Here's some I heard and I hope someone will confirm:

UST's main building was actually the first earthquake-proof building in the Philippines.

UP's diliman campus used to be a Japanese garrison during world war 2.

The original oblation was cast in concrete but was re-cast in bronze for UP's 50th birthday.

Ateneo's campus in Padre Faura burned down, making moving to the Loyola campus vital.

15 La Salle brothers were killed in the chapel during the last days of occupation.

Anyway, the trivia I posted is not error-proof.

Got some trivia about your school?

LoL. Kilala ko yung nagnakaw nito. Syempre matanda na sya ngayon. His daughter (or was it granddaughter? I couldn't remember) was a friend of my sister's (before. noong highschool pa sila) and naka display sa house nila yung sword ni St. Ignatius.

Did you know that De La Salle University used to have a grade school and a high school in its Main campus in Taft Avenue, just like the Ateneo? But then, due to lack of space and the continuous expansion of the college programs in the Taft campus, they had to move and relocate it to a new location which is now the De La Salle Santiago Zobel School in Ayala Alabang Village, and not La Salle Green Hills, contrary to what most people think.

Velasco Bldg. hospital? Hmmm. Anyways before the Velasco Bldg. was constructed that area used to be a parking lot. And there used to be a tennis court (or handball?) at the present-day amphitheatre.

DLSU premises also became a garrison of the Japanese invaders, specially the La Salle building where the brothers were massacred, as well as CSB's area. St. Scholastica's college also became a garrison where some nuns were also massacred. Infact, the entire(not sure) Taft Avenue became garrisons.

1. The main Bldg. of UST is actually made up of 50 independent structures a few centimeters apart and just connected by loose cement in between. This is why during an earthquake,the 50 individual structures just move independently and act to support each other. Also, the foundation of said bldg.is the first rolling foundation in the country.

2. The back portion of the Arc of the Centuries of UST is the original Arc that was built in the 17th century in Intramuros where the original UST was located. The Arc was transported piece by piece from Intramuros to UST in the 1940,s. The Arc of the Centuries serves as the Gateway and lasting legacy to the thousands of distinguished men & women who have passed thru the portals of the Pontifical University.

When they put up La Salle Greenhills during the 50's, De La Salle University still continued offering grade school and high school classes in its Taft campus. When DLSU decided to stop offering elementary and secondary education in its Main campus due to expansion purposes, they moved the grade school and high school levels to the newly-built campus in Ayala Alabang, which is now De La Salle Zobel. And even up to now, it is De La Salle Zobel, and not La Salle Greenhills, that is part of the De La Salle University System.

De La Salle University - Manila:

- formally welcomed students on June 16, 1911 on 652 Calle Nozaleda in Paco, Manila;
- transferred to its present site on Taft Avenue in 1921;
- turned co-educational in 1973;
- was granted a University charter in 1975 ;)

some trivia about the ust and the ateneo which i've always wanted to know:

(1) where in intramuros are the former campuses of the ust and the ateneo located? who owns them now and what building/house stands on those premises today?

(2) has ust always been co-educational?

(3) when did the ateneo turn co-educational? when was it granted a university charter?

(4) in the uaap, the ust was once known as the glowing goldies. why "the glowing goldies"?

(5) in terms of size, which between the two is bigger in terms of land occupied?

thanks a million for those who'll devote some time to answer:)

To Palaso: I will try my best to answer your inquiries about UST,but not all of them, OK. So, here goes:

The Original place where UST used to be in Intramuros is now occupied by a Bank (if im not mistaken, monte de piedad-not sure). I do not know the exact street though.

The University of Santo tomas was open only to Men from 1611 to 1931. It accepted its first women students in 1932, by order of the Congregation of Studies of the Hole See( meaning ,the Pope). UST is a pontifical University and up to the present is under the direct supervision of the Pope.Therefore, all matters pertaining to policies must be approved by the Holy See.

The University of Santo Tomas teams and athletes in any sports event( including UAAP)was originally known as the Glowing Goldies because Gold is the official color of the University.This name was first used in 1928.In fact, the glowing goldies of UST achieved so much success in the UAAP, bringing in most of the Basketball Championships from 1938 to 1969( a total of 14 championships, including 2 4peats).However, the glowing goldies suffered an unusually long title drought from 1970 to 1992 ( 23 years).After more than 2 decades of frustrating campaign in basketball, the University Sports officials decided to discard the old glowing goldies name and change it into a more competitive monicker(preferably an animal). So, the golden growling tigers was born. Strangely enough, after this name change, UST went on to win 4 straight UAAP titles starting with that monumental sweep in 1993, then 1994 grandslam wherein the men, women, and juniors teams all won the championship,the1995 3peat, and the 1996 4ward. Call it pahiyang or what, but it was quite effective.

In terms of land occupied, Ateneo is definitely bigger( 60 hectares, i think). UST only occupies 22 hectares, although that is still a big campus.

Well, I hope I was able to satisfy your inquiries. I will try to look up your first question regarding the name of the street. Thankyou.
