Sabagay, palagay lang naman.
Pero for me, I'd have to say that AdMU still has the best LM program: With two AdMU LM graduates in the 2003 Bar Exam Top 10, namely Atty. Harvey Lawrence Dychiao (2nd place) and Atty. Dorothy Dizon (6th place).
But teka nga - before anything, what do we mean by the best? What are the objective criteria that we should use to say which school is best? Alumni ba? Or mean post-graduation salaries? Or profile of the employers of the graduates? Mahilig tayo magsabi ng best ako best si ganyan, but we can't even define the variables that we use to make the equation stand!
Why not do it this way....
If f is the overall performance of a school in a given field, then we define it as a function of several variables, x1, x2, x3,..,xn. Such that f(x1,x2,x3,...,xn)...ayan at least meron function, kahit general lang.
Sige let us all define the variables. What is x1? x2? x3...xn?
Mas okay yung ganyan para objective!

I don't get this. When you said you respected his opinion, it was clearly lip service and was obviously meant as something on which to build up your true intention of questioning the said opinion. Well that fact was obvious (and don't even deny it), but my question is, why? Do you really need thumbs-up assurances everyday from people in PEx that your school is up there on top?
I'm sorry, but it really looks like you're a bit insecure. People who are confident with their own abilities as well as their schools' will just go about their business not caring about what others might say. They don't go about fishing for opinions and questioning those who said something not quite what they want to hear. Especially not in a case such as this when the opinion was voiced out in an orderly manner, even going at great lengths to humbly admit that it was subjective. And that is exactly the thing. The opinion is by no means formal, nor is it official, and is admittedly subjective. It has no bearing. It is insignificant, and has no effect whatsoever on the greater picture of the Philippine Academic scene. It has no effect, whether it be swayed or not. So what do you plan to achieve in forcing new thoughts onto him? That is a bit unethical, in my opinion.
Anyway, different folks, different strokes, different lines of thought. As for me, I'm just thinking aloud.
And to all the other pride-ridden Ateneans, Lassalites, Thomasians, Iskolars-ng-bayan, and every student and alumnus and alumna who treat PEx as a proving ground for some unknown-but-apparently-substantial thing, I have the same question: Knowing that all this is so insignificant, why bother with the effort of fishing, debating, and battling wits? Is there a prize for the winner? Is there fulfillment after validation?
And why do I even bother with a long post if it will just be refuted by the stupidest one-liner? Oh well, just have a good one, folks. Remember, life is too short to be spent in front of a computer. Have a nice day.

but the bottomline is, i was just asking him why he thinks so. i never said he was wrong.
also, i was only particular of the field and NOT the school. again, i NEVER said that UST is the best and even admitted in the other thread that UP is the best in general. i just wanted to ask why he thinks that UST Philosophy is not ONE of the best philosophy schools IN his opinion, that i said, i respect.
his reason included that the Ateneo is the only institution that has a Ph.D. program in philosophy, which i questioned:

This doesn't mean anything. I go to a university in Australia that is not that popular but excels in engineering and computer sciences. To be able to teach you must have or at least be doing a PhD. My lecturers gained their masters and PhDs in universities in Australia, US, China, Japan, Singapore, UK, Canada and Europe. We've had visiting professors from many prestigious universities worldwide and lecturers having PhDs from all over the world. In fact, the head of our department graduated with first class honours and has a PhD from the University of London, was part of the JPEG2000 committee (he was part of the technical group who developed the standards) and was part of a 3-man team who actually designed the camera of a Motorola phone. Still, our university is not considered a part of the top 3 of Australia. It's funny to see someone boasting of PhD lecturers from a university of a top 3 school. You should have at least 80% of your faculty members with PhDs like we do.

You need to understand that the things you hear in pep talks and freshmen orientation programs are exactly what they are -- pep talk. If you go outside of your own department and school, you need to take more care about the things you say, especially if it is highly based on opinion and whose truth is difficult to substantially prove to the point of fact.
Your post caught my attention since it is somewhat identical to what the common blurb was in UP EEE at my time: ECE is a difficult course, in an elite university. We were no less than the cream of the cream. I'm sure other departments and schools have their own taglines. Heartwarming and confidence-building, yes. To be used in serious discussion involving alumni from different schools, no. Why not? Because it lowers your credibility.

hmm, i really don't have any background on the curiculum and major thrusts of UST with its Philosophy Department although I know that you have one of the oldest. I hear Philo of UST is the same with Ateneo that leans to Scholastic philosophy? Im not sure. :) UP has a strong backing from the faculty on Logical Positivism. in any case, mukhang nde na mgkaka PhD program ang UP sa philo.. :(

a philosophy prof of mine once told me that UST has the "thomistic" philosophy. Ateneo has scholastic. Tapos, UP has Logical Positivism. I forgot 'yung sa La Salle. Well, hindi naman ako philosopher. I just have 12 units of philosophy, just enough to be sensible as a rational animal but not enough to be a philosopher. :)

oh. :) well, i have 18 units, sinagad ko sa mga electives ko. Ive had the core philo subjects and yun ang naririnig ko. Thanks for informing me of the "thomistic" philosophy. itatanong ko na din if ust law studes have uniforms. thanks! :D

yes, UST law studes have uniforms. it started last year lang 'ata. magtatry ka ba sa UST law?
ow well. akala ko ligtas na ako sa uniforms (kasi, i might attend UST again next year for law). imagine, i've been studying in catholic schools since elementary (hindi naman ako bumait hehe :D). i've never tried going to class with a casual attire. ayus din siguro, at least tipid sa damit. :)

actually, i first got the idea from other pexers here. knowing that some of them could just be bashers, i never bought the claim until i've proven the notion myself.
siguro nasa denial stage ka pa lang. dont worry, the end of the tunnel is close.

Are there other schools which offer Microbiology as a course other from UST? If there are none, then why is it included in the list of academic programs subject to comparison if there's nothing to compare it with in the first place?

is this a joke?
i think, unfair kung lahat ng courses lalagyan niyo kasi in the first place, hindi niyo naman lahat tinake yan di ba so pano kayo magiging reasonable sa mga choices niyo di ba?
para sa akin, ito lang
electronics and communications engineering: upd... walang ya, tinotorture kami dito... biruin mo, last year, more than 100 out of around 300 yung bumagsak sa una naming major, freshie pa lang kami nun... tas this sem, yung 2nd major namin, siguro may 50+ na older batch, yung iba siguro nagshift na... btw, kmai nga pala yung course na highest ang mortality rate sa up... as of now, im still waiting for my grade... sana pasado ako, otherwise, bye bye eee... :~(

Yes, same goes for schools. How can you say that your school is better than another school if you didn't even attend the other school? Unless you were a cross-registrant, your opinions will always be biased. That is the reason why we should treat most postings here as opinion rather than fact, unless backed by published information or articles by relevant authorities.

cccc: Haha ganyan talaga dyan sa EEE. Basta gawin nyo lang ang makakaya nyo. And study in such a way that there would be no room for regret. :) And last but not least, no matter how hard the subjects are, and no matter what they say, there is always room for some Starcraft. Oops. :D

cccc: bakit naman bye bye EEE agad? anong subject ba yung hinihintay mo?
xxtoyxx
Oct 20, 2004, 04:41 PM
"Mediocre" student ako according to me. Hehe.
Pero start pa lang yan, sorry. Watch out for EEE 51, sabi nung isa kong orgmate dati about that subject, ito daw and susukat kung talagang dito ka or hindi. Worked well for me kung me ka-age ka na nag-eexplain sa iyo. :)
Good luck sa iyo. Rough waters are present to test you. Don't give up.
rave: UP EEE courses are still difficult . :)
:) I can't speak about other school, pero kung sa ECE rin lang, I know UP ang the best.

nursing, archi, fine arts, law (how can they miss this one out?), pharmacy, PT, medicine, med tech, tourism, journalism, a lot of science courses (microbio, botany, etc.), and super dami pa.

are you nuts?
how would you fit all those programmes in such a small campus like la salle-taft?
or you're expecting La Salle-dasma's med to compete against La salle-taft's or something like that?

This is the new name for EE 121. During my time, this was easy, at least compared to its prerequisite, EEE 41 (EE 25). You know, the one that kicks off the semester with quantum mechanics.

true. ang daming batch ang natapyas "further" dahil sa EEE41 (the first "batch reduction" happens after ee18/ee14 ha ha)
good luck to the ECE examinees!
