we whine about our deadly philosophy subjects, but i think deep down we are proud of the fact that we are capable of digesting all those truths and what-have-you. i mean, when i talk to people from other schools, i can't help but mention our philosophy subjects and how they're molding us to the ateneans that we are and have always been -- intelligent, perceptive, and articulate. of course, i have to say that i learned a lot from all 4 philosophy subjects, and feel proud that I was able to rise up to the challenges I faced...with the voluminous readings of Fr. David (heavens! 200 pages a week of Plato!) and his 15-page papers, and with the IQMCN and summun omnium of Lore Aguilar in Tagalog (ang pinakahigit sa lahat..etc, etc.).. SO, how do you like Philosophy in Ateneo?

I really love it and I learned a lot!
College means nothing without Philo!
I'm sure every Atenean agrees! :D

i'm really proud that i went through philosohpy in ateneo. other schools boast about their majors and concentration. they claim that they end up being successful in the corporate world, etc etc. but we know that success is not measured by the money you make, and the meaning of life transcends mere physical living. and yes, we live a more conscious life. makes me wonder though: has everything we learned molded us into the proud elitists we are known to be? in any case, philo has broken my limited vision of the world. even if i cant actually remember which philosopher said what, the insights have stuck in my mind. i think it has created some sort of chain reaction. now that i'm out of school, i actually feel intellectually-starved!

I remember how before, I used to really fear Philo and it's final orals. Yet, after all is said and done, I can say that I truly profited from Philosophy as a person. Never mind that I just had ok grades, I realized its the ability to think of the world in a more clearer way is the objective of Philosophy.

Subalit huwag nating kalilimutan ang pinakamahalagang birtud na ating natutunan sa Pilosopiya: mas mahalaga ay yaong di pa nalalaman.

I love Philo. Used to whine a lot because of it, but well, now that I look back, I am SO grateful that we had it. "Kapag nasabi na ang lahat ng masasabi, ang pinakamahalaga ay di pa rin nasasabi." :)

equal mention also to theology of liberation which like philosophy is likewise touching my mind and spirit until now (to quote brownpau :)).

Philo in AdMU left me with a lot of lasting reflections which still touch my mind and spirit today in the workplace. I'm really glad we were required to take so much of it.

actually, you're right. at least about the cop out explanations part. i loved all my philo classes. but sometimes, feeling ko rin, yung explanations that they offer are often cop out. upto now, i still am not satisfied with the explanation of how descartes' dream doubt was destroyed. i know he himself said that his dream doubt couldn't be real, pero.. kulang eh...

I am a senior right now and the 8 units that I already took were really worth it even if it means having to read a lot. Plus, I took my Philo in Tagalog. It definitely changed my outlook in life.

i think they cut down on the core subject units to give way to major subjects...they want the students to be more competitive in their respective fields. i think they also axed En26 and Th21

From what I heard, decreasing the number of units will allow students more free time (less pressure), hence, more time to STUDY, which is more often the exception than not.

I'm not an Atenean, but I did major in Philosophy at San Beda. The philosophy program in Ateneo, although a tad bit phenomenological/existential, is pretty good. Philosophy should be emphasized in all universities. The essence of a real education is not whether it can land you a job upon graduation. The meaning of a genuine education lies in the way it elevates the humanity and intellectual curiosity in the student. Philosophy does that and more. Kudos to the Ateno philo program!

Something I said in another thread:

I'm a MIS graduate of Ateneo and mahirap talaga CS. The disccipline in learning CS is different...
Pero if you take all your subjects seriously, I find Philosophy the hardest, yet most fascinating and rewarding once you reap its "truths"

My CS, ME, and MIS subjects help me excel in my career right now (technical consultant) pero...

Theology and Philosophy made my life a success ... a fulfillement

The only regret (and please, i don't want to think about the phenomenolgy...whatever of regret) was that I was'nt able to take any of Fr. Ferriols class. My teachers were Oris, Fr. David, and some girl with glasses, curly hair, and soft voice. (97, philo 104 ata) ..sayang

**tip to all students***
Always try to get the teachers who are already "institutions" by themselves in college. You will feel strange and empty pag nagkwe-kwentuhan na kayo about your college days - and you can't relate how it feels to be a student of a great teacher...and how they manage to touch and change your lives forever.

Also, tama sabi ng isang guy that don't forget what theo of liberation can do to you ... its different when you're out here na.

Sobrang gamit lahat na napag aralan ko sa MIS in my career right now...SAD, database, etc ...

pero until now Philo pa rin pinag-uusapan pag nagsasama-sama kami ulit...it will really touch your life whether you like it or not..

i like philo but right now i come close to hating it because fr. david's my teacher! grabe, his 4 units of philo seems like 10 to me! grabe, we have to read a whole book in two weeks! but his lectures are sorta ok naman, its just he seems to be practicing his totalitarianism thing on his on his studes.
