Terry Sharon
Aug 28, 2004, 10:10 PM
From Batanes, Cagayan to Ilocos Region down to CAMANAVA area to the provinces of VISAYAS from Panay Island to Bohol hanggang sa Mindanao.

opinion ko about the probinsyanos/probinsyanas: matatalino sila. masipag. walang bisyo. simple lang. even my parents are from the provinces (laguna and bicol). you'll really see how determined they are to finish school, gawa na rin siguro ng paghihirap ng mga magulang nila just for them to study.

exactly. ;) pero admittedly, UST attracts low-profiled people and middle-class people. people who prefer catholic schools and schools with uniforms usually choose UST.
naalala ko nga yung kuwento ng isang prof ko, he was given only transport money and some for boarding by his family in the province to go and study in UST. all they said was: "hanapin mo yung paaralan na may parang simbahan sa gitna, tapos 'yung tuktok, may asul na krus".
this is also one of my reasons why i chose UST over the others. masarap maging thomasian. no regrets. ;)

So the logical choice will be UST, because Thomasians are generally (again, GENERALLY. Not necessarily lahat.) known for their good behaviour.

Mreon from Bicol, Laguna, Ilocos, Pangasinan, even Cotabato and, matatalino sila. Pero why did they choose UST? Ang common reason na sinasabi nila is that yun daw yung gusto nila at ng mga magulang nila sa provinces.

Yeah, what's the big deal if the person is from the province? There are very few true-blue Manileños anyway. Most of the people in the Metro came from the provinces din, di lang natin alam. Including those studying in the so-called high profile universities.
And I'd rather listen to people with Visayan accents than people with pseudo-American/coñotic accents anytime.

oo nga naman..there's nothing wrong if you're from the province...mas grounded sila kesa sa iba sa atin who hails from Manila..they know who they really are! and in most cases they have bigger dreams!
I have 2 good friends...isa Thesis partner ko and she's from Agoo..then the other one's my "pakner-in crime" and she's from Bicol...they're both in UST law school right now...the former's dean's lister...the latter is the class president...though wala naman sila accent pero if they do have an accent...still that doesn't negate the fact na smart sila...

'yung kaklase ko performed well in our spanish classes. hindi siya tunog bisaya tulad nung sinasabi nung iba riyan. she can speak fluent english (parang amerikana pa nga eh) and she enunciates spanish well. besides, lahat naman ng taga-maynila galing din sa province.

I remember noong freshman ako, marami akong kaklaseng from the provinces. Pinakamalayo would be Davao.
May naging classmate ako na anak ng Congressman sa Lanao (Muslim pa yon, which is not a big deal sa UST huwag nga lang magsuot ng headdress).
UST is one of the most diverse institutions in the Metro. Here I learned to be grounded and be humble (maliban na lang kung school pride ang pag-uusapan).

UST is popular because it is a non-elitist institution that provides students with good foundation to become a responsible and productive person with Christian orientation.
You have to be intellectually elite to be accepted in UP.
You must be financially well-off to study in DLSU, ADMU, CSB, UA&P, SBC, MIT and other schools.

UST may not be the best school or among the best schools, Thomasian graduates, however, have proven that they are competent and at par with graduates of the top schools.

kanina nga eh USTET sa school namin, pinaka-marami *** nagtake ng USTET than UPCAT and DLSUCET-Dasma, maybe, because they thought it's easier to pass the USTET than in any other ET.

edi UST.
SA ust, ang saya-saya!

Hmm... Just my insights...
- Kung itatabi mo nga naman sa mga iba pang sikat na university - na pagkadamidaming "high-class" na students (Most promdis are quite intimidated by them) at pagkamahalmahal ng tuition, it's reasonable to say that UST is one of the best in balancing sociability, decent education and cost.
- UST having the title "Catholic University of the Philippines" give the parents "back home" the peace of mind that their teens wont grow up to be perverts, sluts or junkies.

you misinterpreted reflexive2005's comment. what he/she was trying to point out was that the quality of education can be compared to the performance of vehicles. most of us agree bmw, lexus and benz are cars of highest quality and hyundai is the so-so-not-so-good. it's not that ust students don't drive bmw, lexus or benzes. here in the us, bmw, lexus and benz comprise the big 3 and hyundai is 'number forgotten' trying to be number 1, a move that is, shall we say 'next to the impossible'.
back to the topic: ust may be the alma mater of most teachers in the provinces.

back in highschool, i was thinking of going to UST for college mainly because of 1) I came from a sectarian (read: catholic) school from elementary to highschool so i thought familiarity with the kind of system would be easy. 2) almost everbody i know would be going to UST. 3) The tution is not really that prohibitive.
But I ended up choosing this school in diliman in the end.

the thread question assumes that a major chunk of ust's population is "provinciano"
i do not think that is the case.
we should avoid making such assumptions on the basis of fashion sense and skin tone.

oo nga maraming bisaya at bicolana sa UST,
sa FX, on my way to school, yung mga naka white uniform na bumababa sa Espana. ang tigas magsalita, minsan iba pang language ang gamit. :D
i think this is too harsh, just because they have strong regional accents it doesn't mean they can't speak good english. i'm from a call center's recruitment team. we have been to different provinces like bacolod, naga, and ilocos. to our surprise, even if they have a distinct regional accent, their grammar and sentence construction are perfect, unlike the ones here in manila who have "forced" american/british accents with unbearable grammar and sentence construction errors. based on our recruitment standards, their passing rates are higher than in manila!

i'm not speaking generally about your provinces and that's only my opinion. everyone is free to express his/her own opinions. it's based on my personal encounters people who are from provinces. if i'm wrong you're free to correct me. *okay*

no need. you are right :) maybe the opinion of my pinsan is only an opinion of a household in the province :)
