Hoy, hoy, hoy Kabron!!!!!!!

Ibong adarna....I never said that all the choirs souded beautiful...seems that You dint understand what I said....Im challenging you if u have the guts to tell me you name and your choir to show your worth. The madz never forced anyone to watch...I directed my previous post to you coz I know for a fact that you cant back your statement regarding the proceeds of the series. That was not just an opinion....you said....malamang which meant for sure...so, back it up...anu ba choir mo?Its so sad how you react on things theatrically just to get away with what you say. Thats not drama...its something that you probably werent able to experience thats why your so off and bitter....i never asked anyone not to comment about the et al choirs....read my post again so as not to prove yourself stupid...i simply asked everyone not to attack what we stand for.

CHELow
Jul 9, 2005, 06:15 PM
By the way, I dint join the et al coz Im busy takin up my second degree so i dont think im an agrieved party with respect to your comments.respond intelligently...i only stand for the people behind the project and the essense of it all.

CHELow
Jul 9, 2005, 06:19 PM
Not to attack what we stand for unless you can back it up.cummon...pls be intellingent with your replys....pinoyexchange...SPEAK YOU MIND...and not your stupidity.

CHELow
Jul 9, 2005, 06:27 PM
Talagang nagpapasalamt ako sa mga nagcocomment...THANK YOU! but for you to accuse the madz et al....back it up first....amd for those who says that malaking kalokohan ang ginagawa sa inyo....the madz never forced you to watch,,,,mahilig kayo manuod but if your intelligent enough then you should know which to watch...

CHELow
Jul 9, 2005, 06:40 PM
by the way, dissing is not equal to commenting...commenting to help is good....but to dissing is something that comes from a person with no credibility, heart or knowledge of what he or she is saying.coz its not backed up with facts nor the right information.so again....i never asked anyone to stop commenting about other or any choir.

Chelow, the more you react, especially to comments of "stupid" people here, the more it will never end.

I say silence is the best response, tutal, intelligent Pexers would never believe in their below-the-belt comments.

Remember, ang pikon ay laging talo. Tama ang friend mo when he/she advised you na wag mo nang patulan. You're just wasting your time with these rumor-mongers. Worse you're bringing down your defenses and opening yourself and Madz up to more attacks. You're digging yourself a deeper grave.

I believe in Madz and their worthy endeavors. I just don't think you made the right decision when you over-replied to nonsensical comments here.

Keep your peace at wag nang patulan. :(

Zion, thanks....and i apologize....i actually did over reply. I just did that for the benefit of those dear to my heart, the ones who worked and works hard for the madz and the madz et al...sleepless nights, cancelled personal schedules, financial sacrifices...hay...i hope you understand. I dint exactly experience em all but comming from the singers work force, we had enough sacrifices already eh yung mga execom pa. La lang...some of them are getting sick na due to lack of rest.Naawa lang po ako sakanila. Peace...at first, i tried to post to inform those who dont realize the purpose of the et al but i guess i got a bit hot headed when i got to read the other posts..hindi naman ako kasi talaga nagpopost dito eh, im just a reader:) peace....zion, thanks again...for the et al singers...guess zions right. Just post to inform and dont add insult to injury anymore:) Peace again.

Oo nga. Mabuhay pa rin ang UPSA! It's still something. :)

So... Over sa kagandahan ang Wernigerode! I never imagined it to be sooo beautiful! Pag may isnow dun, feeling mo Christmas Town talaga!

Proceeding to World Choral Symposium on August 1 to give lecture on Southeast Asian Choral Music.

Siyanga pala, kung gusto ninyong isali ko ang pangalan ninyo for recommendation to the Polyfollia festival sa France (hanapin nyo na lang sa Internet kung ano ito), kung saan ako'y isang adviser, just email me na lang. At!... ang inyong choirlowla ay member ng artistic committee to the next World Choral Symposium in Denmark in 2008. The committee is composed of 4 Danes, and 3 members from all over the world; so bale ang inyong choirmuthrels ay one of three. Odivavong... Shanga pala, ang Polyfollia Festival, if I'm not mistaken, ay libre ang pamasahe papuntang France ng buong choir. Yun ang sa pagkaintindi ko. Will have to get back to you on that.

It will be veeeerrryy interesting this year, don't you think?

Paano ba mag-insert ng image ditrils? Hindi ako marunong mag-tag ng image. Anong iniinsert sa gitna nung dalawang image tags? Yung file name? Paano lalabas ang pichure? Help!

yUCK_Fou!
Jul 23, 2005, 06:41 PM
Hahaha! :D

About posting images, ganito yan.

Example:

[img.]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v627/carlski/ohesus.jpg[/img.]

[IMG]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v627/carlski/ohesus.jpg

Okie?

So bukas reconnected na ako ulit. In the meantime, tiis sa Pacific Internet dial-up.

Hi papabur! Long time no hear!

Osha, pasukan na ulit bukas, pagkatapos i-cancel ang lahat ng work for a 20-minute speech. chiz... Mabuhay ang Federal Republic of the Philippines!

:grrr:

Hi! Thanks to everyone who congratulated us! We're so happy that after all the hard work (learning 15 songs for the competition, and ESP. raising the money), we were able to earn a victory for the PHILIPPINES! :) We still can't get over the very warm reception we got from the other choirs, from the locals in Preveza, Greece, and from the Pinoys in Athens... it was really an amazing experience, even more so because it was our first international trip.

So... I'd like to invite everyone to our homecoming concert, entitled "AMAZING GREECE" (hehe).

JULY 31 (SUN), 5pm
Philamlife Auditorium (U.N. Ave., Manila)

* Repertoire includes all 15 songs from the Preveza competition (and a few others). We'll also be showing some pics & videos. :)
* Tickets are at P200. We'll also be selling our CDs for P350. Tickets will be sold st the gate starting 4 p.m. and doors open by 4:30.

I really hope some of you can make it. :)

Hi All,

First time ko sa thread na ito! Member ako ng isang community choir sa Angono - the hometown of the Maestro Luci San Pedro!

Anyway, I was able to watch the concert of UA&P Chorale last Friday sa UA&P. It was okay, but I have a lot to say about the choir.
Observation lang po ito ha, constructive naman:

May tendecy kasi na gumalaw yung upper body bacoz of singing (high notes).

3. Smile. It's free anyway. Sana may variation ng facial expression.

5. Careful of the diction ang phrasing. Yung ibang songs parang magulo kasi hindi maganda ang transition from simple to complicated segment ng song.

Yun lang, but I still enjoyed the Friday concert, bitin nga lang!

Goodluck to all the Choirs competing abroad!

By the way, kelan ang next concert ng MADZ?

Hi inis! Noted about the facial expression... it's always a challenge for me especially when reaching those high notes. Not moving can be very hard as well (I'm one of the sop 1s). :) I'm just so glad I didn't cough because I was still recovering from the flu last Friday, buti nalang I was able to sing and some sound came out. :)

We're so proud! Congrats to UPSA

Is UPSA the first choir to win all 3 distinguished prizes in Torrevieja history?

If this is the case, then we should all be proud that we are Filipinos. After the history-making feat of the Madz in the same competition last year, another Filipino choir in the name of UPSA made history again in the land of our colonial conquerors.

Yes, Spain, we are proud to be indios! *okay*

UPSA won 1 major prize and 2 special prizes, making the group the most awarded in the 2005 edition of the contest:

Major prize: Primer Premio de Polifonía

Special prizes: Premio Especial "Francisco Vallejos"

Ahihihihi! CONGRATS PO! ;)

Yup, it's about time UPCC show their worth again! I'm sure they won't let Madz and UPSA do all the winning, would they? ;)

As the "third force" in the UP choral triumvirate (the othe two being Madz and UPSA), they should show the choral community that they are indeed the choir the late great Prof. Paguio was so proud of!

WORLD CHALLENGE: PLEASE VOTE FOR THE PHILIPPINES!

To vote, please open www.theworldchallenge.co.uk and click the picture of Philippine coconet.

Did you know that the Philippines' coconut geotextile ( a.k.a. coconet) for soil erosion control has been chosen as one of the 12 finalists in Newsweek and BBC's (British Broadcasting Corporation) World's World Challenge?

The World Challenge is basically a competition/search designed at identifying groups or individuals all over the world whose projects have contributed great impact at grass roots level.

A documentary about Philippine Coconut geotextile or coconet industry will be shown on the BBC World cable channel on September 24 around 8:30 GMT and will also be featured in the August 29 special issue of Newsweek.

"The World Challenge" already offers a tremendous exposure and publicity to our flourishing Philippine coconut geotextile industry and to our Philippine coconut fiber exporters. But it would be great liberation for our country, which has been getting very bad publicity nowadays, to win this prestigious competition.

To vote, please open www.theworldchallenge.co.uk and click the picture of Philippine coconet.

Please help us campaign for more voters by forwarding this message to your co-worker, friends and relatives.

Thank you.

Hi,
It's so nice to hear that you are interested in choral art. Unfortunately, the availability of choral pieces here in our countryis quite limited. Have you tried going to bookwagon (megamall 5th floor, and powerplant 5th floor) there are some good finds there. You may want to check libraries of music schools such as UP College of Music, UST conservatory, Asian Institute of Liturgy and Music (AILM) etc. You may also want to start downloading free pieces from www.cpdl.org, a good resource for period music from great composers before the copyright age. The best resource would be choirs themselves, you would definitely benefit in attending choral concerts and befriending conductors and choir members, who would be quite willing to share their pieces. Which brings into the subject, you may be interested in attending the AILM Anniversary Performances this month, featuring some of the renowned choirs in the Philippines. here is the schedule:

The AILM Anniversary

Good luck for your search.

Of course, more exciting concerts to come: the two choirs of Arwin Tan are on for tomorrow: Novo Concertante and UA&P Chorale, one of their rare joint appearances! I hope to welcome you all tomorrow! At syempre all the other days until Friday the 30th! Bongga!

Let's go to more live concerts instead of just hearing them on CD. Live performances are a great venue to learn more about our art. And to see and be seen, of course! See you there!

Hello PEx peeps,

Another fantabulous night has passed with the UA&P Chorale and the Novo Concertante. Ang gaganda ng mga kanta, lalo na yung mga first time kong nadinig. I was impressed by the UA&P Chorale, na first time ko lang marinig in a concert, with their "direk prom yurop" sound. And of course magical din ang Novo, especially the new pieces.

Mamayang gabi (Monday night), it's the turn of Manila Chamber Singers to enchant us with songs. Won't you come? We are enjoying so much these concerts na gusto ko lang i-share sa inyo ang enjoyment. Kaya go! All choral roads now lead to AILM! (Chiz. How presumptuous. hahahahaha!!!)

But seriously, we must see you there one of these nights. It's such a pity if you miss these groups in their prime.

See you tonight!

(One of these nights mauubusan na talaga ako ng superlatives! hahahahaha!!!) :D

Punta kayo tonight! The Hail Mary the Queen Children's Choir is singing. C'mon guys, goes na kayo to AILM!

If you missed Hail Mary the Queen's performance last night, malaki ang nawala sa inyo. The children were simply astonishing. Grabe ang intonation nila, sobra sa pagkaperfect! How do they do it? I'm sure it has a lot to do with Tess and Jude Roldan's influence on the musical discipline of the kids. As in, swak na swak! I certainly believe that this choir is truly world class.

Nakita ko na ang programme nila, with the matching TWO world premieres ng dalawang piyesa... I'm sure it's not worth going all the way to AILM diba?

The Madz were in fighting form last night. I swear, you should've heard their newly-refurbished La Guerre. A lot of details were brought out in this batch's rendition, some of which I never noticed before. For that matter, a lot attention to details, phrasing, and style were lovingly put into the repertoire that night. Indeed, it was a most musically pleasurable way to end the day. To those who missed it, major sayang talaga....

Heard from the grapevine that UPSA is accepting talented non-UP singers. You might want to ask around UP College of Music regarding their whereabouts.

Also, they just arrived several days ago from their successful stint in Europe. Their homecoming concert is slated on October 6 at the UP Church of the Risen Lord, I think.

Can anybody from UPSA post some details regarding their homecoming concerts? I'm pretty sure a lot are curious to hear their award-winning sound that conquered Torrevieja this year.

To celebrate its triumphant European tour, UPSA is giving two homecoming concerts—on Oct. 6, 7 p.m., at the Church of the Risen Lord in UP Diliman and on Oct. 22, 7 p.m. at the Philamlife Auditorium on UN Avenue in Manila.

These concerts will feature some of their winning songs like Toledo’s “Alitaptap,” Fuentes/Sanchez’s “Tu,” and Guiseppe Bianco’s “In Laude” and some more popular tunes like “La Vie En Rose, Someone Like You, Broken Vow, This is the Moment” and well-loved Filipino selections like “Maalaala Mo Kaya” and “Caturog Na, Nonoy.”

hiya,

pagkatapos niong mag train, may quartet exam. SATB malamang. 100 kami noon andami!! kaloka!!! mag jujudge *** members alumni and sir ed. so pagnakapasok ka. mag train ka naman for 1 year. then may exam ka ulit. tapos member ka na!

Just watched UPSA's homecoming at the Church of the Risen Lord and what could I say?! Galing! Over sa pino ang tunog nila, particularly the sops! I'm guessing that a lot of their sops are straight tone, which would give them an advantage in European choral competitions. My favorites in the concert are the first part which includes their competition pieces, Alitaptap (which seems to get better very performance), Yanni's Aria (effortless singing of the duet), and the ultra-hip Joyful, Joyful.

UPSA deserves every award they got in Europe! Congrats Mr. Manguiat! May you serve as an inspiration to budding Filipino choirs who also dream of making it big abroad and giving pride to our motherland!

UPSA, job very well done and welcome back! *okay*

Hi guys and gals!

I definitely agree with zion! UPSA's sound (i think) is a benchmark for excellent choral blending.

It was an unexpected fortune to catch their rehearsals at the UP Bahay ng Alumni last Monday while having dinner at Chocolate Kiss. Ecstatic indeed! My friend and I decided to stay outside to hear their own interpretation of Ama Namin by Fidel Calalang. It was my first time to hear the "climax passage" delivered with such brilliant harmonic clarity. Galing! The choir has achieved the needed discipline to stretch the blend across the range demands of the song. *okay*

I have observed how the conductor has put so much importance in the tools and techniques that help improve blending in his rehearsal methodology. He would always emphasize "same vowel" execution and "support" as keys to achieving a good blend. (A great learning for me as I prepare my choir for the Regional NAMCYA Competitions :) )

Also, something I observed is that the conductor generally imposes stringent rules on the execution of every passage of the song "without" citing a fair artistic rationale and musical bakground of the passage. I hope this will not limit the musicality of the choir. ;)

Yun lang! Magandang gabi!

hiya,

pagkatapos niong mag train, may quartet exam. SATB malamang. 100 kami noon andami!! kaloka!!! mag jujudge *** members alumni and sir ed. so pagnakapasok ka. mag train ka naman for 1 year. then may exam ka ulit. tapos member ka na!

aun! gudluck sa iyo. punta ka lang sa UP college of Music. tanong ka dun kung kelan sila nagpapaaudition. nangangailangan ata sila ng mga tenors *****. hehehehehe

herorot> ei, maraming salamat po doon sa info. actually, i'm currently a member ng Coro San Benildo pero i intend na on my last term dito sa CSB e sasali na ako sa kanila. that means, i have to quit my group there. sana nagtatanggap sila ng bass kasi bass ako and gusto ko na mag-improve pa. ei, when ba ang practices nila? nakalimutan ko na kasi yung isang friend ko e sumali rin diyan.

btw, i just thought of this while i was on the road. what if buo tayo ng choir na puro PEx members? tapos kung sino sa inyo ang music major o galing sa isang bigating choir e siya na lang ang mag-conduct. what do you think?

I know it's a bit off topic as of the moment but I have a question for all those who have been part of touring groups.

How should funds be handled?

It's given that through the generosity of hosting communities abroad, the choirs that visit get to raise funds for the group and its members. However, I have heard that all sorts of problems have risen from different groups. Maybe this is something we can talk about so that future touring groups may gather tips from the "oldies" so as to not encounter the same problems. It's something I know we're all aware of but are afraid to talk about. No worries. Maybe as long as we're discreet about our discussion (STRICTLY NO NAMES!), this can be helpful. We don't need to know who it was. Just the lesson learned. At least for me, I won't be talking about any recent group para hindi na mag-ungkatan pa. Also, I'm just mentioning examples to show na talagang nangyayari yun.

Probably the biggest concern would be WHO handles the money. Should it be the conductor, the members, or maybe an external manager?

I have heard of this community based group that entrusted its funds to its conductor. However, he ran back home to manila carrying everything with him. The choir had to sing in the streets to earn extra. Fortunately, it was towards the end of the tour and they had their plane tickets and passports with them. When they got home, it was discovered that their leader had a project he had to finish and was in debt trying to do so. Last I heard, everything's been settled and he apologized. However, this doesn't dismiss the fact that he did disappear with all their funds.

This next one happened about a decade ago with a very low profile group that wanted to make a name for itself. They went on a fundraising tour and basically failed to distribute the funds and expenses according to the original agreement. The conductor, being afraid of any money issues, decided to let the officers handle the finances. There were about 3 to 4 people/members directly involved in the computation and record-keeping. It was revealed when they came home. During their first general meeting after the trip, they were asked to present a detailed report of expenses and earnings to everyone. They were unable to present any proof that this amount was just what they earned. Eventually, the pressure of investigation led one member to squeal. Apparently, not everyone was getting what was promised. Some received less than the others. Some of those entrusted with the finances saw this as an opportunity to get even with those members he/she had personal conflicts with.

This last one involves a group that hired an external manager. The entire group thought everything was already settled before leaving, until the day they arrived at the airport and were asked to surrender a rather huge sum each for airport tax and additional bus fare around the countries. Kawawa naman ang mga kulang ang baon. They had to borrow money from each other just to pay up. The group was then a new travelling group and had no idea that that was way too much tax for travel around Europe, and was surprised at the added expense since everything was supposedly settled before the date of departure -- including land transportation.

As we can see, more and more choirs are venturing out into the international choral scene. Good! Kaya naman kasi. The thing is, as senior patrons and participants of this field, we might want to help out the newcomers. Let us not deny that common problems arise.

So, I want to know what's your take on all this. With some of the examples I've mentioned, you can tell that it's not easy to pick out just one. If you can't pick out WHO should be handling the money... maybe you can give a suggestion on HOW it could be done. No right or wrong siyempre. No single answer is above the rest. More answers means more suggestions to choose from and more importantly, more lessons learned. We've all had our experiences with our own groups. Tell us what are some things that worked for you, and what could be improved on.

P.S. I received messages from some of you asking and claiming to know kung sino ako... Let's just say that I've been around ;) I believe that anonimity allows me free expression of my thoughts.

"Money Is The Root Of All Evil"!

For the third night of AILM@25, ang taray ng Manila Chamber Singers under Joel Aquino! It was again a magical evening. (One of these nights mauubusan na talaga ako ng superlatives! hahahahaha!!!) :D

Punta kayo tonight! The Hail Mary the Queen Children's Choir is singing. C'mon guys, goes na kayo to AILM!

The Manila Chamber Singers will be having their 5th Anniversary Concert in November... Their repertoire include 3 Philippine premier songs and a lot more.. Abangan nyo nalang.. :)

Atsaka mga details naman like time, date and venue. Parang ang nangyayari kasi is that NAMCYA is an "open secret" in the choral world. Anyway, this is the only national choral competition in the Philippines so... sakay na!

Any info, anyone?

Yup. I've invited my friends and church choirmates to watch. Been hearing very good reviews about their last concert. It's always a pleasure to hear our award-winning choral groups, particularly the top 4 (for me, at least): Madz, UPSA, ACGC, and UST Singers, which all participated in the European Grand Prix at one time.

See you on Saturday.

So he really does need all our prayers and our support. Imagine niyo mag-isa siyang Pinoy na nandun sa harap ng sobrang galing na choir na yon and he's gonna be there as the embodiment of everything true and beautiful about the Philippine choral movement. So ayun, mula sa aming mga masugid na tagahanga mo (both active and passive members of this thread), goodluck and godspeed, Sir Jojo!

Hi QRST! The NAMCYA NCR regional competition is happening next Wednesday, Oct. 26, in the morning (don't know the exact time). It will be at the Philippine Cultural High School (Abad Santos St., Tondo, Manila). :) We'll be joining (UA&P Chorale). :)

choirmaster
Oct 24, 2005, 11:51 AM
Dapat mataas ang grade mo for that piece, tapos dapat matandaan ng judges ang interpretation mo for that song.

Yung special prizes are usually discussed after all the categories have been decided.

Considering the number of choirs applying for the Torrevieja competition, plus the high standard of competition (not to mention the fantabulous prize money, the highest in Europe at the moment), malaking halaga talaga pag nanalo ka sa Torrevieja.

It was not always the case. Nobody has heard about it, artistic standards were low, pero mataas na nuon pa ang prize money (in pesetas pa noon). Then some of my European choral conductor friends judged there (the same ones na nakikita ninyo na nagju-judge all over Europe), at sabi nila hindi pupwede ito... so they called on the organizers and decided to uplift the artistic standards of the competition. The rest is history, ika nga.

Salamat nga pala kay gianpaolo for the gudlak greetings. I'm leaving for Berlin on Friday, tapos I will rehearse the RIAS Kammerchor on Monday Oct. 31. Then I proceed to Copenhagen for a two-day meeting as a member of the artistic committee of the next World Choral Symposium 2008 sa Copenhagen, Denmark (I'm one of seven in the committee). Then I go to Saint Lo in France for the watchers' committee of the Polyfollia festival. Then I give a workshop there for about 300 participants, tapos fly home na.

In the meantime, binabawi ko yung sinabi ko in an earlier post.

Ang irerehearse ko pala with RIAS Kammerchor is Bach's motet Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied, Rheinberger's Cantus Missae, at Karai's De Profundis. I need your prayers on Monday Oct. 31. And yes, Jonathan Zaens is a member of RIAS (half member lang, yung tipong iisa ang pwesto pero dalawa kayong naghahalinhinan para kumanta, which suits his solo career just fine), and yes, nakatoka siya for that day. Hindi na ako makatulog sa nerbiyos! Balita ko from Jonathan, meron silang grading sheet for each conductor, tapos check lang sila ng check sa mga box, tapos isa sa mga last question (in German of course) goes something like: would you like to see this conductor again, (check one) as Principal Conductor; as Guest Conductor; not anymore! hahahaha!! Mas magandang pakinggan yung choices sa German: als Chefdirigent; als Gastdirigent; gar nichts. Omygasabelgas. Baka i-check nila yung huling box in my case... I will die! Chiz.

They are looking for a new Principal Conductor starting July 2007.

Congrats to UPSA for having a very good homecoming concert last Saturday! It was not perfect but your brilliance shone through your songs.

Ama Namin by F. Calalang was simply divine. You've made Calalang proud with your stirring rendition of his award-winning song. While UST's version is more powerful, yours is more fluid and affecting. And you've shown the audience why your rendition of Tu is the best habanera interpretation in Torrevieja. Kudos to your strangely poetic Alitaptap and your heart-felt rendition of the Filipino songs Maalaala Mo Kaya at Caturog na Nonoy (did I spell this one right?).

May you continue to grow as artists and as worthy ambassadors of our country. Truly, you are one of the best choirs the Philippines has ever produced! *okay*

ako rin! ang galing ng upsa last saturday. congrats po sa kanila for winning yung mga competitions nila sa europe. how i wish last term ko na dito para makalipat na ako sa kanila.

what i really like about them is their environment and how they treat yung mga kakilala ng mga dating members nila. kinausap nga ako ni sir ed e and binigyan ako and yung friend ko (dating upsa siya) ng shirt and food. naalala ko pa nga noon na after ng concert nila, they sang mga christmas songs. hindi ko napigilan ang sarili ko na sumabay sa kanila, especially sa mga songs na alam ko ang bass parts.

honestly, i really don't care kung abutin ako ng mga 4 years bago ako mapasama sa mga tours nila. all that i want is the training and mapahusay ko ang sarili ko.

btw, meron na bang a cappella version ng "O Hesus, Hilumin Mo"? saan ba makakakuha nun? :D

Congrats to UPSA for their successful show last Saturday. One innovative idea I liked on your concert was the video presentation during breaks where you showed your award-winning moments in the competitions that you joined in and your SRO concerts in Churches all over western Europe.

I've heard several stories about a few choirs who would "lie" about their wins abroad. At least UPSA has solid proof through their video. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. I say a video is worth a thousand pictures (frames per second, hehe).

To UPSA, the Philippine choral community salutes you on your success. :)

MANILA Oct. 26, 2005 - The University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) Chorale, conducted by Arwin Tan, won the Regional Competition of the National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA) for the College Choir Category, besting eight other schools from Metro Manila. Second prize went to Technological Institute of the Philippines Choral Society, and third prize to UST Liturgikon. The other participating choirs were Bagong Himig (PUP), FEU Symphony Chorus, Lyceum Philippines Chorale, Mapua Concert Singers, University of Makati Chorale, and UST College of Science Glee Club. The competition was held on October 26, Wednesday, at the Philippine Cultural High School in Tondo, Manila.

The UA&P Chorale will represent the National Capital Region (NCR) in the NAMCYA National Finals to be held between November 22-26 at the Cultural
Center of the Philippines, where they will be up against 15 other regional champions from all over the Philippines.

Last July, the UA&P Chorale bagged the three highest-ranking gold medals (first prizes) for the three categories they joined (Mixed Choirs, Chamber Choirs, and Mixed Youth Choirs), at the 23rd International Choral Festival of Preveza in Preveza, Greece. The International Jury Committee also awarded them a special prize for best performance of a folkloric song. The group,
established in 1995, is the resident choral ensemble of the University of Asia and the Pacific (Pasig City, Philippines).

For the past 31 years, NAMCYA has been principally instrumental in discovering major music talents from all over the country. This project involves annually some 1 million young musicians, trainors, and administrators, in a long and tedious process of selecting the best among them from all sixteen regions of the Philippines. Competitions are held from the divisional up to the regional levels, from which the First Prize winners come to Manila to vie for national honors in the main categories of Choral Performance, Solo Voice and Instruments, Family Ensemble, and Chamber Music in both western
art music and Philippine indigenous and folk music traditions. More info at http://www.namcya.org.ph.

Anyway, a friend of mine was able to talk with Mr. Manguiat, and he told my friend that one of the organizers approached him and congratulated UPSA after the contest. According daw to Mr. Manguiat, the organizer said that UPSA was the only choir who performed all their habaneras properly and excellently. So it was a puzzle for my friend why UPSA didn't get the top prize in the Habanera Category.

Oh well, at least UPSA (and all the other Filipino choirs in the contest) showed Torrevieja what the Filipino artist is really made of. *okay*

. May alam akong church-based choir na 35 years old ang average age ng mga miembro pero magaling, huh?!

Yan ang pangit sa bansa natin. May age discrimination na nga sa jobs, may age discrimination pa sa NAMCYA!

Hi abendlied! :)

I was only able to find out the names of two other choirs who will be competing in the finals: Voice of Cebu from Region VII and University of San Agustin Troubadours from Region VI. If anyone has information about the other finalists, please post a reply :)

About the repertoire... we were asked to prepare 7 songs including the contest piece, but on the day itself we will only be singing 4 songs: the contest piece plus 3 of the prepared pieces that the judges will pick on the spot. At least that's what I heard. Our prepared repertoire is:

Renaissance: Exsultate Justi (Ludovico da Viadana)
Romantic: Abendlied (Josef Rheinberger) <-- your namesake song
Early 20th Century: Salve Regina (Francis Poulenc)
Late 20th Century: Mundi renovatio (György Orbán)
Philippine Folk/Ethnic Song: Bal-laygi (Arwin Tan)
OPM Song: Bituing Walang Ningning (Willy Cruz arr. Robert Delgado, Jr.)
Contest Piece: Butiki (Kiyoung Kim)

The other song choices were:

Renaissance:
O quam gloriosam (Tomas Luis de Victoria)
Si ch'io vorrei morire (Claudio Monteverdi)

Romantic:
Ave Maria (Giuseppi Verdi)
Bogoroditsye Dyevo (Sergei Rachmaninov)

Early 20th Century:
Cantique de Jean Racine (Gabriel Faure)
Ballad of Green Broom (Benjamin Britten)

Late 20th Century:
Kasar mie la gaji (Alberto Grau)
Cantus gloriosus (Jozef Swider)

I got this from: http://www.voiceteacher.com/damaging.html

D A M A G I N G V O C A L T E C H N I Q U E S

It has been requested repeatedly that I write about vocal techniques that can result in vocal stress or even damage. I have hesitated to write about this because it is a difficult and controversial subject. Nevertheless, I believe it is a subject that needs to be responsibly addressed. Most singers know little if anything about the voice when they begin to study singing. Nor do they know what is healthy or unhealthy vocal technique. Having suffered vocal damage myself, I can only speak from my own experience. In the following paragraphs, I will list the causes of such vocal damage. Not only have I witnessed vocal damage, I can say I have suffered vocal damage and have recovered from it through the concepts of Alan Lindquest, his students Virginia Botkin, Martha Rosacker, and Dr. Barbara Mathis, and Dr. Evelyn Reynolds, my present teacher who has studied the Italian School extensively. All of these teachers have accomplished a deep understanding of the concepts of the Italian School in great detail and they all developed diagnostic hearing plus tools to solve vocal problems. All of them have been extremely influential in my development as a teacher and they have given me an expertise that I value greatly today. This is why I encourage young teachers to find a real master teacher with whom to study. Lindquest continued his vocal research until his death at age 93. This is the sign of someone who pursues the deepest truth in vocal concepts. Singing is a life-study. It is exciting in the sense that one can learn at any age and the journey need never end.

THE DAMAGING EFFECTS OF A FLAT-TONGUED TECHNIQUE

So many teachers and singers are confused about the healthy position of the tongue in singing. I have worked directly with singers who have studied a 'flat tongued' technique and attempt to sing on this type of production. The flat-tongued technique is basically a non-productive futile attempt to find more acoustical space in the throat. I can tell you without hesitation that this is an incorrect and damaging technique. If the tongue is flat, then the mass of muscle at the back of the tongue (tongue root) is forced into the pharynx. This fills up the primary resonator (pharynx) with tongue mass which can be compared to singing with a pillow in one's throat. Trying to teach a singer with such a background can be a difficult journey at best. Healthy nasal resonance cannot be present in a flat-tongued technique. It is important to understand that healthy nasal resonance (not nasality) is the only concept that completely releases tension at the root of the tongue.

In a flat-tongued technique, the singer is primarily using a technique which does not allow for a healthy change of register as one ascends upward within any scale or arpeggio. The root of the tongue places direct pressure or stress at the vocal cords or glottis. After hearing a singer trained in this destructive technique, it becomes obvious that this incorrect vocal concept does not allow for the healthy pivoting of the vocal folds. Therefore there cannot be a healthy transition into the head voice register. Loss of high notes is typical in such an approach to singing. When the tongue is too flat, then the singer has to force the voice into the upper register with a tremendous amount of breath pressure. This breath pressure irritates the vocal cords and the result is usually hoarseness and an inability to phonate healthily. Some singers have also suffered damage such as vocal hemorrhage, bowed vocal cords, nodules, or polyps from singing with the tongue depressed or flat. This constant pressure on the larynx and vocal cords created by this technique is completely unhealthy for the voice. I warn teachers and singers that those who pursue such a technique to get a 'bigger sound' (this kind of sound is only big in a small room and is quite small in a theatre.) can destroy their vocal health.

CASE STUDY: TENOR SINGING BARITONE

Recently I had the opportunity to work with a young professional baritone. At 23, he was loosing his voice through hoarseness after each performance. There were two primary culprits that worked together to destroy healthy production: tremendous breath pressure and a flat-tongued technique. Because he was trying to create false color with the back of the tongue and because he thought he was a baritone (see article on Vocal Fach), this young singer was flattening his tongue. There were four negative results (1) absence of healthy nasal resonance, (2) inability to achieve 'ring' in the voice through nasal resonance, (3) chronic hoarseness from a flat tongue position creating direct pressure on the vocal cords, and (4) absence of an easy transition into the upper passaggio and high range. After working with this singer for a period of about 10 minutes and having heard the absence of true resonance in the voice, I decided to vocalize him higher. Because of Lindquest's great understanding of the tenor voice, partly from his association with Jussi Bjoerling, and because his exercises invite balance in the upper passaggio, this singer could quite quickly go up to the high C and even to the high D without major difficulty. I began to analyze the singer's tongue position and realized that at times it was completely flat in an attempt to manufacture a baritone color in the voice. Since he was not really a baritone, this was impossible. After listening to his first lesson, he described his own voice as sounding simply like a "tenor who was trying to make a baritone sound".

By the third lesson, this singer was singing the tenor solos in Handel's Messiah with great beauty of tone. It became more and more obvious to me that this young singer was singing in the wrong fach. The flat tongue position was only one of the negative results of singing in the incorrect vocal fach. As I mentioned above, chronic hoarseness would follow each performance. This is yet another case of a young singer who was on the road to vocal damage because of an insistence from his instructor that he was a baritone. There is absolutely no denying the truth; that he is a high tenor. This is an example of a situation where a teacher's ego dominates over real concern for the singer. This is criminal and there should be laws to protect singers. True, he could sing in the baritone range by depressing the larynx with the root of the tongue. However, this created false color and forced the voice to phonate lower than intended. As a light skinned blond person, (usually these singers have blood vessels right on the surface of the vocal cords.) had he continued to sing with this false and unhealthy technique, he most certainly would have suffered vocal damage, probably through a major vocal hemorrhage.

Tongue depressors: The ultimate in vocal abuse: I have taught singers who were taught to depress the tongue with a tongue depressor while looking into a mirror. This is absolute vocal abuse that most certainly results in vocal damage. In this kind of circumstance, there is absolute and obvious confusion by the instructor. The confusion lies in the idea that what appears to be filling the mouth space can be flattened to make more space in the throat. This concept represents a basic ignorance in the physiology of the voice. In actuality, flattening of the tongue is filling up the pharynx or back wall of the throat with tongue mass. Singers trained in this way often sound as though they are gargling marbles and trying to sing at the same time. On the other hand, when the mouth space appears to be filled with the forward and arched tongue; the back of the throat (pharynx) is actually much more open. Remember Lamperti's quote: "The singer's pronouncer is in the pharynx NOT the mouth." When the tongue is arched healthily as in the 'ng' position (Lindquest's home position of the tongue), then the singer can pronounce the vowels clearly. The integrity of the clear Italian vowel sounds is never sacrificed. The tongue should never be frozen in place. Otherwise clear pronunciation is impossible. Those who have forced the tongue flat cannot make a clear transition from vowel to vowel. The result is a large forced ugly sound with lots of breath pressure forcing the voice to go higher. Many singers have suffered vocal hemorrhage or nodules from this tremendous breath pressure alone. I warn teachers and singers alike that this is extremely dangerous. A singer who has suffered from this kind of instruction and suffered vocal damage should seek legal action. One famous court case in the United States awarded a singer a very large sum of money. The technique taught this singer was extremely destructive and included an unhealthy depressed tongue approach. I had one lesson with a New York teacher who taught this technique because he had a big name. I was searching for another teacher at the time because Mr. Lindquest had died. This teacher gave me a vocal hemorrhage trying to make me a high C tenor when I was actually a lyric baritone. I left his studio unable to speak and cancelled all of my teaching for the next 3 days. Later when I had my vocal cords videoed at the University Hospital at Groningen, The Netherlands, the scar on my right vocal cord from the hemorrhage was evident. I now have a scar on my right vocal cord because of this teacher's dalliance and irresponsibility (he had a huge ego!) Luckily the scar is on the fold and not on the vocal lip. Therefore it does not impede my singing ability.

JAW FORWARD TECHNIQUE

I remember the first time I had a singer who had been taught to place or relax the jaw forward. The resulting sound was that of a small child; extremely breathy and throaty. The throat was completely closed and the vocal cords would not approximate properly. The voice lacked any kind of color or warmth and would fatigue very quickly. When the jaw is forward, there are several negative results: (1) the vocal cords do not approximate correctly. (2) The tongue usually goes back into the pharynx, filling the primary resonator with tongue mass. (3) The larynx functions in a high position allowing only a thin immature sound to be produced. (4) The soft palate assumes a low position, often resulting in nasal or thin tone. (5) Legato line is impossible because the tongue is so tense that there cannot be a healthy separation between the jaw and tongue function. (6) There cannot be a healthy breath line because the breath is choked off by the root of the tongue. (7) It is impossible to create a musical phrase because the singer cannot crescendo or decrescendo healthily. (8) The vowels are usually distorted because of a large of amount of tension at the tongue root. (9) Since the back wall of the pharynx is closed, there cannot be healthy resonance present in the voice.

HIGH LARYNXED TECHNIQUE: Often associated with the Boy Choir Sound

I can speak from personal experience about this subject. I was trained as tenor even though I was actually a lyric baritone. This is extremely damaging to a young singer. My personal belief is that many teachers are not taught to hear the difference between healthy ring in the voice and a 'squeeze' of the throat. Often college, university, or conservatory teachers are teaching very young singers and are afraid to address the issue of the high larynx. Their fear, and I understand that fear, is of a depressed larynx technique which is truly incorrect and damaging as well. However, it is crucial that the singer learn a slightly low larynx production without overly depressing the larynx with the root of the tongue. If taught with the nasal resonance and the 'ng' tongue position, the slightly lowered larynx makes for a healthy, warm, and balanced vocal tone which includes both higher and lower overtones. I understand that many teachers are afraid to allow young singers to make a big sound. However, it is critical that teachers understand that if they are teaching a young large-voiced singer and the singer is not allowed to use the fullness of the instrument, then the result is usually a squeezed throat which can be damaging. The singer is trying desperately to 'lighten up the voice'. This concept of lightening the voice needs to be taught with a deep body connection. The only way a large voiced singer can lighten up his/her tonal quality is to connect deeper to the body.

One of the largest problems for me personally was when I was required to sing as a tenor in choirs when I was in reality a lyric baritone. This created constant hoarseness, especially when I was required by a conductor to sing a boy choir sound with a straight tone. I would have difficult speaking clearly after any choral rehearsal. This was primarily due to the fact that I could not sustain the tenor tessitura with a lower larynx position. The result was a constant irritation of my vocal cords. A depressed larynx or a high larynx can cause irritation. I am fortunate that the scar on my right vocal cord is not at the vocal lip. However, this scar could have been catastrophic to my singing and I could have suffered damage that would not allow me to sing again. Scar tissue does not stretch as healthy tissue does. The 'boy choir' sound is not a sound that is designed for any adult to make. Demanding this kind of sound by voice teacher or choral director from an adult singer creates all kinds of vocal difficulties as I listed at the top of this paragraph.

STRAIGHT TONE SINGING: The Early Music Trap

Some of my favorite music is of the Baroque period. I love Bach and Handel and the beauty of their music. I personally sing this music with a healthy shimmering vibrato. A healthy vibrato shimmers with fast vibrations. It is not to be confused with a wide vibrato or 'vocal wobble'. I certainly understand that choral directors do not want any of their singers to 'wobble' because tuning becomes impossible. However, attempting to solve this problem with straight tone singing is futile and destructive vocally. Usually the singer with the wide vibrato gets even worse because of the holding in the throat. This is of course a response to trying to 'straighten out' the tone.

Why is straight tone singing damaging? The answer to this question is simple. When a healthy tone is produced, the result is a taut and shimmering vibrato. The vibrato is a result of the healthy function of the vocal cords. It has a direct relationship to Flagstad's comparison of a 'silver sound' or 'silver thread'. If a singer is required to sing a straight tone for any choral director or teacher, then that singer has to squeeze the vocal cords in order to stop the vocal cords from fully vibrating. This does not allow a healthy amount of air through the vocal folds. This holding of tension in the throat can create all sorts of negative results including a closed acoustical space. The largest problem is vocal fatigue accompanied with an imbalance of the registers. Most straight tone singers find it impossible to allow for a healthy transition into head voice. This kind of singer is actually unaware that he/she is belting from the lower register upward. However, the straight tone sound is so thin and light with a high larynx that it disguises chest voice as head voice. I speak from personal experience on this issue. When I was singing as a high larynxed tenor, I thought I was singing head voice when in actuality I was belting the middle voice as high as I possibly could. The vocal cords became extremely fatigued and beauty of tone was impossible. The healthy pivoting process of the vocal folds was impossible and I had no sensation of a high soft palate. With age, my voice became more and more brittle in sound. There was a complete absence of warmth of tone in the voice. By the time I got to Alan Lindquest, I was suffering vocal damage at age 29.

THE SMILE TECHNIQUE

There is one large-scale incorrect technique that I must speak about; the smile technique. So many teachers and singers think that it is important to smile at the mouth opening while singing. This absolutely is destructive to the throat. The Italian School teaches the inner smile which is actually a high and wide soft palate, lifted cheeks under the eyes, sunken cheeks at the back teeth (this creates more acoustical space in the pharynx), and all this with an oval mouth shape. The smile is actually in the eyes, NOT the mouth.

So many singers are taught the smile technique in an attempt to brighten the tonal quality of the voice. Instead brilliance of tone should be produced by bringing the tongue forward and arched out of the throat. The smile technique is related to the 'boy choir' sound in an adult voice; something that should never be taught. It does nothing to enhance the voice and the results can be extremely damaging over time. This smile of the mouth technique raises the larynx, drops the palate, invites the jaw to move forward, the tone to be bright and thin, and usually the singer is flat in pitch. The vocal cords also do not close properly. Absolutely NO body part is in the correct position for healthy singing to occur. The absolute negative result is a closed throat that causes hoarseness after singing. Again this is another technique which is widely excepted as one of vocal health. The truth is that is it extremely dangerous and detrimental to true vocal health and should never be taught. This has been scientifically proven through the use of fiberoptic research.

Although there are some excellent early music singers, this smile technique is quite popular amongst many in that genre of music. Those who use this concept in an attempt for authenticity will and do suffer the consequences. I can name several early music singers who have large scale recording careers, yet they sing constantly flat and out of tune. I have never understood why their recordings sell. Do people not hear that they are singing flat? Over time the voice will deteriorate completely. Again, I am speaking from personal experience. I was taught by a high tenor who had me smile while singing. The result was an extremely high larynx position and constant vocal fatigue. By the time I got to Alan Lindquest in 1979, my voice was stiff, rigid, and had a flat and unpleasant tone. It was impossible for me to go into the upper passaggio and high range because the larynx position was too high. The vocal cords could not pivot properly for the correct register changes. There is not doubt that the smile technique is quite dangerous.

THE PULLED DOWN FACIAL POSTURE IN SINGING

I have witnessed many singers who pull down the cheeks and cover the teeth completely while singing. This simply makes singing very difficult and hooty. Again, the Swedish/Italian School attempts to create a balance between higher and lower overtones. The lift of the cheeks under the eyes brings the soft palate up. Quality of tone is directly effected by one's facial posture because of its effects on the interior posture of the throat. If the facial posture is pulled down, then singer must work twice as hard with breath pressure to blow the soft palate out of the way. The result is usually pushed and unpleasant tone. When the facial posture is lifted, then high overtones come into the singer's production. Without lift, the singer's voice does not carry properly in a concert hall or opera house. The lift brings ring into the voice and therefore carrying power.

It seems that men are often the singers who use this technique the most. I remember hearing a British baritone who was flown over to sing Elijah in a concert in Connecticut. This was a catastrophic performance. The production was hooty and dark and he sounded somewhat like he was imitating a moose call. I actually felt sorry for the singer because of his own obvious discomfort. The audience was shocked and disappointed at the lack of beauty of tone. I believe that people can keep their voice as long as they can keep their health. This is also very related to exercising the voice properly. If a person is physically healthy and exercises his/her voice properly, then vocal longevity is quite easy. This baritone was only about age 55 and should have been at his peak. Sadly the voice was quite stiff and ugly and the high notes were completely flat in intonation. All this was directly related to his confusion regarding correct facial posture. Since I had a mezzo in the performance, then I got more of the inside story. This man was quite arrogant because of his own insecurity. It made him quite a bad colleague. His own unhappiness and insecurity turned him into a difficult and demanding performer. I will be writing an article on facial posture and the acoustical relationship to healthy tone shortly. It will also be a long chapter in my upcoming book.

THE BELTING OF BREATH PRESSURE: Over-development of the Chest Register

The more of this article I write the more it becomes obvious that every vocal concept is connected to another. If one element is out of alignment, then the result is that other aspects of the voice become unhealthy as well. When I was incorrectly trained as a high larynxed tenor, I had to use a tremendous amount of breath pressure to force the voice upward. This was not a conscious or aware reflex, but there was really no other choice. My tongue not only was flat, but in the upper range it also dipped like a spoon. This tongue problem was a direct result of the breath pressure that I had to use to try and go up into the higher range. I especially wanted to try and go higher because teachers had told me I was a tenor. I was actually a lyric baritone. This tenor training was extremely damaging. This was because it resulted in every body part being in the wrong position for healthy singing. This includes a larynx high, flat and back tongue position, breath high under the chest and little or no lower body support. The result was the support of tone by the tongue, little or no vowel clarity because of the forward jaw and low palate, and tremendous lack of resonance because of a complete lack of acoustical space. It became obvious in later years that I was constantly doing a close dance with vocal damage and no one really offered me any answers until I met Alan Lindquest and the other teachers I mention at the first of the article.

One thing is for sure; hard belting is damaging to the voice. There is absolutely no way to belt with breath pressure and have the vocal cords survive without damage. It is unfortunate that pop and Broadway singers feel the necessity to belt in order to compete. Usually the singer must use a lot of breath pressure or breath compression in order to push the chest register upward further than it is designed to sing. I was fortunate to survive with only one vocal hemorrhage. I have the scar on the right vocal fold to prove my vocal distress. I was intelligent enough in my instincts to seek help and it took years to find a teacher who knew about vocal technique.

LOCKED SOLAR PLEXUS TECHNIQUE

Tragically, many young singers are taught a technique that tries to get only to the 'big vocal sound'. Some teachers think that a singer must have this in order to compete in the business of classical singing. True that any singer needs a large amount of 'ring' in the voice. But this is not created by pumping a 'big sound' out of the mouth space with lots of breath pressure. Healthy resonance is created with the help of nasal resonance that takes away the pressure at the root of the tongue.

This 'big vocal sound' (which has become popular!) is manufactured by pumping a tremendous amount of breath pressure through the larynx. I call this the over-compression of the breath. Often in such a technique the teacher puts his or her fist in the singer's solar plexus area and then has the singer 'push out' with a great amount of pressure. The result is a loud and pushed sound with little or no healthy nasal resonance. In healthy singing, the solar plexus gradually turns freely as the singer gradually fuels the small stream of breath through the larynx. Remember that Caruso said he needed no more breath to sing than to have a casual conservation with a friend. With this pressurized technique it is quite impossible to achieve vocal freedom. The root of the tongue becomes locked and yet again direct pressure is placed at the vocal cords by the root of the tongue. Usually these singers suffer an overly-chested technique. Again there is no possibility for head voice development. The singer suffers difficulty with high notes and there is a large imbalance of registration present. I once had a French mezzo who had studied a teacher who used the 'fist in the stomach technique'. She was admitted into a very exclusive conservatory and at the end of her study she could no longer sing thanks to this damaging technique. She was not allowed to perform her graduation recital and after a threatened law suit, she was allowed to study with me outside the school for credit. It took one and one half years to rehabilitate her voice. Her teacher used the 'fist in the stomach' technique which creates a gag reflex at the root of the tongue. Once this extreme reflex is taught to the body, it is difficult to correct. After tremendously hard work at recovering from the damage taught her, this singer graduated and is now a successful voice teacher. She was indeed a victim of a damaging technique taught by someone who was ignorant of the resulting damage. She paid a large sum of money to attend a conservatory, which not only did not serve her, but also damaged her voice.

BREATHY TECHNIQUE

I first learned of the damage of breathy singing from my friend and colleague Dr. Barbara Mathis. Her research is ground breaking to say the least and she is one of the finest voice scientists and teachers in the United States. She teaches at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas.

During her vocal research, she decided to have a 'vocal abuse' session using the fiberoptic camera. The discovery was nothing less than amazing. She told me that after singing with a breathy tone, the vocal cords turned more and more red and the vocal lips swelled almost twice their normal thickness. This was indeed an eye-opening event. I have had the privilege of seeing Dr. Mathis' research. I consider her to be a great vocal technician and she has done amazing work with damaged voices.

My personal experience with breathy tone was revealed when I worked with Alan Lindquest. My vocal cords would not come together properly because of years of using breath pressure and a high larynx. The vocal cords were 'bowed' and would not come together like healthy cords. He offered me exercises that changed my singing life. Suddenly after only about 2 days my tone became healthy again. Lindquest used some of Garcia's 'coup de glotte' exercises that healed a great deal my vocal damage. I had acquired this damage over about 15 years of incorrect instruction. It is scientifically proven that breathy singing is damaging to the voice. It is sad to say that this technique is being taught in an attempt to 'lighten the voice'.

Recently I had the experience of hearing a Cabaret performance in New York City. The singer used a lot of breathy tone for dramatic effect. This was a huge mistake. After only about 3 songs vocal fatigue began to develop and by the end of the performance the singer was trying desperately just to get through the performance. All of this occurred because of the swelling of the vocal cords due to breathy singing.

THE FINAL ANALYSIS: Causes of Vocal Fatigue

In closing, I think it is crucial that I list the causes of vocal fatigue. Because singing is such a coordinated function, the list of causes might seem repetitive. However, I feel it is important to review the causes of vocal fatigue. Allow me to say emphatically, a singer should NEVER experience vocal fatigue. If he/she is singing correctly, the voice should not tire. I speak and teach 7 to 8 hours per day 6 days per week and I never experience vocal fatigue in my voice studio. Never should a singer feel fatigue after a lesson. I have heard so many singers tell me that their last teacher told them that the 'muscles had to get used to the new technique'. This is irresponsible for any instructor not to take vocal fatigue as a red light for future vocal damage. Hoarseness should NEVER occur after any voice lesson unless the singer is executing the instruction incorrectly.

Causes:
(1) Smoking or drinking alcoholic beverages.
(2) Belting: using too much chest voice pushed up to high in the scale.
(3) Using a technique with a tight solar plexus during singing.
(4) Singing with a high larynx.
(5) Singing with a low soft palate.
(6) Singing with a forward jaw position.
(7) Singing with the vocal cords too far apart or too squeezed together.
(8) Pushing too much breath pressure through the larynx.
(9) Incorrect posture; dropped chest or hyper-extended chest.
(10) Singing with the head posture pushed forward from the spine.
(11) Use of mouth vowels instead of pharyngeal vowels.
(12) Unsupported singing; lack of connection to the resistance of breath pressure in the lower back and abdominal muscles.

UST Singers Wows Manila’s Elite Circle
A Serenade for the Arts
A concert by the UST Singers
Manila Polo Club, Forbes Park Makati

The last time I heard them sing was during their homecoming concert at the Philamlife Auditorium last year after their 11th world concert tour of Europe and the United States of America. As an avid follower of the multi-awarded, choir of the world the University of Santo Tomas Singers, last night’s concert was a tad different from their previous engagements.

Passing the asphalted road of Mc Kinley to the high imposing mansions of Manila’s elite circle down to the glittering lawn of the Manila Polo Club says something that the event will be a divergent of the usual sight, sound and smell of say the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo, Philam, or in the halls of the academe of the sacrosanct Santo Tomas campus.

Guests started to come in for a night of enchanting music. There were, of course, diplomats whose residences and offices are just within the corners of the exclusive Forbes Park. The atmosphere was stringent. There were a lot of brilliancies from ladies donning their Bulgari necklaces which seem to match the glittering chandeliers of the Main Lounge of the Manila Polo Club. Hardly did I see guests having tete a tete. Expectedly, UST Singers fanatic and former editor-in-chief of the Manila Standard Jullie Yap Daza was present.

After the one-hour cocktails, Sunico Foundation for Arts and Technology president Renato Sunico delivered the opening remarks. Two scholars of the foundation who would benefit from the proceeds of the concert were present.

The repertoire consisted a combination of classical, international, Filipino and Broadway as well as specially-arranged chorus works.

The Choir of the World started the program with Dona Ubensa. Emerging from the back of the audience, they sung it as they took centerstage. What is so amazing with the UST Singers aside of course from their marvelous voice is the group’s knack for adroit choreography. They don’t just sing; they create a show. So apt for this kind of histrionic artistry is the choir’s rendition of Broadway Medley. Almost non-stop, one marvels at the stamina of the group as they acted, danced and sung and made it appear so effortlessly. Irene Marcos-Araneta enjoyed it so much and was the first to gave the choir a standing ovation. Among the impressed audience seen watching were Former DSWD Secretary Dinky Soliman, Veteran Actress Delia Razon, and CEO of Philippine Daily Inquirer Sandy Prieto Romualdez.

As an ardent follower of the UST Singers, I could easily spot the newly hired members. Even if almost half of the group is new, the marks of a world-class choir are still there. The signature of the Choir of the World that earned them the title in 1995 still persists.

Perhaps the most dramatic and applauded part of the concert was the finale. Prof. Fidel Calalang’s opus’ Pilipinas Kong Mahal, a touching medley of nationalistic songs had uplifted most of the audiences’ spirits. Seen teary was Former Secretary Dinky Soliman. Prior to the rendition of Professor Calalang’s oeuvre, a short remark given by UST Singers president Viola Villena was all inspiring.

Bravo UST Singers!

Dang, totoo nga ang report ng friends ko from the States...

HATAW ANG MADZ!!!!!!!!!!!

I watched their concert last night at the CCP little theater, and boy oh boy, I loved the sheer artistry with how they were sculpturing the phrases of the music. I was just closing my eyes and savoring the music - a lot of goosebumps moments for me.

The sopranos section has definitely improved from the last time I heard them - a darker and heftier tone in terms of timbre and volume. But the stand out section for me were the basses - full and resonant without being overly burly and wooly-sounding.

Try catching them tonight at the CCP little theater. It's gonna be worth the effort of wading through the xmas traffic hahahahahahaha :P

anyone here watched the metro chorale last night? I liked yung kanilang interpretation ng contest piece and other songs. sobra silang nag-gel and kita talaga ang linya!! I guess it had a lot of impact doon.

But everyone did well!!! I'm really proud of them for giving all of their efforts, time, and energy.

Mabuhay ang Korong Pilipino!!! :D

Dear friends,

It is that time of the year again, and I heartily invite you to the 6th Annual Workshop for Choral Conductors, which is going to be held at the Asian Institute for Liturgy and Music on March 28 – April 1, 2006. The focus for this year’s workshop is Style and Interpretation.

I myself cannot believe that we have done these workshops six years running! And I’m sure that somehow, we have managed to uplift the standards of the choral conducting profession. We at the Asian Institute for Liturgy and Music have always strived to find ways to raise the level of choral singing and conducting, not only in the country but in Asia as well.

For this year, we have decided to concentrate on the one weakness that Philippine choirs have exhibited time and again in national and international competitions: Style and Interpretation. We have always been proud of our wonderful voices, but have never really understood the other half of the criteria for giving a credible performance. We have arranged to give you some excellent lectures and tips concerning these topics, and again invited the country’s top choral masters to share with us their knowledge and expertise.

And of course, we will not forget the nightly concerts! We promise five nights of unparalleled choral performances by the country’s top choirs. And what better way to see them all at once than to attend our unique workshop! In a continuing tradition, we will also include the participants in the final night, to sing and conduct and be nervous and make music – all in one evening!

As if that is not enough good news (including Manny Pacquiao’s winning, of course!), we have decided to maintain the same fees of last year! That means a basic seminar fee of 3,000 pesos, which will include access to all seminars, workshops, clinics, and good seats in the concerts, plus all the hand-outs and materials. If you want to have lunch with us (and engage in the latest choral gossip), please add an additional 400 pesos. For those needing lodging and meals, we will charge an additional fee of 1,500 pesos per person for the entire stay (including lunch, so no need to pay the additional 400 pesos).

Space is limited, so I urge you to reserve your place in this “mother of all choral workshops”! For further information, please contact (02)722-5554 (Luz), or (02)722-8577 (Debbie), or email at choirmaster@gmail.com.

We hope to see you soon!

Dear MADZ & FRIENDS

It has been 2 ½ months since our founder, Prof. Andrea O. Veneracion whom we fondly call Ma’am OA, suffered from a massive stroke. She stayed in the hospital’s intensive care unit for one month and was brought home thereafter to recover. Though she is still incapable of responding through movement and conversation, Ma’am OA’s condition continues to improve. She is being carefully monitored by her doctors and home nurses to ensure her recovery. According to the doctors, this will take 3 to 12 months.

The Veneracion family has incessantly provided Ma’am OA with everything she needs – from high end and complex medical support to the most simple and effective medicines in the form of love and care. The Philippine Madrigal Singers, as her second family, would like to do the same and it is for this reason that we are humbly requesting for your support.

May we invite you to gather as one to be part of this fund-raising concert for Ma’am OA and for her continuous recovery?

The concert, Raison d’Etre (Reason for Being) will be held at the CCP Little Theater on March 25 and 26, 2006 at 7:30pm. You may show your support by making a love gift. A member of the present batch of the Madz will personally come to you to accept your donation.

Alternatively, you may purchase concert tickets at Php1,500 and Php1,000.

We are all aware of how much Ma’am OA has done to form our family and make it stand as one. Not to mention her undying efforts to inspire many of her singers to become choirmasters themselves. She has touched our lives and has contributed so much to our growth as musicians - she has nourished our talents, elevated our musicality, enriched our knowledge, and touched our souls.

Through the concert, we could at least acknowledge the efforts she has done for our family and at the same time celebrate the success of her work which we are all living legacies of. Let us all be part of this celebration for Ma’am OA – our teacher, our friend, our mother,…. our Raison d’Etre.

Thank you very much!

Respectfully yours, Noted by:

I was able to catch UPCC's performance last night at AILM, and all I can saw is.... WOW!

I was particularly enthralled with their Pater Noster (Myskynis) and the Exultate Deo (Busto). It was also worth to note that they were suiting their vocal colors according to the stylistics of each peice. Even their fortes and fortissimos had different qualities as per requirement of what they were singing. But what was more amazing for me was that they were actually dancing and singing in their last songs (acapella to boot) with minimal or no loss in the over-all choral sound - something not easily done, trust me.

Kudos to Ma'am Jai and the UPCC. Good luck with your tour and competition - Ibandera ang mga koralistang Pinoy!

P.S. Catch UE Chorale tonight, Ateneo Chamber Singers on Friday, and UST Singers on Sat - all for free! 7:30pm at the St. Andrew's chapel at AILM

I wish the organizers would be more careful in selecting whose choir should be singing this time in Et Al. The negative feedbacks of the last year's et al hopefully are still well remembered by them.

Sa totoo lang eh madaming choirs last year na sobrang hindi qualified para kumanta sa isang concert na kagaya ng et al. Sobrang napaka CHAKA!

Yes,yes, yes!

Dapat siguro ang madz et al maging festival, hindi iisang concert, siguro a week-long, or 3-day series of concerts by choirs, tapos reserve the best ones for the gala. At least naka-participate ang lahat, nagkaroon ng exposure and experience, but the whole event closes with the best. Isa pang suggestion, baka pwedeng per day may theme, halimbawa, lahat kayong choirs on this day ethnic ang repertoire, kayo naman 20th century, at kayo naman will feature baroque. To top it off, why not contact DOT so they can promote this in the tourist scene.

Unang-una, I still support the cause of Madz in featuring new and upcoming choral groups in the country.

Pangalawa, you are free to give your constructive comments to the participating choirs. Pananaw mo naman yan eh.

Hi there Pexers,

Well, what can I say about Madz Et Al? There were slight improvements I must admit, but the thing is, the substandard choirs were allowed to sing pa din. Why do you still allowed them? Sana kung hindi qualified ay wag muna and this is for their own good because napapahiya din sila. I'm sure they can't help but make comparizons.

There's nothing more I can add, I was still dissapointed!

We are planning to form a choir po na ang main purpose is to serve God and help in certain functions in the Couples for Christ community. For other details, just text Dave at 09167217373 or Ryan at 09206115758.

Maraming salamat po!!! :D

Malapit na ang colors of worship. Excited na ako. At kayo rin. Aminin! Sa tingin ko naman, lahat ng mga participating choirs dito eh may "k" kaya sila pinili/ininvite for the said event. And i know, they are working hard ryt now, just to improve their sound and to give us a good concert. Iwasan na ang awayan, let's just support our favorite choirs. Good luck!!!

it is so easy to put down other people's efforts in providing a venue for choirs to sing. i suggest they mount their own choir festival and make sure that the choirs they feature are the very best according to their standard. that way, everyone is happy and there would be more opportunities for choirs to sing. would they please rise to the challenge? as of now, we only have Madz et al. and colors of worship.

on hindsight, maybe the organizers of these Festivals would welcome suggestions from rational posts.

let us not always dwell on who or what choir is the best. let us be happy that there are many Filipino choirs. that makes the Philippines a great country in the choral world.
