Parehong napanood nina Ara Mina at Jomari Yllana ang kani-kanilang interview sa Startalk at S Files respectively at iniyakan nila pareho ang kanilang mga ipinahayag. Iniyakan ni Ara ang sinabi ni Jomari na walang araw na hindi siya nito minahal. Sagot ito ng actor sa tanong ni Joey Marquez kung minahal niya si Ara.

Batay sa interview sa dalawa’y mahal pa nila ang isa’t isa kaya, kahit sinabi ni Jomari na wala nang balikang mangyayari sa kanila’y posible pa ring mamayani ang pag-ibig nila sa isa’t isa.

Sa interview pa rin kay Jomari, nababawan ang viewers sa sinabi nitong rason ng kanilang paghihiwalay: Na nagising siyang lumalaki na ang anak nila ni Aiko Melendez na si Andrei at kailangan ng kanyang pagkalinga. Mas pinaniwalaan nilang selos ang dahilan lalo’t inamin nitong nagselos siya nang makita si Ara na may kasamang ibang guy sa isang bar sa Makati City.

Napansin namin na kung si Jomari ay malayang binanggit ng ilang beses ang name ni Ara sa kanyang interview, ang actress nama’y iniwasang pangalanan ang actor nang mag-promote ng Minsan Pa sa SOP. Nang inisa-isa na ang mga kasama sa pelikula’y, wala si Jomari. Sina Ogie Alcasid at Janno Gibbs na lang ang nagbanggit ng pangalan nito.



Ang kissing scene nila ni Jay Manalo ang agad inurirat ng press na nag-interview kay Dennis Trillo sa presscon ng Aishite Imasu. Tinanong si Dennis kung ano ang feeling makipag-halikan sa kapwa lalake?

There’s no doubt that the love affair of Ichiru, the high ranking Japanese military man played by Jay Manalo, and Ignacio, the provincial gay man portrayed by Dennis Trillo in BAS Film’s "Aishite Masu (Mahal Kita) 1941" will be talked about.


Directed by Joel Lamangan from the script of Ricky Lee, the film which tackles the plight of a provincial town during the Japanese invasion, has Jay Manalo’s character falling in love with a beautiful Filipina. Unknown to him though, the "Filipina" was Ignacio, a transvestite. Though Ignacio has also fallen for him, things get complicated when Ignacio was forced to be a spy by the Filipino guerillas. But what spices their World War II romance is their intimacy even after Ichiru discovers the love of his life is also another man.

According to Jay Manalo, their three kissing scenes are rated from first being tender, then torrid and finally culminating in a bed scene. The build-up of passion between the two in the movie is a natural process according to the actor. He relates it to any relationship that has only started. "Of course you move gradually in any relationship. May first base, second, third, then a home run," he said.

Though the film was turned down by other young actors like Patrick Garcia and Onemig Bondoc because of the man-to-man kissing scenes, Jay never had second thoughts when he accepted the project. In his stature as an actor he does not concern himself anymore with what people will say about his role or even his sexuality after the film. For him Ichiru is yet another very challenging assignment.

"What I was more concerned about was the story and that I do my job very well. Of course I prepared myself mentally. Ako kasi kung ano ang character ko sa set yun ako. Iniiwan ko si Jay Manalo sa bahay," he explained.

He added that he was already prepared a long time ago when the project was still tentatively titled "Erlinda Marikit." He already knew about his role’s requirements and he was already psyched up when "Aishite Masu" began shooting.

"If you were in my and Dennis’ situation, tapos maririnig mo ang boses ni direk Joel, gagawin mo lahat kahit labag sa kalooban mo," Jay kidded when asked what motivated them. "Kailangan ko ring maramdaman na isa akong Hapon na gustong-gusto ang ginagawa."

With regards to his co-actor and onscreen lover Dennis Trillo, he said they talked about their scenes and how’d they go about it.

"Dennis was telling me that he was worried that his girlfriend might think otherwise of him. Sabi ko nga trabaho lang. I gave him encouragement."

Jay sees Dennis’ character as more challenging compared to his. It was not because he was a transvestite but because he was the conduit to all the main characters in the film.

"He was very lucky to get his role. Napakalalim. Gusto ko yung role niya. He is connected to everyone and everything that would happen in the movie," related Jay.

How many actors who are relatively new in the movie business will take a big risk playing a transvestite?

Not very many. In fact, no actor in his right mind will put his career in a precarious position by playing a role traditionally played by comedians. But when a newcomer, like Dennis Trillo, agrees to put on wig, makeup, and women’s clothing, it becomes a big media event.

Trillo’s decision to play against type (he is one of television’s budding matinee idols) has stirred a hornet’s nest, so to speak. Not a few asked if he’s gay. To that the actor simply smiles and, like Keanu Reeves, vehemently denies he is, yet saying he’s got nothing against homosexuals.

For many serious movie buffs, they find Trillo the most daring of actors his age. And he’s suddenly earned the admiration of the thousands of gay men for becoming the first straight young actor in the local movie industry to play a full-length gay role in a dramatic movie.

Yet, the young actor had no qualms about kissing another male actor (Jay Manalo) in the mouth in a scene in the upcoming Metro Manila Film Festival entry Aishite Imasu (Mahal Kita) 1941. He admitted the idea was a bit unsettling for him. He says, “I spent a couple of sleepless nights thinking about it and asking myself, ‘Would it be worth all the risk?’ In the end, I told myself, opportunities to play something like this in a movie directed by Joel Lamangan don’t come my way every day. In fact, this is my first movie.”

Trillo is also in another Lamangan film for the festival , Mano Po 3, as the suitor of rumored offscreen sweetheart Angel Locsin.

“That should put a balance to my newfound acting career. In one movie I play a cross-dressing gay man. In another a young man passionately in love with his girlfriend.

Interestingly, Trillo is getting all the media hype for Aishite Imasu (Mahal Kita) 1941, more than the movie’s lead stars, Judy Ann Santos and Raymart Santiago.

It is understandable because Trillo’s role is the more interesting among the major characters, plus the fact that while the actor has no film experience he has become very popular along with the rest of the lead cast of the top-rating TV series Mulawin on GMA.

To a lot of children who follow the adventures of Aguiluz and Alwina, Trillo is merely Gabriel, the human who is painfully in love with an avian. While on the TV series he wears no exotic costume and has no aerial fighting sequences, his presence seems to be the inevitable third side for a love triangle of the series.

But it is his role as the effeminate man who trades his male outfits for the more elaborate women’s clothing in order to be of service to his country under Japanese occupation during the Second World War in the Pacific that is giving him the jitters. No, he’s no longer queasy about getting the stigma of the gay role. He is not quite sure how the movie audiences would accept him as a serious actor. (Yes, he plays his gay role as a character, not as a caricature of homosexual.)

Lamangan has praises for Trillo’s performance in the movie. “He is a very sensitive actor, he will go far if he takes his craft seriously,” the director says. “After working with him in the miniseries about the life of Manila Mayor Lito Atienza—he played the young Atienza —I had no doubt about him playing the role of the transvestite in then still-in-the-pre-production-stage Aishite Imasu. He’s got a versatile face. His good looks are not a liability for him. He is able to use it to his advantage.”

Among actors his age (he’s only 24), Trillo’s touted to be the most promising. “While his following may not be huge yet, it is growing steadily,” says a GMA production executive. “In due time, he’s going to be a very big star.”

Trillo doesn’t believe he’s going to be any bigger than what he is now in show business. “I don’t sing (although he isn’t tone deaf like most young male stars who make a career out of singing off key), and I don’t dance (he certainly can if only he does away with his bashfulness), also I’m not’ controversial (he’s just too good to be true),” he tells you.

Trillo’s type doesn’t land tabloid gossip columns, unless movie scribes twist facts and turn them to gossip.

Recently, he’s become tabloid fodder for his supposedly abortive romantic liaison with Mulawin co-star Angel Locsin, and his butt-baring scene and mouth-to-mouth contact with Jay Manalo in Aishite Masu. While it is generating the media mileage that any star would be happy to have, Trillo’s simply not making a big fuss. If at all, he’s just happy that he is contributing to the promotion of the movie. “I’m not the star of the movie, I’m only playing a minor role that happens to be interesting to the press.

Manalo, Trillo’s co-star in the Japanese-occupation drama, says, “If you look closely, the film is really about (the character) Trillo (plays). Which among the character in the movie threads the story? I think it’s Dennis’!”

Aishite Imasu cements Dennis Trillo’s talent as an actor. Everyone who has been following him and his career on TV is looking forward to watching him on the big screen. Dennis is visibly amused as he declares, “Now I can finally say I am an artista.”

Nasa pelikulang Sigaw si James at si Dennis naman ay tapos na ang shooting ng pelikulang Aishite Imasu: (Mahal Kita) 1941 at tuluy-tuloy naman ang shooting para sa Mano Po 3 (My Love) ni Vilma Santos.

Kaya tuwang-tuwa ang manager ng dalawa na si Popoy C nang pumayag si Mother Lily na gawin ng dalawang alaga ang digital film na ito.

"At least, magandang pandagdag sa credentials nina James at Dennis ang digital movie na kanilang gagawin, ‘noh?" say ni Popoy.

Isang pulis ang gagampanan ni Dennis at isang magnanakaw na kanyang hinuli ang role ni James. Ayon kay Popoy, mga estudyante ang gagawa ng movie at napapayag siyang gawin ito kahit hindi kalakihan ang talent fee nina Dennis at James.

Ang dating talent ng ABS-CBN’s Star Magic na si Dennis Trillo ay unti-unting nang namamayagpag ngayon sa GMA.

Kabilang si Dennis sa number one ngayong fantaserye na Mulawin at dala-dalawa ang kanyang pelikulang kasali sa Metro Manila Film Festival, ang Mano Po 3 at ang period movie (Japanese time) na Aishite Imasu 1941. Ang dalawang nasabing pelikula ay parehong si Joel Lamangan ang direktor.

Si Direk Joel mismo ang pumili kay Dennis na mapasama sa Mano Po 3 at Aishite Imasu dahil mahusay itong umarte.

"He’s a very good actor. Nagulat ako sa husay niya," pagmamalaki pa ni Direk Joel.

Sa part naman ni Dennis, isang malaking karangalan para sa kanya ang mapuri ng award-winning director tulad ni Joel Lamangan at lalo pang malaking karangalan para sa kanya ang mapasama sa dalawang magkaibang pelikula na parehong pasok sa MMFF.

"First two movies ko po ang Mano Po 3 at Aishite Imasu kaya very memorable ito sa akin lalo pa’t kasama ko sa movie ang mga artistang hinahangaan ko," proud niyang sinabi.

Sa Mano Po 3, kasama ni Dennis sina Vilma Santos at Christopher de Leon. Habang sa Aishite Imasu 1941 ay sina Judy Ann Santos at Raymart Santiago.

i liked it when dennis received his award and he thanked his family, siblings and his girlfriend CARLENE. he didnt say "my girlfriend. " he said carlene's name in the context of FAMILY.

i know it will be heartbreaking for many of you to discover that miriam college's abelardo dennis ho (a college graduate--how many movie stars would finish degrees?) is very faithful to his GF, UP student Carlene Aguiliar.

This only goes to show that Dennis is a rare showbiz artist because he has a sense of fidelity/loyalty, responsibility and honesty.

many actors leap from one partner to another. dennis has his eyes only for carlene.

And the winner is...

You could never have guessed it.

No, the winner for the Best Supporting Actor award during the just-concluded 2004 Metro Filmfest was not one of the veterans but a newcomer (not to be confused with a "greenhorn") who never thought he stood a chance against his worthy opponents (just like how Best Supporting Actress winner Rebecca Lusterio, another newcomer, for Panaghoy sa Suba, felt).

Dennis Trillo, 22, (who won for his role as a cross-dresser in the war drama Aishite Imasu 1941, only his first movie; another Metro Filmfest entry, Mano Po 3: My Love, where he plays a small role, is his second) is a winner in more ways than one.

"Things have been happening so fast," said the wholesome dude aptly described as "silent water runs deep" because he’s so quiet and sometimes so stingy with words that you wonder how he could be so effective in his winning role. "I still couldn’t believe that all these things are happening to me, all these blessings," he added. "I pinch myself and ask, ‘Totoo ba ’to?’ God is good."

A member of the ABS-CBN Talent Center’s Star Circle Batch 10 (along with, among nine others, Bea Alonzo and Alfred Vargas), Dennis for a while languished in guest TV roles and made heads turn only after he was cast as Gabriel, childhood friend of Alwina (played by Angel Locsin), in the top-rated GMA fantaserye Mulawin (with Richard Gutierrez in the title role).

Things seemed to come easy for Dennis after that.

Born Abelardo Dennis Florencio Ho, he comes from a well-to-do family (his father is half-Chinese). He never dreamed of landing in showbiz, aiming only for a job perhaps at the Department of Foreign Service or abroad. That’s why he took up International Studies.

"It’s fate," said Dennis.

Like his landing the "comfort gay" role in Aishite Imasu, a no-no role as far as other (less gifted? less secure?) actors are concerned because they worry that such roles could mean the end of their careers. An unfounded fear, actually. In Hollywood, the likes of Johnny Depp (Before Night Falls) and Tom Hanks (Philadelphia) tackle such "risky" roles with no qualms and became even more versatile thespians.

"I am secure with myself," said Dennis. "If I want to be a good actor, then I should try everything."

How did you feel the morning after the Gabi ng Parangal?

"Overwhelmed. Sobrang thrilled siempre. Honestly, I didn’t expect any award. I was already happy reading and hearing good reviews."

But you were a favorite, predicted to be "it" right at the start of the Metro Filmfest.

"I was hoping but not really expecting."

Who did you think would win?

"Jay Manalo (also for Aishite Imasu where he played a Japanese officer)."

You were convincing and credible in your role as a "comfort gay," considering the fact that you are straight. How did you do it? How did you prepare for it?

"I watched movies na may ganoong theme, like Before Night Falls (where Johnny Depp played a cross-dresser) and Too Wong Foo. I also observed how women moved and acted because my character believed that he’s a woman and not gay."

When you learned that you were going to play a gay, how did you react? Other actors stay away from such roles because they are afraid gay roles might "stigmatize" them.

"At first, I must admit I was a bit apprehensive. But I thought it was a role of a lifetime kaya sayang naman kung palalampasin mo. I might regret it later on. Besides, I wasn’t afraid to be typecast. You see it once only in a movie, unlike if you do it on TV every day na talagang magma-marka sa isip ng tao."

It’s good that you’re secure with your sexuality.

"Of course, I am!"

How did you feel during your love (kissing) scene with Jay (as his lover)?

"It was hyped up talaga. Actually, my love scene with Jay was cut short; mahaba talaga ’yon. I think the whole scene will be included when the movie is released on DVD. That scene was shot during the last shooting day. Lahat ng nervousness ko naipon and I was tense. There were a lot of press people watching the scene on the monitor and I became nervous all the more."

Was it the first time you ever kissed another guy?

"On screen? Yeah, the first. But I did a ‘lip-smack’ scene for an episode on Magpakailanman (about Diego Lorrico, the gay comedian in Bubble Gang). It was my first time to kiss another guy on the lips. Mas grabe ‘yung amin ni Jay."

Being the more experienced, Jay, I suppose, guided you well during the shooting of that scene.

"Direk Joel (Lamangan) told me that I should feel like a woman. Direk was good at motivating."

How did you prepare for your kissing scene with Jay?

"I brushed and flossed my teeth and I gargled Listerine."

Did you request Jay to do the same?

"Nakakahiya naman if I asked him, di ba? Siempre, Jay Manalo ’yan, ano! I was starstruck by him."

Did you have any acting experience before you joined showbiz?

"Hardly. But I did a few commercials (Globe, Jollibee, Close-Up, etc.). I was in Grade Six at Ateneo (where he also finished high school) when I started making commercials during summer breaks."

Didn’t you join any acting group in Ateneo (like Tanghalang Ateneo)?

"No, I didn’t. Sayang nga, e. I should have. Maganda ang discipline sa theater sabi nila. That’s what I want to explore later on – theater."

You shot Aishite Imasu and Mano Po 3 at the same time...

"...Yeah, I did. That was hectic because I was also taping for Mulawin."

You don’t play a winged creature in Mulawin...

"...eventually, I will. Soon."

Mulawin is not your first TV show, is it?

"In ABS-CBN, I did a few ‘guestings.’ When my contract with ABS-CBN expired, I got myself a manager (Popoy Karitativa) who got me into GMA. I was cast in the soap Kahit Kailan and then Mulawin."

How did you get into Star Circle?

"When I was doing commercials, I had an agent who happened to be the manager of Ryan Agoncillo. He showed my pictures to the guys at ABS-CBN and I was asked to audition. I was then taking up International Studies at Miriam College."

Have you ever dreamed of becoming an actor?

"No. My dad being Chinese... parang di okay sa kanya ’yung idea."

Do you speak Chinese?

"No, I don’t. But my dad does, a little bit."

You’re not related to the Trillos in sports, are you?

"I’m not sure if I am. Trillo is my mom’s maiden name."

What kind of family do you come from, a well-to-do family?

"Well, modesty aside, I can say that. We have our own businesses, such as carpet-manufacturing and making Vulca Seal. I’m the eldest among three children; I have two sisters."

Still living with your family?

"Yes, in Marikina."

Now that you’re earning well, don’t you plan to live independently?

"Eventually, I think I will. But in the meantime, it’s practical for me to stay with my family. But I do plan to rent a pad as my halfway place because Marikina is a bit far from where I usually work."

What kind of childhood did you have?

"It was a perfect childhood. ‘Yung family ko is sobrang perfect at wala ka nang hihingin o hahanapin pa. We are a regular family. We travel together, we hear Mass together on Sunday, we eat out every now and then, except that these days, since I’m busy, I can’t always go out with them. Sobrang tight ang family bonding namin."

Having come from a happy family, how do you "internalize" for a sad scene?

"Honestly, I find it hard to do sad or crying scenes. But a good director can always give you the right motivation. Actually, tsamba lang ’yung ibang scenes ko in Aishite Imasu where I had to cry. Direk Joel should get the credit for that."

Are you a movie buff?

"Oh, yes, I am. Mahilig na mahilig. I prefer classic movies, like those of Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson and Al Pacino. I just don’t enjoy watching them, I learn by observing them. I also like reading biographies of actors."

Have you taken up any acting lessons?

"In ABS-CBN, I did – during the Star Circle days. I also enrolled in the Acting Workshop Foundation of Leo Martinez."

Vilma Santos, your Mano Po 3 co-star, recalled that she noticed you to be so shy during a shoot in Beijing that she had to embrace you and encourage you to talk.

"I guess until now I haven’t really absorbed the impact of all the good things that have been happening to me."

Have you always been like that, very shy and withdrawn?

"I guess so."

What’s your zodiac sign ba?

"Taurus. May 12."

Are you also shy with girls?

"Not all the time."

Do you have a girlfriend?

"Now? None. Before, yes."

What do you do during your spare time?

"Stay home. I’m really a homebody. Luckily, everything that I love to do is found at home, such as a home theater. Lahat nang gusto kong gawin nasa bahay na namin. I spend a lot of time in my home theater and on my collection of DVDs."

Are you generous with your sisters?

"Oh, yes, I am."

Since your family doesn’t need any financial help from you, what do you do with your earnings?

"I save. Sometimes, I do volunteer to contribute to the household expenses. Or I give my parents and my sisters balato."

Don’t you have any barkada?

"I have, mostly non-showbiz. But they’re also busy with their work so we hardly have time to go out."

Your role in Aishite Imasu is markado. Your next should be even more so since, after your award, people will be expecting much from you. Natsa-challenge ka ba?

"Of course, I am. Sana my next role will be as good, if not better."

More gay roles maybe?

"Siguro I won’t be doing any gay roles na muna. Iba naman. Maybe a bad-boy role."

Opposite of what you are in real life?

"Yeah, the exact opposite."

How much of a good boy are you?

"Well, I’m God-fearing."

An angel?

"Not exactly. Siempre mayroon din akong kalokohan, just like any boy my age. But I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, I don’t take drugs. I’m clean-living."

So anong kaligayahan mo sa buhay?

"I really want to improve my craft to make my family proud of me. Marami pa akong gustong patunayan sa sarili ko."

Aside from those you have mentioned, who are your role models?

"Christopher de Leon. Joel Torre. Sayang I didn’t have a scene with Christopher in Mano Po 3. I also admire Jay Manalo."

What did you learn from Jay aside from kissing another man?

"Jay is a dedicated actor. He’s focused; he’s a consistent actor. He taught me the right blocking, guiding me to the right markers. Even during the shooting, Jay would gently push me to the right marker."

Where did you put your trophy?

"In my room. I keep looking at it."

Hasn’t all this gone to your head?

"Not at all. For me, this is just a job that I have to do well. I don’t want showbiz to affect what I’ve always loved to do, like going to the mall na naka-sandals or naka-slippers lang. Showbiz is not forever, so why let it go to your head?"

I saw Dennis Trillo at the Domestic Airport last October! I'm going to boracay that time and me and my friends were all hoping that he'll also go in boracay so that we will be on the same plane! Me and my friends we're all shocked because he's really cute in person and he looks nice! :) When waiting for the flight, he was sleeping and I took a pic of him! heheehhe! Don't worry I'll post it here... Then there was a last call for those going to bacolod... then he stood up and lined up! we were all devasted because he will not be on the same plane as ours! :(

Post po ulit ako. Actually i don't admire an actor or actress kung wala pa *** napatunayan. i did find him gwapo and that was it. But when he was cast in Mulawin dun na ako na smitten sa acting niya. He's really good even much more better than Richard Gutierrez.

His first movie and then comes the first award. How many young actors in the industry can match that feat. Not even Jericho Rosales. Well his a good actor but Dennis with his ist movie and a role to portray a gay persona is very brave of him indeed. And now his move to do it has made him an Actor. A real actor with no qualms or anything. Mabait pa na tao at take note may college diploma. How good life could be for Dennis. He's blessed. Ang mababait na tao ay pinagpala ni Lord.

Yup I agree!! He was really good in "Aishite Imasu 1941". Na-impressed ako sa kanya. Kuhang-kuha niya un character, ang ganda rin niyang maging babae. Ganda nga ng performance nila ni Jay Manalo. I've seen him before on TV, pero napansin ko siya talga nun nakita ko un "Mano Po 3" pictorial nila sa 1 newspaper, ang gwapo niya dun!

I also agree that he should be nominated in the Best Actor category, but still, winning a Best Supporting Actor award is no small feat for a newcomer, kaya OK narin =))

I hope he'll have more movie offers and more challenging roles will come his way...malaki potential niya para sumikat lalo...

Tinsel town’s flavor of the month

Exactly a year ago, a handsome face greeted TV audiences nationwide via a commercial for an ATM service of a bank. That guy did not even think that commercial would be his ticket to fame and fortune.

The young commercial model was Dennis Ho, now more popularly known by his screen name Dennis Trillo.

Suddenly, he’s hot, sizzling, as one inveterate fan would like to put it. No other young actor with no experience in acting for the movies has been so lucky to land starring roles in the film festival’s two most important movies—Mano Po 3: My Love and Aish*te Imasu 1941—both directed by one of the local movie industry’s most decorated filmmakers, Joel Lamangan.

His popularity seems to have been inevitable. And ABS-CBN Talent Center failed to sense it, releasing him from Star Circle (batch 10) after a year of being frozen along with the others. Even GMA, seems slow in cashing in on his growing popularity, keeping his character in the fantasy series Mulawin underdeveloped (I have a feeling that’s deliberate—he isn’t under contract with GMA Talent Center—for fear that if his Gabriel character becomes rounded, he might eclipse Richard Gutierrez’ Aguiluz, which is supposed to be the lead male character).


Best Actor?

Yet, Dennis gets vindicated as he is now being lavished with praises for his daring role as a transvestite in Aish*te Imasu 1941, prompting the producers to accord him an above-the-title-billing usually reserved for bigger and more established stars. In fact, many are predicting he will be one of the top contenders for either the Best Actor or Best Supporting Actor award in the MMFF awards night on Dec. 29.

The soft-spoken and very modest young man just couldn’t believe his good fortunes. "When we were in Beijing, China for the publicity shoot for Mano Po 3 I was really star-struck. I thought I was dreaming, because it never occurred to me that I’d be in the same place as Vilma Santos, Christopher de Leon, Eddie Garcia, Boots Anson-Roa, and many others. I’ve admired these actors even when I was a kid, and now I’m in a movie with them. Isn’t that great? At one point Mayor Vilma Santos came up to me and asked me, ‘Bakit wala kang kibo (Why do you seem to be very detached)?’ I didn’t know what to say, so I said, ‘Ako po si Dennis (I’m Dennis).’ To which she answered, ‘Alam ko (I know)!’ I was really very embarrassed.”

In Mano Po 3, Dennis plays Stephen who is pursuing Eliza Yang (Angel Locsin), daughter of businesswoman Lilia Chiong Yang (Vilma Santos). Stephen and Lilia’s paths cross when business rivals of the Chinese businesswoman try to bring her down.

Dennis plays a small role, but it is a pivotal one in one of many plot points in the movie. The brevity of the role, notwithstanding, Dennis looked at it as a challenge to him as an actor.

“Like most Filipinos, I’m more than half-Chinese,” reveals Dennis, “but I still had some trouble delivering the Chinese dialogue. I am very thankful for the patience of our Chinese dialect coach.”

Gay or straight?

What has most tongues wagging, however, is Dennis’ other film festival entry, the Japanese war drama Aish*te Imasu (Mahal Kita) 1941, where he plays a transvestite who becomes involved in a love affair with a high-ranking Japanese soldier played by Jay Manalo.

The day after the film’s press conference, tabloids and broadsheets were filled with bits about Dennis and Jay’s kissing scene. For the record, Dennis insists that he and Jay are both straight men. “Jay Manalo is the first man I’ve ever kissed,” Trillo says in his whisper-like voice.

Surprisingly, Dennis says he is not closing the doors for similar roles in the future. “I enjoy doing offbeat roles,” he admits. “Johnny Depp is a favorite actor. He played a transvestite twice, in Ed Wood and Before Night Falls. Yet, nobody says he’s gay, and it didn’t affect his career.” (Johnny Depp is in the running for this year’s Oscar Best Actor for his role in Finding Neverland.)

It’s a credit to Dennis’ acting ability that he so convincingly portrays a gay man in Aish*te Imasu that those who have seen the film can’t help but think that a part of him really enjoyed kissing another man. “Sorry to disappoint you, but it’s really just acting,” says the young actor.

And what about those two heartbreaking scenes in the movie where a perfectly-timed tear streams down Dennis’ face just as he’s kissed by the only two men he’s ever loved? What did Dennis think about to make him cry so sincerely on cue? “I was thinking I’d be dammed by Joel Lamangan if I couldn’t cry,” replies the secretive heartthrob, obviously wary of revealing all his secrets as an actor.

Whatever his method or technique is, you can be sure aspiring young actors everywhere will want to know how he accomplished what he did in Aish*te Imasu 1941. And what exactly did Dennis Trillo do? He pulled off with marvelous ease what is quite possibly the most challenging, complex role in a major film ever to be given to a debuting movie actor. And that’s an achievement that doesn’t happen every day, or even every year.

A big leap forward

How many actors who are relatively new in the movie business will take a big risk playing a transvestite?

Not very many. In fact, no actor in his right mind will put his career in a precarious position by playing a role traditionally played by comedians. But when a newcomer, like Dennis Trillo, agrees to put on wig, makeup, and women's clothing, it becomes a big media event.

Trillo's decision to play against type (he is one of television's budding matinee idols) has stirred a hornet's nest, so to speak. Not a few asked if he's gay. To that the actor simply smiles and, like Keanu Reeves, vehemently denies he is, yet saying he's got nothing against homosexuals.

For many serious movie buffs, they find Trillo the most daring of actors his age. And he's suddenly earned the admiration of the thousands of gay men for becoming the first straight young actor in the local movie industry to play a full-length gay role in a dramatic movie.

Yet, the young actor had no qualms about kissing another male actor (Jay Manalo) in the mouth in a scene in the upcoming Metro Manila Film Festival entry Aish*te Imasu (Mahal Kita) 1941. He admitted the idea was a bit unsettling for him. He says, "I spent a couple of sleepless nights thinking about it and asking myself, `Would it be worth all the risk?' In the end, I told myself, opportunities to play something like this in a movie directed by Joel Lamangan don't come my way every day. In fact, this is my first movie."

Trillo is also in another Lamangan film for the festival , Mano Po 3, as the suitor of rumored offscreen sweetheart Angel Locsin.

"That should put a balance to my newfound acting career. In one movie I play a cross-dressing gay man. In another a young man passionately in love with his girlfriend.

Interestingly, Trillo is getting all the media hype for Aish*te Imasu (Mahal Kita) 1941, more than the movie's lead stars, Judy Ann Santos and Raymart Santiago.

It is understandable because Trillo's role is the more interesting among the major characters, plus the fact that while the actor has no film experience he has become very popular along with the rest of the lead cast of the top-rating TV series Mulawin on GMA.

To a lot of children who follow the adventures of Aguiluz and Alwina, Trillo is merely Gabriel, the human who is painfully in love with an avian. While on the TV series he wears no exotic costume and has no aerial fighting sequences, his presence seems to be the inevitable third side for a love triangle of the series.

But it is his role as the effeminate man who trades his male outfits for the more elaborate women's clothing in order to be of service to his country under Japanese occupation during the Second World War in the Pacific that is giving him the jitters. No, he's no longer queasy about getting the stigma of the gay role. He is not quite sure how the movie audiences would accept him as a serious actor. (Yes, he plays his gay role as a character, not as a caricature of homosexual.)

Lamangan has praises for Trillo's performance in the movie. "He is a very sensitive actor, he will go far if he takes his craft seriously," the director says. "After working with him in the miniseries about the life of Manila Mayor Lito Atienza-he played the young Atienza -I had no doubt about him playing the role of the transvestite in then still-in-the-pre-production-stage Aish*te Imasu. He's got a versatile face. His good looks are not a liability for him. He is able to use it to his advantage."

Among actors his age (he's only 24), Trillo's touted to be the most promising. "While his following may not be huge yet, it is growing steadily," says a GMA production executive. "In due time, he's going to be a very big star."

Trillo doesn't believe he's going to be any bigger than what he is now in show business. "I don't sing (although he isn't tone deaf like most young male stars who make a career out of singing off key), and I don't dance (he certainly can if only he does away with his bashfulness), also I'm not' controversial (he's just too good to be true)," he tells you.

Trillo's type doesn't land tabloid gossip columns, unless movie scribes twist facts and turn them to gossip.

Recently, he's become tabloid fodder for his supposedly abortive romantic liaison with Mulawin co-star Angel Locsin, and his butt-baring scene and mouth-to-mouth contact with Jay Manalo in Aish*te Masu. While it is generating the media mileage that any star would be happy to have, Trillo's simply not making a big fuss. If at all, he's just happy that he is contributing to the promotion of the movie. "I'm not the star of the movie, I'm only playing a minor role that happens to be interesting to the press.

Manalo, Trillo's co-star in the Japanese-occupation drama, says, "If you look closely, the film is really about (the character) Trillo (plays). Which among the character in the movie threads the story? I think it's Dennis'!"

Aish*te Imasu cements Dennis Trillo's talent as an actor. Everyone who has been following him and his career on TV is looking forward to watching him on the big screen. Dennis is visibly amused as he declares, "Now I can finally say I am an artista."

Hindi rin siya pababayaan ng GMA-7 at isasama siya sa isa sa mga bago nilang soap opera. Posible raw sa ipapalit sa Stairway to Heaven mapasama si Dennis dahil one season lang ito tatakbo't 20 episodes lang inabot.

Magtatapos ang Mulawin (by mid-March) na masaya si Dennis dahil natupad ang gustong maging Ravena siya. Mas may challenge para sa actor ang maging bad guy sa tele-fantasy at mapaglalaruan niya ang kanyang role.

Post po ulit ako. Actually i don't admire an actor or actress kung wala pa *** napatunayan. i did find him gwapo and that was it. But when he was cast in Mulawin dun na ako na smitten sa acting niya. He's really good even much more better than Richard Gutierrez.

His first movie and then comes the first award. How many young actors in the industry can match that feat. Not even Jericho Rosales. Well his a good actor but Dennis with his ist movie and a role to portray a gay persona is very brave of him indeed. And now his move to do it has made him an Actor. A real actor with no qualms or anything. Mabait pa na tao at take note may college diploma. How good life could be for Dennis. He's blessed. Ang mababait na tao ay pinagpala ni Lord.

He's done a gay role for his ist movie. that was very brave of him. He did make it on his own without having a loveteam to boost his career.
