FYI: Nap Gutierez has something 2 do with Air Phils. He's 1 of those who's trying to push Air Phils. mgt. to get d' team PCU dolphins. Well, 4 some reason or another they lose d' deal.

After dat, Nap still hope-for-hopes to get PCU's key/top players (like Espinas, Castro, Retaga, Garrido & SANZ)
-so he's trying 2 win d' like of Sanz & others to sign contract with Air Phils...(no more, no less)

i watched he champions league last week and i was seated behind the PCU bench.. here's what i observed: some avid PCU followers (parents/friends or whatever they are) are like cursing their interim coach (or coached kasi dala-dalawa ang nagcocoach sa kanila eh!).. after the game, i saw one old lady shouting "Palitan niyo na yang coach niyo!!!" then another guy was shouting at "rodman" (i believe he is one of the ballboys) to tell their coach "sabihin mo sa coach niyo palitan si ganito ay ipasok si ganito!" and in another instance telling rodman to ask the referee to explain why sanz was called for an offensive foul. eto namang si rodman sunod ng sunod! naasar ako kasi ba't niya papakinggan mga tao sa likod kung di naman talaga kasali di ba? tapos kada bangga kay gabby, sisigaw na lang ng "sige sapakin mo!!" i though this guy has a big influence sa PCU.. when i asked him why coach ato resigned, he simply smiled back at me sabay turo sa tabi niya at sabi "eto ang susunod na coach ng PCU" (he was referring to jospeh roque). when i asked my cousin (who also plays for PCU) after the game, tahimik lang din sya.

if i were to base my judgement on my observations, maybe coach ato didn't really like the environment surrounding him at PCU.. instead of cheering or supporting you, you'd hear a lot of negative things. what hurts more is that it comes from your own backyard...

i've heard that news na din sa pinsan ko.. he was already about to transfer last year kaya lang he decided to stay there sa dolphins camp kasi nga daw bago coach at baka magbago naman daw ang ihip ng hangin.. so we respected his decision.. well i could say he won and he lost. won because they were the champs last year. lost because parang lumala pa yata ang management ng PCU.. we'll try again to convince him to transfer now habang maaga pa.

If that's the case then, just like what I have said in my post in the other thread is that Ato should have picked to coach PCU as compared to UM and RTU. It is because that in the NCAA, exposure is infinite due to the media coverage provided by ABS-CBN. Next, the competition in the NCAA is tougher compared to the leagues where UM and RTU participates every year.

Di ba siya nakipag-bargain sa PCU management regarding that he will give up his coaching positions in UM and RTU to be a full-time coach in PCU. I believe that PCU's dreams of getting a back-to-back looks a lot cloudy at this point. I think that there's something "fishy" that happened along the way. The resignation happened so fast and there are no preceding incidents that happened prior to the resignation of Ato. This is a big mistake for PCU basketball.

LAST season was indeed a remarkable campaign for Philippine Christian University as
it bagged its first ever NCAA men’s basketball title.

Actually, nobody thought that the Dolphins would be contending for the
coveted championship crown, much more win it following a disappointing
campaign the year before where they finished dead last among eight
competing teams.

This time it’s different.

As the 81st NCAA men’s basketball tournament begins June 25 at the Araneta Coliseum,
all eyes are on the defending champion PCU, which hopes to have another magical
campaign under the tutelage of multi-titled mentor Junel Baculi.

“It’s going to be tough because almost everybody are expecting us to repeat as
champion. But other teams will try to beat us and take away the title from us,” said
Baculi, a former Mapua Cardinal who has won several championships in the PBL.

Baculi was tapped to replace champion coach Ato Tolentino, who steered PCU to its
first ever title since joining the oldest collegiate league in the country in 1998
after resigning from his post during the off-season.

The nucleus of last year’s champion team, led by Gabriel Espinas, the first ever
player to win both the Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year awards, will
banner the Dolphins’ back-to-back championship bid.

With an intact line-up, Baculi knows the Taft-based dribblers have a big chance of
contending anew for the ultimate trophy.

“That’s the good part about this team as it guns for a second straight title, halos
walang nawala. Meron mang nawala at nadagdag, ang importante buo ang core ng team.
Saka gutom na manalo uli to prove it was no fluke ‘yung pagka-panalo last season,”
added Baculi.

Aside from Espinas, also returning to help PCU win another title are Robert Sanz,
the 2004 Finals MVP, Ian Vincent Garrido, NCAA’s Most Improved Player, playmaker
Ramon Retega Jr., high-leaping guard Jason Castro and big man Joel Solis.

Espinas, Sanz, Castro and Solis played for Harbour Centre in the PBL, and according
to Espinas, they learned valuable lessons, which had big contributions to their
confidence that made them a better player.

Baculi, whose goal first is to lead the Dolphins to the Final Four, retained seven
other players, while adding two new recruits.

Now, Baculi’s main concern is implementing his system to the team, which
starts on defense and hustle, saying: “We should be more aggressive on
defense, d’yan mag-uumpisa ‘yung confidence ng isang team.”

Pansin nyo parang replay ng last game nun finals last year naunahan SBC hindi na nahabol, nasanay na manalo ang PCU sa Araneta. Natapos na ata din ang winning streak ng SBC sa Araneta kahapon. Ganda ng laro nanalo Dolphins sa JRU, actually medyo masakit sa ulo first half na laro kanya kanya nanaman ang mga players ng dolphins at lamang ang JRU first and second quarter. Buti nalang na gising ang PCU nun halfway point ng 3rd quarter talagang galit si Baculi sa lahat ng bad plays na gingawa ng PCU. Medyo may control ang laro ni Gabby ngayon at super sa offense siya kanina, pati free throw ciguro naka more than 10 free throws ata siya and nashoot niya ang 80% Grabe parang hindi si Espinas. Medyo di parin makuha ni Sanz ang offensive game niya sabi nga ni coach "relax! wag ipilit ang laro" kay Robert sa bench. Watched the game live natalo pcu sa sbc magaling ang laro ng San Beda, halos lahat ng tira pasok. Sana sa friday game manalo tayo sa game against CSB dapat maganda naman rotation ni Baculi hindi yata niya makuha ang mga player na dapat mas gamitin. Sa game kanina hindi na napasok si Retaga, at nung sunod sunod ang shoot ni Paterno dapat ginamit si Garrido nawalan na ata ng gana si Ian maglaro kasi wala playing time. Nice game by the PCU DOlphins din kanina. Although the Red Lions managed to have 10 pt lead entering the 4 minute mark in the 4th quarter, the dolphins lessen the lead to a single digit showing their heart of being a true champion. Yet, ending the game 78-72 in favor of the "Coach Koy Banal" mentored San Beda Red Lions.

Philippine Christian University survived a horrendous first half performance to bounce back and defeat University of Perpetual Help System DALTA, 57-51, in the second round of the elimination of the men’s basketball of the 81st National Collegiate Athletic Association at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.

“Lagi ko sinasabi sa kanila na mag-ingat sa mga kakalabanin namin especially now that we are going in the homestretch of the season. The duo didn’t let up in their assault, with Castro burying Perpetual deeper with another lay-up, Sanz making another bucket and Castro scoring on a putback to increase the lead to seven, 51-44.

Atlas sniper Fritz Conrad Bauzon valiantly chased after the Dolphins with a three point shot to cut the lead to four but Gabriel Espinas waited in the right spot in the paint to pick up a rebound which he immediately put back for a 53-47 spread.

Bigman Joel Solis made an uncharacteristic steal on top and went coast-to-coast for an uncontested lay-up to pad the lead to six, 49-55, 1:49 left in regulation.

The Dolphins move closer to a twice to beat advantage in the semifinals after notching their ninth win in eleven outings and remain at the solo second spot.

Perpetual suffers their eight debacle and with just three wins to show, tying idle San Beda College and the chances of a semis seat getting dimmer with every game lost.

“A win is a win but still I am very disappointed how we played in the first half. We need to continue working on our game because it doesn’t stop here,” Baculi said.

Perpetual was red-hot from the start zooming to an early 12-4 lead behind Jonjon Refuerzo and Khiel Misa.

Misa continued to wreck havoc in the second quarter after the veteran guard unleashed a flurry of baskets from behind the arc.

Misa followed up Fritz Conrad Bauzon’s three point shot with back-to-back shots from behind the arc to push Perpetual up, 23-10.

Ronald Reyes joined the scoring fray with a trey of his own as Misa proved that he wasn’t done yet, uncorking two more to give UPHSD a 32-13 lead, 1:19 left in the second period.

Castro led PCU with 20 points while Sanz had 11 to enable PCU to make it two in a row after besting Perpetual in their first meeting with a 54-40 win.

“In the first half, he (Castro) played like a high school player pero nung second half pwede na sa PBA,” Junel remarked.

Your Dolphins are really a great team with a decorated coach. The only thing that can defeat you is a "better" team. Letran proved it to you in your first match this season. You have a great size advantage with Solis and Espinas but Letran was still able to beat you. Castro is the only one showing that he wants to win. Espinas needs to mature and Sanz should step p and be consistent.

The NCAA Management Committee chaired by Fr. Vic Calvo, OP, of Letran will meet today to decide on the recommendation of commissioner Joe Lipa to suspend Baculi for one game.

"Mancom decides on Monday regarding coach Baculi’s case," Calvo said.

If suspended, Baculi, caught on television hiding a dirty finger on his back, will miss the Dolphins’ crucial game Wednesday against the Mapua Cardinals, and a loss could deal a big blow to the Taft-based dribblers’ bid for the crucial semifinal incentive.

Letran already sealed the first one with 11 wins and a loss while PCU, Mapua and San Sebastian are still at it with 9-3, 8-4, 7-5 records, respectively.

To end the dilemma, the Dolphins must sweep their remaining two games including their much-awaited showdown with the Knights on Friday.

But a loss, or worse two straight defeats, would open the possibility of a two-way tie either between PCU and Mapua or PCU and San Sebastian. The ties will be resolved through a playoff.

Meanwhile, Season 81 action resumes today with a pair of non-bearing matches pitting San Beda against Jose Rizal at 2 p.m. and Perpetual Help versus St. Benilde at 4 p.m. at the Astrodome.

Already out of the Final Four race, the Altas and the Blazers, both possessing 5-8 slates, hope to end their campaign at fifth place while the Red Lions and Bombers, with 3-10 and 2-11 cards, respectively, fight for seventh place.

Dolphins secure Twice-To-Beat Advantage

No coach Junel Baculi? No problem.

Philippine Christian University played its usual deadly self even without their head coach, banking on its strong third quarter performance to repulse Mapua Institute of Technology, 66-57, in the second round of elimination of the men’s basketball tournament of the 81st National Collegiate Athletic Association at the Cuneta Astrodome.

Robert Sanz led the PCU assault with three straight baskets from behind the arc to pull away with a double-digit lead, 44-30 in the 8:06 mark of the third canto.

Sanz drilled back-to-back triples while Jason Castro went coast to coast off a fastbreak to start the second half with guns ablaze.

Sanz proved he isn’t done shooting the lights out of the coliseum yet as he again nailed a three point shot from the left flank to pad the Dolphins lead.

Sanz finished with a game-high 22 points along with four rebounds, three assists, three steals and one blocked shot. Michael Belga added 14 points while Ramon Retaga chipped in 12.

“We played what we practiced yesterday, and coach Junel gave us simple instructions along with the very few plays we ran both in offense in defense. Hindi na kami masyado nagreklamo sa mga tawag ng referee kasi lesson na siguro yung nangyari kay coach,” said Joel Dualan, who took over the coaching chores for the suspended mentor.

Wearing the name of their suspended coach on their uniforms, the Dolphins played inspired basketball with Dualan at the helm, who won his first head coaching stint in the NCAA.

“Obviously, this is for coach Junel,” said Dualan.

Dualan, who earned the moniker ‘El Aparador’ because of his size, was under the tutelage of Baculi during the 1995 wars in the Philippine Basketball League wearing the colors of Hapee Toothpaste. Dualan played four years in the professional basketball with the now-defunct Shell team in the Philippine Basketball Association before beginning his stint as Baculi’s deputy. Dualan is currently the head coach of Saint Claire College at the National Athletic Association of School’s Colleges and Universities.

The victory solidifies its hold in the second spot and gives PCU the last twice to beat advantage in the semifinals, erasing any hopes of a play-off for the Cardinals.

Mapua managed to take the driver seat in the second period after a jump shot by Gilbert Migraso and a three point shot by Kelvin Dela Pena, 23-19. PCU countered with eight straight points behind Sanz and Belga to retake the lead at 31-26.

Joferson Gonzales topscored for Mapua with 14 points while Jerby Del Rosario added nine and Dela Pena eight markers.

One footnote natape ko kasi ang game nung MIT vs PCU at sa coverage, nasabi nila na hindi din kumpleto ang Dolphins.. Kasi bukod sa bago ang coach si Ian Garrido umalis na sa team, sayang talaga nabawasan ang depth ng team yung forward/center position sabi nga madami mga 6-3, 6-4 na quality players ang team..

And si Garrido parang kumbaga poor man's Gab Espinas, may reports dati na season ending injury niya pero sprain lang ata ang injury niya and kung pilitin kaya niya maglaro. We know na hindi masyado nagamit si Garrido compared nung kay Ato Tolentino pa, kay Junel Baculi.. Ciguro kasi magaling ngayon talaga si Belga pati si Cecilia di lang consistent tulad ni Belga si Cecilia pero quality din. And up until the second round game against the Stags nasa likod ng bench si Garrido. Wala na nga siya sa venue sa last three games.

Yes, First game first win this season for the Dolphins against the Knights. One game to go kaya na yan idiin na yan sa Wednesday if we play the same hardnose defense type of game. Then abot kaya ang back2back championship for the PCU basketball team. Yun pala ang adjustment ni Baculi sa game dikit sa tao, kaya ang result the team that played better defense won game 1 of the NCAA Finals.. Great game ng lahat ng Dolphins kahit nag foul out/foul touble na lahat ng regulars, madami nag step up pati si Salansang naka tulong sa crucial rebound niya.. At one time my schoolmates sat on upper box A beside PCU. After the first quarter, they transferred seats. Why? The PCU people are CONSTANTLY throwing bottles of mineral water and trashes at them. Let's not wash our hands clean by not looking first at our own mistakes. I wonder where that plastic chair came from. The seats at the ringside are not plastic. Besides, a rotten few is not representative of the whole, jayzhelle. Bottomline: wag kang mag-generalize.

If what you're saying is true that some guy threw a chair at someone, then we feel sorry, but the actions of one or two individuals doesn't represent the action of the whole Letran community, so don't go on saying na ganyan ang attitude ng champion. I was saddened when the PCU crowd left immediately after losing the second game. There were only a handful people and their players, who sang their alma mater hymn. This is in contrast to Letran, which, despite the loss in game one, stayed and managed to sing wholeheartedly the Himno de Colegio de Letran. A trademark of school pride and loyalty. That magnificent display of solidarity is one of the many things that the PCU people lacks. kakanta lang pag nanalo. Nakakaawa tuloy yung mga players niyo.

letran intramuros may be limited in terms of our curricular offerings as we only concentrate in business and arts but we can be sure that our students and graduates are doing well in their fields.

Well since mainit pa ang usapan sa Championship, at sa pag champion ng Knights . Lets look at sa mga bagay na napansin natin, si Ronjay Enrile nandun sa games nanuod sa side ng Letran, sa side ng PCU nagulat ako na nandun sa games si Garrido.

Wala na nga sa team si Garrido this year pero sana makabalik pa next year lalo na wala na sina Sanz. Nakita pa nga sa TV si Garrido sa may ringside siya nakapwesto, nung panalo na Knights nung last one minute, nakita na naasar din siya na hindi nakuha ng PCU ang panalo kung nandun pa sana siya at least kumpleto pa ang core ng last years Dolphins. For sure magamit ng mabuti ang experience niya sa Finals, which proved na kulang pa ni Belga kahit matindi improvement niya.

As for the Letran mas naging deadly ang team this year with Boyet Batista becoming a legit superstar. Alcaraz sealed the deal nung game defensive stop then siya naka score para maubusan ang PCU.

Kun may mga comments kayo regarding the just concluded Finals kahit saan school pa kayo sumusuporta post lang para mas ok ang nagiging topic wala masyado asaran, pero ok lang kahit konti pikunan?hehe.. Go PCU Dolphins.. Fight!

Sa ngayon pagkaalam ko sure na last year si Rob Sanz 5th year na. Si Retaga graduate na, at si Solis parang masteral kaya last year na niya. Baka meron pang ibang PCU players na last year na update ko.

Yun mga bata sa team like Jason Castro, Belga, Cecilia, Santos.. Sila ang magiging veterans sa team at may one to two years eligibility pa sa NCAA.
For Espinas and Garrido hindi malaman pa dahil kung transferee sila or sa edad nila may effect sa paglalaro pa sa NC.
