i am a chemistry graduate student.

how about you? what made you study the sciences? it is more difficult that you ever thought it would be?

Hello adlaw, is this thread for science students only? I love chemistry, does that count? :)

i am a Biochemistry graduate.

four years ago, when i was applying for an entrance exam in UST, i don't have anything on my mind but only to take the exam and pass it.i don't have any planned-course to apply for,the only thing i know is that i wanna take up medicine in the future-so, i breezed over the listed pre-medical courses for which the UST mainly boost for and known for, and, i saw the not-so-familiar,heart-breaking course which is biochemistry.first,it's sounded like hell-in a course-imagine combining chemistry and biology,by the way,i hate chemistry during high-school,im more inclined in biology.BUT,biochemistry is totally different with that of chemistry, biology or the combination of both.i should say it is so HARD!but i survived-i love it!

Now being a medical-student,im realizing now that i have a lot of advantages in terms of the waterloo-subjects of almost all medical-students,which is microbiology and biochemistry.

its a hell in a course but i love it!

oo ba, sali ka rin dito. ;)

if you love something, you are more likely to be curious about it. and as they say "curiosity killed the cat". hehehe.

you love chemistry? why?

totoo ka. ang hirap ng biochemistry! it is actually my most hated chemistry subject.

kaya bow ako sa iyo...

Hi adlaw! I did very well in the science of the elements when I was still in HS (basta sciences I do very well talaga ;)), but I didn't consider any science course when I went to college. Although among the sciences, chemistry and bilogy are tops for me, whoops physics din pala. When I was still in HS, I was very engrossed with learning chemistry evolving from one period to another - from black magic to modern or those Avogadro's Law and atomic theory, and of course the periodic table where I was really good at. So there. Nasagot ko ba tanong?. :)

Ang isa pang mahirap sa course na biochem sa UST,eh kailangang kumuha ka ng Chemistry Board, pero, hell,Biochemistry is a lot different from Chemistry. But we have no choice but to take it!At least dalawa ang profession namin- as Chemists and Biochemists- gandang pakinggan!

so that's why magaling ka sa analysis and observation. traits which also help you in writing and everyday decisions.

Yup, I do think Biochemistry would be a very difficult course, but the subject matter's really interesting. Of course, the recent trends in medicine point to biochemists as major players. Given a choice to take graduate studies, I'd probably focus on biochemistry. :)

Hi adlaw! :D

I was reading about atmospheric chemistry the other day. Mahilu-hilo talaga ako. Oh, now I wonder if we have enough atmospheric chemists there in the Philippines? Lalo na we have to deal with these very critical environmental issues blah-blah. I don't know but it is kinda interesting to learn more about the anthropogenic impact on the atmosphere stuff. Hmmm...

chemistry can not explain quantum mechanics because quantum mechanics ought to explain chemistry...

i studied quantum chemistry, and we used it to calculate the energy levels of the electron. ;)

at saka chemistry is a practical science.

even the new economy needs chemistry. computers needs their silicon chips and stylish cases. kung walang chemistry research, i don't think lalago ang new economy na iyan. pati iyong genome project, the backbone is biochemistry. it just needs those supercomputers to speed up the calculations and stuff. kaya nga basic science kasi THE spinal cord iyan of any new technology that will be invented.

marami akong kilala na environmental scientists but usually handling water pollutants. and i know somebody from UP who is applying for graduate studies in atmospheric sciences here in my institute. sana makuha siya.

my training is marine geochemistry. so bale i trace the movement of the water masses in the oceans using ultra-trace metals like the rare earth elements (REEs) . but as a sideline, i also measured the REEs in some river waters in japan and thailand. i found a high level of gadolinium pollution in the rivers of tokyo kasi they use gadolinium compounds for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in hospitals... ;)

Hi adlaw, for sure your job is very exciting.
Do you by any chance know something about the Philippine environmental issues like those of Thailand and Japan? What are the environmental scientists or the geochemits doing in addressing these issues? It's going to be informative for us who are quite not learned about this stuff. Thanks.

o sige §inned, this will be a series of notes on the environmental status in the philippines.

but first i will have to start with what i have done myself. :D

i also measured the REEs in the surface waters from the surigao strait to the sulu sea. in a station of the sulu sea, i further measured the REEs comprising a vertical profile, meaning from the surface to a depth of 5 kilometers down. no abnormal concentrations there, which goes to show that our hospitals are not high tech enough to use the MRI technology i have mentioned above. kasinglinis tayo ng thailand. kasing low tech, din. :D

in cebu, where i am based, we do a lot of environmental assessment studies for DENR. so far,the heavy metal (Pb, Cd, Zn, Cu) concentrations in the river waters of cebu are below the limit set by the environmental protection agency. but, the industrialization of cebu will definitely change this. i know somebody from waseda who is working on water treatment technology. i do hope he goes back to cebu. kailangan natin ng doctor ng environment...

although cebu's rivers are clean in terms of heavy metals, we could not say so biologically. ang baho kasi tinataponan ng trash. i went home last september, and although the situation has improved, madumi pa rin.

marami pa. i'll be back with inputs from other pinoy scientist. hawak ko na ang isang proceeding book. hala ka! :D

i am still tackling water pollution in our rivers. what we need to do to rehabilitate our damaged waterways is make sure that nobody throws their domestic and industrial garbage there.

domestic - we need to have an efficient system of collecting them. kailangan din na ma-segregate ang mga garbages into burnable and non-flammable ones. this is a government service, kaya sana naman ang gobyerno natin, matino. :(

industrial waste - the water waste of factories should be treated chemically before they are made to flow to our rivers. sana lahat ng factories sa pinas mayroong water treatment section...

more to come...
