Territorial yes – I've seen some guard (and sometimes fight) for them, especially in the SEC/EDSA Walk area.

yeah that's the downside of it. pero once you start to stay in these tambayans, you start to feel different. na-at-"home" ka bigla. we really can't blame them if they try to defend their homes :D

ok lang kung may bench ka pero kakaasar yung mga taong nagiging territorial nga - i mean, fine, some people have their "official" hangouts but if someone else sits there by mistake whats the big deal? they make a big deal kasi. kasi naman technically no one OWNS those benches - unless u really have documents to prove that u own a certain bench but duh, there's no such thing. so technically these anal people have no right to be so territorial because benches were placed there for the convenience of ALL people and not as labels for certain people, so they do NOT own them http://www.pinoyexchange.com/silly.gif

well my friends and i hang out at the SEC and yes, we are also very territorial. why? simply because this wasn't a bench that we got very easily. to get where we are now, we had to fight lots of people, all of them upperclassmen. some of the newbies that hang out at SEC do not know this because they never experienced fighting for their tambayan. it was just given to them.
if someone sits there by mistake, fine. ok lang yun mistake nga eh di ba? pero kung lagi naman atang "nagkakamali" eh iba na yun. weve had experiences just this school year especially during the Tuesday 730 labs na they would ask to sit in our benches and fine ok lang. pero aba, mamaya buong class yata ininvite na nila na umupo sa tambayan namin at gusto pa ata kaming i-overpower. eh hindi na ata tama yan.
SOME people who dont have tambayans are the ones who complain about people who have tambayans as being territorial. this is what i have to say. you guys just dont understand or you try not to understand. this tambayan was not easy to come by for most of us. especially the seniors and juniors now. we really had to fight for it. wala nung panahon namin ng mga benches along Kostka, Berchmans and SEC na pwedeng tambayan no! kung naiinis naman kayo sa kanila eh di sabihin niyo! madali namang kausap yung mga tao sa SEC eh!
--- a friendly reminder from the BBB, the people who hang out at SEC

i'm not a tambay of any of the benches no... but i hang out at the colayco hall.
i have to say that some people along the caf and edsa walk benches are sort of "at home"... well, i have to say that kahit ako, I feel at home at Colayco...

I think this whole territory thing is STUPID. The benches are there for EVERYONE, not just a select minority. it think it should be a "first come, first served" policy for the benhes.

put it this way, people who have their own tambayans somehow feel powerful among the rest... its like having a head quarters where you're allowed to say and do whatever you want.
but then again, they do annoy some of us, if you cant beat them...IGNORE THEM! ;)

I'm was never a bencher or anything as an Ateneo undergrad before pero kung alam niyo lang ang ginagawa ng mga iba sa gabi --- don't you guys ever wonder why the benches stink every now and then? I guess that's why I never sat there --- coz I know for a fact that people actually piss on those benches especially after inuman.

I'm not generalizing. There are some [specific places withheld] that this … "sharing" is not so evident. You sit down in one of their benches just to relax when no one's there, and when the whole gang comes, they start giving you the eye (although not through direct eye contact). Some places, in SEC and EDSA, for example, there're people who are like that.
Moreover, of course you'll OFFER your bench. Its the school's, and everyone has the right to that. As some people would say, "Ang kapal naman ng mukha kung hindi nagpaupo".

Yes Ateneans are quite territorial but they have a reason to do so. Getting a bench isn't merely asking "pretty please".
Nobody really owns the benches but that was the way it is since way back.

I am a bencher. All those who think that being territorial is wrong do not understand a few things.
We fought for those tambayans. We woke up early just so we could sit on a bench and eventually legitimize our claim there. Our tambayans are pretty much our second homes. Kahit walang tao dun iniiwan namin gamit dun because for us it IS our territory.
We constantly fight for them.
Kami nga dati konti lang sa tambayan. Then may nakitambayan which eventually became our friends. Lumaki tuloy ng husto yung tambayan namin[last count was 40].
Ganyan talaga eh. Don't fight it because it IS the college culture. you don't like it? guess what, there are a lot of things you won't like in college. This is just one of them.
If you must know our tambayan is located at the caf entrance facing the quad. to your left guys. yes we're noisy.

The argument of those who have tambayans is that they "fought" hard for these benches, but I think it still does not fully justify their right to "own" these places. after all, as others have said, everybody owns the benches - we paid the same tuition and there aren't documents to prove ownership.
However - we have to respect the fact that these people have gotten used to this place - "at home" na nga. of course, tambayans hold memories of friendship, fun, etc.. that's why it's become part of the ateneo culture.
but i think, it's still unacceptable if someone sits at the tambayan by mistake, he/she will get hostility from it. kung walang tao sa bench o kung hindi naman alam ng tao na may nagtatambay pala dun, ok lang na umupo siya dun - of course, alangan namang magtayo-tayo lang siya dun at mangalay ang mga binti niya noh! if people see that there are already many people sitting on the bench, they will surely feel that it's inappropriate to sit down and try to squeeze themselves - it's just common sense. however, if there's enough space naman and if it won't bother the tambayan people that much, paupuin naman kung nakita nyong nangangalay na (for example, while waiting to get inside the classroom near the tambayan)
besides, i strongly feel that there are tambayans in cetain buildings that should be given to those who have classes there. for example, sec 2 where the bio labs are. i guess it's too late for the bio people occupy the benches there since may nauna na pero sana right from the start sana nabigay na sa bio people so that we can *study* there while waiting for the lab exams to begin. sayang nga lang at di talaga mag-work yung tambayan for bio majors so dun na lamang ang iba sa mga lockers near the bio dept.
good thing that the chem people get to stay .. (where else) the chem bldg. bec it's practical, it's convenient and it makes a lot of sense. other tambayans though like sa caf, quad, edsa may be taken by anyone.. kung nagkataon na palagi kayo nandun e di tambayan nyo na yan. it shouldn't be like, "ayun, let's make that our target. let's fight everyone!" tambayans should come "naturally". anyway, mahirap talaga sa tambayan kasi parang ang hirap mag-aral - all you want to do is talk to the people sitting beside you. well, others can still concentrate.. :D

if you think about it, bakit nga big deal sa Ateneans ang benches?

i used to tambay with my friends in berchmans hall. i was in second year when we got that bench and we worked hard (don't wanna say "fought")to get that bench. iba ang feeling pag may tambayan eh. parang second home na. you can meet with your friends there even if you have different courses or schedules. we would even rent lockers near our bench. i think there's nothing wrong with being territorial with these benches. it's part of making college life fun and "homey".

i agree. it's really difficult to secure one of those spots. yung kostka bench namin end of march pa lang nilalagay na namin yung bags namin don and the seniors occupying it were asar, syempre. medyo kakainis nga (unfair, i guess) kasi yung mga katabi namin sophs at freshies, whn noon only juniors and seniors have the privilege of these 'domains'. pero ang galing kasi we don't get to sit there na, but my friend leaves a bag sa bench which establishes its being owned and nobody sits there. siguro paisa-isang freshman o outsider. oh, no, we're not selfish. in fact may mga nakikiupo nga when we're there. chinichika pa namin kahit di kilala. as long as, yun na nga, di nakakaabala. but fortunately nobody's tried to 'steal' it from us. just goes to show established na sa Ateneo culture na may kanya-kanyang teritoryo at kabastusan na lang kung isiksik mmo sarili mo.

Just wanted to share a story.
A few months back, 1/2 of our tambayan( the one directly in front of the caf near the berchmans/caf shortcut walk) was removed and was replaced by a monobloc bench. The benches were new and a lot of these benches were added in the campus. We sat there, since it was our tambayan, but decided to leave for a while because of the rain and the roof leaked. Seeing that the bench was empty, a whole block of freshmen decided to sit there and we let them be. The next day, the sun was shining and the roof didnt leak and so we sat there again. Some of the freshmen who sat there the day before started passing us and gave us THE EYE. you know, dagger looks) then they were shouting at our direction "bench namin yan ah, P$#@^$%$*!". We ignored them. But then one came along with an alumni who tried to intimidate us. He even started bullying one of our friends and if it were not for a female mediator it could have erupted into a bench fight.
Freshies, mag-aral muna kayo! Try to stay in Ateneo first before you start looking for a tambayan!

Sorry ha, I'm a veteran na, graduated 97. What is SEC? Are the Cono Bench, Quad Boys, Dog House, Berch Boys, ASSOC bench, Snake Pit still called by the same name. If not, do you guys know what it is called now?
Back then, we were not hostile to people who accidentally stayed in our bench. Then again, this was rare, given the fact na medyo nakakatakot kami tingnan. We never intimidated, or made a proactive move to get rid of tresspassers. Pero napapansin naman nila pag dumadami na kami, and we need our benches back. They usually stay, until they need to go, but they don't come back to "claim" the spot. i think its fairly obvious na marami naman kami doon. And it was very common that during the times na medyo wala kami or not in full force, we let other people sit. This happens every Tuesday, Thursday, mornings, and afternoons. Yun lang nga, marami talaga kami pag noon. And we let people we know, batchmates, and others hang around our place. And we like the company. EDSA walk kasi, s oeverybody passes by, says Hi, talk for a while, and meet there.
Wag lang kasi maging social climbers. Freshmen, we know if your trying to do this. Masyadong plastic ang dating and to tell you the truth, kind of pathetic. Observe and get to know the people first. Don't try to hang around a tambayan for the reason that you want to be "in - crowd" and you want to be seen there.
