- Do some research on the NGO that you're going to work for, so you know what you're getting into. Talk to people in the organization and those from other NGOs, so you have both an insider's view and an idea of how your NGO is regarded by others in its field.
- If you're going to be working as a project-based employee, check on the funding situation of the project and possibilities for additional phases or renewals of funding.
- Be prepared to be paid an NGO salary. It really depends on the NGO. If you compare the pay with those in the for-profit sector, a lot of organizations offer low salaries. A lot of organizations also offer relatively average salaries. And there are a few that do pay quite well.
- It can be quite stressful. You might spend considerable amount s of time away from family and friends in places less developed than what you're accustomed to. You will have to deal with a wide range of people with very different personalities and points of view. Some of these people will not understand or will not like what you or your NGO is trying to do.
- However, it can also be very rewarding. Not in the monetary sense, but in more meaningful ways. You will get to go to places of exceptional beauty rarely visited by people. You will be able to interact with many interesting people from whom you will learn a lot. You will be responsible for some very important things: changing people's perceptions about their place in this world, improving the lives of communities, and most important of all, insuring the survival of future generations through the conservation of our biodiversity and natural resources.
Good Luck!
P.S. I work for WWF, and I don't think we're looking to fill up any new positions right now. But you can try your luck. E-mail apply@wwf.org.ph

I have a friend who works at the Children's Hour. I think there is a job opening there. PM me if you need contact person. As for the work... she said its very fulfilling. This from a girl who's worked at P&G and Metrobank. Even if she's not getting her salary market value, she's happy with what she's doing.

After working in private corporations for many years, I still want to work in an NGO. I believe that success shouldn’t be measured in terms of the number of cars one has parked in his garage, or the amount of money one has stashed in his bank account. Success should be measured by the number of lives one has touched and helped change for the better.
And especially now that we cannot expect anything good from our government, civil society should play an active role. Good people, those who refuse apathy to overpower them should help the country in redeeming itself. I'm looking forward in joining a worthy NGO next year.

Just curious, how much do research assistants in NGOs normally receive? Is 11K considered an average salary for RAs?

ajoerooo: like i've said... part-timers are always welcome at children's hour. plus they are hiring full-time too. give it a try.
you can also try abs-cbn foundation, sm foundation, ayala foundation, yuchengco foundation, wwf, world vision, care, unicef.

abs-cbn foundation has opening. They were (maybe still are) looking for Project Managers.
Some tips:
1.) make sure this is the one for you. I know a few people who like helping out people and thought full-time NGO work is for them and ended up leaving after a few months. I suggest that you try it out for a few months first as a regular volunteer then eventually ask that particular organization if they want to absorb you in their system. it's very important for you to know if this is really for you.
2.) in situations like this, it's very possible that you get really attached to the people you'll be dealing with. try to save something for yourself (it may sound selfish but it's the way to go).
wish you all the best lilac_one!

wow, many thanks indeed, leigh & jensie for the infos!!!
i dont know if i still ever need to further sorta cross-examine myself, but i really want to do this, i mean i always want to think that im versatile, u know, pwede sa lahat, kaibigan ng lahat thingy. iknow myself more than anybody else. inspite some of my inequalities or deficiencies, i know im okay!! but hei, i still have to further understand asto what particular qualities of a researcher or volunteer are they looking for?
1 patience? i have it, i could even claim im the most patient person in this planet.
2 objective? i speak whats on my mind but i always make sure it doesnt go beyond the bounds of persons feelings that would make him hurt. & im not judgmental
3 confrontational/frank? i am, absolutely, & sometimes that would cause me & my mom a big fight, but evrythin is under control so dont worry
4 hardwork/smartwork- whatever u call that, i have them all, at hindi ako sipsip. its just that during my call center stint, we were trained to practice western work ethic. u know, separating personal from business, & focus only on ur work
5 what else? responsible? yes
6 disciplined- yes, in general
7 mature- yes,
8 willing to take risks- yes or at least depends on how circumstances dictate
ms jensie, ok ba tong mga qualities na to, im not glorifying myself, ok, thats a fallacy. excited lang kasi ako, pls help

ajoeroooo: i am a mister. :D
yup okay naman yang mga qualities mo.
pero most importantly, you have to LOVE (in the strictest sense of the word) what you will be doing in an NGO. that's what matters the most in this type of work. you will be dedicating not only your knowledge, but also a very significant chunk of your time.
goodluck!

ajoeroooo: Maybe more than anything, you need to have a certain passion, a special interest for what the NGO you would be working for is advocating. In my opinion, this is crucial in joining an NGO.
Thanks, JENSIE_G. :)

I think these organizations require higher credentials like a masteral degree and some connection to get in. It would be easier if you are already adept and had worked with international organizations.

I’m actually interested in joining an NGO that is into political advocacy, but one that is not known as being leftist. Does anyone have an idea on how to join and a job opportunity with this NGO?

hanggang ngayon ba may openings? pwede bang part time? ano exactly ang ginagawa dun if you volunteer? Hey there. I'm one of the volunteers for Children's Hour (part-time, not salaried), but more or less cina-career ko to :D Definitely we need all the help we can get.
I have a number of projects in mind already which I'd like to really take off.
For starters, more media awareness, and of course, to be able to raise more funds. We don't actually do any hands on, direct to community work, though, if that's what you're looking for.
A brief description:
Children’s Hour is a non-stock, non-profit funding organization that helps other NGOs that cater to children.
Children’s Hour is Philippine Council for NGO Certification accredited, registered with the SEC, and a member of the International Youth Foundation.
Children’s Hour gives grants to other non-government organizations that help children.
These organizations help improve the lives of children, in the areas of education, shelter, rehabilitation, health, nutrition and medical services.
Children’s Hour has already given grants worth Php 57.8 million.
Most importantly, Children’s Hour has already funded over 90 organizations and has helped over 155,893 children.
What You Can Do
There are already a number of systems in place by which we raise funds. If you can help us spread the word about the ff, that would be great!
1. Credit Cards - Credit Cards: AIG, BPI
2. Salary Deduction - tell me if you'd like us to present to your company / office. We can also tell you about the benefits of donating to charitable institutions and all the corresponding tax implications. Of course we will issue your company a receipt as proof of donation come tax time.
3. G-CASH (For Globe and Touch Mobile Subscribers)
To donate, text: DONATE>space<amount>space<MPIN>
Send to 28829178025419
For donors outside the Philippines, donations may be sent to G-CASH’s partner merchants.
For more information, visit www.globe.com.ph
4. Bank Remittance:
Children’s Hour Peso Account (Bank of the Phil Islands)
Account Number: 2591-0024-84
–Ayala Triangle Branch
Donations will be (BIR) tax exempted.
We're pretty much undermanned so there's a ton of work going around. Please bear with me if I can't back to you as soon as I'd like. I'll ask KD and Ada if I can open more threads here in PEx related to Children's Hour. Maybe even a stickie.
For all those interested, please send me an email at vicmanlapaz@yahoo.com and at vic@childrenshour.org.ph (sometimes this one is slow though - so send to both email adds to be sure. )
Simple things you can do to help - 1) Spread the word! if you requent bulletin boards, use signatures. (although I haven't figured out how to do this in PEx..) Put something like "Children's Hour - Every Hour is Time Well Spent.. http://www.childrenshour.org.ph" or something like that.
2. You can also put this signature file in all your outgoing emails.
3. I'm also getting a few quotes for bumper stickers. The best I've seen so far is P9/pc for 1000 pcs. This is a 3.5" x 3.5" square sticker logo of the Children's Hour which you can stick on your car (not as prestigious of the Apple logo sticker, but hey..! We have a good-looking logo ourselves :D )
It looks like this:
http://www.geocities.com/vicmanlapaz/childrenshour/chlogo_small.txt
Of course P9 x 1,000 will cost us P9,000.. If you know of anyone who would like to donate either the stickers themselves or if you'd like to help raise P9,000 for these, hahaha, please let me know! (I also have quotations for t-shirts, caps.. if you want to help out with those too ;) )
Many more things to get done.. Anyone can drop me a line if you're interested.
THANKS!
