Ateneo Law Wins Jessup Regionals

The Ateneo Law School Team successfully defended its championship title of the Jessup Cup, prized trophy of the Philip C. Jessup International Moot Court Competition. The regional finals that would determine the team who would represent the Philippines in the world competition in Washington DC, were held at the National Center for Culture and Arts (NCCA) in Intramuros on 19 February, and participated in by the Ateneo Law School, UP College of Law, and the UST College of Law.

Every year, representatives from the most prestigious law schools around the world (including Harvard Law School, Oxford University, National University of Singapore, and the University of Sydney) vie for the honor, competing in a mock-court format emulating the International Court of Justice, with each team arguing either for or against a specific problem before a panel of the most distinguished scholars in international law.

The Ateneo Jessup team, consisting of Joseph Anthony Lopez, Cristina Garcia Codilla, Patricia Ngochua, Evecar Cruz, and Angel Love Go, coached by 2004 Jessup Champion Aimee Dabu, swept all three categories in the regional finals: Best Team, Best Oralist (JA Lopez), and Best Memorials. The team is now preparing for the World Competitions that will be held starting 22 March 2005, with every intention to successfully defend its 2004 World Champion crown.

Good luck to Ateneo! Go for the back-to-back "World Champion" crown!!

To the losers and bashers, please stop being bitter and, for a change, learn to look at the bigger picture and support our country's best and brightest students in their quest for victory.

I was also there. UP gave a good fight, however, Ateneo was better in logic, presentation of facts and research, in the rebuttal, and was more focused on the legal aspects. The Ateneo representatives also showed better "presence" (aka mas lawyer at professional ang dating), which is very important when you're competing internationally.

Congrats again to Ateneo!!! One Big Fight!! Bring home the world championship!!

Congrats to the Ateneo team for sweeping all three categories in the regional finals: Best Team, Best Oralist, and Best Memorials.

A truly dominating performance by the "best and brightest" of the top law school in the Philippines.

One Big Fight! Bring home the "World Championship" title again!

Truly world class!

i was also there during the match.

Here are some of my thoughts.

1. The Ateneo Jessup team did not defend the Jessup championship yet; the phrase, "The Ateneo Law School Team successfully defended its championship title of the Jessup Cup," is misleading. They only defended the right to represent the country and compete in Washington. it is in washington that they will defend the cup.

2. The Ateneo team's form was excellent but they lack a little bit of substance. They were not able to answer the arguments posed by the UP team, were not able to fully answer the questions of the judges, and were "buried" by the rebuttal of the UST team.

3. To be the winning team, the scores of the memorials submitted and the oral arguments are combined. The UP team incurred a lot of penalties while the Ateneo team had minimal or even no penalties. As such, for UP to win, it needed to totally demolish the Ateneo team, which it was unable to do.

4. The two oralists of the Ateneo team argued both sides. This was quite impressive, considering that a lot of preparation is needed to fully argue just one side. However, as stated, as long as Ateneo had a good showing, it was assured of going to Washington.

5. UST was also impressive. It was the first time they ever competed and this affected their form which hurt their chances. Their oral arguments were, however, very logical and precise. I hope they continue to compete in the Jessup.

I hope more law schools join the competition.

I still am in that baffled state up to this point why Ateneo won over UP. I watched this competition live, and honestly, almost all spectators thought UP should have won. They were really great debaters.

I left the building after they declared Ateneo won. Being an ateneo instructor, nahihiya ako sa sarili ko sa nangyari. nag sisigaw ng "booooooo" ang mga tao.

^ ^ Obviously, you were not there. There was no booing, only applause.

Stop whining and being a sore loser just because UP lost again (just like in the ORSP competition, L'Oreal, HSBC IT competition, ACM Programming, etc.). :bigcry:

You should not be ashamed of losing to the "best and brightest." That should inspire you to work harder on improving yourself. Ateneo has set the bar higher. They are going to compete internationally. As Filipinos, we should be proud of the fact that we have international-caliber students.

Bottom line: Ateneo won, you lost. It's not the end of the world for losers. Just move on and get a life.

Ang saya-saya pa rin talaga when you're #1. :spinstar:

Personal opinions and bashing aside, we still can't deny the fact that Ateneo is the best when it comes to debating. No school can match Ateneo's track record or even come close to it despite the occasional flukes and chambas. Galing talaga ng Ateneo. Kakainggit noh?

Ang saya talaga when you're #1. Ang daming mga crabs at inggitero. Just check out the posts/bashing above. Iba na talaga when you're #1.

No wonder the Ateneo is widely ackowledged as the "Harvard, MIT and OXBRIDGE of the Philippines." :spinstar:

There is a difference between mooting and debating. Mooting is more structured, like arguing in a courtroom while debating is more free-flowing.

Yes, Ateneo has a good track record but what a fluke the debating competition against University of San Carlos was. I was so embarrased to call myself an Atenean that time.

Congratulations to the UP HKRC team. UP has the better track record in mooting. They were the first Philippine team to win the Jessup, the only Philippine team to win the Pictet International Humanitarian Law Competition and the Hong Kong Red Cross.

The UP team was good at the oral arguments, but oral arguments is only a part of the total score. I would like to emphasis that mooting is not just about public speaking skills but also written advocacy.

FACTS:
Ateneo won; the other schools lost as usual.
Ateneo is the best; the others are just wannabes.

To the losers, please stop whining, sourgraping, rationalizing your loss, etc. :bigcry:

Just learn to accept the fact you lost to the best and brightest.

Just get used to it. Losing... that is.

By the way, the Ateneo Jessup team arrived in Los Angeles on March 23rd. They were shown on TV in the news and they were also featured in the newspapers in California. Kakainggit noh! :naughty2:

I watched the Ateneo team today and they are really good. The case all the schools are using is:

BETWEEN THE REPUBLIC OF APPOLLONIA (APPLICANT)
AND THE KINGDOM OF RAGLAN (RESPONDENT)
TO SUBMIT TO THE INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE
THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE TWO STATES
CONCERNING THE VESSEL THE MAIRI MARU

http://www.ilsa.org/jessup/jessup05/compromis.htm

I'm really impressed by their performance. They really know their stuff. No crib notes whatsoever while delivering their arguments.

I really hope they make it to the finals and defend the title this Saturday.

Good Luck to Ateneo!

Naturally, nobody dared post the results because Ateneo failed to defend its crown. :)

From the ILSA website: The Ateneo team reached the octafinal (round of 16), but lost to a Venezuelan university. The eventual winner of the 2005 Shearman & Sterling Jessup Cup was the University of Queensland (Australia) (Applicant), which defeated the International Islamic University (Malaysia) (Respondent).

On a related note, the UP moot court team is currently competing in the Jean Pictet Moot Court competition in France. As of this writing, the UP team is one of nine semi-finalists.

Results of the 2005 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition:

The Ateneo ranked 11th among 103 teams from 86 countries. The team defeated Norway, Ethiopia, and France in the preliminary rounds. The team then defeated Duke University in the Run-Off Rounds and got in the octofinals. And as correctly pointed out, it lost against Universidad Catolica Andres Bello (Venezuela) in the Octo-Final Rounds.

Oralist Rankings are:
Christina Garcia Codilla - 12th
Joseph Anthony Lopez - 23rd

Memorial Ranking is 28th

Wow. Ateneo ranked 11th out of 103 teams from 86 countries!!!! That's what you can call truly world class. And to think, Ateneo is the only team who made it to the World Finals! No wonder the Ateneo is widely acknowledged as "The Harvard, MIT and Oxbridge of the Orient." The other Philippine teams were absent because they were soundly beaten kasi eh (as usual and for the nth time to the nth power). Hanggang pier lang sila!

Congrats to the Ateneo team.

However, the success of a few students in one competition is not indicative of the entire student population. I have trouble with the conclusion that Ateneo is a great law school simply because 3-4 students did well on a Jessup comp. Maybe it is the great coaching and not the school that caused their tremendous success?

Same logic can be applied to UP and the bar: Just because a UP law student topped the bar, you cant overgeneralize and say that all UP law students are great and UP is the best law school in the Phil.

Just some thoughts when I read any law school thread that degenerates into a juvenile battle of egos and insecurities between UP and Ateneo. Maybe my logic is faulty..if so, good thing I am not lawyer.

I haveno doubt that both are great law schools.

Again, congrats to the Ateneo team. They are really putting the school and the country on the map. The Jessup is one of the most prestigious law school comp in the world.
