Mark Bautista is the new Prince of Pop

A fitting heir to the title owned by some of the country best singers, 20-year-old Mark Bautista is the new “Pop Prince” with his incomparable singing talent, strong stage presence and striking good looks. Standing 5'8" and weighing 145 pounds, he is this generation's biggest male singing discovery. He is being compared with the other winners of talent search contests, but this is unfair since Mark is much ahead of them in the accomplishment department.

Counting Frank Sinatra, Luther Vandross, Peabo Dryson, George Benson, Brian McKnight and Martin Nievera among his musical influences, Mark used to be a performer in Cagayan de Oro before joining the Star For A Night auditions, though he didn't win the grand prize. Viva Artists Agency spotted his potential and signed him up to a contract. Beginning as a co-host of S4AM with Sarah Geronimo, his biggest break is starring in sold-out concerts with her.

His first major project, a self-titled debut album under Viva Records, is one of the hottest CD buys these days. For the last few months, Mark has kept a low profile and concentrated on finishing this album. He says, “I really wanted to make sure that I came out with a good album that I could be proud of, that's why I concentrated on it exclusively for several months.”

The album is now out. It contains 12 cuts, including his heart-warming version of “Ngayon at Kailanman,” the Basil Valdez classic that Mark sang during the S4AN grand finals. There is also “Ako'y Maghihintay,” a duet with Sarah Geronimo. Other songs are “Baliw,” the CD's carrier single which comes with a music video directed by Jon Ilagan, “Kapag Ako'y Kailangan,” “Another Chance,” “Sayang Naman,” “One Girl,” “Lahat sa Buhay Ko” and cover versions of “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” “Out Here On My Own,” “Lost Without Your Love” and “Power of Love.”

Incidentally, Mark is promoting his album by doing the following mall shows: Jan. 24 at SM Sucat, Jan. 30 at SM Southmall, Feb. 1 at SM Bacoor, Feb. 6 at SM North-EDSA and Feb. 7 at SM Manila.

'DI MAITAPAT KA SARAH, KAY MARK NA LANG?

MASAYANG-MASAYA si Mark Bautista nang matupad ang pangarap na mai-launch ang kanyang self-titled debut album produced by Viva Records sa Hard Rock Cafe.

Noon, pangarap lang daw niyang magkaroon ng album at kumanta sa isang malaking venue tulad ng Har Rock Cafe.

"Hindi po rin ako makapaniwala," ngiti ni Mark. "Kasi, parang ang hirap abutin ang ganito, na vevue ng big-name singers and foreign artists ang place ng launch. Pero sa nangyayari, masaya ako, pati ang pamilya ko sa Cagayan de Oro. Full support sila sa dreams ko."

Ang laki na nga ng (improvement) ni Mark. Physically and performance-wise, malakas ang dating niya ngayon at lalaking-lalaki. gumanda pa ang kanyang boses kaysa noong sumali siya sa Star For A Night.

May mga nagku-compare nga kay Mark kay Erik Santos, ang questionable winner sa Star In A Million ng ABS-CBN 2. Sabi naman ni Mark, hindi siya dapat i-compare kay Erik dahil hindi siya nanalo noon sa Star For A Night.

"Siguro dahil pareho kaming lalaki. But other than that, wala dapat comparison. Hindi naman ako ang winner ng S4AN, unlike siya na champion.

"Could it be na hindi siya puwedeng itapat kay Sarah (Geronimo), kaya sa akin na lang? Okey lang, basta healthy ang competition at walang siraan."

NOW that Viva Entertainment has successfully launched the multimedia career of teen star Sarah Geronimo, it's trying to do the same for Mark Bautista, Sarah's co-finalist in the "Star for a Night" singing competition last year.

Why Mark, rather than another male finalist, or any of the talented young men who present themselves to the Viva bosses for their consideration?

Mark's edge is his combination of strong singing voice and boyish good looks. This unique combination of attributes has prompted Viva to bet on the new talent's stellar potential, not just as a singer, but also as an actor.

He's currently busy recording songs for his debut album, which will be released early next year. And he's also in the Jolina Magdangal starrer, "Annie B.," where he's paired with Sarah.

His incipient success is particularly sweet for Mark, because he had to strive extra hard to make use of the break that "Star for a Night" gave him. When he was told that he had to travel from the province to Manila for his final audition, he was stumped because he didn't even have enough money to buy a boat ticket!

Solution: He and his brother begged to "hitch" a boat ride to Manila for a much smaller amount -- and the rest is, as they say, pop history.

Another saying goes: To whom much is given, much is expected. But, for people like Mark who don't have much in terms of financial resources to begin with but do everything needed to make it, even greater success can be expected to come to them as their reward, and for them to sweetly savor.

A fitting heir to the "Pop Prince" title, Mark stands 5’8, weighs 145 pounds and is a native of Cagayan de Oro, where he used to be a performer before joining the "Star For A Night" auditions. Although he didn’t win the grand prize, he felt like a winner nonetheless, after the Viva Artists Agency spotted his potential and signed him up to a contract.

For the last few months, Mark kept a low profile and concentrated on finishing his debut album. "I really wanted to make sure that I came out with a good album that I could be proud of, that’s why I concentrated on it exclusively for several months," he says.

The album is finally ready. It contains 12 cuts, including his version of "Ngayon at Kailanman," a Basil Valdez classic that Mark sang during the S4AN grand finals, and "Ako’y Maghihintay," a duet with Sarah Geronimo. How does he feel that he is now a legitimate recording star? "To tell you the truth, I have mixed emotions. I’m excited and nervous at the same time. I think all newcomers feel that way. But I’m really looking forward to performing at mall shows to promote the album and show people the stuff I’m made of," says Mark.

Incidentally, Mark is embarking on a series of mall shows to promote his album. The tour which kicked-off last Jan. 18 at SM Bicutan will be followed on Feb. 6 at SM North EDSA and Feb. 7 at SM-Manila.

Is he nervous about the competition he might encounter? Not after his experience in "Star For A Night," says Mark. He’s used to competition; besides, he knows that to make it in this business, only one thing is required: the willingness to give your 100 percent all the time. That, says Mark, is something he always does.

"Whether it’s a contest, recording my album, or just performing for people, I always give my 100 percent," he says. "That’s one of the things I learned, na kung puwede nga ay 101 percent pa nga ang ibigay mo sa audience. I always push myself to the limit when I’m singing, because I feel I owe them nothing less than my best," says this young man, who counts Frank Sinatra, Luther Vandross, Peabo Bryson, George Benson, Brian McKnight and Martin Nievera among his musical influences.

Mark is also set to invade primetime TV when he stars with Sarah Geronimo in a soap opera. Both Mark and Sarah are now talents of ABS-CBN. Last Sunday, the two pop teen stars were launched in "ASAP Mania" where they first shared the "ASAP" stage.
