can you help me w/ the following sentences? I'm quite confuesd kc eh, kung puwede paki
lagyan ng explanation. thanx in advance for your help!
easy ones:
1.Does anyone (has, have) HQs from the Sanremo Fashion show?
*has ba? anyone kc eh"
2.you have a hair that(move, moves) naturally
moves b? hair kc is regraded as one.
3.how many dogs does she (have, has)?
has b?
5. I have already waited too long and all my hope (is, are) gone
4.So, Who (HASNT, HAVEN'T) MET GERI?
difficult ones:
a. while many studies claim that vitamins and herbs can improve health, there
(is, are) alot of controversy about their safety.
ang sagot ko ay "are" pero ang tamang sagot ay "is" bakit kaya?
b. some research (suggest, suggests) that vitamin c may help prevent cancer.
ang sagot ko ay "suggest" because of the word "some" pero ang tama ay "suggests"
c. there (are, is) alot of evidence that vitamin rich foods are beneficial
ang sagot ko ay "are" pero ang tama ay "is"

Easy:
1. i believe it's "have", kasi pag anyone ang ginamit, it means that you're talking to a group di ba? (sana tama explanation ko) :D
2. you're right, it should be "moves". it is regarded as one.
3. "have". the subject is dogs, and it's plural.
4. i believe it's "is".
5. "hasn't" is my answer, pero i think both are acceptable.
difficult:
a. "is", kasi it should agree with "controversy", and singular yung ginamit, hindi "controversies".
b. "suggests", kasi research is singular.
c. "is", like (a), "evidence" is singular.
hope you understand my explanations. hirap explain eh...
somebody correct me if I'm wrong... :D

1. pronouns anyone, everyone, everybody, someone are always singular.
DOES for singular subjects, DO for plural subjects.
DOES anyone have...?
DO filipinos care....?
note the difference.
interrogative: how many dogs DOES she have....?
declarative: she has many dogs.
3. how many dogs does she have?
the subject is she, and not dogs.
5. has for singular subjects, have for plural subjects.
he has, she has...
they have, we have...
4. who, all, some, and few can either be singular or plural depending on what they're referring to.
e.g.
the FILIPINOS who care...
the FILIPINO who cares...
who hasn't met gerrie? who are the participants?
all these are...
all this is....
some of the pie was eaten. [ pie is singular, therefore requires singular verb]
some of the people were killed. [people is plural, therefore requires plural verb.]
addendum:
1. plum and observer ARE pexers.
2. either plum or observer IS a pexer.
3. neither/either the parents nor/or child IS
4. neither/either the parents nor/or the children ARE
5. half of the population IS
6. half of the people ARE

paano, pag na rephrase ang sentence na "how many dogs does she have" sa "she (has, have ) 3 dogs" ang sagot ay "has?"
plum_sun20
Sep 26, 2004, 10:21 AM
3. how many dogs does she have?
the subject is she, and not dogs.
thank you so much! but 1 question, hindi ba dapat ang subject dito ay dogs? ang sabi kc sa akin ay, para malaman ko kung ano yung subject, kailangan kong ma identify kung ano or sino ang pinag-uusapan sa sentence.... kaya ang answer ay naging "have" dahil ang subject ay "dogs" "quite confused"

so ibig mong sabihin ang tamang sentence eh "the name of the monkey is neptune?" kasi ang subject eh "the name" which is singular so dapat "is", 'di ba?
so tama nga 'yung sentence na: "the name of the monkey is neptune."

how many dogs does she have?
she has many dogs.
the subject is she.
paano, pag na rephrase ang sentence na "how many dogs does she have" sa "she (has, have ) 3 dogs" ang sagot ay "has?"
HAS because she is singular.
compare:
how many dogs do they have?
they HAVE many dogs.
HAVE because they is plural.
get it?

right: anyone know the answer?
wrong: anyone knows the answer?

in grammar, this is called economy of words where, in certain cases, wh-question words are omitted. for the above examples "anyone know the answer?" and "sound familiar?", the question auxiliary "does" is no longer included. compare "does anyone know the answer?" and "does it sound familiar?" (whenever there is "does", the verb remains in its base form, i.e., sans conjugation). if you answer these types of questions, the subject-verb agreement should be respected: "yes, someone knows the answer" and "yes, it sounds familiar." :)

wait....
so, sa sentence na how many dogs does she have? ang subject ay "she"?
hindi ba dapat ang subject ay "dogs"? kaya nga ang answer ay "have" diba?
ano/sino ba pinag uusapan diba "dogs"?
sa sentence na , she has many dogs. ang subject ay "she" dahil sino ba ang pinag uusapan? diba "she?" kaya ang sagot ay "has"

kaya "she have" kasi nga may "does" 'yung tanong, at kung may "does," 'yung verb dapat nasa base form. ang base form ng "has" ay "have" parang base form ng "eats" eh "eat." halimbawa, "does she eat?" HINDI "does she eats?" gaya rin 'yan sa "did" na kapag may "did" ang question (o statement) ay base form din ang gagamitin na verb, halimbawa, "did neptune go (NOT went) to pluto?" also study passive and active voices, diyan mo maiintindihan 'yung pinag-uusapan at focus ng sentence. :)

tama 'yung slogan ng dunkin' donuts. kasi ang complete nun eh "it sounds good," omitting the subject "it" which is 3rd person singular, and it's not a question but a statement. if it were a question, it should have been "(does it) sound good?" check mo, 'di ba may "does" uli sa tanong kaya 'yung verb na "sound" eh nasa base form, kaya hindi "sounds." :)

hindi ba mas madali kung tatanungin mo yung sarili mo kung ano o sino ang pinaguusapan para malaman mo kung ano ang subject?
ex. The pears on that old tree are not edible.
subject: pears (it answers the question "ano ang pinag uusapan?")
about dun sa slogan ng dunkin.... bakit wala yung word na "it"? "sounds good lang?" I remember kc we keep joking about it....

anong tama **?:
None of you (claims, claim) responsibility for this incident?
intensity1214
Sep 28, 2004, 10:06 AM
given na 'yung pinag-uusapan ay subject, kaya nga subject ang tawag dun.
tungkol dun sa dunkin' donuts, omission of words 'yun o minsan economy of words which is very common in english. siguro style ng dunkin' d ad 'yun. :)

parehong tama. pero kung may plural word sa expression na "of the", halimbawa, "none of the planets (plural noun)" dapat 'yung verb mo eh in plural form. example, "none of the planets are turning up." :)

3.how many dogs does she (have, has)?
has b?
-HAS.. kasi ganto yan.. *she has ten dogs.. diba?*
5. I have already waited too long and all my hope (is, are) gone
-IS.. kasi ALL can be used as singular or a plural.. since HOPE ang word na sumunod sa all, den it should be plural..

HASN'T! nuff said..

paki-reitirate nga yung difference ng HAVE/HAS/HAD para sa mga taga La salle- MFI graduates. thanks
roxyd3428
Oct 5, 2004, 10:32 AM
difference ng HAVE/HAS/HAD
they can both be main verb
(have you no shame? )
or a helping or auxiliary verb
(have you had flu shots?) where they can be used with another verb in a sentence
has and had can change forms to agree with the number of the subject
she has had surgery
they have had surgery.
i have had enough.

easy ones:
1.Does anyone (has, have) HQs from the Sanremo Fashion show?
---> have ang sagot jan..i forgot why though
2.you have a hair that(move, moves) naturally
moves b?
----> moves kasi collective noun nga ang hair, therefore, singular ang verb
3.how many dogs does she (have, has)?
-----> have din
5. I have already waited too long and all my hope (is, are) gone
-----> is
4.So, Who (HASNT, HAVEN'T) MET GERI?
-----> hasn't
difficult ones:
a. while many studies claim that vitamins and herbs can improve health, there
(is, are) alot of controversy about their safety.
----> is, kasi ang subject jan ay "controversy"
b. some research (suggest, suggests) that vitamin c may help prevent cancer.
----> suggests, kasi "research" is singular... kahit na meron syang nagdedefine sa kanya na "some", singular pa rin yan.
c. there (are, is) alot of evidence that vitamin rich foods are beneficial
---> is, subject jan ang "evidence". same explanation as "research".

Oh my goodness, those are simple sentences with obvious answers. My seven year old nephew could answer that correctly. I was expecting sentences with "perfect" tenses (past-perfect,present perfect, etc) and other more complicated sentence structures. Seriously, anyone who does not know the answer to those questions (and claims to be in college) should go back to primary school because those are grade 3 problems.
