Do you read the articles being written by Maurice Arcache, Johnny Litton, Tim Yap, Pepper Teehankee etc? I find all of them sooo irritating! I mean, Maurice and Johnny are like paid advertisers of those rich matron's "charitable activities". My goodness, I hate seeing the faces of those old fools hogging the papers! And Tim Yap and Pepper, they wrote nothing nut about their parties...I mean, what's the point of featuring these on newspapers?

an addition to the list is Tessa Prieto Valdes.

puro mga personal experiences ang pinagsususulat. walang kwenta talaga.

oh well, the socialites............ thats what they do.

sosy version sila ni lolit solis kasi puro pagbati ang mababasa mo sa column nila, puro pangalan. kailangan sila sa newspaper para pampakapal. pag makapal ang newspaper, happy mga nagtitinda sa palengke.

in fairness, johnny litton is a good stand-up comedian (sosyal na dolphy daw). he is very funny sa oh no! before.

I agree.

About the articles. They're not really annoying, just boring. :D

they are annoying and boring... and the solution is not to read them. unfortunately, you still have to come across them in the papers...that's why it's annoying cos it was a waste of space that could've been used for a more interesting article.

tessa prieto is all over the place but if she were not rich she'd laughed out of town. pareho na lang sila ni grace glory go ng phil star their faces are always plastered in their newspapers. i never read them though - waste of time.

but in fairness, i read Tessa Valdes' articles! funny kasi eh!

pero walang kwenta. puro tungkol sa mga party that she attended, the ribbon cutting ceremony she headed, some program she hosted.... etc.

These columnist are all about P.R. It's an industry you'll just have to live with. Some media institutions will fold up if they didn't do this stuff. The best way not to be affected is not to read them.

Good day:)

I thought my friends and I were the only ones getting SICK of the same people we see on the society pages....heheheh... Pansin niyo, every year, the same people are on the "best dressed" list. Duh...there are OTHER people who dress well too, it's just that they don't get photographed as much! I DARE magazine editors to pick "chic" people from the crowd and commend their fashion sense. I've (I guess, we've) had ENOUGH of these people!!!!!!!! =D

Because the publishers are a bunch of socialites themselves. Of course they want to "please" their friends.

You'd find it interesting if you (or your friends) were featured in the articles...they cater to a certain niche in the market of these broadsheets

I just wish that they'll be a BIT MORE SENSITIVE to what's happening around them. With all the tragedy and news about people going hungry, whining about a "wardrobe crisis" is just the height of distastefulness, which is ironic because they are supposedly catering to a high class niche. For a third world country like ours, society page should be more reflective of the REAL situation of our society. You cannot adopt the society writing of other countries like the U.S. and the U.K. because first of all, we do not have monarchs, and second, let's face it, with the very few genuinely elite people that we have, you can only write so much about them. The rest of the social climbing class are just, pardon the term, more jologs than the real jologs.

Also, if they think putting up soup kitchens would pass as charity work, they would be better off serving refugees in some war-torn country.

I agree with you in certain points....however i do not think they are coming from a high class niche. True they have a lot of money but money doesn't always equate to class (perfect example would be Mystica!).

I totally believe that their spending 30,000-100,000 on a bag or a pair of shoes is absolutely distasteful. Especially when there are so many kids starving on the street. But then again this is another topic altogether

That's a total myth.

A true socialite today would:

* Scour for ukay-ukay (but not admitting it)
* Support local young designers like Avel Bacudio and Ivar Aseron.
* Shop at Rustan's.

If you look at Greenbelt 4, iilan lang ba ang mga bumibili doon? Why make such a big issue out of it. May pera sila, fine, use it.

Saka helping the poor can be tiring too. Kasi kahit ano'ng tulong ibigay mo, they will always end up on the streets. bibigyan mo ng pera ang pulubi, ano ang gagawin? Bibili ng rugby! Bibigyan mo ng pagkain, ano ang sasabihin? Wala ka bang pera? Bibigyan mo ng pabahay, ano ang gagawin? Ibebenta ang lupa at mananatili sa squatters.

just my opinion

I agree. But my reasons for complaining are:

1. I, as a consumer, have the right to expect quality journalism.
2. I, as a free citizen, have the right to write about my observations.

I am not envious because my name has appeared in the Philippine Tatler and I am famous in my own right (seriously). And envy is a simplistic reason, I think. It's just that, at these times when our country has seemingly gone to the dogs, seeing the artificiality of some sectors of our society leaves a bad taste in the mouth. I know they are not to blame for the poverty of other people. But when you open your eyes wider and look at the bigger picture, somehow, you will realize that we are all responsible for the misery of the majority of our people. FPJ dies and the whole showbiz industry grieves and gives his wake 24 x 7 media coverage. People don't even dare to politicize the event and say bad things about FPJ. De Venecia's daughter dies and suddenly the budget for the fire department gets finally prioritized. What I'm saying is that, poverty is an every day tragedy for most of us. But when bad things happen to prominent people, we get jolted.

That's another thing. We only complain when our own sensibilities are touched.

i read this part of the paper all the time. call me stupid but this is how i update myself on how some of my friends are. the articles are fun to read and its fun to know what in in fashion and eating out without actually having to buy magazines kase im too lazy to get up and do that.

re the society page reflecting the real situation in the country.. the whole newspaper does that already. isn't it kinda boring if even to society pages or the lifestyle pages do that too? not just that, but there's nothing to look forward to anymore! life would just be a really bleak outlook of killed addicts, corrupt politicians and another erap whatever.

its just my opinion. i guess its fair to say that if you have it, flaunt it. and those who don't.. e di don't read the lifestyle pages. a lot of the vendors at the wet market use them as tinapa wrappers. so whatever right?

i agree with starczamora. you know whats the in thing now? is to look for a really great bag designer (preferably up and coming!) and flaunt their creations like saying "oh i got this from like this" and you'll be so galeng for being able to find an amazing bag designer and you'll be helping that designer be famous eventually :)

I'm not saying that they just report depressing stories or whatever. What I'm saying is that society writing can be made more relevant in the society. Example, instead of writing about some party that we don't care about, why not feature profiles of high society people and what they have done or contributed to the society to have reached that status? Let's face it, most of Filipinos are middle class, or the so-called "noveau riche," so why not write about the "good" side of being noveau riche... that is getting rich through hardwork? Society writing can be more than just what and who are you wearing blah blah.

There are some things you cannot simply ignore. Yes, we can always choose not to read the pages. But there are some of us who choose to observe and express what's on our minds. There are some of us who look at the bigger picture... why do people do this and do that. We're reacting to what we think is disgusting. The question is not whether these society columnists are worth reading. The real question is... are we setting our priorities straight? Is our media sending out the right signal to the people?

:rotflmao: i believe its an ego thing! they get so hung up on their (real or imagined) achievements, money, etc. besides most of the people you see in the society pages are really nobodies who became some sort of somebody. eventually, they start believing their own press releases and feel they are entitled to be part of so and so event or party. i've met some of these people and frankly they scared the s**t out of me. para ka kasing nasa earth tapos yung kausap mo nasa ibang galaxy, iba-iba yung sinasabi na ewan.

Eto ba yung Catholic Women's Club (CWC)? Asus, high school pa lang ako (which was during the early 90s), natatawa na ako sa mga theme parties nila na naka broadcast sa People's Tonight (!). Ang sagwa. May Arabian theme, Hawaiian theme, etc. Kulang na lang mag-Trip to Jerusalem sila. Parang children's party-cum-night of the living dead!
