Hello! It's my first time to post here...

I remember when I was 9 years old, someone taught me to play ati ku pung singsing (sp?) and surprisingly I still can up to now.

The Seven Versions of “Atin Cu Pung Singsing”

THE SONG “Atin Cu Pung Singsing is a traditional Kapampangan folksong. As such, its author is anonymous, that is, unknown. I have heard at least seven versions of this number.

That seventh at the latest is that of Mon David during the launching of his CD titled “Abe Mu Ku” at the JDN Center for Kapampangan Studies at the Holy Angel University in Angeles City on March 28, 2004. The CD is sub – titled “Koleksiyong Kantang Kapampangan” and its includes this Pampango folksong.

Mon as a product of the UP Conservatory of Music is a consummate jazz singer. His version of “Atin Cu Pung Singsing” has a very pronounced Brazilian effect. By himself he recorded it in a ten – track mixer using his own voice (his first instrument) a shaker and wood blocks. The number turned to be very jazzy and it somehow has diverted a lot from its traditional rendition. This simply shows that the music is alive and its constantly changing.

He at the end made some changes in the lyrics and finally asked “Nokarin ya ing singsing?” Tonette T. Orejas in her article “Rediscovering the Lost Ring” or the “K” Magazine Issue No. 8 theorized that the “Center for Kapampangan Studies” could be the lost ring of Pampanga. Isagani Ibarra, the folk artist from Mabalacat, Pampanga on the other hand, declared that the circular amphitheater inside the CSWZ in Mabalacat is actually the lost ring of Pampanga.

The sixth version is that of the Arti Sta. Rita. Their CD was produced and launched at the said Center. The group is a gathering of very young artists from Sta. Rita, Pampanga. It is headed by their composer and arranger Andi Alviz. He had done directorial work with Lea Salonga in the Manila show of the Broadway Miss Saigon in December 2001. Andy found new talents to develop among members of the Sta. Rita Choir.

Their rendition of “Atin Cu Pung Singsing” follows first the traditional way and later on becomes a boogie – woogie number. The talent of these singer is indeed impressive and I somehow prefer to call them “The Yeah Girls” because of their strong urge to sing “yeah” at the end of the number.

The first time I was able to obtain the melody and basic chords of this song was through a music book lent to me by my tutorial student Cheryl R. Pineda. It was a ¾ waltz ¾ number of Key of E and used the Tagalog ‘k” instead of the traditional Kapampangan “c” or “q”. thus, it was titled “Atin Ku Pung Singsing”.

The fifth version of the song was that included in the CD/ Tape “Pamalsinta Quetang Milabas” produced by the Sapni nang Crissot. The vocal in mezzo soprano were by Fides Cuyugan Ascensio and arrangement by Ed Nepomuceno. This song was sponsored by the descendants of Dr. Clemente M. Puno. I call it the classical version. Its lyrics in traditional Kapampangan were as follows;

Meuala ia iti, ecu camalaian.”

“Qng sucal ning lub cu
Susucdul qng banua

Babo ning lamesa
Nino mang manaquit
Qng singsing cung mana
Calulung pusu ku
Manginu ya quea.”

In English, the same song is translated as:

MY LOST RING

“I once had a dear ring
With a precious stone rare.
It was given to me
By my mother so dear;
In my chest it was kept,
It was lost, now I grieve;
Bitter tears have I shed,
That in heaven were heard.”

“Grieving, lonely I sit
As I think of my loss,
Tis so bitter and great
That a vow I have made;
Whosoe’er finds my ring
And restores it to me, my poor heart shall be his,
To serve him faithfully.”

The fourth and third version of “Atin Cu Pung Singsing” were by street singer Totoy Bato. It is the version favored by most politicians. I was able to buy the two pirate CDs of Totoy Bato during the February 2, 2004 town fiesta of Mabalacat. It was rendered in the traditional polosa style. The fourth version was in Tagalog translation by the same singer.

My friend Dan Punsalan said he could listen to the version only once although it is played almost everyday by his neighbors, the Mendozas of Poblacion. Bernard Mendoza is the present top Kagawad of Barangay Poblacion and Moc Candelaria in their family friend. Dan said he might yet compose some Pampango songs a la Bob Dylan. He was very much impressed by the recent Mon David performance and CD launching.

The second version could probably be called the folk version by Freddie Aguilar. It was used in a Tagalog film about the Huks of Pampanga. Freddie’s version was not bad. I wonder if he is Pampango?

The first version of “Atin Cu Pung Singsing” was done by Singer Bayang Barrios. She was accompanied by The Tropical Depression and Papa Dom I would call this pop version of the song. It has a strong Carribean raggae beat is obvious. Perhaps Bayang is non – Kapampangan because she was inclined to mispronounce some words. Is Papa Dom a Kapampangan? I really do not know. But the way he pronounced some Kapampangan lyrics, he obviously is not. Also Bayang seemed more interested in singing rather than in Dom’s proposal.

Pop, indeed!

Singsing is the title of the quarterly magazine published by the Juan D. Nepomuceno Center for Kapampangan Studies. It is headed by the Director Robby P. Tantingco and is based at the Holy Angel University in Angeles City. Its Vol. 2 No. 2 issue is all about Bacolor One Brief Shinning Moment I was delighted reading it cover to cover because it certainly was more interesting and better reading than a plain the txt book on Pampango History. This was perhaps due to the pictures or visual arts included. It has historical materials on great Pampangos such as former Governor Pablo Angeles David and former Supreme Court Justice Jose Gutierrez David. Lately it came out with a special issue on “Memorable Kapampangans.” Said issue was reviewed by Tonette Orejas on the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Attention all Kapampangan scholars: The Center for Kapampangan Studies has launched the maiden issued of Alaya a research journal for formal researchers and writers of Kapampangan culture. This journal will surely be read and appreciated by all those who attended the “1st International Conference on Kapampangan Studies” at the Holy Angel University last September 2001. I was invited by K Center Director Robby Tantingco to lecture on Local History, As expected I selected what I know best, that is, “Ing Sumpa: Mabalacat’s Paradigm Shift.”

Singsing contains the following articles “River tours launched” (The picture showing the Masantol mangroves is simply beautiful!); Bacolor and the Origin of Kapampangan Studies” by John A. Larkin (100 years ago, an American educator in Bacolor started it all); “Bakulud / Bacolor Jewel in the Crown”; Bacolor as the center of Philippine history 1762-1764” (Stirrings of Nationalism among Kapampangans when the capital was moved to their province); “Reminiscences of Royalty” (affluent families shaped the cultural and political landscape of Bacolor’s history). “The Hilarios of Bacolor and the road of freedom” and “Crissot” ( The volume, variety and quality of his literary output should put him on Shakespeare’s league) etc among others.

As a service to the K Center I am re-printing the message of Singsing editor Robby Tantingco ao all Singsing readers:

“As you may have noticed, Singsing has evolved from being a mere newsletter to a magazine with feature articles meant to introduce topics in Kapampangan studies, and make them as readable as possible, to Kapmapngans and non – Kapampangan alike, in the hope that our readers will get interested enough to venture into more serious research.

“After one year of circulation, Singsing’s readership has expanded beyond our original estimates - a very welcome development indeed which, however, strained our resources, and so we would like to request you, dear reader, to please help us defray our expenses by donating a minimum of one hundred and fifty pesos (P150.00) which will be equivalent to a one year subscription of Singsing.”

“Your support will enable us to continue studying everything Kapampangan and sharing our findings with you. Dakal Pung Salamat!”

for allthese efforts, kudos to K Center director Robby Tantingco and HAU president Bernadette M. Nepomuceno! Somehow I miss my classes at the HAU but then that is now a closed chapter of my life. All I have to do presently is to write the Kamikaza Story with Guy Hilbero and The History of Mabalacat in three volumes: I History, II Pictorial and III Trivia.

The question is do I have the time or opportunity to do so? as The Moody Blues love to say “Time waits for no one”. “Also,Omar Khayyam in his Rubaiyat wrote that “One thing at least is certain – This life flies.” My favorite however, is a quotation from the German Poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: “Ohne Hast, aber ohne Rast.” In English it translates as “Without haste but without pause.” In oriental philosophy, this is equivalent to the principle of moderation by the foremost Chinese philosopher Cofucius of Kong Fuzi (Master Kong).

Since I am writing about rings, I might as well add the following items: the J.R.R. Tolkien’s mythological romances, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion which are current favorite reading materials for lovers of fantasy. The need and use of fantasy is one topic I intend to explre in the future issue. I am specially keen on fiction, science or otherwise. As of now, I am still hooked on Star Trek of Star Wars stories. J.R.R. Tolkien is actually John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, the English writer and scholar who reestablished fantasy as a serious form in modern English literature. He started with “Beowulf” : The Monsters and the Critics” and then published his own fantasy The Hobbit and finally his masterpieces, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion.

The Lord of the Rings is available in trilogy form at the National Bookstore, SM – Pampanga for P1,000.00 plus. I heard that Teresa the daughter of my friend Jun Marcaida is saving her weekly allowances in order to purchase a set at the National Bookstore. I find that very inspiring in a kind and how I wish I could give her the books as a gift. When I asked Jun why he is also reading the hard cover editions of the Harry Potter series sent by her sister Josie who works to McGraw Hill in the Us of A, he replied that “how else could he join conversations with his children who read Harry Potter?”

BY THE WAY, there is obscure opera The Ring of Nibelung (Das Ring der Nibelungen) by Richard Wagner which includes the Rhinegold, The Valkyrie, Siegfried and The Twilight of the Gods. The last one is the famous German Gotterdamerung while less known are the second Die Walkure and the first Das Rheingold. Siegfried is as it is. I wonder why the “e” was deleted in the real first name of Isagani Ibarra. Wagner was a former friend of Friedrich Nietzsche. Nietzsche’s works are available in English translations by Walter Kaufmann.
