UST professor awarded LSE post-doctoral fellowship
scripts from the Philippine Embassy of London
This year’s holder of the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) Philippine post-doctoral fellowship is Professor Ernesto R. Gonzales, PhD, director of the Social Research Center of the University of Sto. Tomas in Manila.
The Philippine Fellowship is being hosted by LSE’s Asia Research Centre, under an agreement with the Philippine Embassy. He is the second fellow under this program, the first was Dr. Tesa Tadem of UP who did her research at LSE in 2003.
The research project that Dr. Gonzales is working on now is entitled “The Ecological Economics in the Asian Perspective: Integralism in the Critical Natural Capital (CNC) through the CNE (Cultural, Natural, and Economic Capitalization) Model of Philippine Sustainable Development”. He is expected to present his paper before the LSE community in the early part of 2005.
Prof. Gonzales finished his PhD in Applied Cosmic Anthropology (Economics) at the Asian Social Institute in Manila, after doing masteral studies at Cambridge University in England. He is the chairman of the economics committee of the National Research Council of the Philippines, the Philippine chapter president of the Society of Catholic Social Scientists of the United States, and a professorial lecturer at the Graduate School of the University of Sto. Tomas.
In July 2005, he will be chairing the “Economy, Sociology, Ecology of Sustainable Development” session of the 37th World Congress of International Institutes of Sociology in Stockholm, Sweden.

How presumptive naman your comment is, tita. You know naman, tita, it's not a customary practice for a UST alumnus/na to take his/her further studies abroad. Not that I'm belittling UST profs, haah, but many of them are allergic to a US/UK education, pansin ko lang. Sanay silang mag master’s sa UP.

UST trained the international accountants of the SGV and several other big-time businesses, that i'm sure most filipinos don't even know. (legacy in commerce)
Budding writers, who won awards as early as their college years, are also UST-trained. With the best culture of writing and the only school which produced the best harvest of writers such as Eugenia Duran-Apostol, F. Sionil Jose, Bienvenido Lumbera, Alice Colet Villadolid, Ophelia Dimalanta, Cirilo Bautista, Nick Joaquin, Jose Villa Panganiban et cetera (legacy in literature and journalism).
Genuine center of excellence in Philosophy since 1611 (legacy in Philosophy).
A lot of nurses, here and abroad, are UST trained (legacy in nursing).
One of the first and best schools for pharmacy, why, even mercury drug's chief is a thomasian (legacy in pharmacy).
Promising artists from the college of fine arts and design, following top UST faculty members such as the manansala et al, are UST bred. Even cartoonists and a lot of national artists are from UST (legacy in fine arts).
Numerous doctors and scientists (legacy in medicine and science).
The top-performing school in rehabilitation sciences, occupational and physical theraphy (legacy in the rehabilitation sciences).
The great Leandro Locsin and other young architects (legacy in architecture).
The best ecclesiastical faculty. UST produced saints and bishops. (legacy in religion).
Had produced 4 presidents and several chief justices.
If you'll notice, thomasians are gentle and kind people in general. You'll hardly see a similar culture of students in other universities.
Second to the University of the Philippines in government examinations.
Second to the University of the Philippines with regard to the number of centers of excellence.
One of the schools that had produced national heroes.
Ecclesiastical studies, Scientific Tradition and legacy in the humanities--they're all dominated by UST. Underrated man kami at laging nilalagay sa dulo ng listahan, we know that WE MAKE THE BEST!
WE DON'T ACCEPT THE BEST; WE MAKE THEM!

Feb 24, 2005, 08:23 AM
We appreciate and acknowledge other universities' expertise in mba, commerce, economics, business administration and others. Even most politicians come from other schools and this is a reality. But, we are also best in other fields and it really is UNFAIR when other universities edge us out in the roster of the philippines' best universities.
They are the best just because of employment reasons? thomasians are everywhere: in hospitals, schools, government, media institutions, and others. It really infuriates me whenever other people say that thomasians are least prefered over "best mba schools" graduates in the work force. I know they dominate the ownership of big-time businesses, but we also have thomasians in the field of commerce and UST hardly makes public relations regarding all its achievements.
Almost all thomasians are employed, regardless if they are executives in a company or employees. Thomasians also serve as the best teachers in other universities and they can't deny it.
why can't we be one of the best universities? the CHED said so and the PRC as well. Our great alumni have proven themselves in their fields and it's such a rueful reality that all these things that made Santo Tomas the "Catholic University of the Philippines" still make us "4th", underrated.
why are we neglected when they practically talk about business-related courses only?

i used that as a general claim but of course, there could be some exceptions.
i beg to disagree with you. there are top graduates from elite high schools who took their medical, engineering and architecture degrees from UST. besides, people can still change and improve. i cease to be called below average because i know my character and my skills can still lead me somewhere. we know that we have good teachers in UST and a good academic culture. we know how UST brings out the best in its students.
from my experience, i had two valedictorian and 1 salutatorian as classmates--that should prove you wrong. though the rest of us are not, we are in the upper cluster of our high schools which is still good if not the best.
i didn't graduate with honors during my high school, but i am happy with what i have today and i don't have to brag about it.

CLARENCE M. BATAN
a young sociologist, researcher and teacher. His main research interests are sociology of children and youth; education, work and development; information and communication technology; and quantitative and qualitative research methods.
He is a child of a carpenter and an office clerk, and grew-up in the municipality of Binangonan, Rizal. He graduated valedictorian from Binangonan Elementary School and Binangonan Catholic High School with various academic, literary and leadership distinctions.
Inspired by Philippine social realities, from early 1990s to 1999, he became a young social advocate of ecology, youth empowerment, and community organizing manifested in his own founded non-governmental organization, PUNLA : Kabataan sa Kalikasan. This social advocacy motivated him to study Sociology in the Faculty of Arts and Letters, University of Santo Tomas (UST) from 1991 – 1995. While in UST, he received major university awards namely Rector’s Award for Scholastic Excellence, Quezon Award for Exemplary Leadership, and Benavides Award for Civic Achievement. This significant accomplishment conferred him the highest award given to a Thomasian student, the Santo Tomas Aquinas Award, for Exceptionally Outstanding Performance. His leadership endowed the UST Sociological Society the Pope Leo XIII Communitarian Award.
In 1995, Clarence graduated from the University of Santo Tomas with Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, Magna Cum Laude. In the same year, he was named one of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP) presented by President Fidel V. Ramos.
AT PRESENT, he is studying Ph.D. in Sociology at Dalhousie University (Halifax, Nova Scotia) as a Government of Canada Award (GOC) holder. He is working on a dissertation about the structural difficulties and challenges of the processes of ‘growing-up’ in the Philippines.
