Pianists, Pick-Ups and Friendster Parties

An emerging pattern with every excursion Shelah and I decide to take: it rains like heck whenever we step out of our respective houses. Maksim's performance was to be held at 7:30 in the evening, but being the eager groupies that we are, we decided to stomp off to Greenbelt at about 4:00. But before that we had to get ourselves wet in a deluge. It was raining so hard that visibility was literally limited; I couldn't see two inches ahead of me.

When Shelah and I finally met, we were both soaked and had to dry our beautiful selves off at the AB Building. We had to fend off a few surly looks from Manong Security Guard, but all in all we managed to get ourselves in order. The ride towards Glorietta was uneventful, which I now think was in order for us to prepare for the craziness later on in the evening.

Now my one loyal reader will remember Maksim as the Croatian pianinst I was raving about a semester ago. Shelah was the one who had first gotten wind of his trip here to the Philippines-she had sent me a text message urging me to go with her and help her do some...immoral...things to the pianist. Of course, immorality draws me to an event in much the same way that nectar draws bees to flowers, and I immediately agreed to go with her.

It was a good thing we arrived there early because there was already a swirling mass of kibitzers hovering about the edge of the venue. Armed with a big umbrella and plain bad attitude, Shelah and I got ourselves positions that gave us the best view of Maksim. I'm telling you all, nice guys finish last.

While waiting for Maksim to appear, Shelah and I got to chatting up these two people beside us. R. was 17, a student of Music at the University of the Philippines, played the piano in London (Oi mate!), has dyslexia and an attention deficit disorder. Very nice to talk to: opinionated and witty, although at the back of mind I was in awe. Anybody who can get to college despite the said conditions deserves to be commended.

The other person was C., who Shelah and I both considered as a vile, lonely being. His fat, pasty look reminded us of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from the first Ghostbuster movie, and we would have blasted him to soft, gooey bits if we had proton packs handy.

But social hour was over once Maksim sauntered over onto the stage. Yes, it was unbelievably rude of me to just snub R., but this was MAKSIM! Maksim of the long, lovely, bejeweled fingers! Maksim of the tight shirts, tight pants, and deep voice!

We were expecting a forty minute show, but Maksim only played for a little over twenty five minutes. But those minutes were MAGICAL! It was almost unnatural, seeing those fingers glide over the keyboards, that for a moment I felt like a freak. My fingers seemed abnormal short and stumpy, graceless and all around useless. Shelah could only groan "Oh God" every once in a while.

Even more horrifying was the fact that I literally stalked the guy! Let me ask you this question, One Loyal Reader. Have you seen those boyband documentaries where hordes of screaming teenage girls chased after tour buses and were whimpering like pathetic losers? For about fifteen minutes I lost about any vestige of dignity I had (not that I had a lot of dignity to lose, but still) and morphed into a teenybopper. I was running around Greenbelt like an idiot, and looking back at the whole incident now I plead temporary insanity.

One funny thing did happen during all that stalking. While chasing Maksim around the premises, these guy running beside actually hit a post. You never really expect to see these things in real life, but this guy actually hit the post with an audible thud. Hopefully he's getting medical attention somewhere.

Of course, being the decadent partygoers that we are, Shelah and I decided not to go home just yet but instead check out the Friendster party being held at Temple, which luckily enough was just one restaurant away from the place Maksim was having his dinner (yes, I stalked him all the way to the restaurant). Joey, who was with us when we were at the Masquerade party at Megamall, was magically there as well.

We did not immediately head off to Temple, because we had made arrangements to meet with some other friends of mine, who are collectively known as The Beautiful People (TBP). Individually, they are: Unnamed Friend (from the Halloween Bash, remember?), Model # 1 and her Should-Be-A-Model Boyfriend, and Model # 2. I was sweaty, tired, and cranky, so it didn't do much for my self-esteem when we met up with them and they all looked fabulous.

After the necessary introductions, TBP had to go off and find parking space while Shelah, Joey and I headed off to Temple to wait for them. On the way to Temple we walked past Luke Jickain. Luke Jickain! The guy who should be shot in the head for looking too beautiful! Apparently he had just come from the Friendster party and was now headed off to NU.VO, a place so swanky you can only stay for thirty minutes because staying for any period longer than that marks you as a desperate social climber looking to make some famous friends.

We took it as a good sign that Luke Jickain had just been to the Friendster party, we were expecting to meet equally beautiful specimens of humanity at the Temple. So it was with a tiny bit of giddiness that TBP, Shelah, Joey and I entered Temple.

As to what religion Temple actually caters to, I can't really tell, but it definitely isn't for the Bible-thumpin' crowd. If one were absolutely idiotic they would mistake the huge Buddha over the bar as some form of the Israelite's Golden Calf, all around us teenagers were cavorting like they were part of a modern version of Cecil DeMille's Ten Commandments (the movie they always show during the Holy Week).

The Friendster party, to put it succintly, was simply a popularity contest among the already popular crowd. It was like they were insulting socially-challenged individuals everywhere: I have 2,000,000 friends in my network and you only have 15. Ha. Loser.

So we found it a bit ironic that a fight would break out in a Friendster party, no less. The whole scene seemed like it was taken out of some ill-conceived American teenage drama; everybody's gathered around in a circle and screaming like the monsters from the Taguro season of Ghost Fighter (Tapusin, tapusin, tapusin!). It was a minor scuffle, no broken glass, no gunshots, just a few punches here and there, but it was funny nonetheless. After that things slowly began to peter out, and at about 4 in the morning, we all decided to head home.

COSMOPOLITAN'S BACHELOR BASH

I am not a Cosmogirl, and unless I undergo some pretty radical surgery, I never will be. That was why, on the bus headed to Ayala on that rather drizzly Thursday evening (yesterday), I had some pretty valid apprehensions on whether I should attend this Bachelor Bash at all. A room full of women screaming at buff and unnaturally good-looking men doesn't exactly lift a teenage boy's self-esteem.

I had even tried convincing my friend Ruth that guys like me definitely have no place in a party inspired by a magazine supplement that features 69 men in various states of undress.

"But I'm a guy! I don't think they allow guys in parties like that."

"They already have 69 guys. I don't think they need another one."

"I'm really sorry I can't come with you. You see, I developed an unnatural fear of washboard abs when I was a kid. Weird, yes, but it can't be helped."

However, Ruth threw all my perfectly logical excuses out the window. She had tickets, and she was intent on bringing me to the party. Wild horses wouldn't have stopped, and I wasn't stupid enough to even try.

Meeting up with Ruth at Glorietta passes by like a blur. I know we ate somewhere, but the only thing I remember is that I put something chewy and hot (!) into my mouth. Weird. We leave the mall with shops closing all around us, and as we head towards the NBC Tent I had the uncomfortable feeling that I would be the only guy in there. Thankfully, we immediately encounter non-model males once we get out of Ruth's pick-up. I breathe a sigh of relief. The long lines in front of the Tent intimidate me for a moment, but Ruth, Jas and Irene use their "We're part of the press powers" to bypass the line and get us VIP seats. I am incredibly glad I choose Journalism as my major.

9:30. Paolo Paraiso walks behind me wearing black leather, trademark husky voice in tow. (Uh, excuse me.) When he's all clothed up and hiding those abs, I feel a little better about myself.

9:35. Maverick and Ariel, those two retro '70's dudes on Home Along the Airport, are interviewing a girl who looks like she hasn't eaten for weeks. Good luck to her.

9:39. Wow. I never realized Filipinos liked touching each other so much. And who is that girl Paolo Paraiso is canoodling with? Isn't he supposed to be with Mylene Dizon?

9:41. Several well-muscled men suddenly run up the stage, eliciting more than a good number of frenzied screams. They're all doing some manner of bodily contortions, and I feel like I should be creaming along with the rest of the girls.

9:44. Girls have begun climbing up the stage, which results in even more screaming. They pick their partners from the men already on stage, and from where I stand it looks like they're thrusting their hips at each other. Hmm....

9:46. THEY HAVE TAKEN OFF THE SHIRTS! I REPEAT, SHIRTS HAVE BEEN TAKEN OFF! I THINK MY EARDRUMS ARE BLEEDING FROM ALL THIS SCREAMING!

9:50. A moment of silence as the male dancers are ushered backstage, and just when my eardrums have adjusted to silence once more three new shirtless guys come out and induce a fresh bout of hysterical screaming. These guys have been working out; stomachs don't get any flatter than that. I suddenly feel the urge to do some sit-ups when I get home.

The emcee explains that they're going to be part of a game ("It's the Estee Lauder Intuition Game!"), which involves three cast mates from the reality show Singles spraying Estee Lauder Intuition for Men on the sexiest spots of their designated partners. The first pair has the girl asking the audience where she's supposed to spray the fragrance, and quite expectedly the audience answers with a resounding "crotch!" Once spraying is done, the female audience screams for her to smell it. Girl does as she is told. I'm sure she'll make a good wife to somebody.

The second pair, half of which is model Ian Casem (or at least I think it's Ian Casem), is much more...dventurous. Rather than blindly asking the audience what to do, girl takes off Ian's shirt, sprays liberally from chest down to...you know where, and then girl proceeds to do a sexy little dance as she smells Ian from the chest all the way down there. Once her face is down there, Ian shoots the audience a dirty look, lifts up his right hand in much the same manner Eminem does when he's rapping, and then thrusts his hips into the girl's face. There was no actual crotch-to-face contact, but I'm still thinking of going to confession on Sunday.

9:58. Undress to Thrill game. It would have been exciting, except the guys don't exactly look all that drool worthy. Yeah, they've got abs, so what. I'm not insecure. Nope, definitely not insecure even if girls are dancing on their lap right this very moment. If these guys don't succeed in whatever career they've got planned, they could consider being male strippers.

10:06. Take It Off Trivia game. I know it's a stupid question to ask at this kind of party, but can these guys do something more besides shedding their clothes?

Oooh. The F Girls are part of the game. Nice! Although Daphne, Angel and Amanda are all equally beautiful, from where I'm standing Amanda, hands down, has the cutest behind.

As the name suggests, the game has the guys' shed a piece of clothing with each correct answer the F Girls give. With Amanda fast as hell at running to the mike, the guy partnered with her is quickly left with only a pair of boxers. At this point one feels a shift in the air, muscle bound guy knows that the girls have got him by the balls. When Amanda gives another correct answer, he looks around desperately, tears in his eyes. For some reason I find this hilarious. Awww, big muscleman is afraid of the screaming teenagers. Probably feels like he's being treated like a piece of meat, without even thinking that men have made women feel that way for centuries. So much for his supposed masculinity.

10:20. These models smoke way too much. Maybe that's how they maintain their slim figures. Carbon monoxide is hanging thickly over the air.

10:22. The emcee announces that the men have arrived, and the loudest screams erupt from the audience.

STOP THE SCREAMING!

Men clad in tight underwear begin to sashay down the ramp, head held high and attitude nonchalant, as if they do this everyday. I have the strange urge to stuff money down their undies.

A muffled scream from behind me as Luke Jickain appears on the ramp. As he takes his turn on the ramp I want to put a bullet through his head. No one that good-looking should be allowed to breath. Another bachelor elicits another scream from another person as he displays something-bulging-in his undies. I don't even want to go there.

The second wave of bachelors walk on stage clad in cowboy attire (the boots and the hat, anyway). Is any vestige of my childhood safe? Although I have to admit that I admire these guys'...uh...balls. I'd be scared to walk into a crowd of hormone-fueled teenage girls with nothing but a cowboy hat for protection.

The last bachelor to be shown for this batch is Powerboy Frank Croenenberg, and I feel a shiver of terror run down my spine. I have serious doubts as to whether he is a human being at all. Maybe he was bred in some Martian laboratory and sent here to confuse us with his good looks while the Martians prepare their invasion.

10:32. Construction worker costumes. And here I was thinking that the Village People had gone the same way as disco. And how many sit-ups does that guy do? Those abs have got to be fake. Maybe they're just pandesal taped onto normally flabby stomachs. I'd love to look like that. Without doing the sit-ups, of course.

Man, they look like a pack of wolves on the prowl, walking down the ramp in groups. Moms, you better hide your daughters!

10:36. Now they're dressed up as postmen. I'll never look at mailboxes the same way again. How do girls come up with these ideas? And I thought guys were the ones who had out-there fantasies.

Eeewww. That guy has something in his undies. I'm hoping it's a sock.

10:40. A guy clad in a motorcycle outfit walks onstage, stares at the audience for a few minutes, and then proceeds to strip. It's not your run of the mill taking-off-of-clothes; this guy is different. He takes the biker helmet off and artfully shakes his wet hair and you just feel the sigh rippling through the audience. Then he walks forward and rips his shirt off, throwing it haphazardly onto the ground, and even that elicits titters from the audience. As he walks down the aisle he wipes his mouth with his palm in a naughty, dirty, degenerate sort of way, as if he was thinking which one of the audience was he going to go to bed with next. When he reaches the end of the ramp he shoots the audience a glare that screams "Oh yeah, I know you all want to f***k me," and then shrugs and walks away.

That guy is a stripper. If he isn't one now, he probably was some sort of male prostitute in another life. No one undresses like that! Nobody's hair tousles like that! And how come the girls screamed when he shot them that look of pure contempt? So what if he's got a really cool tattoo on his shoulder blades? And does he really think that slowly licking his lips with his tongue is attractive?

Is there some place where I can learn all the stuff he just did?

10:44.Soldier uniforms. Oh no. Bad memories of ROTC. Wait, these are the Cosmo centerfolds.

Up first is Robbie Mananquil. Maybe because it's already late, but I think Robbie Mananquil is definitely ugly. Yes he's got washboard abs, but his face looks more like some kind of fungi-infested foot.

Now it's Greg Martin. The screaming is deafening. I can't hear anything anymore. He easily tears apart the flimsy red shirt he's wearing, and I am immediately reminded of Hulk Hogan. Except Greg is much more handsome and has a much more stable head. Wait a minute, what's he doing to that girl? He's carrying her, and he's...ok, let's skip that part.

Woah. Greg just did a somersault and a back flip, all in one continuous motion. Now we know he's flexible. I may be risking expulsion for saying this, but girls, you have to bear this man's child. Do whatever you have to do, get him drunk, drug him, and take him hostage. This man's genes have got to be passed on to the next generation.

There is nothing at all notable about Reggie Curley, except for the fact that his underwear bulges too much. I think he may be hiding the entire population of Kosovo down there.

Besides Ali Peek, Rob Duat has got to be the most dubious inclusion to Cosmo's list of bachelors. I don't know why, but he seems to me like a male prostitute that frequently hovers around Quiapo. And he even has the audacity to show his butt. Errrggghhhlacckkk. Now I don't need to confess. I need therapy. Or a barf bag. I may not be able to sleep a few nights after this.

10:54. A throng of men pulling out their underwear and throwing it at the screaming and eager audience; a dozen or so hands clutch greedily at the personal souvenirs. Well. That's a sight I thought I'd never get to see before I died.

Oh wow. Women fighting over thrown underwear. Is there a priest nearby I can talk to? Good Lord, now they're wearing it on their heads. Now all we need are a bunch of guys wearing bras on their heads and we're all set to go.

10:59. Jay-R is actually a pretty good singer. Am now feeling appropriately guilty for all those times I laughed at his music video.

12:22. We are actually stalking the Cosmo bachelors. I can't believe I'm going along with this.

1:00. Walked past Celine Lopez, and whatever you may think of her, she carries that miniuscle tank top very well.

1:11. Marc Nelson is just across me, and boy he's quite the touchy-feely kind of guy. To my left is Tim Yap, and looking at him makes me want to establish a friendship with his dermatologist. Those are some pretty smooth cheeks. And Dos Quong II's behind is right in front of me. He seems like a nice guy, but I think he looks a bit drunk.

We wanted to stay in Azora and party with the beautiful people, but Ruth, Jas, Irene and I start to feel a little uncomfortable. These people are WAY TOO BEAUTIFUL! Personally, I felt like I was bubblegum being scraped off an old leather shoe. After a one-minute huddle, we decide to pack up and leave.

Ronald Lim is glad to be back. Now if you'll excuse him, he has to do some sit-ups.

It really surprices me why he got the role of leading man ni Claudine. Bakit wala na bang good looking at good actor at the same time sa stable ang ABS that they have to give this role to Luke ? Yeah he looks okey naman and maybe in time his acting will improve . Kung pang preprimetime soap maybe hindi pa ganoon ka surprising that he would get a leading man role but we are talking of a Primetime show here in Marina . Ang tanong talaga is why him ? Super lakas ba ang manager niya sa ABS or malakas talaga backer niya sa ABS . He's not even a star circle batch member. If I a member of ABS star circle I would be at least surpriced if not even upset why a guy like luke got a leading man role in a primetime show considering how poor his acting is at the moment. Kulang talaga . It seems its palakasan talaga.

Buti sana if he was at least featured lately in a commerical na talagang pinagusapan at kinakiligan ng tao ( mala rexona boys ad) kaya binigyan ng malaking break . But this is not even the case. I've seen Luke in person sa Eastwood. Maputi pala siya at ang tangkad. Schoolmate pala siya ng friend ko before sa ICCS . Hindi nga daw siya mapaniwalang sikat na si Luke kasi siya yung tipong "clown" na laging nagpapatawa sa classroom. Hearthrob daw talaga siya, lalo na yung brother niyang si Martin.

hmmm, last we checked yung character niya eh kunwari nasa manila ngayon.:) he and those lifeguards decided to stay muna in manila after that disaster that victoria created during marina's birthday.
