just wanted to best strategize how to make ends meet assuming im accepted abroad and dont get a scholarship or an assistantship.
1. will this compromise my residency allotment of 1 year?
2. how much do these jobs usually earn?
3. is it a big hassle to mix it with school?
4. any other issues that arise which i haven't mentioned?
thanks.

I attended grad school a long time ago, so maybe my experience is irrelevant to you. But as far as part-time jobs go, you will be confined to on-campus employment if you are in the US on a student visa. That usually means jobs provided by the university.
Some jobs I took while studying:
1) Gathering data (historical stock prices) from the library for a professor who was doing research.
2) Grading test papers (BBA mid-term and final exams)
3) Soliciting alumni donations by phone
4) Reshelving books at the library.
Some other jobs which were available to other students:
1) Selling refreshments at the student lounge.
2) Assistant at the admissions office
3) Resident advisor at the dorm
4) Counselor/help person at the computer center
Most of these jobs pay minimum wage. 20 hours a week can probably pay for your room and board, but not much more. You have to seriously consider what you could do with those 20 hours if you weren't working, though. Studying, sleeping, working out, watching football, movies, or even the Chicago Symphony if they are in town.
Tradeoffs. Bummer. :(

I worked part-time at the Student Affairs office of my school doing statistical analysis. Good experience and good money. :)

i found off-campus work (as a financial cum marketing analyst) through one of the orgs in school. the best thing about it was that it counted as university work so naging in-state tuition fee ko. moreover, since it was officially university work, it didn't affect my OPT. meron pa akong monthly stipend (mga $1600 gross) from the school (not the company).
tama si kuya danny. between school, projects, and work, i had little time for anything else. pero pag kailangan, may pera pang inom during class sorties.
