Moving this to the Campus Forum...
ko-be-llon, I believe they have other reasons in abolishing your prom, which they don't want to share. Last year's prom was a mess right? Lotsa things happened, daming arguments, a lot of people got in trouble... Oh well...

i think that zobel also has the same problems but its not that serious. zobel's administration always threatens the student council that they will not allow them to hold a prom under the name of zobel.
but each and every year, the student council is able to hold a prom in a hotel. last year's prom was held at the manila polo club after months of debate between the administration, the students, and the parents. thanks to the parents association, the necessary arrangements were made with the manila polo club.
you see, even if the administration doesn't like the idea, it doesn't mean that anything could be done. tell your student council president, de castro i think to hold an underground prom or something like that. don't worry, i can totally empathize with you guys. we were once under the same situation.

JED....ok yan topic mo ahh...anyway...THE PROM has been a tradition in Southridge as well as in other schools, I don't see the reason why this school removed it. They said that it is because of some major conflict had happened...but com'on we should enjoy high school....it is one of the best times of our lives. If PAREF removes it, then they will be removing HIGHLIGHT of this time. ~_^

Why not ask the Council to organize their own Prom? The MS said that they'll allow Proms as long as it doesn't carry the Southridge name. Do what the Zobel Council did. They organized their own prom.

Zobel's prom last year was in manila polo club nga...but it wasn't underground...The school agreed to have it na as long as it wasn't in a hotel. I'm sure your student council (southridge)will come up with a plan..kaya nyo yan! Risky nga lang to have it underground...
I think this school year Zobel has the same problem again...i'm not sure though... Well good luck sa planning...sakit sa ulo yan! pero masaya...hehehe

actually, the prom of zobel last year was supposed to be in hotel intercon but the admi didn't want anything that extravagant. so the council of zobel initially planned an underground prom for the sake of having a prom, but let's face it - a prom is better if it carries the name of the school. so the student council sought help from the parents association, who eventually pursuaded the admi to allow the student council to hold a prom carrying the name of zobel. the admi's condition was that it shouldn't be held in a five-star hotel (as with tradition).
the administration may have their reasons but anything can be done as long as the students support it all the way. isn't SR's student council president de castro? (i forgot his first name). i know his sister eh. ask him to seek help from the parents association of southridge coz parents can really do wonders for the students.

Last year a group of juniors and Seiniors from Southridge decided to launch a certain project, called the Alternative Prom. Instead of the typical traditional prom, the students and their dates would go to an orphanage and interact with mentally-challenged kids in a children's party. Some people got pissed.
The project was advocated by the school paper, the Ridge. It did a signiture campaign to gain support, but the jack-*** assigned screwed it all up. He wasn't even in the paper! Many sigs were not legit, so the juniors, now pissed and riled up by the audacity of some seniors, used this as their argument.
They also had others: they never experienced a prom, the Ridge used the bad word konyo (which was upposed to be interpreted as "rich, cnot-nosed, spoiled brat). Many were legit, but most were done out of pure emotion, using more name-calling and honor-bashing than legal debating and arguments. One of them even wrote this letter filled with many typos and errors that should have been corrected in Grade five. The letter came from a junior. Boy were the editors laughing their heads off with that letter, which included a crappy poem, and the line "their doing a great dishonor to the school, and should retire" (At their age, they RESIGN!!!). SEND THE BUM BACK TO GRADE SCHOOL!!!!
But the project also had support. Many people read about it in the Ridge website and sent emails of support. This came from Germany, China, Malaysia, and other countries as far off as Spain. Even important people, such as Jaime Cardinal Sin, President Estrada, former Presidnt Fidel Ramos, VP Gloria MAcapagal, and even Pope John Paul II gave leters of encouragement and support.
Both proms pushed through. The trad prom had a trump card of Manolette Dario, who attracted many to join the trad prom. That was.... sneaky.
There are many bad things about a traditional prom. First off, it's very expensive. My prom cost me 4000, my suit cost me 5000, and I still had to buy flowers! Okay, SR students (a lot of them) are rich snotty spoiled brats. BUT SOME OF US ARE POOR!!!! WALANG PERA SA BUNDOK!!!! Certain parents needed to make sacrifices. And I didn't even want to go....
Second, you just go there to talk, dance a little, eat really crappy food that tastes worse than cardboard, thwn leave. It's a really expensive soiree on suits and gowns, and a waste of the money used to get thas ballroom. That is why the organizers last year bought Dario: to keep the students inside the ballroom. Otherwise, the students would leave after the slow dance, go do their gimmiks, and some would commit very... sizzling acts of tongue-wretling in a private location.
Third, the magic of the prom is the biggest load of ******** I've heard. The prom is what you make of it, so the magic is not natural, you planned it. The teen populus is just hypnotizerd by Dawson's and She's All That. THERE IS NO MAGIC TO THE PROM!!!! And it's not essential to every teenager's life. There aren't any in Europe;it's American. But it is held in the gym, not a fancy-schmancy hotel. The American's aren't that extravagant...
But the alternative prom did not force people to attend. The students were given a choice. Even if the trad prom didn't push through, students could still skip the prom. Man always has a choice. The entire point was that it went against the plamboyance and over-extravagance of the prom that doesn't have to be there. We could amke sacrifices and compromises.
And that is also why Southridge is against having a prom. And they seem pretty serious this time....
"I am shocked an appalled......"- a line by someone for the trad prom. I still can't get it out of my head....

sabi na nga ba southridge ang nag post nito e... well i personally do not think that they should abolish the prom. they should allow the students to choose (just like what they did to us last year) where to go... anyway God gave us the freedom and taking it from our THEO teacher, it is not necessarily immoral if one chooses to go to the traditional prom (unlike what one gay teacher is saying)

They're all hypocrites in southridge. They're like : "hey give us 80,000 tuition fee and our 100,000++ bond!" then they tell their students: "Don't spend anything for your social life". So much for the spirit of POVERTY...
Except our theo teacher. tama siya, wala namang masama sa traditional prom eh. Unlike our dear adviser (no not GOD...) who tried to brainwash us all.

Tama si Kid Rock. Using tradition as a justification for the prom is pretty shallow. You shouldn't just go with the flow of things. Fight for the prom because you want the prom. The fact that Southridge, for lack of a better word, "imposes" on her students is tradition. Are you just gonna fence-sit and watch Southridge's parental arm at work simply because it's tradition? I'm not instigating you to be hostile to the anti-prom people. But make them aware that in abolishing the prom, they are practically negating your freedom. And that's against the spirit of freedom which Southridge and which Opus Dei advances.
Big_bote: hahaha! that was below the belt. ;) See ya in Judo dude. (Slam!)

The one thing I have to say about Southridge on this particular issue is that the Management Staff were as pretty much surprised as just about everyone not in the Alt-Prom Comitee. The entire idea was new, and completely unexpected. A teacher did not come up with the idea, a group of students did. Before, they just had to contend with the usual extravagent prom thing, but a new idea came about and caused a..... near-apocalyptic showdown.
First off, the MS reacted as anyone would, humanly. They were faced with a tought decision, with difficult objectives: to pacify the students, to give everyone a choice in the matter, to prevent any further excalation of the manner, and to execute their decision in a correct and Christian manner. They may have screwed things up, but they were under a lot of stress.
Second, they do not impose anything out of the ordinary. The name "Southridge" belongs to the school. The MS, as representatives of the school, have the right to allow and refuse use of the name. However, since the students and organizers pf the prom will be coming from Southridge, people will label and stereotype this prom as the "SR Prom", no matter how unofficial.
Third. The Alt-Prom comitee still gave you a choice last year. The current seniors chose to go to whichever prom they chose. Sure, some of the members of the comitee were talking to others abou going, but it was all up to each individual in the end. No man has the right, nor the ability, to take away one's or another's free will. That is what separates us from animals.
I will end with this message: Seniors, do what you want. True, the prom is not an evil thing, but the Alt-Prom is also a good thing. You experience two kinds of "spirituality" in these proms, both of which will improve you as a person. Hold both a traditional and a alternative prom on separate dates if you which, but no mater which you go to, the good effects will be negated if you keep all your biases and prejudices in your heart. If you don't want to, DON'T. This goes to the current junikors who don't want to go to any. Yes it's tradition, but certain traditions have to be broken to improve the human race. I'll be the first to admit my prom experiences were not too dramatic, both the Alt and the Trads I've been too. But I experienced a lot of good things in the Alternative Prom, and I want you all to experience it too. Just let go of your hatrd, your emotions, and come up with a rational, intelligent and mutually beneficial agreement with all parties involved. The debates last year degenerated to name-calling, cussing and various other forms of barbaric behavior. When you negotiate try not to let that happen again.
And to the current Ridge staffers, if Franco Mabanta sends another one of his letters, please post it here.... They were hillarious!
