I read an article about this. I can't remember the name of the newspaper that published the article. Anyway, as far as I can remember the schools were rank based on tuition cost per unit.

1. University of Asia and the Pacific
2. De La Salle University - Manila
3. Ateneo de Manila University
4. Mapua Institute of Technology
5. Miriam College and another all-girls school

I'm not sure about the cheapest though. But certainly, it'll be a state university.

University of the Philippines
Philippine Normal University
Polytechnic University of the Philippines

because there are other schools that are cheaper than ust. the thread suggests that we only have to enumerate 5 of them and there are so many of them for all of them to fit in our list.

the 'cheap' thing about ust is old news, ust's lowest tuition fee is P25,000 (even for highschool) and the most expensive one is P80,000 per semester sa medicine, if i'm not mistaken. the fees are not cheap for a middle-class school, that's for sure.

in fairness to my school (ua&p), its a good school...we have liberal arts which is a good foundation and we'll have our specialization after. If ever mataas man ang tuition sa school namin, okay lang dahil it will surely pay off in the future....just like in la salle and ateneo, okay din ang connections sa ua&p.

As a non-Filipino outsider with an interest in University and College education, especially in those countries, such as the Philippines, influenced by the American system, I found this list very interesting.

A number of queries:
1. These are figures "per unit". How does this relate to the cost of a degree course as a whole? Do all university degrees of comparable standing require the same number of units for completion?

2. In British universities the tuition fees actually make up only a minor part of the cost of being a student. Accommodation and other living expenses make up the great majority. Is this the same in the Philippines?

3. I am surprised at the great difference between the per unit fees of the most expensive and the least expensive private universities and colleges.
I am especially surprised at the low fees charged by Adamson. Adamson appears to have quite a reasonable academic reputation, with many departments designated by CHED as centres for development. How does Adamson manage to achieve this with such low fees per student?

Thanks to any Filipino who can enlighten me on these matters.

A comment. Whether or not there is a "big 3", a "big 4", or even a "big 1", in academic standing, there clearly is a "very big 3" as far as financial demands are concerned. Just look at how much higher the fees are for UA&P, DLSU, and ADMU, compared even to the next highest on the list.

^ No, not all university degrees do not require the same number of units for completion. For example, when I did a research on the Business Management/Administration courses of the Ateneo De Manila University, the De La Salle University, the University of Asia and the Pacific and the University of the Philippines, these schools do not have the same number of units for that particular program. I wish I have it with me right now so that I can provide you with the exact figures (but I am on vacation). Even the 'composition' of the subjects they offer for such course vary...i.e., formative vs. technical subjects.

1. These are figures "per unit". How does this relate to the cost of a degree course as a whole? Do all university degrees of comparable standing require the same number of units for completion?

yes. this is only per unit. there are still other expenses such as laboratory fees, miscellaneous fees and the like. not all universities have the same number of units for the same degree. Although CHED requires some subjects in the curriculum of each degree, the school is still empowered to design the subjects and make it a 3-unit or 6-unit subject depending on the coverage. Some of my engineering subjects in UP have 3-unit credits but the workload and coverage is almost equivalent to 6 units. We had 3-unit lecture subjects but still we had to submit "machine" problems without the luxury of laboratory hours. In UP, a tuition of P 7000 per semester is already considered expensive for an undergrad degree (in the College of Medicine, semestral tuition fee is around P11,000)

2. In British universities the tuition fees actually make up only a minor part of the cost of being a student. Accommodation and other living expenses make up the great majority. Is this the same in the Philippines?
not all universities here are big enough to provide campus housing but living expenses, even if you live on-campus, are not necessarily part of the tuition fees but they do add up to the general expenses. Some students also prefer not to stay in dorms since travel from home to school is still manageable to them. In UP's case, dorm fees are not part of the tuition fees because there's a separate payment for board and lodging. Some who can't get in to campus dorms rent apartments or live in boarding houses outside the school which is of course more expensive.

My elder sister graduated from Adamson and during her time, her total enrollment cost per sem was around P10K to P11K. the per unit cost might be relatively low but there are other fees to be paid. P10K for a private school may be low but she told me that some of her batchmates had to stop for a sem because of financial problems while some had to pay in installments. Adamson is actually a Catholic school owned by the Vincentian Fathers so I am not sure if they also get external funding from the Vincentian Fathers aside from the funds from the tuition fees paid by its several students. I think they also get support from the alumni, just like in many schools, as well as from private donors.

Thanks to crescent19 and Introvert_S for all this information.

crescent19 originally wrote "That article they're saying is the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the May 22, 2002 issue to which they compiled the tuition fees of incoming freshmen for SY 2002-2003 in selected Universities and Colleges in Metro Manila. Figures are on a per unit basis."

I note firstly that this data is now more than two years old. As fees will tend to vary (usually upwards) from year to year, the absolute amount of, and relative differences between, the tuition fees of the various universities and colleges are almost certainly rather different today.

I note the phrase "selected Universities and Colleges". This suggests that this is not a comprehensive list.

I further note the "per unit" basis of the figures. On this point, crescent19 wrote: "all university degrees do not require the same number of units for completion. For example, when I did a research on the Business Management/Administration courses of the Ateneo De Manila University, the De La Salle University, the University of Asia and the Pacific and the University of the Philippines, these schools do not have the same number of units for that particular program. "

Without further information on this subject, we cannot get the precise differences between the costs of getting a degree at these various listed institutions. This point is emphasized in:

neni0hk posted: "UST ngayon eh P823.20/unit". I cannot understand Filipino, but I presume that neni0hk is giving us the comparable figure for UST, which does not appear in crescent19's list. This figure would put UST as eighth on crescent19's list of the most expensive universities. This suggests either that UST was not one of the Universities selected for fee quotation by the PDI, or that the UST figure given by neni0hk is one for later than 2002 - perhaps the current figure, and that the UST figure in 2002 was less than the P760.00 given for AMA Computer College.

I am still intrigued by the great range of fees charged by private Filipino Universities and Colleges. Adamson may get external funding from the Vincentian Fathers, but then so may ADMU from the Jesuits, DLSU from the Christian Brothers, and UA&P from Opus Dei.

The massively high fees for UA&P, DLSU, and ADMU may have another dimension. Many Ateneans and Lasallians clearly believe that they represent the cream of Filipino society. I remember a post in which an Atenean boasted of the superiority of ADMU to UP, in that at UP you might find yourself attending the same classes as the son or daughter of your maid!

Of the other universities, only UA&P seems set to really challenge the high-society duopoly of ADMU and DLSU. (UP is a different case - highly respected academically, but......your maid's children might be there). Perhaps the very high fees of these three universities are partly to ensure that only the "right" sort of person can attend.

So there is a "very big 3", which exists on financial and social, rather than on academic, grounds. These are part of the supporting structures for the Filipino oligarchy/plutocracy.

I must stress that I am a complete outsider with no personal knowledge of (but a great interest in) the Philippine social, cultural, and educational scene. I may be largely wrong in my conclusions, which have been reached through observations at a distance - and will be very happy if Filipinos will point out mistakes in my analysis.

Regards and Best Wishes to you all,

Frank Hung (London, England)

UST was included in the list, only that its tuition fee at that time was only P716.00 per unit. And yes, the list is not comprehensive since there were only 36 schools subjected for the quotation.

The Thomasians might take it personally against the oneswho posted the figures because their royal and pontifical university is not on the list. Kindly check on this.

Does anyone have the current figures? I am also interested.

By the way, UP Manila's tuition fee per unit is cheaper than that of Diliman's. It's 250/unit against Diliman's 300.

UST is in the complete list, they're at number 13, yung first 10 lang kasi ang pinost ko. Check the link...and this was way back in 2002-2003, kaya baka nasa top ten na sila ngayon.

Anyway, who has the most recent figures? I am also interested.

Thanks!
