THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED

Star Circle Quest winner Hero Angeles moves behind the camera document an unexpected detour during his Lenten road trip to Northern Luzon. The story in his words and photos.

As an artist, I'm an unorthodox in how I think and view the world around me. So when our family took a vacation during the Holy Week, we decided to venture up north with barely a plan or an idea on where we were going. We only had a vague option of going up to Pagudpud in Ilocos Norte to take in the sights and do a bit of swimming at the beach.

At 1 am on Good Friday, my parents, three siblings, sister-in-law and her son began our northern odyssey with the city still covered in darkness. We breezed through the provinces of Pampanga, Pangasinan, Tarlac and La Union, watching penitents carrying crosses along the country roads. When we hit Ilocos Sur, we soon learned the true meaning of life in the tropics when we were greeted by an almost overwhelming dry heat. We made a stopover in the town of Candon where I even haggled with the local vendors selling <i>kalamay</i>. This sticky rice treat became our substitute for the usual chips and snacks for the three-day trip.

The weather change drastically when we finally reached Pagudpud. Since it already faces the South China Sea, it was really cold, not to mention, rainy. Right after realizing that Pagudpud is already fully booked, we decided that this just might be the start of the real adventure that could lead us to discover places rarely traveled.

Pagudpud is already Ilocos Norte's gateway to the Cagayan Valley and we stuck to the road from Pagudpud, trusting that it would lead us somewhere enchanting. That's how we discovered the ghost town-like island called Claveria. The roads were nearly empty, the skies were getting darker and he place started to get eerie--there were houses but no one was walking or wandering around--not a single one. We noticed that there were only very few houses and it seems like all communication and technology were lost. Before we reached the end of the road, we felt nervous; it seemed that the road was directing us towards the sea so we quickly drove back to find our way out of the town. We stopped to ask and looked for a store because we were alread hungry. And when our car stopped, people slowly got out of their houses one by one, staring at us, probably surprised that a bunch of strangers wandered off to their place.

I felt as if I reached the very ends of the Philippines. The coastline was so isolated and so different from what I was used to seeing in beaches nearer to the city. I also discovered how fascinating the rock formations and plant life were, even the climate, in the north compared to what we usually see and have in Metro Manila. It felt and looked as if I was no longer in the Philippines. The view was just perfect.

Even more interesting were the people themselves. Their skin color was neither brown nor black but almost olive, looking healthy. I should say they looked like the Filipinos in the olden times that Manansala depicted in his paintings. They looked very Pinoy--without even a trace of any Spanish or Chinese features on them.

I couldn't help but bring out my camera, a Nikon FM 10, to capture this special journey. I used available light in capturing the scenic photos of the north, I even placed my camera on top of rocks, put it in self-timer mode, in order to get a better view of some of the spots. The possibilities of composing photographic stories in the north are just endless. I explored with different angles so I can tell my story as completely in images as I can.

Even if we had our backs and necks aching and complained about how we postured for a three-day long drive, money can't buy the experience of seeing the hidden and undiscovered beauty of the north unfolding before our very eyes. It was incomparable and very irreplaceable. True enough, you really sometimes can be a real foreigner in your own native land.

The good thing about my unexpected North Luzon trip was that I discovered a different side to the Philippines, one not seen by many people and not frequented by many tourists.

Photo 1: The strong waves of Caoayan, Cagayan. After staying overnight in Mira, Cagayan, we drove near here the following morning. The place is very peaceful and cool, and the only sound you'll hear are the big waves and the howling wind.

Photo 2: Rock corals in Burgos, Ilocos Norte. The shore of Burgos is a good stopover before heading off for Pagudpud.

Photo 3: My signature on the sand--I was here in Caoayan, Cagayan.

Photo 4: Dramatic scenery--being in the city nearly all my life, I never realized I'd travel the country this far and reach the "edge" of the Philippines.

Photo 5: Local folk of Mira, Cagayan--the people here were too charming and nice that I simply had to take my picture with them (that's me at the center). In this town, there is only one TV set. The locals were generous enough to have us stay in one of their homes for the night. We enjoyed a hearty breakfast of fresh fish, eggs, and newly harvested vegetables from our host's backyard garden.

Hero still can’t believe his luck

Only a year in showbiz, "Star Circle Quest" Batch One grand questor Hero Angeles has realized it’s tough to last in a business where new talents sprout daily and the mortality rate for survival is high. Having fulfilled his childhood dream and now considered one of the hottest young heartthrobs in tinseltown, Hero is aware he simply cannot be complacent with his soaring popularity.

After winning the title in the "Star Circle National Teen Quest" last year, Hero’s showbiz career grew by leaps and bounds. Yet even as he enjoys his dizzying popularity, he has been working hard to maintain his enviable status in the local entertainment scene.

"I know a lot of guys would want to be where I am now that’s why I am doing my best in everything that I do," asserts Hero, who’s easily recognizable with his F4-ish hair. "Being in showbiz has given me so many opportunities I could only imagine before."

Admittedly, Hero’s entry in showbiz has helped his struggling family, which underwent one financial trial after another over the course of his young life. Prior to his showbiz salvo, Hero took it upon himself to earn even a meager income to help settle his family’s financial obligations. So he looked for work while still a Fine Arts student at the University of the Philippines.

He auditioned for ABS-CBN’s "Star Circle Quest." Little did he know that his gamble would pay off and bring him success, fame and good fortune. Today, Hero is pleased to have settled some of his family’s debts with his showbiz earnings, although he is far from being the breadwinner.

He may have been an overnight sensation after he was named "Star Circle Quest" grand questor, but Hero also had his struggling years before in showbiz. He did modeling stints for print and billboards and even worked as an extra in ABS-CBN shows like "Berks" and "Sa Dulo ng Walang Hanggan."

Up to this day, there are still moments when Hero, who was initially reserved and naturally shy, finds it unbelievable how he gained stardom in such a short time. What other talents take a lifetime to do, he has achieved in considerably less than a year in showbiz.

With regular shows like "SCQ Reload" and "ASAP Fanatic" (he was also in the now-defunct "Krystala"), Hero went on to invade the big screen, too. After his first successful team-up with Sandara Park (his fellow "Star Circle Quest" finalist) in the blockbuster trilogy, "Bcuz of U," Hero gets his launching movie with Sandara as part of the love team in Jose Javier Reyes’ "Can This Be Love."

Star Cinema executives obviously felt it was the right time to give Hero and Sandara their solo movie. And they did make the right decision. "Can This Be Love" is now making a killing at the box-office. The movie also stars Roxanne Guinoo, Joross Gamboa, Aaron Villaflor, Paw Diaz, Raphael Martinez and Erika Clemente, with Tirso Cruz III, Roderick Paulate and Eugene "Simang" Domingo.

"Can This Be Love" is a romantic drama-comedy about a Filipino nursing student (Hero) who wants to leave the country for greener pastures and a Korean exchange student (Sandara) who falls in love with the Philippines. The two did not expect to find true love from each other. The film is written and directed by Jose Javier-Reyes.

"It’s a Romeo and Juliet story set in a situation called the university belt," describes direk Joey Reyes of the plot. "It also tackles the dilemma of Koreans in the Philippines. The film proves in the end that love is never meant to be an obligation. It’s a choice and privilege."

The love team of Hero and Sandara is undoubtedly the most successful in local showbiz today. Their chemistry on-screen is very evident, complementing their talents, good looks and charisma. Of course, it is inevitable that romance is an angle that will be exploited to keep the Hero-Sandara love team marketable. Yet, even without a real-life relationship, Hero and Sandara have gained a growing legion of followers.

"From the time we worked together in SCQ, we became the best of friends and I guess that’s important," Hero says. "We’ve remained good friends. Sandy is someone I can turn to when I need someone to talk to. She’s always there and she’s ready to listen. I don’t see anything wrong if I fall in love with her, but we’re best friends and I don’t want to destroy that friendship.

"Up to now, I still couldn’t believe that Sandy and I have a launching movie. Parang ang bilis ng mga pangyayari. But I’m really very thankful to Star Cinema dahil pinagkatiwalaan nila kami ng solo movie namin."

Hero admires Sandara for her ability to remain tough in a business which can break one’s career instantly. "I know showbiz can be cruel, especially when they say or write negative things about you," Hero maintains. "But Sandy knows how to handle it. I know she cries sometimes, but she survives the intrigues."

Hero feels sad that their love team has to break up, although only temporarily, since Sandara has to return to Korea to study and take a much needed vacation. She will be away for five months, as she will also enroll in a few units to start her college education. She is set to take up mass communications. But Hero sees this development as a bigger challenge to his steadily rising showbiz career.

"I’ll go solo when Sandy is not here. I’ll try to explore other fields in my career. Sabi nga nila, sa isang love team, may maiiwan. Actually, ‘di naman talaga mawawala ang love team namin. Temporary lang na mawawala si Sandy. Babalik din naman siya."

Aside from his showbiz commitments, Hero’s studies (he is taking up visual communication at the University of the Philippines) also keep him busy. In whatever he does, he tries to stay focused. "It’s important to know your priorities. That way, you keep your life balanced and organized."

SANDARA Park stole the limelight at the launching of the "Singles" album at the Dish. "I'm here to support my friends, Karel Marquez and Maoui David," she says. We thought she's left back for Korea. "Not yet. My stay here is indefinite."

We congratulate her for the success of her movie, "Can This Be Love." We saw it and she's definitely the one who carried it. She has a lovable winning presence, something we wish we could also say for her partner. Sandara won't say what caused her rift with Hero Angeles, but someone told us she got hurt when Hero reprimanded her for her decision to go back to Korea because he lost so much possible revenue for commercials that they were supposed to do together. We're told that even Director Joey Reyes says he won't direct Hero anymore. We also heard even some advertising agencies are not so hot in getting him anymore as they have a hard time dealing with his family. At the blowout for the success of their movie, Sandara went from table to table to thank everyone personally. But, Hero didn't do the same and came with a retinue of about 30 friends and family members who couldn't even fit in the very small venue. Tell us all these horror stories about Hero aren't true.

SANDARA Park stole the limelight at the launching of the "Singles" album at the Dish. "I'm here to support my friends, Karel Marquez and Maoui David," she says. We thought she's left back for Korea. "Not yet. My stay here is indefinite."

We congratulate her for the success of her movie, "Can This Be Love." We saw it and she's definitely the one who carried it. She has a lovable winning presence, something we wish we could also say for her partner. Sandara won't say what caused her rift with Hero Angeles, but someone told us she got hurt when Hero reprimanded her for her decision to go back to Korea because he lost so much possible revenue for commercials that they were supposed to do together. We're told that even Director Joey Reyes says he won't direct Hero anymore. We also heard even some advertising agencies are not so hot in getting him anymore as they have a hard time dealing with his family. At the blowout for the success of their movie, Sandara went from table to table to thank everyone personally. But, Hero didn't do the same and came with a retinue of about 30 friends and family members who couldn't even fit in the very small venue. Tell us all these horror stories about Hero aren't true.

THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED

Star Circle Quest winner Hero Angeles moves behind the camera document an unexpected detour during his Lenten road trip to Northern Luzon. The story in his words and photos.

As an artist, I'm an unorthodox in how I think and view the world around me. So when our family took a vacation during the Holy Week, we decided to venture up north with barely a plan or an idea on where we were going. We only had a vague option of going up to Pagudpud in Ilocos Norte to take in the sights and do a bit of swimming at the beach.

At 1 am on Good Friday, my parents, three siblings, sister-in-law and her son began our northern odyssey with the city still covered in darkness. We breezed through the provinces of Pampanga, Pangasinan, Tarlac and La Union, watching penitents carrying crosses along the country roads. When we hit Ilocos Sur, we soon learned the true meaning of life in the tropics when we were greeted by an almost overwhelming dry heat. We made a stopover in the town of Candon where I even haggled with the local vendors selling <i>kalamay</i>. This sticky rice treat became our substitute for the usual chips and snacks for the three-day trip.

The weather change drastically when we finally reached Pagudpud. Since it already faces the South China Sea, it was really cold, not to mention, rainy. Right after realizing that Pagudpud is already fully booked, we decided that this just might be the start of the real adventure that could lead us to discover places rarely traveled.

Pagudpud is already Ilocos Norte's gateway to the Cagayan Valley and we stuck to the road from Pagudpud, trusting that it would lead us somewhere enchanting. That's how we discovered the ghost town-like island called Claveria. The roads were nearly empty, the skies were getting darker and he place started to get eerie--there were houses but no one was walking or wandering around--not a single one. We noticed that there were only very few houses and it seems like all communication and technology were lost. Before we reached the end of the road, we felt nervous; it seemed that the road was directing us towards the sea so we quickly drove back to find our way out of the town. We stopped to ask and looked for a store because we were alread hungry. And when our car stopped, people slowly got out of their houses one by one, staring at us, probably surprised that a bunch of strangers wandered off to their place.

I felt as if I reached the very ends of the Philippines. The coastline was so isolated and so different from what I was used to seeing in beaches nearer to the city. I also discovered how fascinating the rock formations and plant life were, even the climate, in the north compared to what we usually see and have in Metro Manila. It felt and looked as if I was no longer in the Philippines. The view was just perfect.

Even more interesting were the people themselves. Their skin color was neither brown nor black but almost olive, looking healthy. I should say they looked like the Filipinos in the olden times that Manansala depicted in his paintings. They looked very Pinoy--without even a trace of any Spanish or Chinese features on them.

I couldn't help but bring out my camera, a Nikon FM 10, to capture this special journey. I used available light in capturing the scenic photos of the north, I even placed my camera on top of rocks, put it in self-timer mode, in order to get a better view of some of the spots. The possibilities of composing photographic stories in the north are just endless. I explored with different angles so I can tell my story as completely in images as I can.

Even if we had our backs and necks aching and complained about how we postured for a three-day long drive, money can't buy the experience of seeing the hidden and undiscovered beauty of the north unfolding before our very eyes. It was incomparable and very irreplaceable. True enough, you really sometimes can be a real foreigner in your own native land.

The good thing about my unexpected North Luzon trip was that I discovered a different side to the Philippines, one not seen by many people and not frequented by many tourists.

Photo 1: The strong waves of Caoayan, Cagayan. After staying overnight in Mira, Cagayan, we drove near here the following morning. The place is very peaceful and cool, and the only sound you'll hear are the big waves and the howling wind.

Photo 2: Rock corals in Burgos, Ilocos Norte. The shore of Burgos is a good stopover before heading off for Pagudpud.

Photo 3: My signature on the sand--I was here in Caoayan, Cagayan.

Photo 4: Dramatic scenery--being in the city nearly all my life, I never realized I'd travel the country this far and reach the "edge" of the Philippines.

Photo 5: Local folk of Mira, Cagayan--the people here were too charming and nice that I simply had to take my picture with them (that's me at the center). In this town, there is only one TV set. The locals were generous enough to have us stay in one of their homes for the night. We enjoyed a hearty breakfast of fresh fish, eggs, and newly harvested vegetables from our host's backyard garden.

well, they had this F4/MG dance number, and in the last part, they would be raising their right hand, pointing upward like drawing the rainbow in the sky(or something to that effect!)...what joros did was hit Hero's head as his arm was descending. not hard, but it was like a follow-through motion(like tennis:p) enough to move Hero's head.

it could be a joke for him, but i sure hell don't want anyone to smack me in the head!
