Fr. Maramba is a Benedictine monk of the Abbey of Our Lady of Montserrat in Manila, and director of the Paul VI Institute of Liturgy in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon. He is also a faculty member at the UST Conservatory of Music, St. Scholastica’s College, and Sta. Isabel College where he teachers Theory, Composition and Piano.

The UST GUITAR ENSEMBLE is one of the many performing groups of the University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music. Considered the foremost guitar ensemble in the country today; part of its objective is to promote appreciation for music and encourage students to discover and hone their musical talents. The UST Guitar Ensemble was founded by Prof. Ruben Reyes in 1996. It is an offshoot of his guitar ensemble class at the Conservatory and includes some of his best students. The Ensemble has performed in major concert venues in Manila, which include the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the Francisco Santiago Hall of PCI Bank, Paco Park, and Instituto Cervantes. Its repertoire spans a wide range of selections, from Renaissance to contemporary music in settings from two to fourteen guitars.

RACHELLE GERODIAS earned her Bachelor of Music degree in Voice from the UST Conservatory of Music, and went on to receive a Professional Diploma in Opera from the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts on full scholarship. She was also a scholar at the Eastman School of Music where she got a Master’s Degree in Voice Performance and Literature with a Performer’s Certificate, managing to win several competitions. She has sung full opera roles in the US, Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Her most recent appearances in Singapore as Micaela in Bizet’s Carmen, and Kathy in Romberg’s The Student Prince were to great critical acclaim. She has been soloist with many orchestras including the Philippine Philharmonic, the Manila Philharmonic, the San Miguel Philharmonic, and the Bangkok Symphony. Last year Aliq Awards named her the Best Female Classical Artist of 2003. She currently teaches at the UST Conservatory of Music.

I've a question then. Is there anyone acknowledged to be any of the following and where are they based:

1. The country's best classical composer
2. The country's best symphony conductor
3. The country's best pianist
4. The country's best violinist
----
We of course know the philippines has only one full symphony orchestra (Japan has nine).

I believe that UP is the best but UST is not far behind. Most PHSA alumni go to UP. Most NAMCYA people I know go to the College of Music din. The choirs of UP are the best, including the Philippine Madrigal Singers. The culture of music and concerts in the campuses is very strong. Of the 10 National Artists for Music, 8 of them were involved with UP with the exception of Cuenco and Kasilag. School bashing nanaman e.

UST at UP lang ang may Center/s of Excellence in Music, ibig sabihin, proven na na magaling ang field na to, magaling ang graduates at proffessors, maganda ang curriculum. Commission on Higher Education ang nagpaparangal nito.

i think pwede kang mag minor ng piano pag guitar major ka, ive got many friends sa UP music. sa UST ****, pag guitar major ka, automatic piano ang minor mo, unless double major or minor ka, pwede kang pumili ng iba, pero di pwedeng maalis ang piano. (logical **** kasi, music stud ka, u should at least be good in playing one of the very basic instruments w/c is the piano.)

yes, true, mas maraming national artist ang from UP.

di naman nangba-bash si thomas, did he say anything against UP music? posting articles is just a way of showing facts, pag mga taga UP ang nagpo-post ng ganito, di naman ata kami nagrereklamo. in fact dapat pa nga maging proud kayo kasi laging pinas at pinoy ang nagcha-champion sa mga international chorale competitions, (UST singers ang dahilan) most of them are of course, from the conservatory, pero marami ring taga ibang colleges. (in the conservatory alone, dalawa na agad ang vocal ensebles (koro tomasino and liturgikon) at madalas din manalo sa chorale contests internationally) sana wag niyo pag-awayin ang dalawa, maraming magakkakilala at magkakaibigang profs at sudents from both institutions. i know frnds who transeferred from UP to UST and vice versa.. wag niyo kami itulad sa ibang kurso.

some differences:

mas mura sa UP keysa sa UST.

UST's curriculum has a lot more subects than UP's.

UP has wider programs because they also offer courses in ballet, dance. etc.

the UP college of music doesnt accept students who cannot read notes (basic), while UST's conservatory does. kailangan may background ka na sa music para matanggap sa UP (except for the extension programs w/c are for people who only enroll fo rvoice lessons, etc.) pero sa UST, tumatanggap sila kahit wala ka pang musical bakcground.

UST conservatory is the only music school in the nation that has a complete all-student symphony orhcestra and an all-student symphony band.

Voice major s'ya so malamang kumanta.

hmmm.... did she leave UST before entering showbiz or did she leave nung nasa showbiz na siya kasi di ba bawal sa UST yung mga students na may ganung image(?) like yung nangyari kay Alma concepcion?

Nandiyan ang Madrigal singers, UPSA, UPCC, and even la salle and admu chorales. By the way, the Madrigal Singers and UP Concert CHorus are of course handled by the College of Music but these choral groups are not exclusive to Music Students. UPSA is not under the College of Music and its members are also from different colleges.

she left UST kasi nag-showbiz siya. i can't remember kung siya ba 'yung bold star from UST na nagalit 'yung mga dominican priests (may nabasa ako sa diyaryo years ago, hindi ko lang maalala kung siya 'yun), kasi parang this starlet openly used and identified herself with the name of UST among the press people when she was just starting sa showbiz. she didn't even last a semester in UST, tapos she claims na she graduated or something.

I know her case, i just don't know what UST did to her after what happened.

Yep. Magaling 'yung Madrigal singers. May UP Ambassadors (???) di ba? Singers din ba 'yun? I've heard of that term from a UPian.

kung guitar or violin, syempre dapat dala mo instrument mo, except pag piano..

goodluck sayo.

salamat ng marami.

any info on the extension programs(short term) for both school for the guitar? is it just classical or does it cover every aspect?

also, ok po ba sa PWU at Scho? anyone who studies there?

saan po ba ang Center For Pop Music Philippines ? also, what courses do they offer?

pag extension, 4500 for 10 sensions, one hr per session, once a week. pag 20 sessions, 8,000. pwede nyo ata pagusapan ng prof kng ano gusto mo matutunan e.. sulit sya, pramis.

I think only 3 schools int the Philippines have a consevatory of Music. UST, UP, PWU. I just don't know if PWU offers music courses. I also don't know if St. Scho has a conservatory of music.

University of Santo Tomas
Conservatory of Music

As one of the two Centers of Excellence in music, the UST Conservatory of Music has strived to be a premiere music school. It is the only music school in the Philippines which has an all-student symphony orchestra and an all-student symphonic band. The Conservatory of Music has two choral groups exclusively of its students - The Coro Tomasino and the Liturgikon Vocal Ensemble (which has been specializing in sacred music performances). It also has a Millennium Woodwind Quintet, a Thomasian Brass Quintet and various smaller groups which can be called on as the need arises. Recently, it has organized a Rondalla which has already performed at least twice at the Concert at the Park at the Luneta and once at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). The UST guitar ensemble has also performed in the different venues including the CCP. These are just some of the achievements of the college.

The Coservatory of Music is very proud to say that they are able to graduate 25 or more students annually with diverse majors.

i think onti lang ang diffrences sa UP..

nagtuturo ka pala, zacharaiolsen. anyway, if there are any music instruments i'm dying to learn, those are the piano and the guitar. my mother even bought me a guitar and a piano, years ago, so that we (the kids) would have this interest in music. my mom plays the guitar well, she wanted us to be like her because music had helped her to forget her worries of not being able to pay her tuition fees when she was studying here in Manila.

i took piano lessons before, i sucked big time. while playing the piano, it feels like i'm playing the piano with my feet.
