i am a scholar here in japan and im studying in kyoto university. My university is ranked 2nd in ASIA( last year, ASIAWEEK ).
i remember how hard i had to pore over the list to find that the best university in my country is only among the completely unknown schools in ASIA.

Despite the fact that UP gets P 6 Billion per yaer from the Philippine Government courtesy of the Filipino people which the country's private universities do not get, UP is increasingly finding it difficult to update its outmoded equipment and retain its better professors due to better salaries offered by the Top Private Universities.

Maybe UP should increase its currently very low Tuition Fees it charges its students since the National Government can only give so much.

No doubt UP's very low Tuition Fees is its big magnet to attract student applicants from all over the country (especially from the public schools) however its reluctance to increase its fees is currently preventing it from improving its equipment and facilities.

In a word: MONEY! The categories that UP did poorly in - research output, facilities etc. are linked to money or lack thereof.

Kulang sa BUDGET ... lalung-lalo na ngayon at binawasan pa ng government yung budget for education! Grabe! Ayusin dapat muna ng government yung breakdown nila ng budget at tanggalin yung mga excess sa iba at ilipat sa education. Hindi ba nila nararamdaman na bumababa na yung quality of education?

This is the problem with rankings of any kind. The results are dependent on the criteria used.

Yes, UP ranks low on that particular survey because of a very low research budget.

But that does not, in any way, imply that you will get a lousy education if you go to this school. If you are a good student and know how to take advantage of learning opportunities available to you, the UP is one of the few places in the world where you can get a quality education at a bargain price.

i had been studying in UP Diliman for quite a few years. Honestly, my expectations of the university as a venue for learning new and brilliant ideas were not met. All i witnessed was a playground for young people who believe that everything that UP has earned as a prestigious school should be theirs as well... and it's a very sad thing that we try to own up the honor of belonging to a great university without even knowing if we really are worthy of such title.
im presently studying in kyoto university, which, as i said, is 2nd in Asia last year;however, i dont see the japanese students walking around with their heads unbowed. maybe because theyre japanese. maybe because there's humility and pride in their hearts.

But don't you realise that part of the reason why you got in Kyoto U is because you also took your education in UP?

Tokyo University, which topped Asiaweek's 1998 survey, declined in entering last year's survey.

from the introductory article:
---------------------------------------------
Hasumi Shigehiko, who became university
president last year, decided to withdraw from the survey. "As you know, Dr. Gerhard Casper, president of Stanford University, has expressed deep reservations about similar rankings in the United States," he wrote us. "I share Dr. Casper's position, for I am also 'extremely skeptical that the quality of a university... can be measured statistically.'"
---------------------------------------------

I also agree with Mr. Shigehiko and Dr. Casper. When will people learn that you can come from the best schools in the world but still know crap.

It's not the school. It's the student. A person's aim in life is to find meaning in one's self, not to compare, contrast and rank.

Mr. makoto, I mean not to offend, but offer my own views. The last thing I want is an enemy. Peace, brother!

My respects to Kyoto U and UP. PEACE!!

Makoto, referring back to my post, kindly notice the important phrase "[if you] know how to take advantage of learning opportunities available to you..."

The learning opportunities are there, alright, just as they are in other good schools. But bad students exist everywhere, including Kyoto University. Maybe there are fewer of them where you are, but I am sure you can still find some.

You did find some spoiled brats in that "playground for young people", but you'd probably find others who were getting educated the hard and honest way, if you looked around some more.

UP's quality is tapering off, that's why.

the most obvious answer is money...
but another thing i have to say is that not only UP's quality of edication is deteriorating but all schools are also affected of it.
but for UP its so demoralizing to see the state univeristy going down and come to think of it, it has produced exmeplary graduates who have served and many still are serving the country in their own ways.

The obvious reason is lack of or inadequate funding. If the government will continue to cut the budget set for UP, we can expect the ranking of UP to go even lower. :(

the most obvious reason for UP's low ranking is funding, as everyone realizes. however, it also important to note that the purpose of college education is to train the students at their chosen field and prepare them for a future career in that field. so far, i think UP has been successful at providing that training for its students, for a price that is still among the lowest in the world. UP grads are still considered the best in the country, and i think that is still more important than any ranking or statistic.
