View Full Version : MRT and LRT-2...will it work?

The government has big plans for the EDSA-MRT project, which is scheduled to be completed this December. It has suffered a lot of delays and red-tape, but do you think it will be worth it? The same goes with the Aurora LRT-2. Do you think these projects will help ease the already brutal traffic in Metro Manila?

I think we have to hope these projects work. The real solution though is spreading development beyond Metro Manila such as towards the South.

I SURE HOPE SO!!! :) We're spending so much money and it and it's causing so much traffic. I hope it's all worth it!

Actually, I don't really think we'll know until the darn thing is up and running. I will say this, though, for the government's RT project: I'm really waiting. I live in Paranaque, and work is at Ortigas. When the EDSA-MRT is up, and it cuts my travel time from an hour and half to less than twenty minutes tops, I will praise them to high heavens for getting something right.
Does anyone have any idea how much the fare is going to cost? I mean, yeah, I get there in twenty minutes, but will I have to spend like 40 bucks? :\

If the Skyway to the south is any indication, I think that the MRT will drastically cut into our travel times. The South Super Highway isn't as congested as it used to be. But they shouldn't really place all those shops at the bottom of the MRT. It's going to cause massive people traffic there, and that only means, pedestrian traffic for the car riders.

As far as I'm concerned, these thing has already cost us BILLIONS of PESOS. Might as well support it and make it work. If it does'nt, then we are up for a higher tax (where else do you think the gov't will get the returns). Good luck to us!

Mr. Dean,
I've heard that it will be costing around 30 Pesos to get from end to end. I guess it's a small price to pay for speed. :)

i think it will make a big difference w/ regard on the traffic. malaking tulong ito for the commuters as well. mas mabilis ang biyahe.

Thirty pesos?! That's still a lot of money for your common, every day worker! :( Oh well, I can afford it somewhat. Boy. They're really working to get their money back quickly, aren't they?

Nakaktulong talaga ang MRT-3 and LRT-1!!! My trip to my college is VERY CONVIENIENT and FAST because of LRT-1!!! Also, my daily trip to my work has REALLY BEEN SO CONVIENIENT because of MRT-3.
I live in North Metro Manila and am working in the South. MABUTI na lang may LRT-1 at MRT-3 na mapagpililian. THEY REALLY HELP!!! I do not have to live in a hot and humid boarding house because my place of work is so far from my home!!!
Pero SANA, and I REALLY WISH TO PRESIDENT GLORIA ARROYO na MATAPOS na ang MRT-3 ALL THE WAY to MONUMENTO!!! It will REALLY HELP a LOT lalong-lalo na sa mga taga-Camanava-QC tulad ko!!!
I DO NOT HAVE to HAVE A CAR anymore!!! The LRT-1 and MRT-3 are really BETTER in transporation!!!
MABUHAY ang TRANSPORATION ng Metro Manila!!!

I am really VERY HAPPY living a SIMPLE LIFE in NORTH METRO MANILA. Kahit na hindi kasing-ELEGANT, kasing-GLAMOROUS at kasing-ELITISTA ang buhay ko as compared to those living in exclusive villages sa South Metro Manila, at least, NAPAKA-CONVIENIENT naman ang buhay ko because of LRT-1 and MRT-3!!!
I and those from NORTH METRO MANILA can virtually go anywhere in Metro Manila because of LRT-1 and MRT-3!!!
To Diliman, to UP, to Ateneo, to Cubao, to Ortigas, to Rockwell, to Ayala, NAPAKABILIS at NAPAKAGINHAWA ang biyahe namin because of MRT-3!!!
To Tondo, to UST, to Binondo, to Quiapo, to Luneta, to Ermita-Malate, to La Salle, to CCP, to Baclaran, VERY CONVIENIENT at MABILIS rin ang sakay namin because of LRT-1!!!
I don't need TO BRAG on CARS!!! In fact, I DO NOT NEED CARS!!!
GLORIA ARROYO na I-KUMPLETO na sana ang MRT-3 ALL THE WAY TO MONUMENTO!!! It will REALLY HELP A LOT sa mga taga-Camanava tulad ko!!!
But I have heard na there are other rail systems which will REALLY MAKE people from North Metro Manila (and from EAST METRO MANILA too) MORE MOBILE and FLEXIBLE in terms of Transportation.
The LRT-2 will REALLY EASE the traffic situation Eastward from Divisoria to Marikina!!! It is ONE VERY ENJOYABLE RIDE!!!
The MRT-4 sana ay magkatotoo!!! This will start from Quiapo, through UST-Espana, through the entrire Quezon Avenue all the way to UP-Diliman and Fairview, Novaliches Quezon City!!! This is really a BIG HELP!!!
At lalong-lalo na, para maging PROGRESSIVE ang North Metro Manila, sana MAGKATOTOO na ang NORTHRAIL PNR Project from Monumento to Clark Pampanga. From Clark, may easy ride na sa Subic!!!
Kaya many of my friends have encouraged me to move to South because mas maginhawa daw doon kaysa sa North. Pero sa akin, mas MASAYA pang tumira sa NORTH METRO Manila dahil I will never give up CONVIENIENCE, MOBILITY and FLEXIBILITY as well as SIMPLE LIVING to PRESTIGE, GLAMOUR, and FAME of living in famous, exclusive yet VERY HEAVY TRAFFIC-PRONE villages in the South Metro Manila!!!
North Metro Manila pa rin!!! Thanks to the LRTs and the MRTs!!!

pero sobrang papangit sa nagtahan area and aurora blvd... didilim and magiging tambayan ng addicts and snatchers pag gabi... the streets are too narrow to put up a railway overhead. like what's happening under the formerly beautiful and prosperous rizal avenue. The LRT-1 and the MRT-3 REALLY HELPS a lot. From Camanava, I have gone virtually EVERYWHERE in Metro Manila.
In fact, during my college days, NAPAKAGINHAWA ang Biyahe ko!!! Biruin mo, sa Vito Cruz Station, La Salle na!!! The LRT-1 REALlY HELPS a LOT!!!
And the MRT-3 REALLY HELPS! Dati from the North, hanggang Cubao lang ang kaya kong i-biyahe to EDSA!!! Thanks to MRT-3, I can already go as far as Ortigas, and Ayala through a FAST, CONVIENIENT and SAFE MRT-3 RIDE!!!
Pero sana makumpleto ito hanggang Monumento!!! This will really make the lives of Camanava people VERY MUCH BETTER! May LRT-1 na, may MRT-3 pa!!!
In fact, I live in Camanava area and yet my work is in the far South!!! I DO NOT NEED TO LIVE in a VERY HOT, and HUMID Boarding House 5 days a week just because my place of work is very far from my home. MABUTI na lang may LRT-1 and MRT-3 to choose from, from Pasay Rotonda to Monumento!!!
In other words, NAPAKASUWERTE natin na may LRT-1 and MRT-3 na!!! Sana magkatotoo na ang NORTHRAIL from Monumento to Clark, Pampanga!!!

Govt to shoulder construction of P6-B MRT-LRT link
08/26/2008 | 06:18 PM
MANILA, Philippines - Government would be shouldering the P6-billion elevated railway project extending the Metro Rail Transit from the North Avenue in Quezon City to Monumento Grand Central station of the Light Rail Transit Line 1 in Caloocan.
However, instead of an underground electric train system from North Avenue to Monumento as first proposed, government would be constructing an elevated electric train system which it is also cheaper.
This was revealed Monday night by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo during an informal media interaction at the Well Being Spa at Clark Economic Zone in Pampanga.
She said the government's decision to shoulder the cost of the construction was part of efforts to complete the MRT-LRT loop.
The MRT3-LRT Line 1 extension has long been delayed and would continue to be delayed if they wait for a loan to be approved, she said.
To finance the project, Mrs Arroyo said that government would be using proceeds from the Value Added Tax (VAT).
For his part, LRT Authority administration Mel Robles said the government decided to finance the project since they have available funds for it.
He said that it was also better because acquiring a loan for the project would also mean additional interest that the country has to pay.
Edgardo Pamintuan, Super region champion for the Urban Beltway region said they are planning to start the civil or construction works by Sept. 1
He said there were two failed biddings for the "electro-mechanical aspects" of the project or the phase C but it is no problem as they opted to start on the civil works or phase 1 which covers the putting up of viaducts, pedestrian overpasses and foundation.
The DMCI-First Balfour won the biding for the phase A and B of the project which covers the designing and civil works aspect and the designs and train station construction.
Pamintuan said they expect the MRT-LRT extension - which would have at least five stations and span 5.71 kilometers - to be completed and operational by May 2010.

The more trains, the better. This will definitely ease traffic by encouraging more commuters to take the train. Maybe someday the MRT/LRT can even go as far as the provinces.
Train systems should also be built in the Visayas and Mindanao and not just in Metro Manila. Having LRTs would definitely spur development in the provinces.

MRT pushes for fare hike - report
BY SOPHIA DEDACE, GMANews.TV
11/12/2008 | 07:35 PM
MANILA, Philippines – Riders of the Metro Rail Transit (MRT)-3 may have to pay an additional P7.50 to P10 next year if the Transportation and Communication Department (DOTC) approves the MRT management’s fare hike petition.
In her report over 24 Oras, GMA News’ Tricia Zafra quoted MRT officials as saying that the fare increase is needed to remedy the transit’s congestion problem as MRT’s coaches have been overloaded in the past few months.
The MRT, which runs from North Avenue in Quezon City to Taft Avenue in Pasay City, is designed to carry 350,000 passengers daily but it now transports more than 400,000 passengers a day.
MRT General Manager Roberto Lastimoso said they will recommend the fare hike proposal first quarter next year.
Under the petition, the minimum P10 fare for short trips will be increased to P17.50 and the minimum P15 fare for short trips will be hiked to P25.
Lastimoso said the newest petition will be their third recommendation since 2003. He added that when they asked for a fare hike in the previous years, economic managers advised Transportation Secretary Leandro Mendoza to defer the increase amid the an economic slump.
“Meron daw instructions yung economic managers kay Secretary Mendoza na huwag muna (Economic managers advised Secretary Mendoza to defer it). It’s not timely to implement the fare hike because that time there was a slump in our economy, the peso went down," Lastimoso said.
Lastimoso explained that the fare increase could reduce the government’s subsidies to the MRT-3.
Citing figures from the DOTC, the television report said the government could save as much as P1.2 billion as it subsidizes P42 per passenger daily.
The report however said MRT riders are not too keen on the proposed fare hike.
“Kaya nga nag-MRT para makatipid (We ride the MRT to save on transportation costs)," said one passenger.
“Kahit na maraming pasahero, magtititis kami dahil wala kaming pera eh (We don’t have money that’s why we are willing to ride the MRT even if there are a lot of passengers)," said another.
The Light Rail Transit (LRT), for its part, said it will not propose a fare increase.
