, with some of the most prestigious international awards: the “Choir of the World” Grand Prize along with four first prizes at the Llangollen International Music Festival in Wales, UK; the Gran Premio “Cita di Gorizia” and four first prizes in Gorizia, Italy, and the Grand Prize in the Tonen International competition in Munster, Netherlands, along with three First Prizes and the Best Conductor Prize for Prof. Calalang.
Expectedly, the 40-member mixed choir lived up to its distinctions in Karl Jenkins’ profoundly moving Requiem which was interpreted through an interesting combination of strings, percussions and a Japanese flute. The composer, with audacious originality and imagination, employed Oriental (primarily Japanese) elements which created a unique spiritual air as the choir intoned the Introit, Die Irae, Rex tremendae, Confutatis, Lacrimosa, Pie Jesu, Lux aeterna and In Paradisum, singing in vigorous, zestful, greatly urgent voices (Dies Irae); in long, smoothly sustained high notes (Confutatis) or a cappella. Only the women sang in mournful, lambent manner in one brief section, with orchestra and choir finishing Requiem with the glorious, rousing climactic In Paradisum.
The choir exhibited clarity of diction, tonal richness and balance, beauty of phrasing, being alternately passionate or gentle in its appeal. The soloists were Naomi Sison and Thea Perez Prosia, the latter leaving the more vivid impression.
Conductor Lee’s tremendous dynamism shone again in Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 in E Minor (New World). With energetic thrusts of the baton, Lee brought the substance of the music to the fore, brasses and woodwinds, strings and percussions eloquently etching its various descriptive elements, both old (Dvorak’s own) and new (America).
The concert, immensely gratifying, had offered the best from two of the UST Conservatory’s departments: the orchestral and the vocal.

I think ganun naman talaga sa simula. Take UPSA for example. They were heavily influenced by the UP Concert Chorus at the start considering the fact that Mr. Manguiat was formerly with UPCC.
A lot of the Madz et al choirs look like the Madz sa biglang tingin. I mean some even "copy" the infamous semi-circle seating position. :D
Hopefully, these choirs will outgrow those influences and somehow establish their own identity like what UPSA was able to accomplish. *okay*

PUP Serenata Wins in the First European Union Chorale
The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) Serenata romped away with the title "First European Union Chorale" in a competition held at the Far Eastern University Auditorium on May 15.
The Sta. Mesa-based state university, through its University Center for Culture and the Arts (UCCA), unleashed its mastery over rivals to pocket the international contest's first place.
In addition to the title, PUP also received a trophy, certificate, and cash reward.
UCCA's trainer, Mr. Emil R. Cruz, was likewise awarded the best conductor. Cruz stamped his superiority over three strong competitors.
PUP entered the finals together with six other universities. These universities were survivors from the 10 semi-finalists.
The other universities which succeeded in winning other titles were the University of the Philippines-Los Baños Vocal Ensembles, first runner-up; College of Saint Benilde Coro San Benildo, second place; and University of Sto. Tomas Coro Tomasino, third place.

Filipino singers win a range of honors in the California International Choir Festival and Competition
Meanwhile, the Cuesta College Chamber Singers take second place in all three categories

This weekend, the University of Santo Tomas Singers swept the California International Choir Festival and Competition, winning the People’s Choice Award as well as two other categories at the event that ran Friday through Sunday in San Luis Obispo.
“This is a great honor,” said choir director Fidel Calalang Jr. “We’re bringing home a lot of smiles with us.”
The 26-member choir also took first place in the Folk and Required Pieces competitions.
Sikama Choir, which hails from the Republic of Congo, received the Judge’s Special Award.
“It’s basically for a choir that’s very good but coming from a totally different choral tradition,” said Pat Harris, the festival’s executive director.
The top spot in the Choir’s Choice competition went to the St. Zlata Meglenska Chamber Choir, an all-female ensemble from Macedonia.
The Central Coast’s own Cuesta College Chamber Singers took second place in all three divisions.
The University of Santo Tomas Singers is the second Filipino musical group to win big at the festival.
Imusicapella, from the island of Luzon, won the People’s Choice Award and other prizes at the first-ever choral competition in 2007.
Calalang founded the University of Santo Tomas Singers, based in Manila, in 1992.
Over the past 16 years, the choir has garnered more than 45 top awards at international choral competitions. The group, which consists of students and alumni, tours regularly in Europe, Asia and North America.
However, the San Luis Obispo event marked the choir’s first competition in the United States, Calalang said. The group plans to perform in San Francisco, San Jose and Los Angeles before heading home to Manila.
“It’s really great that we were able to win prizes,” he said, adding there’s a possibility the group could return to the Central Coast.
The third California International Choral Festival and Competition will be held in 2011.

"University of Santo Tomas Singers, Philippines: This mixed group was the most colorfully dressed and the most enthusiastically theatrical. Their “Stabat Mater” was the most abstract piece of the afternoon, and their evening Broadway medley the most rousing. They received three standing ovations and the biggest awards: first place, RPC; first place, FSC; and People’s Choice Award." - The Tribune

Interesting piece, though I found it a bit corny, similar to a piece performed by the Taiwanese EGP finalist in 2007, the year the Madz won it's 2nd EGP.
Moving on, I have been browsing live choral performances in youtube (it seems that uploading choral performances in youtube is becoming the new black in promotional tactics!), and I found the following as the more exceptional ones:
From the Madz, an emotionally-stirring rendition of a beautiful piece about Dante's Divine Comedy. I think this was their piece de resistance which won them the choral world's top prize:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epT2dc2z0nc
From the UST Singers, an excellently sung Chua-ay in the 1995 edition of Llangollen where they won the title of "Choir of the World":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Vp0O1hVPwM
From the UP Singing Ambassadors, a crisp and wonderfully different version of Pamugun, albeit slower than the version of Madz, during the 2008 version of Llangollen where they won 1st prize in the Chamber Choir Category. Never thought a slower version of this song would work, but it did:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgUFc7-1WnI
No doubt, the Madz, UST Singers and UPSA have won the most number of international awards from the most difficult international competitions in the past decade (well, Madz have been winning long before...). Arguably, these three are the best Filipino choirs today and have been an inspiration to promising choral groups in the country.*okay*

btw, watched the farewell concert of novo concertante last month. some of my friends who are members of the choir invited me. mr. arwin tan's choir has improved a lot in terms of tone quality of the singers and the blending. i feel they need to improve more on balance as some sections do stick out in some songs. they are now in their first european tour and will be competing in spittal, austria. i find novo to be one of the better et al choirs and i hope they win in spittal. i commend mr. tan for keeping the choir humble and grateful despite their success.*okay*

about the corny thing: is that the best critique you can say about the song/performance?
i find it so shallow to say things like these - for all you know, a lot has been poured to make this performance work! and for you to say this? WHO ARE YOU!? WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE!?
if you're part of a certain choir, i challenge you sing the piece, perform it and we'll judge you...
poor taiwanese choir and the ust singers (who are currently rejoicing about their recent win - who are you to spoil it like this!?), to be shortened by a single dumb criticism of yours is just not right.
again, i challenge you..

my 2 cents.

Here we go again. Some Pexers can really be overly sensitive to criticism. As if you can't say anything NOT pleasing to their ears. Bakit ba? Corny is not even a "below-the-belt" word. I've seen harsher criticisms here in Pex. Pasalamat ka at may breeding pa ako not to use words such as ***** or **** to describe your performance. Sheesh, just goes to show you can't take criticism, period.
Look, your efforts in performing that corny piece is beside the point. It doesn't mean that if you worked hard for the piece, praises will automatically follow.
Dumb criticism ba? I feel that you think ALL criticism is dumb. If you expect all Pexers to be "yes" men, umalis ka na lang sa thread na to. The reality is some people, even those who exactly like your choir, might not exactly agree with your song. Hay, naku, I pray that UST singers wont be as sensitive to "mild" criticism as you. For me, the choir members' attitude and personality is just AS IMPORTANT AS their talent. AYOKO NG SELF-CENTERED AT HAMBOG AT PIKON NA CHOIR. Nobody does.
UST singers, ganito ba mag-react ang mga miembro nyo or fans nyo, if somebody simply says your performance is "corny?"
Nakakatakot pala kayo.
And forget bout your challenge. Not interested in performing your corny piece. Who am I? A learned Pexer who lives in a country where one can join a forum that permits one to SPEAK HIS MIND.:bop:

looking back at namethattune's last post (where all this commotion seemingly started!) I don't think she said something wrong. She didn't even resort to name-calling and even included one of UST Singers' youtube clips as her fave. So, I don't understand what the outburst is all about.
As for my comments on "Irritations," i think it's very entertaining. love the rhythm of the foot stamping. Made me bobble my head along. Ayoko lang nung pose sa ending -- medyo ano nga...hehe. but generally i enjoyed it.
Sorry to butt in, but I just really hate it when some pexers over-react to a simple criticism. But hey, this is a public forum. You get both the good and rotten apples. *peace*

The UST Singers has a big fan base in Europe. Senor Cameno (Spain) and Sr. Altierri (Mexico), two of the most important figures in the world choral scene are ardent admirers of the UST Singers.
I think it was Cameno who went here in the Philippines just to watch the UST Singers at the Philam Auditorium sometime ago.

to d'others: no such thing true or false critics. there are however, critics with different backgrounds -- some knew music via studying, some via experience, and some via taste. all valid i think, as long as hindi baztuz ang dating. corny ba? dyusko day! yun lang nag aalburuto na. ano kaya kung ang comment na ibato ay -- pangit, karindirindi, o kaya nakakasulasok ang pagkanta, hahahaha! pero "corny?" puleeeez, mild salasa lang yan! and who's to say a simple comment here in pex is not as valid as say, calalang's or delamente's? ang alam ko, may comment na garapal dito at may pikon, ika nga ng isang pex, hahaha! at kawawa nag choir na may OA na miembro o fans, tsk-tsk...batu-bato sa langit...

Hi there! it's been a while..i don't even think anyone knows me here except for johnny b bad my very dear friend. First of all, CONGRATULATIONS NOVO for helping uplift the standing and image of our people!:)Anyway, I'm a bit bothered by what I've been reading lately... For me it's no longer entertaining...you are what you are right now because of your hard work yes...but first of all, this is a forum of expression...Although the word encourages freedom..the thread itself limits that freedom to University choral groups which should exclude personal insults and degrading remarks...no matter what you've done and no matter where you've been, you must remember that you didn't do it alone...and that you shouldn't have done it solely for yourself so as to make you brag... Too bad for those posting incorrect or inaccurate observations and congratulations to those posting correct ones...But for those who are knowledgeable of the craft that we all have been trying our best to perfect...be patient...and also be vigilant by imparting the knowledge that you posses and not by bragging the knowledge that you claim to posses without sharing them. And still...if they resist to be educated....again...too bad for them diba?:) SING ON PPL...:)

Congrats Novo ... pansin ko puro polyphony nalang napapanalunan ng pinas sa torrevieja (well based lang naman yan sa previous two choirs: Novo an UE)
Congrats din sa Madz for the UN title ... I heard UPSA dati was a nominee for the UNESCO International Music Prize.

Read on, I feel bad about this. When I read the announcement, my reaction was and still is the same as the article's:
'Shameless' selection of nat'l artists
WEDNESDAY, 29 JULY 2009
Where’s delicadeza in conferring the most prestigious cultural award on the same person who advises the President on the matter?
Malacañang on Wednesday announced the names of 7 individuals to be conferred the Pambansang Alagad ng Sining awards this year. And the list confirmed the worst fears that many artists had entertained these past weeks—that Cecille Guidote-Alvarez would be among the awardees.
Actually, they also feared that President Arroyo would do dagdag-bawas on the list of awardees that the Council of Experts submitted. That, Gng. Gloria also did. She inserted not just 1 name but 4.
But back to Alvarez. About two weeks ago, concerned artists gave Newsbreak the info that Alvarez “got [President] GMA to name her National Artist” for theater. Our sources have a common reaction to Alvarez's "selection" (and the insertion of 2 more names): "Shameless."
Why shameless?
So far, nobody has questioned Alvarez’s credentials (although I’m very sure somebody will in the next few days or weeks). The immediate issue obviously is of delicadeza.
The National Artist Award is the most prestigious in the arts and culture sector. It is conferred by no less than the President on individuals who are chosen in a rigorous, 2-phase selection process where their peers—prominent and accomplished artists themselves—vote.
The award is jointly administered by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines. The two agencies oversee the selection process and transmit the shortlist to the President. The President then issues an executive order conferring the award on each of the artists on the short list.
Alvarez is the executive director of the NCCA. She is also the presidential adviser on culture. That places her in a position of conflict of interest—she runs the awards secretariat, and she advises the Lady in Malacañang on matters that concern the sector for which the award is intended.
Last May, Newsbreak wrote an Inside Track revealing the names of 4 artists that made it to the short list of this year’s awards. (Read the story here.) The insiders gave us the list hoping that its publication would deter President Arroyo from inserting names not chosen by the Council of Experts.
From that list in May, 3 names were announced by the Palace on Wednesday: Manuel Conde for cinema, Federico Aguilar Alcuaz for visual arts, and Lazaro Franciso for literature.
Why was Ramon Santos (for music), the choice of his peers, dropped from the list?
The 4 others that Malacañang named were Francisco “Bobby” Mañoza for architecture, Jose “Pitoy” Moreno for fashion design, Magno Jose Carlo Caparas for visual arts and film (which makes us wonder how it is different from the “cinema” category where Conde is being recognized), and Alvarez.
President Arroyo has exercised her “prerogative” to alter the list of National Artists thrice before to accommodate political allies like Alejandro Roces, Francisco “Soc” Rodrigo, and Abdulmari Imao—despite protests from the artists who would have wanted the credibility and relevance of the awards preserved. Did these well-meaning artists actually expect her to heed their calls now?

Politics in art or the art in politics? ... this is bad ...
What do we expect? Politics is everywhere, I'm sure kahit sa mga prestigious choral competitions abroad meron nito ...
bad for the artisits ... haaay.

well, this is not necessarily the right forum to discuss the issue of conferring national artists, but since andrea veneracion of the madz became a national artist several years back, the relevance of the issue here becomes more apparent. it only takes one rotten apple to ruin the whole bunch. what more if there are a couple?
yes, i think some of the awardees this year do not deserve to be (or shouldn't yet be) national artists. I cringed when I learned that CARLO J. CAPASRAS becomes one for, of all things, visual arts and film! I guess his massacre and panday movies really did it for him.
so to all budding national artists out there, LET'S MAKE MORE MASSACRE FILMS:lol:!!!!

Moving on...
Congrats to Novo for winning 1st prize in the polyphonic category in Torrevieja and maintaining the tradition of excellence of Filipino choirs in Torrevieja! E-coli, UE won the habanera category and not the polyphonic. Just to summarize the achievements of Filipino choirs in Torrevieja in recent years:
2004 - Madz won two major prizes: 1st places in the Habanera and Polyphonic categories
2005 -UPSA won three prizes, one major prize and two special prizes: 1st place in the polyphonic category, best interpretation of a habanera, and the prix du public
2008 - UEC won 1st place in the habanera category
2009 - Novo won 1st in polyphonic
In terms of money prize, Madz got a whopping E22,000! UPSA came in second with around E14,000. UEC, third at E12,000. And Novo, E10,000 for their 1st place win.
Just makes me proud to be a Filipino chorister! Blow out naman dyan!*okay*

Fury over Arroyo’s choice of national artists
ANNIE RUTH C. SABANGAN, GMANews.tv
08/01/2009 | 06:29 PM
| | More
Artists are protesting President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s decision to confer the national artist award to an official of the agency that screens the nominees for the prestigious title, and a movie director whose nomination had been rejected twice.
Critics said Cecille Guidote Alvarez should have had the delicadeza to refuse because she is the executive director of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), which administers the award together with the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). Alvarez heads the NCAA secretariat that receives nominations for national artists.
“She should have not allowed herself to be named as national artist. She’s close to the President. Nobody in the committee thought that she deserved to be named," national artist for literature Bienvenido Lumbera told GMANews.TV. Lumbera is the chairman of the Concerned Artists of the Philippines.
Mrs. Arroyo recently conferred the award to seven individuals: Manuel Conde for cinema; Federico Aguilar Alcuaz for visual arts; Lazaro Francisco for literature; Francisco “Bobby" Mañoza for architecture; Jose "Pitoy" Moreno for literature; Magno Jose Carlo Caparas for visual arts and film; and Alvarez for theater.
Lumbera said Caparas’ nomination was twice rejected by two NCAA panels. “He (Caparas) was first proposed as a nominee for literature, but the committee rejected him. He was again proposed as nominee for visual artist but the panel again turned him down."
He said the title conferred to Caparas “appeared to have duplicated" that of Conde.
Film Academy of the Philippines director general Leo Martinez was also surprised how Caparas landed on the elite list.
"He was obviously added by Malacañang," Martinez said on Spot.ph. Caparas, a comics writer who later turned to film making, is known to be a vocal supporter of Mrs. Arroyo.
Not in shortlist
According to Lumbera, who is a member of the “final selection committee" of the NCAA, they, did not include Alvarez in the shortlist of nominees that was submitted to President Arroyo last May.
Guidelines in the nominations for national artists state that “NCCA and CCP Board members and consultants and NCCA and CCP officers and staff are automatically disqualified from being nominated."
Lumbera said President Arroyo had “no respect for established processes for selecting national artists…why would she name someone who heads the commission that administers the selection of candidates for national artists?"
But Alvarez said she was entitled to the award. “Before you make a judgment, read my achievements first as an artist. Was I an idiot before I became a national artist?" Alvarez told GMANews.TV.
Alvarez said her recognition included the Ramon Magsaysay public service award for the arts that she received in 1972, the CCP Gawad Sining Award for Literature, and the Outstanding Women in the Nation's Services for her contributions in promoting Philippine art and culture.
She denied lobbying for the award, saying President Arroyo “never talked to me about it." Alvarez said the President has the prerogative to pick other national artists not included in the NCCA and CCP shortlist.
Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said Alvarez “didn’t deliberate on herself…She was chosen."
Lumbera said the NCAA and CCP panel only submitted four names to Mrs. Arroyo: Conde, Alcuaz, Lazaro, and Ramon Santos, who was nominated as national artist for music. Santos was not included in Mrs. Arroyo’s list of awardees.
Boycott
National artist for visual arts Benedicto Reyes Cabrera agreed with Lumbera. He said the four additional awardees “did not go through deliberation."
“There used to be prestige. Well, since the presidency of Ramos there has been an understanding that the President can add one choice … there was Carlos Quirino (historical literature) , Alejandro " Anding ‘ Roces (literature) , Abdulmari Asia Imao (visual arts). But this time (Mrs. Arroyo) added four," said Cabrera in an interview with Spot online magazine.
“They might as well just appoint (their own choices) and not go through the whole process. I will boycott the awards. I will not march. I will not mention any names but we heard that there was one very influential person who helped manipulate the results," Cabrera said.
"Sabi nga ng mga artists, it won’t be a 'parangal' kundi 'pagdadalamhati' (Artists are saying it is not a tribute but a time for mourning). It’s sad. The awards have been debased. One can just lobby for anyone. Hindi na ‘yung peers ang nagde-decide (It’s no longer the peers who decide). Our opinion doesn’t mean anything," he added.
National artists receive lifetime benefits including a monthly pension, medical and life insurance, arrangement for a state funeral, a place of honor at national state functions, and recognition at cultural events. - GMANews.TV

Thought for the day: Is it me, or when somebody says that this choir is good or, is he ususally refering to the sound of the choir per se? It seems that the posts here generally refer to a choir that's good only becuse "maganda ang tunog nila, etc." But if you ask me, it's not only the sound in itself that should be the sole consideration in the critical analysis of a choir. Style for me ranks even higer than the sound per se. A choir with a extraordinary sound eventually becomes extremely boring if they sound the same in a negro spirirtual as in a madrigal, or a Filipino folksong as in a french chanson. The repertoire factor should also be considered. I have high respect and awe for the choirs that dare tackle "difficult" repertoire, specially if they build their reputation on it (*wink, wink* at Philippine Chamber Choir hehehehhehe)
arnhem: congratulations (and tot he other PExers who are part of the La Salle Chorale as well :) ! I really wanted to watch you guys but....well, until your next concert then. Hmmmm, we have three new CD's right now: the one we recorded last year (An Offering), the one we recorded in Germany (self-titled album - but it kinda sucks if you ask me), and the CD with the boottleg recordings on MD that we did on various concerts in Europe. But I personally recomend the bootleg CD because it contains the "official" recordings of the Tour, Cork, and Slovenia competitions (those were from the copies they gave us). If you want to get a copy (and for those PExers who want na rin) just e-mail me personally and I'll get back to you :)

PS. Whatever happened to the 1st Phil Int'l Choral Competition?
Why the sudden shift to "national"? Wala bang foreign choirs na sumali? Can Ms. Abrera or whoever answer this question? May na-offend ba?
I think historic 'tong event na 'to. Was so excited bout this and i know this has been a buzz since last year among university choir members... Sana man lang nagkaayos ang mga forces ng choral industry sa atin at nakipag-join hands with the CCP/NCCA (assuming there has been a rift)...
Bizarre. Like i said this is the first time we are holding an event like this. Was kind of romanticizing a vision of a grand Fiesta for Philippine Choral Scene and the throng of Philippine Choral Music Forces and Elements with that unique event.
Kalungkot... kalungkot.

para palang mga competitions under musica mundi. most if not all, are given awards...
actually tama rin *** para masabi na you are all winners. to give credits din naman sa lahat ng choirs who did their best. but the gold , silver and bronze are more of a level than an award or a prize kaya nga walang cash prize na kalakip. but since its a competition. there are winners and non-winners. what matters in the competition is the prize and the ranking.
kaya sa mga choirs, strive to land to the top 3 spot always. in some other competitions like Varna and Gorizia i think, they award up to the 5th prize. thats also good. but to get a bronze and land in the 20th spot at magpapress release that you won is really funny.
Congratulations to all the 5 winner choirs in the CCP competition.

I am not saying na magsabungan ang mga univ choirs sa competition (although honestly, minsan, naimaginine na namin yan one sunny morning while bored and without anything to talk about --- like what happens if the big four chorale groups plus other groups in fighting form all join one competition, at 7 ang adjudicators, all world renowned at walang pinoy para walang kulay ang results).
Read through the lines. I do not mean harm nor STRIFE. And i mean it in every positive, imaginable way.
*** or maybe i wanna say i've been combing the net for posts about the event pero puro announcement lang. Oh well it's just a rant.
I heard things kasi. And it was quite disheartening. So i wanna make sure na walang issue. I am hoping na you know what i mean. Sana may conductor o choir alumnus na in-touch with the pinoy choral scene na mag shed ng light re: this i've been ranting about.
I feel bad na i seem some sort of a cynical detractor here.
I am wishing though na sana, sana. Na exaggeration lang yung mga narinig ko.

mukha namang naging successful yung 1st ccp national choral competition.. for me, the sad part lang is yung naging national n ln siya na supposedly ay international.. i was expecting foreign choirs to join.. :( sad sad..

maraming sumali na pinoy choirs sa busan last year.. ngayong year kaya? any news kung sino ang mga sasali na chorale groups? i'd be very happy to know.. :D

My thoughts exactly haha.:D :mecry::confused:
Pero someone confirmed to me that it wasn't as bad as i thought (sana... sorry nagiispekyulate), and that it was largely due to the Flu scare, recession et al. Tsaka global hatak powers nadin in a way.
Yah. Just wanna share something.
One sunday, nagjogging ako sa UP, then napadaan ako sa may FC. Grabe me narinig akong parang mga anghel (seryoso, heard a straight, pure tone hovering above CAL) from afar. Then i moved closely, aba UPSA pala ito. Sat there for an hour...
I think they were practicing (whhatt, practice lang yun?!) probably some madrigal or something by Palestrina. Was with a friend that time who then identified certain batchmates.
Sabi ko, Whaw! Naknampooch ah! Me bago na kayong Fan.

i watched the festival video on youtube entitled the week that was, and it looked successful naman.. perhaps the ah1n1 scare is a possible factor as well.. i heard the int'l. competition in korea scheduled last july (i think?) was cancelled because of the same issue..
haha.. looks like upsa just earned a new fan.. upsa never fails to amaze people as usual.. may iba talaga silang sound.. :D so you are from up then?
ano na kaya balita sa mga top choral groups ngayon? and please tell me kung may alam kayong mga magcocompete soon.. including yung sa busan.. :D

UPSA does have that refined sound similar to European choirs. Before I consider only the Madz to be the best UP choir. After hearing UPSA in one of their concerts (plus in their excellent youtube vids!), I have also become a fan. Do hope they follow the Madz one day and win the EGP as well. Not impossible, I think.

:rotflmao::rotflmao::rotflmao:crispypata,
and
Madrigal...noon. And FYI, hindi puro U.P. ang members nila noon 'no, 1/4 ng members nila noon eh from UST din...at hindi U.P. Madz ang dala nilang pangalan 'no nung lumaban sila...PHILIPPINE MADRIGAL SINGERS ang flagship name nila.Unlike in UST Singers, purely Thomasians ang members 'no...hindi nag-pi-pirate.And nung lumaban sila noon, ang dala nilang pangalan ay UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS-MANILA SINGERS,and LUCIANO PAVAROTTI said that "...the singers from MANILA that are from the Santo Tomas University are the best voices that i have heard" (the very word that came out from Pavarotti's mouth).
and
Kaya po wala ang UST SINGERS sa International Chorale Competititon that was held last year sa dito eh kasi po nasa EUROPEAN TOURS AND COMPETITIONS sila, actually, BEFORE pa sila umalis eh NCCA (NCCA, hindi po NCAA-diba league to ng the colles ng manila?) na mismo ang nag-invite sa kanila, but kailangan nilang lumaban para patunayan yung title nila overseas,as usual, they have defended their title.
FYI, hindi DLSU Chorale ang inimbitahan to be with Madrigal kundi FIRST choice nila eh UST SINGERS...my cousin told me (by the way she's a former DLSU Chorale prexy) na yun mismong conductor nila (DLSU) ang nagprisinta sa NCCA,para naman mag-karoon naman ng EXPOSURE ang Choir ninyo...as a part of your TOTAL packaging sa public.Kasi daw, U.P. merong Madz, UST may A.S.(Action Singers) and Ateneo merong ACGC.Ang La Salle wala, kaya sila na mismo ang nagprisinta, sayang nga naman ang binubuo ninyong advertisement sa public na "the Best" kayo sa laht ng bagay.HELLOOOOOOOOOOOO!?, ang mga sinalihan nilang competition (DLSU Chorale), hindi kilala,pa'no ang kalaban nila JAPAN, MALAYSIA and others, mostly from asian countries ang kalaban nila, in short, madadaling kalaban...ang UST Singers 'di na lumaban don kasi mag-aaksaya lang daw sila ng
panahon cause they will surely win there.hehehehe...walang asaran...sinasabi ko lang ang totoo...based from my cousin's statements.

Tsk. Tsk. I remember what my Spiritual Warfare Teacher told me. Demons do nothin but instigate/incite/inspire/start fear, prejudice, strife, division, envy, resentment etc.
Quote tayo ng verse:
Unang Timoteo 6:4
BTW. UST Singers and PNU Chorale had a joint exercise sa UST last Tuesday, I heard. How was it?

Self-Righteous.

= convinced of one's own righteousness especially in contrast with the actions and beliefs of others : narrow-mindedly moralistic

Everyone from a choir MOST LIKELY has friends from other choirs. We know that too well to hurl even the slightest, slickest snapbacks to the good choirs where some of our friend might be.
And ask people in general. Pag may nababasa padin tayong ganyan can we still close our IE browsers nang wala man lang nasagi ni isang iota ng kaluluwa mo after?
Ano lang, annoying na lang talaga na, after reading and rereading the forum several times. May ganoon padin. Sabagay... ganun talaga ang tao minsan.
Pero kahit ganoon pa man. Nakakalungkot padin.
Pure passion begets love, not "strife".
Rankings, absolutely no problem with that. So namethattune, in the spirit of free expression, carry on.
Pero Hokuto, am pretty sure both synergy07 and amadeusmozart would really find it hard to smile (genuinely) after their exchange most expecially if this happened face to face.
The point = may malisya.
Pinatubo.
But the end still does not justify the means.

yes indeed. the madz don't brag the titlessssssssssssssssssss they've won because they know that they have nothing to prove. they're simply the BESSSSSSSSSSSSTTT!!!! whenever the mads have a concert, they are simply introduced as "THe PHilippine Madrigal Singers". then the honor and the glory glow in every song they perform. their performances make us say, "yes, Indeed! they're the best in the World! the Most beautiful sound on Earth!". unlike the ust singers', when they perform, they have to brag that they are the choir of the world, won 40 plus first prizes ect, {(but, never won the European choral grand prix. they tried it twice but failed to win!!)).. the fact that, one of the members, has to introduce themselves as "Multi awarded" is a kind of defense mechanism in order to 'supply' what is lacking in their group. that is not a kind of cherishing but a kind of "covering up" of their deficiency.

I both AGREE and DISAGREE with this one.
I agree that the Choir of the World is not as prestigious as the EGP or even the 7 EGP competitions (I think there is already a new addition to the EGP family, from Eastern Europe). It's just as prestigious as Neuchatel, a biennial competition.
I disagree with amadeusmozart when he implied that past titles DO NOT make a choir. Titles, past or present, will always be an integral part of a choir's REPUTATION. It's the same as with Gloria Diaz, Paeng Nepumoceno, Nora Aunor, Briliante Mendoza, Juan Luna.
So I say to all Veneracions, Carpios, Calalangs, Manguiats, and Navarros out there: ipagyabang ang mga titulo nyo! 'Cause your wins will always be proof of our country's excellence in choral music and an eternal source of our country's pride! *okay*

The Ateneo de Manila Glee Club won an EGP qualifier, NOT the Ateneo Chamber Singers (ACS). I agree that they should be proud of their achievements. but thier pride should be grounded on reality. on facts. being proud of something you really have is different from being proud in order to cover up one's defects and frustrations. honesty is the shadow that should follow true and genuine pride.

So I say to all Veneracions, Carpios, Calalangs, Manguiats, and Navarros out there: ipagyabang ang mga titulo nyo! 'Cause your wins will always be proof of our country's excellence in choral music and an eternal source of our country's pride! *okay*
I agree that they should be proud of their achievements. but thier pride should be grounded on reality. on facts. being proud of something you really have is different from being proud in order to cover up one's defects and frustrations. honesty is the shadow that should follow true and genuine pride.
watched the ppo concert yesterday. nakakuha ako ng balcony seat (nakakalula, para kang malalaglag sa steepness ...). panalo ang ninth symphony! parang less than 100 ang singers pero ang tunog, parang doble ng dami nila! the audience gave a rousing standing ovation in the end! with the exception of the tenor soloist (na parang kulang ang dating ng boses for me), the rest of the soloists were good. ang ppo may good moments and not so good moments. there are times na parang off ang rhythm. but generally, matutuwa si beethoven sa kinalabasan!
congrats uste, upsa, and acgc! halatang-halata na magagaling kayong lahat!!!

infairness to the tenor no..he's magaling and considered as one of the best tenors in the philippines...siguro di mu lang na appreciate ang part niya kc nasa taas ka..nxt time bumili ka ng tiket na orchestra(middle) and choose the better seat.

i was there also sa ccp. sorry, but i have to agree with alanangmaisip. i was seated at the back of the orchestra. ccp has actually good acoustics as i've watched several productions way back. it's not that hindi nagproproject ang tenor. yes had a good solo, but when they sang as quartet, medyo stick out ang dating ng voice nya. hindi blended with the others. something's off with the texture of his voice. but overall, i think the concert was excellent. the best ang grand choir! kung sinama mo pa ang madz at up concert chorus, ay, perfect!*okay*

actually kulang yung grand choir... Besides the Madz and UP Concert Chorus, dapat kasama pa yung UP Staff Chorale, UP Cherubim and Seraphim, UP Himig Yakal, UP Molave Chorale, UP Statistics Chorale, UP MassComm Chorale, UP Vocal Ensemble, UP Med Choir, UPLB Chorale, UP Cebu CHorale, UP Muiag-ao Chorale at UP Open University Chorale... Pagkasama yan, tunay na perfect talaga.... Pwede ring isingit ang Dulaang UP at Kontragapi. *okay*

Are you trying to start a fire? Obviously, puro UP groups ang sinama mo, even the unknown ones. Is this a joke? Are you being sarcastic? I'd rather have UE Chorale than UP Himig Yakal. Tsk, tsk...you're asking for it... :grrr:

OK pala itong MBC Chorale Festival, last year's judges were Ed Manguiat, Jojo Velasco and Nonoy Diestro. :) And of course, the prize money is Php100,000. Not bad eh?
Do you know of choirs joining this year? Help spread the word o: Auditions begin on Nov 3 in Laoag - NCC auditorium. They are also going around Cebu, Iloilo, Baguio and even all the way to Mindanao - in Davao.
