now this is one issue that will cause utter chaos among mankind...i can just see it now...noise barrages, rallies, overnight vigils outside DECS, protest marches, picket signs, burning of flags...hehe.an exaggeration? hardly. for if i were in hs right now, and this 5th yr rule were imposed, i'll gladly do all those savage and not so savage acts i listed..perhaps even more..(like a bomb threat maybe?? :) ) just to get me and the entire student population out of such an inconceivable, hardly thinkable, totally idiotic idea proposed by who-knows-who claiming to be for the best of hs students everywhere. alright, alright...it's not that bad actually. after all, they say hs is the best time of your life, why not make it a year longer?that's one more year of memories, of fun, of cheat, of putting roaches on ur teachers chairs...so actually, it's all up to the student. but if u would ask me, the answer is definitely no. ( hey, if u were planning ur college outfits and which university to go to during lunchbreaks in hs, u would disagree too ) :P

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the extra year in high school only for those who don't have grade 7?

If it's so, I don't see any harm there. I myself took an extra year (grade 7) back in secondary school, and I believe that it helped me ultimately with regards to being academically, socially and emotionally ready for college.

alemrac: Ouch!!!

I took up Grade 7 too. It was a fun year, while the teachers were feeding us with lines like "It'll help you when you get to high school."

Or so they said. :D

i had gr 7 too way back when... t'was cool!!!

one additional year won't really matter much. it'll prepare the kids for whatever they have to go through in college --- that is if the curriculum is structured properly.

mangyayari kaya yon?

All I can say is, quality over quantity! Adding a year will not necessarily help the situation. They should do something about quality first - better teachers, better training, better facilities, etc - before they even start thinking about adding a year.

To clarify some points it is my understanding that the additional year is:
1. Free,
2. Optional,and
3. Applies only to students from the Public School.

Granting that even students from the private school are affected, I think we should be thankful for the move considering that the literacy rate of the Filipinos nowadays is very very very.......POOR.

According to what I've seen on TV last night in the Program I-WITNESS entitled JUAN....*****? the Philippines is second lowest to Africa when it comes to literacy.
