Which college/university has got the best website? Why?
Among UAAP schools, I think it's La Salle, next is UP, and third is UE. La Salle was even nominated in last year's webby awards. Three years ago it was also listed as one of the best university websites in the world along with Harvard University. It also got a three star rating from Magellan. UP's sites are also simple and the layout is good.

Not Ateneo's, definitely. :) But then the site's undergoing a major revamp, so I'll wait until that's over.

Which Ateneo website are you talking about? www.admu.edu.ph (http://www.admu.edu.ph) is impressive...not www.ateneo.net! (http://www.ateneo.net!)

I have to give credit also to my alma mater's website, UST..its simple but classy...it was also nominated in the Phil Web award a year ago along with DLSU. Look at the web sites of its colleges and faculties and you will see the difference. Although some are not constantly updated or non-existent but at least may laman...unlike others na puro seal lang ng colleges nila ang nakalagay...
Other web sites worth mentioning are...La Salle....UP....UE.....Ateneo's Web site is not bad at all......

Matrabaho kahit papaano ang paggawa ng website. You can't just rely on HTML alone. Me iba na gumagamit pa ng Flash and other graphix enhancing softwares. Mas maganda ang website mo, mas makakaattract ka ng visitor.

^ not only that, some websites actually use server-side scripts as well to enhance interactivity.
mahirap kung sa mahirap, but i think it's necessary for schools to put up their own websites. It says a lot about the quality of education that they offer.
Some even look better than what they really are because of their websites.

content wise UP's website is good pero di masyado maganda yung layout. But anything you need to ask for a university nandun lahat unlike other schools na kulang kulang. The good thing about UP's Website is that all its colleges has its own links with complete infos about the curriculum etc.
Ateneo and La Salle's Weby has the best layout! ASTIG!
atenean_blooded
Oct 11, 2004, 12:07 AM
La Salle's website used to be much, much better. The current design, while literally Flash-ier, doesn't have the same appeal of the old one, which had a crisper look.
With regard to the need for "interactive features," I think that the primary concern is having form and function. Too many "interactive features" can actually increase loading time, making the interaction with the website a far less appealing experience.

mas maganda 'yung sa ateneo and sa la salle.
ayos din 'yung sa UP, pero sana, they can make it consistent for all the pages. para kasing hindi sila magkakamukha, unlike 'yung sa ateneo and la salle na organized. sa UST, nakakaantok 'yung lay-out, pero ito ang pinakamadaling i-browse, kasi, simple lang 'yung links.

I think a better way to approach the issue of website adequateness is to ask:
"What features would you like to see on your school website?"
Most local school websites I have seen are attractive and speak well of the capabilities of their designers. However they could do a lot more in terms of usefulness. I think it is safe to say that most local school websites are written primarily as marketing/sales brochures for prospective students. But there are other important uses for a school website, such as:
1) A medium for alumni worldwide to update their records and look up other alumni whom they wish to contact;
2) A place to put class schedules for current students;
3) A place for updates on intercollegiate sports;
4) A means to solicit donations and contributions from alumni, friends, and supporters;
5) A tool to recruit faculty and to inform the community of ongoing research activity.
In terms of these uses for a school website, none of the more popular school websites does an adequate job in my judgment.
Aanhin natin ang bongga kung hindi naman natin napakikinabangan?
I must tip my hat to the PUP site, though. They have webmail. I hope they give every alumnus lifetime free email. That would at least give people a reason to revisit the site once in a while.

More importantly, a school's website in the UK is there to provide the school information in a faster way to those aspiring applicants. In short, it's there to attract applicants rather than for the alumni to constantly visit...
UP's website is okay, but it can still be improved. It would also help if there would be more pictures for visitors to see because surfers from other countries are often interested to see pictures of foreign schools.
My Greek and Italian friends have heard about sunken garden stories... that's why they're very much eager to see how suitable this famous spot in UP Diliman is. :lol:

This is not suitable for a university like UP.
A university website like UP's would need to improve more of its contents related to the academe -- lectures, news about the school per se, faculty, projects, researches, etc. . It need not have a flamboyant layout and a heavy color combination... however, the whole thing would need to be rearranged to make things sequential and hence friendlier to researchers.
Pwede lang yang suggestion mo para sa mga small-populated institutions like Ateneo, UA&P, San Beda, Letran and the like.

1) A medium for alumni worldwide to update their records and look up other alumni whom they wish to contact;
2) A place to put class schedules for current students;
3) A place for updates on intercollegiate sports;
4) A means to solicit donations and contributions from alumni, friends, and supporters;
5) A tool to recruit faculty and to inform the community of ongoing research activity.
In terms of these uses for a school website, none of the more popular school websites does an adequate job in my judgment.
DLSU website
1. check
2. check (mylasalle)
3. check
4. none
5. none

Can you search the alumni database at dlsu.edu.ph? I have some high school classmates who went to college there and I would like to know where they are.
I think the "In Memoriam" list of dlsu.edu.ph is also a good feature. It might not make sense when you are twentysomething, but becomes important as one grows older.

Guys, I wanna know from your opinions who is the better academic site of them all. I do not foster on in any way insinuate school bashing and commitment of harsh and so-so remarks, but rather helping us appreciate the techno world and the advances of schools in technology, especially schools' websites or home portals. So please, before casting your opinions, please be observant of the school sites and their characteristics. We want honest and clean opinions because we will use this for a friend's project in Computer. Please also mention the characteristics that you see in the sites that I will mention below because your descriptions are also important in the information that we can get from you. Thank you fellow PEXers and God Bless. Animo!
Here is the criteria for the evaluation of the sites: [edited due to atenean_blooded's demand, thanks!:)]

b. Recognizability and fast look-up of information

According to what I can see.. and based on your criteria..
DLSU www.dlsu.edu.ph
Comment:
Ok yung site, kaya lang parang naoverload sa info, dagsa kaya parang may pagkaredundant.. pero anyway I can see mas maganda site nyo sa harvard.. ^_^
UST www.ust.edu.ph
Comment:
Ok din yung site namin, kaya lang, most of the webpages ay di connected sa main site sa links kaya mukhang konti lang yung laman.. like yung www.ust.edu.ph/nursing, walang links sa main site, pati yung news, nakasulat karamihan sa site ng varsitarian..
AdMU www.admu.edu.ph
Comment:
Most ng nakalagay ay puro news..
UP www.upd.edu.ph
Comment:
Medyo may pagkascattered yung mga pages, iba iba yung layout, parang magshishift from a dark genre to a light one
Mapua www.mapua.edu.ph
Comment:
Ok din, kaya lang parang suffocating sa masyadong siksikan yung laman.

Aesthetically speaking, I only have two:
1. Ateneo - very simple yet reflects elegance of the university being one of the country's best schools.
2. Mapua - yep! Like gold_inhiniero said, siksikan yung contents if we'll gonna compare it with other schools' sites but then if we'll look at it on another perspective, its in fact advantageous because you'll be able to access easily what you need to access. And that is actually its purpose - for surfers' convenience.

flsfnoeraekadad: I see you also have MyLaSalle...

Does MyLaSalle do the same?

Well, to answer you tophe_17, the answer is yes. DLSU and MIT have their online enrollment systems.
And both these schools have somewhat identical patterns of online accounts for members of their community.
Online grades, Online enrollment, free email account and online classes.
As you can see, Mapua and La Salle have many things to be related to.
They are two of the schools who have peculiar academic calendars, the trimestral and the quartermester systems.
And did your Admins or profs told you that your hero Tomas Mapua was the architect/designer of the LS hall in La Salle?:)
tophe_17
Dec 17, 2005, 06:35 PM
Nope.
You're referring to E.T. YUCHENGCO HALL?
Probabaly architecture students were told about that.
flsfnoeraekadad
Dec 17, 2005, 06:40 PM
Tophe, no. The St. La Salle Hall. The building of La Salle containing only the words DE LA SALLE UNIVERSITY. That's the building Tomas Mapua designed. The building containing St. La Salle and children in sculpture. The building in the front left side of the Campus.
tophe_17
Dec 17, 2005, 06:44 PM
Ok. Well, as I've said, probabaly its the Archi Students that were informed on such design by Tomas Mapua.
