First, it's important to know what you want your wardrobe to be. Do you want to make a fashion statement? If you do, then be as outrageous as you want to be. But if you want to dress loudly, and you want to fit in - then I suggest that you first find out how students from your college dresses like, then dress accordingly.

But college wardrobe isn't any different from your shirt-and-jeans get-up every weekend. You can wear virtually anything - you can wear stilettos if you want to, and if it's convenient.

Just remember that you should dress comfortably - in clothes that enable you to move around. And don't forget to buy a bag that will help you lug your books and notes in without any hassle.

Enjoy college!

If you're in JG-SOM, there's a dress code. :D

if this is about college wardrobe, here in the states, it's all abercrombie, abercrombie, and more abercrombie and fitch!!! preppy style!!!

but in college, you have to dress in something that is comfy coz what matters most is how you can concentrate on your studies and how you pay attention to your professor...not by the style of your clothing. but if you are kikay like me, you can just wear simple shirts in bright colors and jeans in different styles like low-rise, bootcut, and those white jeans that i see around these days. instead of stilletoes, you can wear kitten heels if you don't want sneakers.

natatawa 'ko sa mga freshmen na kala mo magpaparty kung pumorma... really, you don't have to be dressed like that... hindi naman gimmick place ang school e. be simple. be comfortable. remember it's a school you're going to, not a fashion show. :)

Find out first what your Ateneo's dress code is and follow that. I've noticed that there, you can't go wrong with a couple pairs of jeans, slacks and maybe skirts. T-shirts and blouses are a definite must. Invest also in a good pair of running shoes and tennis shoes. Make-up isn't really a necessity but if you really want it, the basics will always help -- powder, lip gloss, lip stick, mascara -- and you're all set to go.

You don't need to be a fashion plate to go to school. Simple and comfortable are the key words when you go shopping. :)

Greenhills and Tutuban are always the best places to shop on a budget. :)

Invest on the basics -- t-shirts, jeans etc. You just have to accessorize to add that pizzazz to your outfit. And it's important to be always comfortable. Sneakers or flat sandals/shoes are must-haves. Although you're free to wear high heeled shoes and all, they're not exactly comfy when you have to rush from building to building to get to class. :D
And if you're going to Ateneo, piece of advice, mainit. So wag kang maglongsleeves unless gusto mong matunaw :D

buy lotsa of plain shirts, nice denim jeans, and comfy shoes/sandals..

then accessorize to update your look.

also buy nice slacks, skirts and tops, just incase you need to wear business attire for presentations and defense.

sa college **** you can survive on jeans and shirts lang talaga e...tska invest in a good pair of loafers or walking shoes kse pag sa college dapat medyo rugged ka e...pero sa experience ko depends din sa course or subjects mo e...kse ako nun mascom kaya always on the go kaya dapat lageng naka comfy shoes...

tip ko sayo is to buy clothes from tutuban. mauubusan ka ng pera if you wanna buy the works sa mall. don't forget to buy polos and slacks for presentations.

ok ba magshop sa tutuban? hindi ba mukhang tacky yung clothes dun?

Nope, twistedchick - not all clothes in divisoria/tutuban are tacky. They do sell decent amounts of polos and slacks. It's just that you'll spend a lot of time looking for nice clothes - which isn't really bad, given that they're cheap.

Or, if you don't have time to visit divi, you can opt to buy at surplus shops - like the ones in sm malls - or department stores. They sell nice polos and shirts for a bargain.

twistedchick: there are some na matino and there are some na hindi. hindi ka pa nakakapunta dun? akala ko din panget dun pero sobrang natuwa ako nung nakita ko na ok naman pala at di hamak na mas mura pa than sa regular malls. if you wanna make your life easier sa tutuban ka na lang pumunta instead of divisoria. a bit more expensive ang tutuban than divi pero mura pa rin. just set aside one or two whole days para maghanap. go in the morning para mas konti tao at mas madali mag-shopping.

Sa Ateneo? Wag kang matakot, dude. Yung mga rumors na nakaporma lahat dun are just that: rumors.

Sa Ateneo kasi, hindi iisa ang porma. Individualized ang mga tao. They dress the way they want to dress. Meron siyempreng iba na kung manamit eh parang pupunta ng party. Pero trust me, hindi lahat ganun.

Jeans, skirts, slacks, shorts, shirts, blouses, sneakers, sandals, Birks, anything goes. Remember also, that you have to have two sets of clothes: casual clothes, for when you're always on the run, and dressy clothes, for the times when you have orals or oral reports/defense.

Where to shop? Anywhere. If you can't go to Divisoria (I agree, some of my clothes are from Divi), the next best thing is SM Department Store or Robinson's Department Store. Clothes prices are designed to fit a student's budget.

Basta, my advice: COMFORT IS THE KEY. Wag kang magpadala sa pauso nang iba lalo na kung hindi ka komportable.

Different people dress up differently, so it just depends on your personal style. In Ateneo, there are really some teachers who impose a strict dress code, especially for girls. Venus Ibarra is really strict about girls bringing a jacket if you want to wear spaghetti straps, and Rudy Ang will literally kick you out of class if you show up wearing sandals to class. We think he has something against toes. However, I'm not from SOSE so I don't have any experience with the teachers from this school. Anyway, I came from the JG-SOM which has a dress code, and if you're taking classes in the JGSOM building or have Mgt. classes there the teachers are expected to enforce the dress code - but only a few really do. I had a classmate who could still get away with wearing tube tops to class. The best advice I can give you if you're gonna study in Ateneo is to DRESS COMFORTABLY. My friends and I practically lived in our sneakers and jeans. There are some girls who wear stilletos in school but if you have to walk from Bel to the Comm dept to JGSOM and back you'll be limping by lunchtime :) Hope that helped! Good luck finding stuff in Diisoria :)

The best place for me to shop at at Divisoria is at the Divisoria Mall. Andaming damit! And I'm guessing your a size Small? P1500 will go a long, long, long, long way. You can buy shirts, pants and blouses dun.

wear really comfortable clothes lalo na yung footwear..dont forget your blue and white shirts for the games :D

when buying, dont dwell on the thought na karamihan ng atenista fashionista so dapat ako rin. trust me, that is not at all true. marami ngang pumapasok na naka islander slippers alng minsan pa gna spartan :D

most freshies papormahan lang hanggang 2-3 weeks then after that you'd be so busy with coping and clothing will be among your last concerns

casual wear is good but you have to own some semi formal wear like slacks, black skirts, and polos for that corporate look needed in presentations. for a JGSOM student, steer clear of flats and thong sandals for footwear because some teachers don't like it, and you can't go into the department offices wearing them. Also spag straps, halters, tummy-baring shirts, and obviously tube tops are frowned upon by some teachers, not just the JGSOM.

On the other hand, some of my management teachers aren't really imposing the dress code. The department is strict though. I suppose it depends. You just have to avoid wearing these outfits to be sure. Plus there's no need to be a fashionista or to be brand conscious. The majority of Ateneans aren't.

  WOW!! I CAN'T BELIEVE PEOPLE ARE EXPECTED TO DRESS A CERTAIN WAY IN THE PHILIPPINES. I WENT TO SCHOOL HERE IN THE US AND NOBODY CARED WHAT YOU WORE TO SCHOOL BOTH COLLEGE AND LAW SCHOOL. WHEN I WAS IN LAW SCHOOL, I FREQUENTLY WENT TO SCHOOL IN JUST A T-SHIRT AND SHORTS. I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S SUCH A BIG DEAL IN THE PHILIPPINES:eek:  I KNOW THAT IN LAW SCHOOL IN THE PHILIPPINES YOU HAVE TO BE IN A BUSINESS SUIT OR BARONG TAGALOG.

i agree with LordVideoGame. here in the states, they don't care about what you wear. minsan nga, pumasok ako in my old t-shirt, pajamas, and sneakers. ghetto diba? pero ok pa rin...my friends are still talking to me and hindi nila ako kinakahiya...unlike in the philippines, you are uuber conscious about the way you look and still some people are laughing at you.

it depends on where you really go to college. here in the college where i go to, kahit ano basta hindi hubad...yun lang.

But yeah that's true. People have to be more conscious about what they wear because teachers and administrators also kind of want it. Like for instance in Ateneo, there's no dress code but there are some professors who implement it in their class. Tapos sa Ateneo Law School, they have to dress up talaga. I guess training? Pero I believe it's all a matter of the professors just don't want to see the students dress up "like slobs".

Frankly back in college in Ateneo, my brother (who went to DLSU where there's a "dress code") always gave me a hard time about the clothes I wore when I go to school. Because I sometimes went to school in a shirt, shorts and sandals. Or substitute shorts with jeans.

There was also this one time I think 4 or 5 years ago when I was still a sophomore in college. There was a debate/discussion between the students and the administration about the implementation of a dress code. Let me tell you, if the students could have started a riot because of this, they would have! Because the truth is, in Ateneo, there are very few people who go to school wearing really dressed-up clothes. Most of them really wore pambahay and that's what the administration wanted less of.

Well apparently the administration had to give in to the students and no schoolwide dress code was implemented.

twistedchick: hawaiiana808 is right. 2-3 weeks porma ang mga freshie pero after that, hassle na ang isipin kung anong susuotin coz you're gonna be too busy thinking about school than dressing up.

i'll be shopping for school clothes and i want to go over to divisoria and greenhills to get a lot of stuff for a reasonable price.

since it'll be my first time in divisoria nad i'm not much of a fan of greenhills, can you give me suggestions as to how i should go about my shopping trip/ how much money i should bring, where to shop, good stores, etc.

i'll be needing accesories, nice jeans, basic tops, polos, spag straps, sleeveless tops, denim and khaki skirts, slacks and capris, nice tops, jackets, pati shoes and bags. basically, the works talga. heavy shooping.

i don't want to look tacky and divisoria has always had a tacky impression on me and i want to chnge that since i'm traying to save. greenhills naman parang ang laki sobra. so san ok yung clothes na hindi tacky tignan? and ok yung quality? yung papasa pa rin for classy and classic clothes?

thanks ulit!

twistedchick: You know, dear, we can say all we can say about how to dress up for college. But really in the end it's all up to you. It's all up to how you decide what to wear. Whether it's good enough for you. When you pick up a shirt or a skirt or a pair of jeans, ask yourself, "Will I be happy wearing this?"

In the end, it's all up to you. You can ask everything but you're the only one who can make the decision.

so if i were you, a white t-shirt will be on the top of my list. good luck sayo!

It's be more helpful to consider basic fashion advice than just buying whatever - you need to feel ok with what you wear, and it really helps you feel more comfortable. For college, I bought the very basics and just added accessories or tops that suited the trend. If you buy entire outfits they might end up out of date, so invest in classic looks. so here's what I think you should consider buying:

Tops:
Buy a set of tops that can last you about two weeks or more without repeating them...they'll last longer than if you just recycle a few. Here's a couple of suggestions.

Crisp white poplin shirt/button-down polo shirt - if you go to a school with a/c long sleeves are ok...just roll them up. If no a/c you could try short sleeves or capri sleeves. Get one with a basic folding collar, no extra frills/decorations, it goes with everything from casual to semi-formal. You can get basic colors - I had navy and white.

Several tanks, assorted solid colors or patterns. If there's a dresscode (no tanktops) try a structured sleeveless shell (no collars). Get some that match your body type and match MOST of the pants you buy (sabrina-cut necklines flatter people who want wider shoulders). The most flattering tops should come to just above your hips - unless you want to bare your back or belly. Look at XOXO's selection of tops. http://xoxo.com/

Basic small shirts - Don't get just plain roundneck tees...try fitted t-shirts, v-neck, or with cute logos...i don't like baggy t-shirts, they look sloppy and get dirty faster than a neat baby tee.

Basic Pants

Slim bootleg cut dark denim - most versatile pair of jeans you'll buy. Fits going out or casual, sneakers or heels. You can get several pairs of jeans in different styles. Hipsters are out, and regular-cut jeans are a better idea. Get a straight-cut comfortable style if you want a different look. Nothing too baggy.

Khakis - if you're shorter get darker bone or beige colors. White looks bad on petite women - unless you're very very skinny.

Black bootleg slacks - go with everything and you might need them for a presentation or such.

I avoid weird colors and patterns with pants, but ones i've seen as classic staples include light bluish-grey bootcut pants and black pinstripe suit pants (like Mango's)

Accessories

Bags
Stick with simple and classic rather than plain or funky - they mix well with everything. A good watch (don't skimp on one), earrings ought to do. Add a bracelet or necklace in gold or silver if you want.

Moms always say - spend your money on your bag, belt and shoes (BBS) - because they wear down faster than your other clothes. Get a basic black belt (for your jeans) with a non-fading metal buckle, and a few bags (doesn't hurt to have a few so you can launder them when they get dirty) I usually have at least four different bags, nothing too fancy - they last longer than if I had just one or two. Either stick with a plain backpack, or if you dislike that get a large roomy tote with room enough for papers and books. You could also have just a purse and a bookbag. I find it more convenient, since if one gets lost at least you don't lose everything.

Shoes
Mix it up a bit - sneakers, sandals, a bit of heel for special occasions (no stilettos!) mules, Mary Janes (often with a wedge heel or stacked heel) or plain strappy wedges, Birks, whatnot.. Get basic colors - black, light brown, wood-finish (in the case of clogs like Candie's) If you know how to walk in comfortable heels all the better...

A tip - Philippine shoes tend to be flimsy and break down easily (lack of quality control) in comparison to those exported to the U.S., so I'd stick to imports.

Since there's no winter you'll have an easy time finding stuff to wear than a lot of people :)

hi! try going to divi-mall in divisoria. i bought a pair of jeans there last december for only 220 pesos. go there early and leave early... preferably go on a weekday. try to go to quiapo if you are really a bargain hunter which is more convinient since you only need to ride the LRT. bought a pair of curdoroy pants for only 220 pesos as well. lots of accessories on sale too.

Every wardrobe should have the basic white T-shirt (i have about 3 of these), bench has this by the way. and they are comfy too.

jeans - don't get the ones with so many designs on the legs as people tend to remember them...

shoes - white sneakers for the summer, ankle boots for the rainy season, a pair or two of sandals

jacket - beige and black, get the one that looks like a blazer... try giordano or bossini. also one jacket with a hood.

plain white polo shirt and tank tops - you could interchange these.

accessories - beaded necklaces, bracelets, some belts and earrings could go a long way.

bags - don't get too much of these, may 2 for every season is more than enough. it's quite hard to switch bags every now and then, you may forget important stuff like ID's when transferring your things....

for your everyday wear, ateneans wouldn't really care much about your wardrobe.

it will always boil down to what you think suits you, and what you are comfortable wearing.

i used to go to class with a plain shirt, jeans, and a pair of islanders.

i agree there's lots of nice stuff in divi, greenhills, tutuban. but i think it's better to buy a few pieces at the start, then every week get one or two pieces from the mall, in that way you're not so pressured to get something, ANYTHING, and end up not really using that piece. go for quality and value not only quantity. or buy in color groups so it's easier to coordinate. i try to buy one nice piece every month, so my stuff is constantly being updated.

one last thing: dressing up should be fun! :-)

i remember wearing my spartan looking tsinelas while i was a freshman after hard rain ruined my good shoes.

all my blockmates were like "oh my god jaczie why are you wearing slippers" or "wow laki gn bahay natin dude!"

in a few years most of my classmates are wearing slippers to school too, until that DAMNED SOM RULE.
