For the past years I have long heard about the very famous Lasalle-Ateneo rivalry. It was not until the late years when new rivals came up.

now for you guys out there who do you think is the best rival and the best pals among universities... dont you think thisshould be categorized?

This is jsut such an interesting issue to talk about.. what do you think Ateneans? Upinians? Thomasians? UAPinians or whatever?

SPEAK UP!

i'll just confine this to the uaap rivalry. siguro nga there's the ff:

'd orig ateneo-dlsu
tapos naging ust-dlsu (from 94-96)
naging dlsu-feu
balik ust-dlsu

basta never ending depende nalang siguro who gets to the finals and who stops who in getting to the finals.

sa academics (na naman!) pantay-pantay-pantay-pantay lang. kanya kanyang expertise na lang siguro.

dlsu is for business and computer studies
ateneo- law,... (di ko na alam, pakidagdagan na lang)
up-medicine, law, pol. scie
ust- nursing, medicine, pt, med tech, eng'g, fine arts, architecture, music (mas alam ko kasi taga doon ako)

viva ust, dlsu, ateneo, up
animo dlsu, ust, ateneo, up
one big fight to ateneo, ust, dlsu, up

peace to all!!!!!! :)

yeah, I must say arch here is right, pana-panahon lang talaga ang mga rivalries.
But if you really want to know what's good about rivalries, just read all the arguments people from every univ say just to defend their own alma mater. This is what's good about it: it bring the competition to healthy level where all are trying to be the best that they can be.

PEACE

Regardless of how UP is rated within the country or without, i believe the only Philippine university that comes close to UP's performance and capabilities is UST.

Hail to the real UNIVERSITIES!

I beg to disagree Braveheart, but I'm sure many Isko's and Iska's here in UP will be offended by your claim. Don't compare our acads with UST.

UST: Does the truth hurt?

BIG TIME!

But in fairness, I agree with archangel more. Each university has its own expertise. UST can never claim that theyr'e good in business. Even the other colleges in UST claim that their business programs are really not that good, though Ateneo or De La Salle Manila can not beat you in Medicine. But I think Arch should have included Engineering in DLSU's expertise and Liberal Arts in Ateneo.

Peace to all.

the ust college of commerce is CHED's center of development, and it's eyeing the COE status in a couple of years. FYI.

academics: ust and up talaga. sila lang ang may pinakamaraming centers of excellence (up-16, ust-12) which means na most of the colleges sa kanila eh magagaling talaga. dami pa nilang magagaling na alumni and in various fields ha! unlike that one university na accountants lang ata ang ipinagmamalaki. yung isa naman walang ma-produce na accountants. ;)

the only real rivalry that is worthy of the term is the Ateneo and De La Salle. all other "rivalies" come from other schools trying to make it to the limelight among the national elite (i am generalizing here for the sake of argument). ADMU and DLSU have had a history of rivalry in sports, academics, and reputation. nothing can beat the intensity of the said friction.

as for academics, here are the specialties of the different universities (from what I know)...

ADMU - law, liberal arts, business, philo, theo, pol. sci
DLSU - business, engineeriing, computer studies
UP - law, pol. sci, medicine, music
UST - medicine, fine arts, architecture

CHED's center of development because theyr'e underdeveloped?

Try shouting inside the UST campus most specially in the ex-CAFA and in the College/School/Institute of Science that YOUR Commerce courses are good and bet you'll hear snears and laughs. Center of Excellence? Sure.

And were you pointing at THE Ateneo in the "walang ma-produce na accountants" portion of your message? How could they produce when (I think) they don't even have Accounting Courses?

Can't you realize the FACT that universities have specialties? Has anyone questioned YOUR reputaion in the medical fields or in fine arts? Definitely not Ateneo nor La Salle. But has anyone questioned La Salle's expertise in Business? Not even Ateneo nor UP.

Peace my friend. Tame your too wild brave heart. Its good to follow what your heart tells you but sometimes, you just have to use a part of your brain. Also, try posting at threads outside the Academe. Just a suggestion my friend.

moonwind,

correction, up excells in all fields it enters into. your specialization theory may be true for non-state colleges but you must now ask yourself, why? more courses mean more students meaning more tuition revenues meaning better teaching synergy meaning a better all-around education.

you bare your schools' mediocrity by claiming specialization. and who ever said only up, admu, dlsu have good bus. mgt. programs?

moonwind, there are thousands of philippine universities with business programs and ust is one of the only 4 universities identified by CHED as CoD in business (2 of the 4 got CoE). have you tried working in the makati area? eh nilalampaso lang ng thomasians yung mga schoolmates mo eh.

la salle is to business and the ateneo is to law. that's cool, but nothing beats all-around education.

I think academic wise, all universities and colleges are rivals of each other. May kanya kanyang expertise lang yan in their respective fields of study. Kaya its up to th schools to be one step ahead of the others when it comes to the claim of being the best.

PEACE!!!

In the contrary, La Salle was only awarded by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) with 10 Centers of Excellence in the following areas: English, Filipino, Literature, Math, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Electronics and Communications Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. None of the business courses in the College of Business and Economics in DLSU, namely Applied Economics, Accountancy, Management of Financial Institutions, Business Management, Marketing Management, and Advertising Management, were included.

Now, the reason why many companies and employers prefer La Sallian business graduates over others is because they perform significantly better than graduates of other colleges and universities. They don't check whether the courses of these graduates are Centers of Excellence by the CHED. They look at how well these graduates do their work. And because of their previous good working relationship with former La Sallians, they opt to get La Sallians again because of their good reputation as hard workers. The same goes with graduates of other schools like UP, Ateneo, and UST.

So let's not fight about which schools have the most number of employees in companies. It should be the quality of their work which we should look at.

Peace to all!

Not again...tsk tsk tsk....I'm tired of threads like this.

By the way Braveheart, you seem to be so focused on one particular functional area of Management. So what if the other school (I do not know which school you're pertaining to) is not able to produce accountants? Modern day management and business trends dictate that people should be more flexible. Lines that used to delineate one functional area from the other are increasingly becoming blurred. This only means that specialized business courses are becoming obsolete. Business firms prefer managers who can practice and efficiently supervise different areas. Flexibility, not specilization is the trend.
Peace!

I agree. Most of the top management in our consulting firm right now were former software developers or engineers.

In my case, there is a lot of gray area with management and IT since most of the IT projects are process oriented. That is why a lot of engineers are trying to get an MBA.

Again, companies hire college grads based on their previous experiences with them or with some other criteria and not just because they have a CS or an accounting degree.
