Nice! Parang LAX sa labas.

I wonder, how may "istambays" with jeepneys will be waiting at the arrival even if they have entirely no business whatsoever?

From its exterior it has an uncanny similarity to Bangkok's Terminal 1/2. Only 2 things Im unsure of:
1.)The Canary Yellow Immigration Booths- its blindingly BRIGHT for me and it doesn't blend well with the surrounds.

2.)The triangular shaped glass vents (see 3rd picture from TOP). It reminds me of some High School Gymnasium :glee:

Don't mind me, Im just a bit pedantic...

Bakit pinapayagan ang mga kung sino-sino sa loob ng airport departure and arrival building to get physically close to and harass the passengers? Bakit pinapayagan those other people (official or not) na wala namang official business to be there at the time to mingle with and get physically close to the arriving passengers, thus giving them the opportunity to harass (with intention to extort money) the passengers.

Here is my NAIA experience when I went home 2 years ago. After passing through Immigration without any unwanted incident I then proceed to the luggage conveyor, then to Customs. After getting done with customs processing push ko na cart (with my balikbayan boxes) to the door and out of the building. Tinignan ko ang security guard asking for help, the guard looked the other way. I tried calling the attention of the customs people at the table who were just done checking my boxes, they ignored me. The result, that man got $5 from me para lang makalabas na ako ng building dahil gusto ko na talaga makauwi and rest after a long plane ride.

im sorry but the new naia3 just plainly sucks. the tiles for th bathroom looked like it came from the 60's. and the post tensions looked like it was ripped off from other famous international airports. the play of high ceiling also doesnt fly with me. its too simple. we spent how much for this? wow. seems like a waste of time for me. (if time was really consumed in making this monster) i dont even think the designers paid too much attention to this. they seemed to just rushed this all up.

point is, why copy from some other structure? couldnt we design our own original thing? oh yeah, i forgot. SOM designed this. We practically said that we dont trust our own.

but of course im not the best critic. just my two cents.

i don't think so. parang nabasa ko ayaw yatang pumayag ng PAL na lumipat dito. sarili nila ang Centennial 3 and personally, mas gusto ko yung PAL na dun na lang sa NAIA3, hindi crowded, parang relax ka paglabas mo.

and the mall? again, baka hindi rin matuloy ito. ayaw yata ng FAA. sobrang higpit nga naman ng mga airport ngayon tapos magtatayo ka ng mall sa tabi nito?

yan ang problema sa ating mga pinoy. Tinotolerate natin ang mga lagay. I dont care if its a buck, 5 or 50$. Prinsipio lang. I go home every other year. I dont bring my stuff in boxes. I have 2 big luggages enough for 70 lbs. Pipila ako kung may pila but never ako maglagay para lang for my own comfort.

Anggal tayo na corrupt ang govt. corrupt din naman karamihan in our little way.

Big improvement ang new NAIA .

I think its about time that this be opened. I don't see this becoming a white elephant. We need an airport of International Standards. Simplicity is the key now. None of the stuffy airports can be seen anymore. High ceilings are ok. Minimalism is the key now. I personally like it. It'll be opened in due time. Its such a neat piece of property to go to waste.

Fighting travel slump with rate cuts, Changi becomes more attractive to airlines but is still trailing KL airport

By Karamjit Kaur

CHANGI Airport is now cheaper for airlines to fly to and has narrowed the gap with the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). A year ago, it was the third cheapest international airport in Asia, behind KL and Bangkok. Changi is still behind KLIA, but is now the second cheapest in Asia.

Malaysia moved speedily last year to attract business to its new airport, which opened in 1998, by waiving all landing and parking fees for new airlines flying into KLIA for five years. But the downturn in travel, sparked by the Sept 11 terrorist attacks in America, saw Changi fighting back with a $210-million Air Hub Development Fund last November. The fund helps the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), which manages Changi, to offer competitive charges and some free landings. It also came in handy when Sars caused a drastic drop in the number of flights and passengers this year.

The International Air Transport Association (Iata) ranked 11 airports in the region in June, comparing the charges payable for a Boeing 747-400 with a three-hour turnaround time. Charges at KLIA were the lowest at $1,018 - and that was $959 less than last year. Changi charged $2,524, a sharp drop of $1,803. Third-placed Jakarta charged $3,594, or just over $1,000 more than Changi. The most expensive was Tokyo's Narita Airport, which charged $16,956.

Apart from lowered rates for landing and use of aerobridges, which passengers use to pass between plane and airport, Changi now offers free landing to new airlines and carriers flying new city links. Among those which have benefited are three new airlines - Xiamen, Royal Nepal and Merpati Nusantara. United Airlines, Northwest Airlines and Singapore Airlines Cargo also touch down for free at Changi when they arrive from new destinations. The concessions introduced in January will be in force for two years. In addition, all airlines flying to Singapore now enjoy a 45 per cent rebate in landing fees. This will be cut to 15 per cent from Jan 1 next year and the new rates will be valid until the end of 2005.

Speaking to The Straits Times yesterday, Mr Lasantha Subasinghe, Iata's assistant director (user charges), said: 'Changi Airport offers airlines value for money. The facilities provided are good and yet the rates are very competitive.' A CAAS spokesman said: 'Many have the impression that Changi's landing, parking and aerobridge charges are high. These figures indicate that is not the case.'

Industry analysts said CAAS efforts to cut costs for airlines were timely and in line with various measures to ensure Singapore companies remain competitive. - The Straits Times

I. Economic Benefits from the Project

1. Under a build-operate-transfer arrangement with PIATCO, the Government of the Republic of Philippines will gain a $500 Million state-of-the-art facility without spending a single centavo. This BOT agreement allowed the Government to provide a much-needed modern terminal facility without having to utilize public funds. In addition, the Government is assured of receiving net revenues of up to Php 710 million per year during NAIA IPT 3's 25 years of operation, plus a 5%-10% share of PIATCO's gross revenues and a 36% share of all terminal fees collected from outbound passengers.

2. The Project has been providing and will continue to provide employment for thousands of Filipinos. The mere size of NAIA IPT 3 alone, at 183,000 square meters as against NAIA Terminal 1's 40,000 square meters, already gives a clear indication of the extent of additional employment opportunities that would be created to maintain, operate and support the facility. The NAIA IPT 3 Project, therefore, will not cause any reduction in employment opportunities. In fact, the construction of the facility itself already provided 4,000 direct employment and more than 20,000 indirect employment. Just imagine how many more thousands of jobs will be available when NAIA IPT 3 becomes fully operational!

3. The Local Government of Pasay City, one of the most populated cities in Metro Manila, will be entitled to collect income taxes from PIATCO at the rate of two percent (2%) of PIATCO's gross income. This would surely be helpful in ensuing the continued provision of basic support services to the constituents of Pasay City.

4. There will be increased commercial and economic activities not only in Pasay but also in nearby cities like Makati, Manila, Parañaque and Taguig.

5. NAIA IPT 3 will be a vital component in the efforts of the Department of Tourism and the local travel organizations to attract tourists and revive tourism as a primary Philippine industry. Surely, the first and lasting impression any traveler would have of the Philippines would be greatly enhanced by a new and well-equipped terminal facility at NAIA.

7. The success of the NAIA IPT 3 Project will serve as a testament to the viability of the Philippines' legal and political framework as far as private investments are concerned. A positive result can be expected to boost investor confidence in the Philippines, especially foreign investors.

II. Source of Philippine pride

1. Its modern design and architectural features will showcase the ingenuity and craftsmanship of Filipino engineers and architects noted in many parts of the world, with valuable insight from American, Japanese and British designers and technical experts.

2. An efficient and well-maintained airport terminal managed by warm and hospitable personnel will certainly give a good first impression of the country.

3. Its top-of-the-line features including advanced security systems and equipment make it at par with the world's first-rate terminals.

4. The terminal features numerous restaurants and retail stores where family and friends can comfortably spend more time with loved ones before their flight. These enterprises are a good mix of Filipino and international tastefulness, which will make both Filipinos and foreigners feel quite at home.

5. Modern yet comfortable lounges will be available for passengers who would like to relax while waiting for their flight.

6. Filipinos will soon have an airport terminal that parallels only the world's finest. This new gateway to the Philippines will surely make every one of us proud to be a Filipino.

The quality of services that will be provided at the NAIA IPT 3 goes beyond that of average airports.

A wide range of services and facilities will be made available to make each moment at the airport a

· Banks and ATM machines
· Currency exchange courier
· Baggage services
· Medical center
· Duty free shops
· VIP lounges
· Ecumenical chapel
· Conference facilities
· Four-storey shopping center

Solons inspect NAIA Terminal 3, back opening of airport

In a bid to thresh out issues surrounding the cancellation of the soft opening of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport International Passenger Terminal 3 (NAIA IPT3), the 23-member committee on transportation and communication of the House of Representatives conducted an on-site hearing after an inspection tour of the newly built airport. Committee chair Rep. Jacinto Paras officiated the proceedings delving on security and safety concerns.

During the inquiry, Rep. Paras asked PIATCO officials present to brief the committee on the security measures the airport has put in place. NAIA IPT3 general manager Guillermo Cunanan explained that the airport employs state-of-the-art equipment under an open terminal security set-up. Most international airports throughout the world run an open terminal concept where passengers and well-wishers can gain access into the terminal complex. This concept is widely practiced in major airports in Asia such as in Hong Kong, South Korea and Singapore; throughout the United States; and in such high-risks airports as in Tel Aviv, Israel and Heathrow, London where a high degree of threat is ever present. Commenting on the security set-up of Terminal 3, Surigao del Sur Representative Prospero Pichay shared the observation that “airports in Dallas, Oklahoma and San Francisco in the US don’t employ security measures at the entrances.”

Giving extra security to Terminal 3, close-circuit television cameras and access control are complemented by patrolling and static security guards and dedicated personnel trained to the highest levels of profiling security. K-9 elements provide additional coverage. For baggage screening, multi-levels of security checks using sophisticated x-ray machines are involved. These devices check luggage for suspicious items such as explosives or contrabands programmed for detection. “In comparison, NAIA Terminal 1’s security system uses 1990s series x-ray machines. Terminal 3 has the latest CTX 9000 devices approved for use in US airports,” Cunanan pointed out.

Manila International Airport Authority officials Florencio Montalbo, corporate planning manager, and Engr. Elpidio Mendoza, assistant manager for engineering and maintenance services, were also present to answer queries from the congressional panel. “In terms of equipment, Terminal 3 has the most modern with its CTX 9000 x-ray machine being top-of-the-line, as well as the terminal’s baggage screening system. The government is not criticizing Terminal 3’s security; our officials only want to doubly assure that the airport is protected given the prevailing threat level,” Montalbo explained.

Responding to the remark, Davao City Representative Prospero Nograles asked, “If the security at the old airport (Terminal 1) passes government standards, why is it that the more sophisticated Terminal 3 does not?”

“Since day one, they’ve (PIATCO) been investing money, and they’re still waiting in the wings. Government shouldn’t be the obstacle- it should push for this project’s completion for the Filipinos,” Parañaque Representative Eduardo Zialcita added. The committee inquiry ended with a motion to exercise the body’s oversight function to call on all government agencies involved, responsible officials and all parties concerned to resolve the problem and come up with a definite solution and timetable for the airport to open. A full committee meeting is being planned to further address the issues affecting NAIA IPT3.
