Just a q: Does it matter? Is there a problem if some people prefer to call it "The Ateneo"? I personally sometimes call it Ateneo, sometimes The Ateneo. It really doesn't matter eh.

http://www.pinoyexchange.com/thinker.gif http://www.pinoyexchange.com/thinker.gif Why do ateneans refer to their school as "THE Ateneo"? Shouldn't they just refer to Ateneo as Ateneo?

actually napansin ko din yon! im not annoyed or anything pero there's this person (she's a student dj of some radio station) who keeps on saying it so im like... "oh ok, sige na!" She was saying 'hi im ***** (kung anuman name niya!) and im from THE ATENEO' as in whenever a song starts and after the song!
But then again, no big deal! Masaya lang siguro sila kasi proud sila sa school nila. Siguro saying 'The Ateneo' instead of just 'Ateneo' is just giving an emphasis.

I think "The Ateneo" is a more formal way of calling it, in reference to the Hall of Athena or something like that...

THE refers to something big, something extravagant, something extraordinary. When you call someone, "you're THE man!" instead of "you're a man!" di ba it refers that you're THAT something. There's the expression of awe.(tama ba?) parang the question of "what is THAT philosophy??" :)

I think you call it "The Ateneo" because strictly, that's the grammatically correct way to call it. It's wrong (although accepted na) to say, "I'm going to Ateneo." Dapat "I'm going to the Ateneo."

But since Ateneo is a name (pronoun), wouldn't it be gramatically correct? I mean, its saying something like "I'm going to <;schoolname>;", and adding the just... emphasizes it, I guess. Or am I confused here? http://www.pinoyexchange.com/wonder.gif :)
<LI>I'm going to Ateneo

Yep. 'The Ateneo' means 'the school', and it's also the grammatically correct form.
But over the years, I think people have also come to use 'the' as an honorific or mark of distinction. It's 'the' Ateneo. I go to 'the' school, as opposed to simply 'a' school. Mas mayabang pakinggan kung may 'the'.

THE ATENEO --- i've always called it that way, and as what everyone says here... calling it as such is just like making it ABOVE the rest, its THE school!

i'm not from the ateneo, but an officemate of mine who graduated there said that it is the proper way of calling their school since ateneo de manila means school/university of manila. he said that it is somewhat redunant calling it "ateneo de manila university" since ateneo and university are supposed to mean the same. so, calling it "the ateneo" is like calling it "the university/school." medyo maarte nga lang pakinggan pero it is correct.

I don't know what "Salle" means, but "La" means "The". So "La Salle" translates to "The Salle". More specifically, "De La Salle" reads "Of The Salle".
Does this help?

this was actually called to my attention by one of the HRD people at the place I work in. When they interviewed me, they asked me what school I was from and I said "I'm from Ateneo" and I was a student there for all my life. She was surprised nga coz it was her experience that people addressed it as THE Ateneo. I guess some people take it the wrong way and think of it as arrogance on our part. We have every reason to be proud of being Ateneans as long as it doesn't translate into bluster on our part.

I guess if there's anything wrong is the fact that some Ateneans are Hypocrites. They say that I'm proud to be an Atenean and take pride in studying at "the university", but all of these remain as words. When it comes to school activities, supporting our teams, and being Men/Women for Others. All is fleeting. So let's not use "The Ateneo" as a tag line to who we are. Its not an accessory that we should flaunt. Let our actions do the talking and say what we mean. In my opinion let others recognize that we are indeed deserving to be called "The University...the Ateneo" before we be the first ones to acknoledge it. http://www.pinoyexchange.com/smokin.gif
