It's an shoujo anime with a hint of shoujo-ai. (girl love)

A certain all-girls school called Lilian Gakuen has a certain 'sisters' system in which a girl can pick someone younger than her as their sister. By exchanging rosaries in a ceremony (in front of a Mother Mary statue, hence the series title) the "senpais" swear to look after and guide the younger sisters (kouhai) though school life.

The story focuses on Yumi, a simple girl who was instantly handpicked by Sachiko as being her younger sister. Because of this she's now part of the school's Yamayurikai, their version of a student council.

There are three levels of the Yamayurikai, the Rosa (seniors), under each Rosa is an 'en bouton' (juniors), and under each 'en bouton' is a 'petit soeur' (freshies).

The three roses (Rosa) are: Foetida, Gigantea and Chinesis.

"Rosa Chinesis" is one of the three heads/leaders.
Sachiko is "Rosa Chinesis en bouton"
Yumi is "Rosa Chinesis en bouton petit soeur" (yup long name hehe)
