Below is Quinito Henson's article of an activity that took place last Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003. This shows that La Sallians and Ateneans can join together for a good cause.
Spirit of Christmas
SPORTING CHANCE By Joaquin M. Henson
The Philippine Star 12/16/2003
The spirit of Christmas was evident as players from La Salle and Ateneo got together in a bonding activity initiated by alumni of both schools recently. A bus took the hardcourt archrivals–some sitting next to each other–to the Bantay Bata Village in Norzagaray, Bulacan, for a whole-day immersion exercise.
It was supposed to be a reaching out program for the players. But Ateneo’s Paolo Bugia jokingly asked Blue Eagles team manager Monchito Mossessgeld before boarding the bus, ‘Sir, whom are we reaching out to–the Bantay Bata kids or the La Salle players?’"
Mossessgeld replied, "Both."
In the bus, La Salle Alumni Association president Lito Tanjuatco talked about his affiliation to both schools during his turn at the microphone. He called it "unity in diversity." Tanjuatco finished at La Salle. His brothers transferred from La Salle to Ateneo for high school and his children study at the Loyola Heights campus.
The group arrived in Norzagaray just in time for lunch. But before settling down to eat, the visitors were briefed about the children in the village. They were touched.
One boy–now 12–was rescued by Bantay Bata after neighbors reported hearing him cry constantly. Bantay Bata staff found the boy in a box under the kitchen sink of his home six years ago. The kid had the weight of a two-year-old and was pitifully malnourished. Apparently, the boy was abandoned by his father who entrusted him to a psychologically imbalanced caretaker. The boy was frequently beaten with a broom. The Bantay Bata staff noticed the boy would hold up his arms in front of his face instinctively as if to defend himself whenever someone approached him during his early years in the village.
The boy was the first-ever child rescued by Bantay Bata. He has grown to display sketching skills. Mosssessgeld said the boy has an interesting drawing of an OB van that shows what is inside like an X-ray. "He draws wonderfully, with correct proportions and perspective," noted Mossessgeld. "All his drawings include the logo of ABS-CBN or the Bantay Bata Foundation."
Another boy the visitors met wore an ugly scar in his head. His father used to butt out his cigarets on his head instead of an ash tray.
"It was made clear to the players they would be with children who were abandoned or abused or both," said Tanjuatco. "The players were split into five groups and assigned to the five cottages in the village. They fed the children, ate with them, helped wash the dishes and put the children to sleep for siesta. The children were very excited and hyperactive. In the afternoon, the players distributed loot bags to the kids. We left at about 5 p.m. and we were back at the ABS-CBN compound by 6:30 p.m."
Mossessgeld said "it was heartwarming to see the players relating so well with the children who enjoyed every minute of their time with their kuyas." He added: "It was good seeing the players talk to the children, play games, do arts and crafts with them and put them to sleep though some of the players like Jerwin Gaco, Doug Kramer and JC Intal fell asleep even before some of the kids. It found it very amusing to see the players asleep and the children, some of whom were still awake, lying beside them. "Tanjuatco said when they parted ways, the rival players exchanged "high fives" and other pleasantries. He suggested a Mass and dinner for the players to firm up their bond before the holidays or right after New Year’s Day. Then, in February, Tanjuatco proposed the staging of a friendship game–pitting teams composed of a mixture of La Salle and Ateneo players–at the National Penitentiary.
"The Blue Eagles enjoyed very much the opportunity to do something for those who do not have as many blessings," said Mossessgeld. "With regard to the Green Archers, a common comment was, ‘Okay sila, sir. Mababait, makwento.’ It was a wonderful visit. It provided the Archers and Eagles an opportunity to know each other as persons, beyond their roles as players. It brought them together and brought out the best in them. It showed that Ateneans and La Sallians actually share many values and convictions that can be the basis, if they put their minds to it, for unity and friendship."
L. A. Tenorio, who almost skipped the trip because of a bad cold, asked to leave early to rest. He’d brought a car so he could go home without disrupting the program schedule. When Mossessgeld learned that Joseph Yeo–whose back was still strained–also wanted to leave early to rest, he thought of accompanying both in the car for the ride home.
"L.A. and Joseph, who were teammates in the junior PBL (Philippine Basketball League) some years back, had a long and pleasant conversation on the way home, talking about their teams and reminiscing about former teammates," related Mossessgeld. "They also talked about other UAAP (Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines) players they admired. Listening to the two of them, no one would suspect that just a couple of months ago, their respective teams had waged a bitter court rivalry where they were main protagonists."
Tanjuatco and Mossessgeld agreed to push for an institutionalized program of interaction between and among all UAAP teams during the offseason. "It could be part of the UAAP program in order to build greater camaraderie among players and schools," said Mossessgeld. "We also felt that the interaction should include many outreach activities that could help develop in our athletes a greater and stronger spirit of service to others." Tanjuatco said he’s upbeat about promoting more bonding activities. "I’m really glad naumpisahan na ‘to," he continued. "Monchito and Jun-Jun (Capistrano) are pursuing it. We’d like to involve the University of the East and the University of Santo Tomas and the other UAAP schools in future activities."
How appropriate that the idea of bonding was hatched during the season of giving.
This shows that our respective players are not too different from each other and can be good friends on and off the court. Now, if only the supporters of either schools can do the same.

This is the email DLSAA President Lito Tanjuatco sent to me last Dec. 9, 2003. who was in this activity and gave a few more details. It's really food for thought for all La Sallians and Ateneans who want to know what the true meaning of X'mas is. It also shows that the rivalry between our two schools should ALWAYS be set aside for the sake of people who are less fortunate than us. Also, La Sallians and Ateneans can unite for a good cause and La Sallians and Ateneans can be good friends.
Info i would like to share with you. I will arrange to have an article written about this in the La Sallian as Ateneo will do the same in the Guidon. I will also write about this in the Jan issue of the Alumnews. I spoke with Quinito Henson this morning who advised me that his article on Sunday (Phil. Star) will be about this.
Dear Bro. Armin,
Yesterday's bonding activity with Ateneo went well. I arrived on time, 9:30am at the assembly place - Starbuck's at the ABS-CBN compound. To my pleasant surprise most of our players were already there with Asst. Coach Gie Abanilla and Awoo Lacson. Three others arrived a few minutes after. I think all of our players except for Carlo Sharma were present. The Ateneo players were also complete except for Wesley Gonzales and Richie Alvarez who are in Vietnam for the SEAgames. Jun-jun capistarno and Monchito Mossegeld from Ateneo and Danny Jose, Ramoncito Campos and myself completed the group. Fr. Ben Nebres dropped by to see us off. I asked him to give an inspirational talk and lead us in prayer.
Noticeably there was a Great Divide while we were at Starbuck's. We let it pass. But in the bus we made a conscious effort to mix the players from both schools. We made Tenorio, Gaco and Cardona sit close to each other.
Ateneo's Capistrano and Mossesgeld, Danny, Ramocito, and I took turns speaking to the group during the bus ride (good the bus has a sound system) about our friends and good relations with people from the rival school. In my case I mentioned that I had worked with and have many friends from the Ateneo. Of course i mentioned that my brothers transferred to the Ateneo (from La Salle after elementary studies) and that my own children study at the other school. The gist is we have "Unity in Diversity".
We arrived just in time for lunch. Just before lunch was served, we were briefed about the children. One had an ugly scar in the head because his father did not have an ash tray. Another who was 12 years old spent his first six years in a box and the only physical interaction he had with his father was physical blows and beating. It was made clear to the players specially that they will be with children who were at best abandoned but that many were abused. They were attentive during the short briefing so i would like to think that they were touched. The organizers served a very simple/plain one viand lunch. I earlier insisted to the organizers that what the children eat we will also eat. Some players were asking where we would eat. I commented that we are not in a picnic but in a social work cum bonding activity and that humility is the order of the day. The players were divided into 5 groups and assigned to one of the 5 cottages in the Bantay Village. There they fed the children, ate with them, helped wash the dishes, and asked to put the children to sleep for siesta. The children were very excited and hyperactive. What happened was the reverse, some of the players fell asleep and the children kept on playing. Cardona, Coach Gie and Awoo had to leave early and left together after lunch. Interestingly, Yeo and Tenorio also had to leave early and they rode together with Mossesgeld. About 4pm was play time. It was a nice sight, all the players carrying children and others tagging along. The loot bags were given by the players to the children and we left the place at around 5pm and was back at the ABS-CBN compound by 6:30pm.
I think it was a success of sorts. As they were parting some Ateneo - DLSU players were exchanging "high fives" and other pleasantries. I hope that the imapct of yesterday is not fleeting. I suggested to Jun-jun Capistarno and Monchito Mossesgeld follow-up activities, perhaps a Mass and Dinner before the holidays or right after New Year. Then sometime in February, a friendship game, where 2 teams are formed composed of a mixture of players from both schools, played at the National Penitentiary. They like the idea. I also mentioned this to Coach Gie and he also likes the idea. To give it importance and and a sense of urgency, and assuming that you favor the idea, I suggest that you take this up with Fr. Ben Nebres. Needless to say I will continue to help in the coordination work.
Let me know what you think and let's strike while the iron is hot.
Now, as supporters of the Green and White and the Blue and White, let's try to reach out too to our less fortunate brothers and sisters and to our rivals - our friends too!
FABILLOH! ONE BIG FIGHT!!!

simulat simula pa lang, my thinking really was that ateneo and la salle SHOULD complement each other...
ateneo has always been known for wholistic approaches and students and dlsu for the specialized approach...
para bang the yin and the yang...
i hope they show that they cannot only work togeter, but bring about a greater output than their combined inputs by using each other's positive characteristics to the hilt...

my friend who was once a classmate of joseph yeo and la tenorio says that he can't imagine yeo and tenorio getting along with each other, much less share a ride home...
yeo is very cocky at times, although he doesn't mean it really... or so my friend says...
and la is very down to earth...
they are really opposites...

Good to hear something like this can happen but memories are short lived... sapakan pa rin yan pagdating sa court... too much pride...
Tickets will be hard to come by sa national penitentiary. Jerwin is their hommie so expect the inmates to show full support for their KOSA.

This is touching, yes... but I think there should be a line drawn between camaraderie and gayness.
The biggest selling factor of the UAAP (or any league for that matter) is the existence of bitter rivals.
Crispa-Toyota
Ginebra-Alaska
Ateneo-La Salle
Lakers-Celtics
Bulls-Pistons/Cavs/Knicks/Jazz
Like it or not, there is no league without animosity. Look at the PBA. Dwindling attendance... why? Sister teams battling it in the finals... the most boring 7-game series as of yet, knowing that the trophy will end up in the San Miguel building anyway.
It is the main thing that is keeping the UAAP afloat as the premiere sports league in the country. Fans of Green and Blue do not only cheer for their school, they cheer against the other. They want their school to succeed, yes, but they want their adversary to fail more. That is why many of us are reprieved that FEU won. At least the other side didn't get it.
And now, granted that this event was done for the benefit of the disprivileged, maybe it can pass. But to actually lobby for more "soirees" is... pardon the language... gay.
The UAAP is a battle, not a party.
It's about the blows, not the high-fives.
With all due respect.
Peace.

just keep the rivalry spirited but not ugly.
moreover, i don't see the likes of ateneo's doug kramer, LA tenorio, paolo bugia, and badjie as well as DLSU's gerwin, macmac, ryan, and joseph yeo wimping out in the most storied of UAAP rivalries; rather the important thing is that, for a day, their minds and hearts were far away from basketball and instead focused on spreading joy and happiness to kids who were dealt a cruel hand in life--and in the process discovered they had much in common with each other than they originally thought.

Observe the copout of this guy with the last two sentences of his post. His attempts at disguising the bashing with political correctness (by excusing himself with the 'gay' expression) are laughable.
Ang masasabi ko lang, yes, Ateneo-La Salle has become one of the most prized rivalries in Philippine history. So what? Ibig sabihin these players can't appreciate each other's company outside the hardcourt? Wow.
This guy has forgotten that despite the need for competition, sports are for camaraderie and for forging ties between human beings. Kaya nga mayroong rules at regulations, eh. Para alam ng participants ang existence of order and civility, while trying to kick your competitor's ***.

Inspiring. Why don't you paste a copy of the beatitudes while you're at it?
What I'm talking about is fact, not theory. You can flail your sportsmanship's oath all you want, but the essence of sports is hardly caught on a single idealistic credo. Fact is, it is bitterness that keeps the UAAP successful. It was ADMU-FEU in the Finals, but the highlight of the season was still the endgame brawl between La Salle and Ateneo.
Call me a cynic all you want. But I will not waver in saying this: hatred sells. I reiterate - it is what keeps the UAAP going.
And if you're selling Ateneo-La Salle as your big product, having them go out in these gimmicks is... plainly... false advertising.
Peace.

Of course one can see the upside of his competitor. You see it as a challenge. That's why our 4th championship was the sweetest... because our adversaries had finally gotten good enough to face us in the finals. But acknowledgement of the enemy's skills is not necessarily tantamount to not hating them.
P.S. This is sports, not politics. If our leaders were as skilled and as dedicated to their jobs as our sportsmen are to theirs, then hatred or no hatred, this country [i]will[/b] be better.

Peace.
I feel sorry for you, dude. Not only did you get banned (again), but your severely flawed arguments and replies to my post made you and your ilk look...kinda pathetic.
What happened to relativity? What's wrong ba with saying that hatred sells for you, but not for me, a participant in this rivalry?
After the basketball game is over, it's always back to good natured rivalry. That's healthy. That's why the UAAP sells. Because outside of the UAAP, tao 'yung mga 'yan. Yes, the game is an important part of their lives. But in the end, it's just part of it. If your life does not revolve around the UAAP rivalry, you do not let it fuel your fandom.
And, Mr. Hao? I'm sorry, but in this thread hindi mo binara nang maayos si ateneo10. Maybe in others. Please post the URLs para ma-verify namin.
