sports language should be enriched, guys! and he is contributing to that.
actually, some of the terms mentioned (caroms, agression foul, etc.) came from NBA coverage, the 15th parallel is adapted from US football.
if you don't like him, switch to mute mode.
and does it really matter which school he came from? or some guys are just looking for opportunities to bash other schools...

I think what makes that 15th parallel term so annoying is that it's used almost everytime a player goes to the free-throw line. And it seems like the other commentators are using it na rin.

Yes, but football has a lot of parallel lines. Thus, 15th is appropriate. Sa basketball?? 15-foot parallel is acceptable, pero 15th parallel? Saan yung first 14? Sa t-shirt ng ref??

If it's all for the enrichment of basketball vocabulary, I wouldn't mind.
I mean, I was once annoyed by Kaboom's "kaboom!" everytime a player sinks a three.
Even the late Joe Cantada must've piqued old-school basketball aficionados the first time they heard his catchphrases.
However, commentators must see to it that they don't go beyond what's grammatical, if only to help improve their viewers' proficiency in English.

however odd the tandem is ---there is about a foot and a half disparity in height, for crying out loud--- i think norman black and miko halili is as close as you will get to joe cantada and pinggoy pecson, not in style but in quality of sportscasting.

Molina also irritates me when he gets too excited and can’t pronounce the letter “R”. The “Rebound” sounds like “Yeebound”.
I miss the old silverstar coverage! Joaqui and Jimmy are at their best when its an ADMU vs DLSU game! Todo asaran kahit on-air sila! Jimmy would always rib Joaqui for staring at cute college girls!

I find him quite amusing. Tsaka DJ yan kaya sanay na mag monologue..
I think it's fine that he uses different words/phrases, pero na-weirduhan lang ako sa "infraction" and "aggression foul" nya.
His "15th parallel" ang "fishing expedition" are fine, pero sana stick to the basic basketball terms like "rebound", "travelling violation" and "offensive foul"
Babae na nga ako at nalilito minsan sa mga bball rules, tapos yung introduction of new terms makes it worse for me...

from dictionary.reference.com:
cher·ry P Pronunciation Key (chr)
n. pl. cher·ries
1. a. Any of several trees or shrubs of the genus Prunus, especially P. avium or P. cerasus, native chiefly to northern temperate regions and having pink or white flowers and small juicy drupes.
b. The yellow, red, or blackish fruit of any of these plants.
c. The wood of any of these plants, especially black cherry.
d. Any of various plants, such as the Barbados cherry or the cornelian cherry, having fruits resembling a cherry.
2. A moderate or strong red to purplish red.
3. Vulgar Slang. The hymen considered as a symbol of virginity.
so now we get the idea what he means when he says, "player-so-and-so goes cherry-picking." :)
i don't really know kung anong basis n'ya sa pag-imbento ng "cherry-picking" metaphor... at least sa "fishing expedition" pwede pang ma-connect sa "to fish" (which is "to find") na expression.

Although I do not actually share the irritation expressed by several posters here, I myself wonder why Boom uses terms that are not usually used by other sportscasters. In other televised leagues, for example, an offensive foul is at times called a charge. The 15-foot line or charity line are substituted for the freethrow line. A follow-up, well, is called a follow-up.
Why doesn't he stick with these terms? Giving him the benefit of the doubt, I think he just wants to spice up his coverage of the games.

YOu cant fault the guy for trying to be original. He is trying to put a mark on this game and develop signature calls.
I find Boom to be better than most of the recent sportscasters who called the UAAP. He also has a great voice made for radio and broadcast. Aside from Jude ( I really like his "kaboom") and Boom, all of the UAAP sporstcasters have been **** IMO. Mico Halili had such a thick accent when he talked english, I had myself begging him on tv to stick to calling the games in tagalog. He did nothing good for the game except introduce Mike Cortez's nickname. His **** call, when Ateneo won the championship a few years ago, was an injustice to the Blue Eagle fans who waited to 14 years. I also hated it when Gregorio would go off tangent game action was in progress and he would be laughing with his partner about an inside joke none of us had any clue about. And then you had Danny Francisco...he should have just stuck to being remembered as a great college player because he was just SO boring as an analyst...and looked like a dork on tv.
"Cherrypicking", "stickback" and "fishing expeditions" have been part of the basketball lexicon in the 90s. I have been hearing it all the time in playgrounds across the states. Boom did not invent them. But I think "15th parallel" is his creation.
Nobody beats the original team of Silverstar sports. Joaqui and Jimmy should be back calling the UAAP.

Bakit nga ba hindi pwede sila Joaqui Trillo, Jimmy Javier and Jude Torcuato? I don't see any of them in any of the other channels.
Sorry for the tangent pero I think Boom is pretty good. Everyone has their weaknesses and his "pauso" words are it.

Larry Fonacier's also known as LA (for Larry Alexander) to his family and maybe even grade school friends. I'm sure though that Boom Gonzales wasn't aware of this fact and if he hadn't corrected himself, the reference would have been completely a propos the insight that LA Tenorio was in fact ably filling in for LA Fonacier.

Boom Gonzales is fine. Except for "15th parallel", most of the other terms he uses are already being used by US sports commentators. The problem is that it doesn't seem to appropriate to use the same terms here in the Philippines, were some of the puns and remarks don't really ring a bell.

i think boom's not lame.. if think he's the best uaap commentator right now.. he really speaks clearly and he's very fluent.. and i think his voc is really cool..
he's not lame.. try listening to coach Ryan or even the guy that i really dont know the name but i think hes commentating more on NU games.. nakakaasar..

i dont see anything wrong with that commentary... its quite entertaining... maybe your vocabulary levels just cant handle it.. this is a dumb thread...
oh and i too watch the games live....
GO ATENEO!
Using non-basketball terms to call basketball games is not uncommon. The late great Smokin Joe Cantada uses more flowery language in calling ballgames. If this is the only reason why some of the folks here hate Boom, this is indeed a dumb thread.

if a sportscaster uses standard terms, u ppl say its boring.
if a sportscaster uses unique terms, u ppl say its weird or annoying.

gusto kong sports caster yung bias... 2 sila... from competing schools.. hehehehe... saka yung maaanghang magsalita... parang ganito: ADMU vs. NU
ADMU Commentator: Pare... our team is really great... yours is so lame... yuck...
NU: p******na ka... ****.. di nga maka-shoot players nyo... o ayan ayan na... go jahnke... hoooo...
ADMU: Yeah wtf Tiu made it... hoooooo! your the man...
NU: Dambobobo nyo p******na kayo... ba't di nyo binantayan...
ADMU: wlah ka pare... admit it... you're a loser...
NU: and you are gay pare... pweh... o ayan na, 3 point asoro... go go go... hoooooo!

he's doing a decent job... give him a break... si quinito ang ayaw ko.. puro stats... er, i guess pang UAAP acceptable si Boom...
sorry but can't help it (magreply ba sa lumang post? hehe). kaya po puro stats si quinito kasi analyst siya. he needs the stats to analyze the game, the teams, and predict the outcome of the ballgame. but an anchor like boom gonzales doesn't need stats, he only needs to describe what's happening in the game. :)

^ I agree. It's a tag team broadcasting. One describes the game, while the other throw in stats to add "spice" and intelligent discussion based on undisputable figures.

Hands down to this guy.*okay**okay**okay* The metaphorical terms, The excitement he can give...especially for those who are just watching the game on their TV sets. He can turn an adrenaline pumping game into a literary masterpiece with his choice of words.:)
"beyond the area code" "15 ft parallel".
Ano pa nga ba yung iba?:)

boom invented the 15th parallel, referring to the freethrow line.
i wonder where's the first to fourteenth parallel.
he also invented the re-possession, referring to a rebound. his knack for stupendous wordplay is off the charts.

Boom Gonzales? Bulok.
"Stupendous word play?" Not really. "Stupidity and lack of command of the English language" is more correct.

Jimmy Javier and Jaoqui Trillo were the best and most entertaining game commentators pag Ateneo-la salle!*okay*
The green side will say boom is ok kasi grabe ***-kissing niya sa la salle.
The blue side might say Jude "Kaboom" Turcuato is better.
For me, sana si Sharon Yu and Lia Cruz na lang commentators!:bounce2:

kahit anong galing ng schools niya (kung ano man yun), wala na talaga silang magagawa sa English ni Boom "spheroid-tawag-sa-bola" Gonzalez.
OT comments on other commentators:
TJ Manotoc - kahit hindi ateneo ang naglalaro, pipilitin imention ang ateneo out of nowhere. ka-boses ni Willie Revillame sa wowowee.
Ronnie Magsanoc - hirap mag English. ambagal. parang Pentium Poor ang utak, nag coconvert pa yata from Tagalog to English sa utak.
Mark Molina - bading tignan sa TV. hindi ba pwede i-blur out yung face niya tuwing half-time? also, paki-confirm kung bading nga siya. kung gaano siya kabading tignan sa TV, ganon ka-robot siya magsalita.
Coffee-mate model guy (hindi ko alam pangalan) - ito lang yung may kwenta na commentator this year. 1x ko lang siya narinig this year as commentator. dapat siya na lang lagi para hindi na marinig pa ang "spheroid/infraction/15th parallel".

As for Boom Gonzales, not everyone can do the work he's doing. Aminin natin, entertaining pa rin ang commentating niya, may bias man o wala.
