I used to be involved in the SC where I study. Aware pa rin ako sa issues until today, but am not as active as to advocacy anymore.

i'm from the student council but it doesn't follow that when you're in the SC you care about issues... i'm glad to say that i do care, but there are a lot of people not in the SC who care too! i think being apathetic depends on whether you want to DO something about the issue or not.

ok. but i also think that working in the council is one of the
most objective way of expressing concern on social issues.
yes, i know that you can do that in other ways but working
with a bigger responsibility is a big thing. people have impressions
to these council people. what i am saying is that people
stereotyped council people as the only ones concerned.

tama si mark_mark!
http://www.pinoyexchange.com/evilgrin.gifmay impression nga na ang council members lang ang concerned and laging naiinvolve. and hindi lang impression, most likely, that's the case. the biggest challenge for any council member is to try to get a majority of the people to actively participate in activities and to make them aware. i bet every one who has worked with the student council has tried their best, to the extent of spoon-feeding the people with tinformation, to get the issues or messages through.
http://www.pinoyexchange.com/shy.gifaminado ako, i used to be uninvolved and apathetic about some issues. i thought marami pa akong mas-importanteng pwedeng gawin than to bother pa with issues na hindi naman makakaapekto sa akin directly.

i guess you really dont have to be in the SC to show that you care about issues. i mean, im not from the SC but I care...I really do! There really are just people, small minded people i guess, who dont give a damn about these. who cares, they say. but not all people are "small minded". there really are people who care...they just need a "venue" to show their concern...that's where the SC must come in.
so whoever's in the SC...give the people a venue to voice out their concern, para naman masabi nyo na people are not apathetic.
and if they are apathetic, it's their choice.

i agree with purploony :)
dapat hindi lang puro SC lang ang ineexpect na maging involved sa mga issues, dapat other student sectors maging involved din, dba? tackling school issues should be a joint effort by student leaders (not necessarily people from the SC, ha) and normal students din... problem is fast-paced lang talaga ang mga buhay ng lahat ngayon kaya minsan its hard to get involved din...

I was a member of my school's SC in College and I could say that I was very much involved in various issues at the time. It doesn't mean that everyone outside SC is not that concerned. When I was outside the SC, I was involved with people who advocated issues that we believed were relevant. Issues could be brought out of the open even if you are outside the official loop. Sometimes, you can bring an issue to the attention of the people in the SC if you present it well enough as an issue worthy of attention and action.
I'm glad that my present work lets me be involved in issues, but on a higher level. Nevertheless, I credit my term in the SC and the period I wasn't in, for helping me become aware of the state of the world around us and preparing me for this job I have right now. :)

yeah you're right! if people are apathetic its their choice. in our school, venues for concerns are readily available to students. in fact there are a lot of venues and most of the time we have to force students to react and give some feedback pa. if you don't feel this, maybe there's something wrong with your SC. Or better yet, maybe you should come out and let them know!

am in the sc and am sort of aware with the issues but i would recommend that you ask somebody else about them. being in the sc does not equate to knowing about everything, especially issues. i'm not saying that sc officers are apathetic, it's just that most of their interests lie elsewhere.

I agree with MAX, Being aware or to have projects concerning social issues doesnt necessarily a job of the SC ONLY... The Student Council needs the leaders of other organizations with these projects...
