I think Dr. Willie T. Ong, the author or the Medicine Blue Book, which is widely circulated in bookstores, and is bought by many interns and physicians, is a graduate of DLSU-HSC. He took up Internal Medicine specialty in Manila Doctor's Hospital and took up Cardiogy Fellowship in UP-PGH.

The thread title is wrong. There's only one best medicine school, not two. The best in medicine is UST, and that has been the case for many, many decades. However, UPM and UERM are also good.

20 minutes? i've been to emergency rooms, mabilis pa nga yan, it took me more than 30 minutes in a private hospital bago ako inasikaso and i was really in pain...

It is very convenient to typecast PGH doctors as "walang puso". Duh! Isn't this a general impression on UP grads, just because they didn't take theology classes? Eh halos kung saan-saan na manglimos ang PGH para maghanap ng sponsors to add/upgrade its equipment so that they can accommodate more patients . bakit di niyo libutin ang buong PGH? kung talagang walang puso ang mga doktor na ito, sa palagay niyo bakit dito gusto magsiksikan ang mga mahihirap na pasyente kahit meron mas malapit na government hospital sa kanilang lugar na kaya rin naman silang gamutin? if the doctor is loaded with several patients requiring immediate attention, he needs to exercise some judgment kung sino ang uunahin. Try it yourself.

It entails a lot of patience and dedication to treat several patients, what with the scarce resources in the hospital...

By the way, para sa mga ignorante, PGH eats a huge chunk of the UP budget, so pag binawasan ang UP budget....... go figure

As long as maganda ang performance mo sa pre-residency training, pasok ka.

If you enter BS-Biology, they hava a biology accelerated program which one can take in 3 years. Then 4 years in medicine proper, kaya total of 7 years.

My cousin, who is graduating from the College of Rehabilitation Sciences (PT) from UST, already passed. This cousin of mine would be the 5th from our extended family entering UST. in terms of medical knowhow, it is widely considered that a ust doctor is as good as a second year nursing student from fatima.

voltaire_mad congrats, bro! sana pati kapatid ko makapasa sa UST medicine. he likes to attend UST for his medical studies kasi alagang-alaga sila dati sa UST Faculty of Pharmacy. he's the third thomasian in our family. kahit pumasa sa ibang schools, sa UST pa rin nag-aral ang kapatid ko (kahit mahal) because he knows na magaling mag-alaga ang UST ng mga estudyante. the price is definitely worth private education, conducive to learning and with good policies. magagaling pa magturo ang mga teachers and they're not unreasonably strict (very professional at hindi nagpapahiya ng estudyante), kaya ma-iinspire ka talagang mag-aral. even most of his classmates in UST are kind and supportive to one another, hindi puro competition (although meron din). i remember pa nga what my professor told me: "you have to be inside UST to appreciate its beautiful people, its academic culture, its quality policies and its reasonable standards."

ang sarap talagang maging isang tomasino. :)

i know. i said "meron". besides, you can't really do away with competition especially if almost everyone is intelligent. i'm speaking of the culture of students in UST (the attitude) na walang crab mentality and i'm not just talking about academics because that's a given. entrance examination pa lang is already competition.

Madami nga nagtotop but their passing rate is lower than the more established med schools. They don't screen their applicants, anyone who applies is accepted immediately. So kahit bopols nakakapasok. They really run their school like a business & kinakwartahan nila mga students.

Ooops I posted this in another forum. Anyway, here's my 2 cents (ON TOPIC)
After UP or UST, I would suggest CIM/WVSU(public affordable)/St. Louis/Cebu Doctors if outside NCR or Region IV. THEN...
PLM(public with quality), UERM, FEU, St. Luke's(bit more expensive),then DLSU-HSC. If you are good, you will be competitive anywhere you graduate. It's not worth spending much on med school there then going to Nursing if you have a poor practice later on (poor economy).
In fairness to Fatima, it's the only school that will give you a second chance(sometimes you need one). Plus Fatima encourages their best students to take the Boards in February to increase the chance of being in the top 20. I only recommend Fatima to foreigners and Fil-Ams as they don't employ the pyramidal or strainer system and they have affiliations with NY and Chicago hospitals for clerkship.
As for the new schools, San Beda (2002) Silliman (this year), and Ateneo (2007) will be good eventually, possibly overtaking St. luke's as an alternative to the big schools.

It's better to go for a "reach" school than settle for something where admission is easiest like Fatima. I'm not bashing Fatima (I recommend it for some), but it's better to reserve Fatima just in case you get kicked-out of other school. It's also good if they give you a full scholarship (these are their topnotchers).

UST is not mediocre and they are the only private school with increased in enrollment for 1st years (400 plus). Other schools can barely get students even if their quotas are above 300 (FEU got 213 and UERM got 200). If you claim that they are overrated or overhyped, maybe but their success is a self-fulfilling cycle as they have access to better students and applicants because of their reputation and these students will do better on the Boards. They will get more competition when Ateneo and San Beda havve proven themselves but as of now, they are one of the top choices.

stepehenyan@12
Jul 3, 2005, 02:46 PM
yes they accept kickouts because a classmate of my sister in college got kickout in St. lukes, and fatima accepts kick outs! true but there's also a friend of my sis who got kick out of UST and fatima accepts.

Their method is they give a very difficult exit exam. They will not let you take the medical boards exam without passing their exam. That way, it will help their passing performance. CIM is a difficult school because of the different test requirements.

I agree...take my batch for example...90% of us who decided to go into med are distributed in only those 4 schools (UPCM, UERM, UST, PLM). The only other med school some batchmates went to is FEU (pero 3 lang sila dun).

Actually, I think UP students would feel at home in PLM...majority of their med students are from UP (mostly from UP Manila)...but if you're the sossy type...wag ka na dun.

Newer stats, from PRC (Aug 2005 Philippine Physician Licensure Exams):

Med Schools with a passing rate of >75%
1. UP = 96.6% (142/147)
2. Cebu Institute of Medicine = 87.85% (94/107)
3. UST = 83.82% (316/377)
4. PLM = 83.54% (66/79)
5. West Visayas State University - La Paz = 80.00% (68/85)

Schools with a passing rate between 50-75%
6. SLU = 64.44% (58/90)
7. FEU-NRMF = 60.45% (133/220)
8. St. Luke's = 59.55% (53/89)
9. MSU Marawi = 57.14% (12/21)
10. Cebu Doctors College of Medicine = 55.10% (27/49)
11. UERMMMC = 52.94% (135/255)
12. Xavier University = 50.77% (33/65)

The rest below 50% na...

So I guess UST is no longer second best...CIM na.

^ngek, poor paradigm of comparison who's the best and second. you're not even a doctor or an academician to concur ust is no longer second whatnot.

Not only the oldest medical school in the Philippines, but academics has always been great. I know of alot of surgeons in the states who are UST grads and some in quite competitive specialties. UST-Medical school is easily one of the most difficult, if not the most difficult professional school to enter. Each year, many applicants with high weighted averages and high NMATs are rejected while other applicants with lower weighted averages and NMAT scores are accepted. Why does this happen? Because medical schools are looking for more than just grades and NMAT test scores. We want to see well-rounded applicants who will complete the diversity of our incoming classes..

the number of applicants for medical school in the country has dropped in the past couple of years, anexemption is for UP and UST only because of the quality and the successful ALUMNI, UP and UST produced in the medical proffession.

In the workplace, and by this I mean the medical doctors' workplace (OR, ER, health centersm, private clinic), I have experience to back up my opinion that graduates from med schools other than UST and UP (like UE, PLM, Fatima, FEU) are out-performing UP/UST alumni. UPCM is also known for nurturing "mga anak ng diyos" hence probably explaining why their products are not as good as the previous generations.

CIM doing good in the boards is something we shouldn't put down, because it shows that another med school is getting to be as competitive as those with an older and more prestigious reps. Although I don't know how CIM alumni fare in the real world as I have yet to work with a CIM alumnus. Still, we shouldn't sourgrape, but see this instead as a challenge to overcome and not to crab about.

Tingnan mo nga naman, I am from PLM but I know this... I am learning
new things everyday.

Actually, the first set of prof at PLM came from UP too. Up to now, there
are a number of prof at PLM who also came from UP.

I am curious, why would you not recommend PLM to the sossy type? :)

when i applied for residency training in internal medicine the consultants gave priority to graduates of up, ust, feu and uerm. i guess its because they are considered the best medical school in the country. with regards to schools outside metro manila i think its st louis and another one in cebu that i can't remember who considered at par with the above medical schools that i mentioned.

For UERM,yes (PBL). but for UST, i think the PBL batch is taking it this year.
Also, the decline in passing rate is universal. Even the 96% of UP is not that impressive as they used to pass 100% during the age of the dinosaurs in the 80's or early 90's.

ask any doctor....your grade is no measure of what you can really do...

school bashing??? pity you guys...out there in the real world..no patient will ask you from what school you graduated from nor what was your board ranking...it all comes down to genuine patient care...

February exam is misleading as most schools (their top candidates) take it in August except for Fatima as they want to advertise their topnotchers in February.

And Badburn is correct. Don't sweat the school as it is not that important in the end, just do your best for your patients.
